>> for bernie, coming the home my wife and two beautiful princesses keeps memo ti vatd. >> peter tweeting, time with my family. >> and dana perino tweeted my dog keeps me going. thanks for writing everybody. thanks for being a part of the real story. i'll see you back here tomorrow. well cops in los angeles say they have a serial killer on their hands. four people are now dead. investigators say there may be more victims. now the suspect behind bars. plus the white house reportedly pressing some of our closest allies for help battling islamic state militants. the question will any of those allies want to get involved in another possible war. and do the pills in your medicine cabinet really expire or do the companies that make them just put dates on the bottle to get you to throw them away and buy more pills?
12:01 pm
we have answers so let's get to it. good afternoon from the deck, 3:00 on the east coast and rapid fire developments now out of syria. one american is dead. one hostage is now home. two other kidnapped americans whose lives could be in danger. first up, we're learning more about the american who apparently died fighting side-by-side with the islamic state terrorists, one of dozens of americans officials say joined the brutal militants. the alleged jihadist name, douglas macarthur mccain. he's a native of minnesota who one friend called him a good person at heart but u.s. officials tell a very different story. they say he traveled to syria to join up with violent militants most likely with a group called the islamic state the same terrorists carved off the head of an american journalist and threatened to do it again.
12:02 pm
now they are demanding millions of dollars for another american. a 26-year-old aide worker. the group is demanding more than $6.5 million to let her go free. this would be the third american that we know of, anyway, who the islamic state kidnapped. it's already executed the journalist jim foley in a gruesome online video. the killer threatened to murder another american the journalist steven sotloff. his mother, you may have seen recorded a new video for her son's captors begging them to let him live. we'll show it to you unedited. >> i'm sending you this message to you, abu bakr al-baghdadi the head of the islamic state. my son steven is in your hands. steven is a journalist who traveled to the middle east to cover the suffering of muslims at the hand of tyrants.
12:03 pm
steven is a loyal and generous son, brother and grandson. he's an honorable man who has always tried to help the weak. we've not seen steven for over a year and we miss him very much. we want to see him home safe and sound and to hug him. since steven's capture i've learned a lot about islam. i've learned that islam teaches that no individual should be held responsible for the sins of others. steven has no control over the actions of the u.s. government. he's an innocent journalist. i've always learned that you can grant aprmnesty. i can you to please release my child. as a month i ask your justice to be merciful and not punish my son for matters he has no control over. i ask you to use your authority to spare his life and to follow
12:04 pm
the example set by the prophet mohamed who protected people of the book. i want what every mother wants to live to see her children's children. i plead with you to grant me this. >> his mother and that plea airing on television. we thank them for letting us use it. another american journalist arrived home after two years in captivity. not the islamic state holding him but a similar fighting group in syria. he said that he would share his whole story but only after he's had time to catch up with his family. >> i had no idea that so much effort was being extended on my behalf. having found out i'm overwhelmed with i'm also overwhelmed by one other thing and that is total strangers have been coming up to me saying hey we're glad your home, glad you're back. >> the developments out of syria come as the united states conducts spy drone missions over

that country. analysts say that could be a first step towards launching air strikes in syria something defense officials say the president could consider. it's fox hot story and conor powell is live in jerusalem. >> reporter: president obama and washington debate american air strikes in syria we're learning more about the fighters that make up isis' army. there's 10,00020,000 foreign fighters in iraq and syria fighting for several different militant groups including isis. most come from countries like saudi arabia, jordan, libya but u.s. intelligence officials say they are tracking 300 american citizens now fighting in iraq and syria and the fear is that number will only rise at least one american douglas macarthur mccain has been killed over there. u.s. officials saying the 33-year-old minnesota native was fighting with isis and was killed this past weekend. intel officials say these american citizens represent a
12:06 pm
real threat to the u.s. the fear is militants like mccain will return to the u.s. on their american passport, getting by security and launching an attack here. this is a problem not only the u.s. is facing but britain, france and all of shepard. it's a real serious problem and one that american officials and european officials are tracking but they admit privately that this is not something they can control. these people who are going over there to fight are on foreign passports. they can get back in their home countries. what happens next that's the real concern. >> conor powell for us from jerusalem. let's bring in mike barrett. mike, there's an american dead on the battlefield, if you will, fighting for isis against his home country. we don't know exactly how many more there are but sources tell us it's not a very small number. >> that's right. one of the stark realities is we just don't know. you would like to think we would have a good handle on this but there's legitimate reasons to
12:07 pm
travel to the countries that neighbor syria and iraq. i myself go to turkey on a fairly regular basis. i used to live there. but it's also just a fact turkey is a gateway for militants trying to get into syria and to fight alongside isis and its brethren. >> they are from all over europe too. i wonder what the level of concern was if you might know that maybe an american, frenchman, british citizen all return the home paris, london, new york and shoot up times square or trafalgar square. it all happens at once and the global economy shuts down. i just wonder how great those concerns are. >> yeah they are significant. you make a great point here. the risk you're talking about here is individual actors for the most part. on 9/11 we saw 19 people in a coordinated attack against four airplanes. that's a large and sophisticated attack. boston bombing two people with rice cooker, two brothers that
12:08 pm
were able to create a bomb. ones and, two groups of three or four. what makes it dangerous is doing it simultaneously whether it's multiple sites in the u.s. or around the world these days it's very easy to coordinate and time something so it can have truly global dramatic impact. >> the terrorists realize if they were to strike say in london, new york or paris the pressure on them there where they are trying to create this caliphate is much greater. doesn't it make more sense that they would stay there and get the business accomplished and worry about the rest of the world later. >> you got to remember about two things. one these guys believe that god is on their side. they look at it differently. if god is on their side they will come out ahead. it's the best recruiting card they can have. one of the things i've been worried about is the u.s. homeland becomes the target as sunnis and shi'ites try to one up each other.

>> mike barrett, hope is not a strategy. mike, nice to see you. military fighter jets crashed in virginia and hours later rescue workers still looking for the pilot. this happened about 9:00 this morning. eastern time. in deerfield, which is about 130 miles or so north and west of richmond, virginia. witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion at the time. you can see the area that the jet burned and cleared out along with some flames there. but it's difficult to make out any sort of wreckage. officials say this was a training flight from an air national guard base from springfield, mass to new orleans. the pilot reported some sort of on board emergency and then lost communication with the jet. they could not say what the emergency was just that they are still looking for that pilot. >> a man cops called a serial kill certificate now locked up. among his victims a family heading to church just a few days ago. police say they are investigating whether more

we reported on this yesterday. the father is a guy named david barajas. he cried when he heard the verdict today. here's the back story. started in 2012. the father along with his 11-year-old and 12-year-old sons the father was pushing the family truck on the side of the road. it ran out of gas. they are on the side of the road. a drunken driver plowed into the group and killed both children. prosecutors claim the father then shot and killed the driver just minutes after the crash. he denies that and has from the beginning. investigators never found the murder weapon and there was very little physical evidence that tied the father to the murder. had the jury convicted him company have faced life in prison. again moments ago a jury acquit the texas father accused of killing the drunken driver who killed his two sons. a mandateors are calling a serial killer is under arrest. it's alleged he shot seven

people leaving four dead and three others critical. now we're learning there could be even more victims. we'll have more on that one just a moment. i'll show you where this happened. the shootings began a week ago when a man in an suv pulled up next to a woman as he exit ad freeway north of los angeles at water village. there police say he shot and wounded her. the next morning about 20 minutes north of there, police say the gunman shot and killed a man in his truck at an intersection in pacoima, california. when the cops found the body engine was still running. that's thursday. move ahead to friday. he goss from pacoima down to west hollywood. two people in west hollywood said a man pulled up to their suv and shot them three times. actually shot at them. and he missed. then let's move forward to saturday. on saturday he left west hollywood and went back to pacoima and the gunman shot at
12:15 pm
three dogs killed two of them. the animal's owner said he recognized the shooter after his suv broke down in front of their house a week before. now sunday morning he went over to san fernando where cops said some guy shot and killed a 23-year-old woman and injured her parents while on their way to church. that same morning, in sylmar a man shot and killed a man walking to a rec center north there was. ten minutes later back in pacoima cops say a gunman gunned down another woman who was waiting for her friend before church. when they arrested the suspect on sunday they found a pistol grip shotgun that they believe he used in those attacks. the guy is now in jail on $1 million bail. let's get to trace gallagher in our west coast news hub. what do we know about this guy,
12:16 pm
trace? >> reporter: he's 34-year-old alexander hernandez and he has convictions on both drugs and weapon charges. no violent offenses but an ex-girlfriend got a restraining order against him because she told police she feared for her life as well as the lives of her two young daughters. he once grab ad screwdriver and started stabbing himself repeatedly. at one time he jumped in front of her moving car and threatened to blow up her car. police say with that and this you can see they are dealing with an unstable person. >> that seems clear. police are also saying that they think there may be more victims. why is that? >> reporter: well because now they are going back and looking at unsolved shootings that involve a shotgun and also saying because he so many shooting victims in such a short amount of time that there could be some people they missed and a lot of information that still could be coming in. one of the biggest mistakes the
12:17 pm
suspect made, apparently, was shooting the three dogs that you talked about because animal cruelty detectives were able to go out there and then matched his car to the scene, were able to come up with a name in just a few hours. they were in the process of getting a warrant for this guy when he shot and killed three other people and police still have no motive at all. listen. >> we looked at that on sunday, we thought maybe there was a nexus between the victims. but there isn't. this is an individual that was out randomly shooting people. that's what we believe happened here. as crazy as that sounds that's what happened. so in terms of motive, i don't know what his motive may have been. >> reporter: because he was lying in wait for his victims that's premeditation so this could very well be a death penalty case, shep, the d.a. is supposed to decide that later today. here on the east coast police say a 20-year-old man is now in stable condition in the
12:18 pm
hospital after they discovered him wandering along a dark road bound, wet, and covered in stab wounds in his neck, leg and chest. cops say when they found him they discovered the bodies of two other people in the schuykill river skabd and bound with duct tape. somebody had use ad cement bucket to weigh down the bodies. police say the man who survived told investigators four or five people abducted them, threw him in a van and robbed him before they threw him in the water. but somehow he managed to get free. police are not saying where the abduction took place but said they will use surveillance video from that area to identify the van. a hit man who admitted killing hundreds of people, hundreds of them and plotting the deaths of thousands more including his own girlfriend is now free. we'll explain to you why and what the guy they call popeye says he manassas to plans to do.

22 minutes past the hour. the chief hit man for one of the most famous drug lords ever is now roaming free. some pictures up here. his name is john vasquez. or velasquez. he's known by his nickname as popeye. he's now 52 years old. but even before he was 18 he joined up with this man, the late pablo escobar and his cocaine cartel. escobar once supplied 80% of all the cocaine snorted in the united states.
12:23 pm
velasquez is accused of killing 300 people. he's admitted in having a hand of 3,000 killings in the 1980s and 1990s. authorities believe him including his own girlfriend one of companies bar's former lovers. yesterday officials in colombia let popeye out of prison for good behavior. listen to some of his rap sheet. he detonated more than 250 car bombs. he organized dozens of kidnappings including one that nabbed this guy who went on to become the president of colombia. popeye himself is linked to the 1989 bombing of a passenger jet which killed more than 100 people. and investigators also say he helped plot the assassination of this man, a presidential candidate and that got him 30 years in prison. but now he served his time and he's free partly because officials say he helped investigators put other people
12:24 pm
behind bars. according to our researcher's velasquez testimony has not toledo any prosecutions here in the united states as far as we know. now that he's out velasquez says there's an 80% chance one of his former rivals will kill him. he's considering moving to another country and wants to sell the rights to his au autobiography. drew, everybody is upset he's out. everybody is worried he's out. he did the time. now he's on probation for four years and he's out. that's how this works. >> that's exactly how it works. this isn't even unusual by united states standards. if we look at the way that we federally prosecute drug crimes in this country, particularly going back to the late '80s and early '90s when cocaine was the thing we were giving deals to people that can furnish information -- remember it's not just assisting in the prosecution but how much information did you give your
12:25 pm
government that led to arrests and further investigations and so what do you give up? you give up the number of years you're going to require somebody to stay in jail and i have to tell you a 30 year sentence is the norm in this country and here's the reason why. because in a case of this magnitude there's a thing called an enhancement which means you can get a life sentence and your attorneys like me say, hey, we'll cut a deal, take the life sentence off the table, we'll take the 30 and in the united states with good time that means 25 years or so. you take off the time after that forgoing to drug treatment, he obviously may have had drug, pronow you're at 24. halfway house down 23 years. this is really what could have taken place in the united states with cooperation like this. >> he's admitted he killed 300 people, involved with the killing of thousands of people, now he's out free, and he wants
12:26 pm
to sell the rights to his autobiography so they can make a movie out of it. can you do that? >> i don't think you'll see any son of sam laws apply because he's in south america. he's there. does he want to sell his rights to the united states through a publishing company here? that's a likelihood. does he want to do it in europe, that's a likelihood. don't forget these colombia drug lords are coming out every day, shep. this is a modern phenomenon and moving to europe. this is not unheard of. this is what's happening to these former businessmen so to speak. >> are they getting back in the business? >> well, you know, here's the interesting response to that and that is that business has left them. it's not -- it's a different world right now. there are different drugs of choice and different era. this guy wouldn't even know how to use a cell phone or iphone. so it's left. it's dominated by a new breed of
12:27 pm
people. it's a new culture. it's like -- it sounds crazy but like being in the beverage industry 25 years ago, 30, 35 years ago and getting out now. there's a whole new way of doing things, technology has changed, everything has changed. this guy is going to be unemployed and he's going to have to look over his shoulder on a daily basis. >> the law will be watching him and his rivals will be watching him and i bet this problem will take care of itself. >> absolutely. a newly released report details the brutality of islamic state militants in syria and accuses them of committing war crimes. this comes as we learn more about how the united states is trying to shore up support for air strikes in syria. we're approaching the bottom of the hour and the top of the news and the possibility of air strikes in syria is next.

>> a fox report. third doctor on the front lines of sirsierra leone fight agains ebola has died. the outbreak of ebola has killed 1400 people. the white house reports the president will award a medal of honor to an officer who fought in the civil war. officials say the lieutenant, alonso cushing died while protecting the union position during the battle of gettysburg back in 1863. congress agreed to waive the rule that prohibits awarding the medal of honor more than three years after the actual event. suzuki announced it's recall 13,000 mid-size cars because a spider web can cause a fire. more news next.

state. that's what they want us to call them. the islamic state has carried out widespread and systematic atrocities in groups that it controls in syria. now hear this. it shows that the militants have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity including whippings, amputations and public executions. all part of a campaign to spread fear among the people of syria. according to the report the executions have become common in the militant strongholds of ale aleppo. we've seen jaimings showing militants slaughtering people including beheadings and mass killings and crucifixions. it details war crimes, crimes against humanity and claims syria's government has committed. well among the accusations the president there bashir al assad
12:34 pm
his regime attacked his own people with chlorine gas eight times back in april and it's three years that president obama said he needs to go and quite a long time since he crossed the red line yet there he is. our chief intelligence correspondent kathryn harris is live in washington. we're learning more about the islamic state's military capabilities. >> reporter: that's right. the terrorist group isis or isil has taken a strategy jig approach to gain recruits and equipment according to a new analys analysis. an independent and privately funded research group reads in part isil did not become effective suddenly in early june 2014 it had been steadily strengthening and actively shaping the future operating environment for four years. >> there's been a deliberate and very thoughtful approach to how they built themselves up.
12:35 pm
they have armored units. they have vehicles. they have tactics. they have command and control structures. they are very well organized. it's not a bunch of terrorists running around. it's organized militant army. >> reporter: the analysis says abu bakr al-baghdadi, the group's leader rebooted the organization in may 2010 and began a multiyear campaign taking specific aim at the american trained iraqi security forces and he did that by using car bombs like one recently in baghdad and then also assassination at checkpoints. it was well thought out. hit several layers beginning with the security personnel in iraq. >> again this is a u.n. report. what does it say about this group's weaknesses, if any? >> reporter: well, this group like almost any other groups in yemen and somalia has a fairly strong leadership structure but the targeting of key leaders according to this analysis could
12:36 pm
have a devastating effect, quote although they may boast a deep bench of talented individuals following years of prisoner releases, prison breaks and recruitment, leadership casualties will limit their ability to hold their future. >> thanks. the obama administration now pressing u.s. allies to support the potential campaign of air strikes targeting islamic state militants in syria according to a report by the "new york times." in today's edition it reports white house officials believe the united kingdom and australia would be willing to join with the united states. again according to the "times" they hope turkey will give us access to their key military bases. turkey lies along syria's northern border and "times" report u.s. asked turkey officials to help stop militants
12:37 pm
from crossing into syria. nicholas burns is now a professor of politics and diplomacy at harvard. what do we do about this? what do we do about that turkey border? what can to be done? >> well this is a real test of american diplomacy and what the administration has to do, shep, is be the organizer, an integrator of a region wide ability to confront isis. secondly, try to get the arab countries on one page. qatar, saudi arabia, united arab emrates. it's not just the air strikes but money and fighters as they go into the region. >> what's your take on the
12:38 pm
wisdom of these air strikes getting into the middle of this in syria? >> i think that the united states had to engaging air strikes in iraq, shep, over the last couple of weeks to save kurdistan and protect iraqi kurdistan. that's been largely effective. the argument for air strikes in syria is that's where the heart of isis is. it's where they built their organization, it's where most of their funds and fighters and infrastructure are. and if you don't go to the source by air strikes in syria, you're not going to be effective over time in containing them in iraq and ultimately the big question is can you contain isis in iraq and syria, probably but can you defeat them? probably not without the introduction of american ground troops and the president has said he's unwilling to do that and i think congress would agree with that. >> back to syria. if, in fact, these air strikes happen, is that not, first, sort of de facto teaming with bashir
12:39 pm
al assad and secondly how do we know when this campaign ends. what's the goal and how do we know if it's accomplished. >> to your last question it's a vital one. the president said at the beginning of this a few weeks ago this will take some time to be able to contain isis. this is a strong group as your reporter said. this is a militant army. it's well trained. it's well financed and well equipped. the united states and our allies might be striking isis through the air for many months to come if not longer. the problem with assad is he can't have it both ways. the syrian government announced yesterday the united states should not strike isis targets in syria because that would be an infringement on syrian sovereignty and the state department said the right thing. the state department spokeswoman said we're not going to ask permission and we shouldn't ask permission. the administration said we won't team up with assad against isis
12:40 pm
because frankly assad is an adversary as is isis. this is a complex environment but really the administration, i think, is doing the right thing here by showing some american force and i think lifting up american credibility in the process. >> nicholas burns with us. very interesting. thank you so much. >> thank you. well, in ukraine, oh, my god, in ukraine, pro russian rebel forces have entered a key town in the southeastern part of the country. that's word from that town's mayor. and there's the name of the town upper left on your screen. earlier today eyewitnesses said they saw more than 20 shells fired within an hour, plumes of black smoke. shelling has been coming from pro russian separatists and listen now from russia itself. so if you want to put this in laymen's terms, putin is bombing
12:41 pm
ukraine. that's a fact. comes after heavy fighting yesterday in that same town. they wounded four people and damaged the hospital. the town is south of donetsk. it's along a links russia and crimea and you can be a third grader and figure out from this that that's what putin wants, a road from russia to crimea. the other thing he just stole. meantime in russia, courts ordered the closure of three mcdonald's restaurants over claims of sanitary concern. russian businessmen say the crackdown is linked to the crisis in ukraine and recent u.s. punish merps. mcdonald will appeal the ruling. there's nothing yet from mayor mccheese. a football player says he hurt himself trying to save his nephew but now his coach says some people are questioning that story and now we're learning about a police report from the same night.

it's a complicated story that bears the need some attention and we'll have the details coming up. did someone say burn? try alka seltzer reliefchews. they work just as fast and are proven to taste better than tums smoothies assorted fruit. mmm. amazing. yeah, i get that a lot. alka seltzer heartburn reliefchews. enjoy the relief.

12:47 pm
report from that same night. see there? cops say he's not a suspect. will carr with more. what more do we know about this burglary report, will? >> reporter: what we know right now is police tell us that they responded saturday night to an apartment complex in regards to a call of a woman screaming when they got there witnesses described a man leaping from the balcony of an apartment in that complex and police say they noticed the back window had been pried open. the owner of the apartment identified joshua shaw as her boyfriend and said he matched witness descriptions. he's not been named a suspect or been charged but if he's involved it's a stark contrast to his version of the story. >> pretty clear there's quite a bit -- quite a few conflicting stories out there. you know any information we've been provided up to this point, we pushed along.
12:48 pm
>> reporter: the head coach says usc is in a holding pattern while shaw's friends have been quick to show their support. >> i would be shocked if it were the case that josh had made thunder. he's a v-very good boy. i personally do not think he would lie. i know his little nephew. he doesn't know how to swim. >> reporter: the apartment complex where this all evidently may or may not have gone down is "60 minutes" from palmdale where shaw say he rescued his nephew. >> do we know when he might play. >> reporter: it's unlikely any time soon. it takes a long time to come back from an ankle sprain. that's bad news for a team that has a new coach and a lot of excitement around this program. it could have a big impact on the rest of their season. >> will carr live in los angeles. thanks. hurricane marie creating dozens of deadly surf conditions
