9:30 am
hello, time now for sunday house call. >> joining us this sunday as he does every sunday, dr. mark s h seagal. >> and the chairman and professor and chief of robotics surgery. >> gentlemen, great to see you. just a few more days before classes start trough the country. parents are making -- everything for your kids to do well in the classroom. it's also a good time to make
9:31 am
sure they stay as healthy as possible once they're in school. dr. siegel, what shall we do as parents? >> they're coming home sick within the first week. >> that's exactly right. get your kids immunized, number one on the list. make sure they have that mmr vaccine before they go to school. other vaccines like flu i'm in favor of as well. make sure all the vaccinations are up to date, the hepatitis vaccine. go with them to school, make sure the school knows how to get you. sorry, they're in school, but you can't get away from that that easily. make sure the school nurse can reach you. i want kids to have their eyes checked. you know how many kids are out there squinting at the chalk board? i believe in regular examinations with a pediatrician because we want to know what kids are suffering from, what are their restrictions, what
9:32 am
can't they do? are there medications they're on? the school needs to know about that. >> talk about the mmrs, some people are against that issue now. >> i think the whole myth about the mmr and also all the shots we have had in the past, that's already put to rest. i don't think this topic is about kids going to school. you got to make sure you got all those vaccinations done. get the hearing test done. make sure the visual test is all done. this is all the doctor's business. now we get to the stuff that when i grew up, i hated going to school. summer was fun and you have a day of anxiety. so it's always good to team up with a friend of yours to make the first week a little easy. also get rid of those heavy -- >> backpacks. >> the kids backs are getting ruined with these big heavy backpacks. >> should they be weighed before they go out the door? >> it should ideally be less
9:33 am
than 20% of your whole body weight. so you can get one of these roller ones that would help. also parents should have a great rapport with the nurses at school. make sure that the kids, all the information as far as allergies to food. any allergies to latex, if you have any serious problems, asthma, or any restriction to physical activity, to the nurse should have a good contact with parents and be aware of this. >> review the school lunch with your child, find out what they're eating and one more thing is watch out for bullies. and the american academy of pediatrics says the best way to handle a bully is not pick a fight, but just say what are you doing this for? stand your ground. not back down. >> the problem with bullying is that the kids are not going to always open up and talk about this. so you want to look for any kind of behavioral changes. is the kid not interacting with
9:34 am
others, is he not sleeping well, is he getting up in the middle of the night? pay attention to those too. but most kids are so scared that they may not come home. and tell you. >> it's a big problem across the country, bullying in schools. >> you may not think about that health checklist, but you bring up a great point on that. >> david's point is that they may not be telling you. >> an important checklist indeed. and now we want to turn to a ground breaking new idea that could help significantly cut down the number of complications in surgery and for patients, this is all thanks to a new tracking device, which is something like a black box like the ones that are placed in airplanes and that records surgeons movements and is also meant to help identify errors in surgery. >> this is supposed to be very similar to what goes on in the
9:35 am
black box of a plane. canadians are -- they're taping the entire process. interaction of the surgeon with the staff, what goes on in the operating room. how you handle the organ, how you do your stitches and the reason for this, is to reduce the number of complications, to make the surgeries flawless. but also more important use these videos to educate our next generation of surgeons. you ask where did you learn robotic surgery? i think when we grew up as doctors, there was a concept of see one, do one, teach one, you look at an operation and then you do one and then you become a professor and teach it. that time has come and gone. i think this is a good program. the idea of having a black box is to go back and find out what mistakes, and exactly how
9:36 am
professional athletes do this. they go back and they tape the game, they say how did we lose the super bowl, how can we do better. one of the things i have done in my operating room, is that we already did this ten years ago. i used to tape all my surgeries and watch. that's how we came up with this smart technique for prostate cancer, and that has been efficient. you don't want to practice, you want to come in and do the operation, and that's how, by the way, mark is going to talk about this, the pilots are not going to learn how to fly the plane right where they have the passengers. you have the simulators, you take the mri of the kidney, or the mri of the prostate, you practice outside the operating room. >> we're calling this let's go to the videotape. is it a foul ball or is it a fair ball and the studies coming from canada are showing -- they
9:37 am
used a lap are scope for this, they attach the camera to the l laproscope, you could use this for peer review, you can teach other doctors, the health care improvement act prevents that kind of information being used legally. so answer your question, if it's for peer review, it can't be used legally. if i ask america's patients out there, they want to know if something goes wrong, so this is a very debatable issue. i agree that the number one purpose of this is teaching, to learn from mistakes, and by the way, somebody who comes out post-op, you may not know why something goes wrong, if you can go back, there's something called araknoiditis, so there's
9:38 am
a great advantage in terms of learning. >> whatever we have, the m&m, we call it morbidity and mortality. all the doctors in the department get together and look at exactly why an accident happened. so all the professors are discussing that. and if you have the video of that surgery, you can say, look, this is exactly what happens. and for learning purposes, improving our surgical skill. and robotic surgery is basically the same kind of pathway. this has been tremendous help to straining -- >> we're talking about kidney stones. what exactly are kidney stones and why are they painful? welcome ugh. heartburn.
9:39 am
9:40 am
9:41 am
did someone say burn? try alka seltzer reliefchews. they work just as fast and are proven to taste better than tums smoothies assorted fruit. mmm. amazing. yeah, i get that a lot. alka seltzer heartburn reliefchews. enjoy the relief.
9:42 am
. and back now to sunday house call. you know what can be caused by dehydration, certain medical . . . . . . calcium or
9:43 am
eric, you said that in the setup. people are not drinking enough, and one of our top experts at nyu is saying, you also have lemon and line, if you use a lot of lemon and lime and a lot of hydration, you can cut down on kidney stones dramatically. you want to avoid beef, spinach rhubarb and nuts. you want to avoid the calcium, you want to drink a lot of water and it's genetic, so watch out if somebody in your family has them. >> what do you get, stabbing pains? it's going to happen to me, i know. >> they say it's as painful as childbirth. >> the reason why it's so painful. if you look at, for example, the kidneys right here, you would have a crystal right in the kidneys. >> kind of like your side? >> exactly.
9:44 am
so it's in the back, you have it on the right side and the left side the bay you have your kidney. if you have a stone over here, as long as it sits in the kidneys, it doesn't obstruct the kidneys, when you start drinking beer, and you have a lot going through there, it can pop the stone and come right through this tube, this is a ureter which is a narrow tube and it starts to block the kidney, that's when you're going to get the colicky pain that's worst than childbirth. it passes all the way through the bladder. a 5 millimeter stone has 50% chance of passing on its own. the bigger the stone gets, the lower the chance. along with hydration, muscle relaxa relaxants, that stone will pass. calcium ox tate is the most common type and you have to stay away from some of the food he just mentioned, lime juice or
9:45 am
lemon has sit trait, and sit rate inhibits these crystals. >> that's the way to go. and make sure you drink at least eight glasses of water. when you hydrate, you prevent these crystals from getting together and causing kidney stones. >> doctors in the emergency room have to be thinking about this, if there's blood in the urine, severe sharp reignal colic, it's called. as david mentioned, hydration, or shockwave therapy or surgical removal. >> the best test for this is actually noncontrast cat scan, that you can get in the emergency room and they can see the crystals and you can get it treated. >> and also, if you have a diabetic, you know you are supposed to stay away from sweets, but what about natural sugars like the ones from fruit. is that off-limits too, you don't want to miswhs what our m doctors have to say about that,
9:46 am
next.e ntix, tried to quit... probably about five times. it was different than the other times i tried to quit. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. it's a non-nicotine pill. chantix reduced my urge to smoke. that helped me quit smoking. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. if you notice any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these, stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some can be life-threatening. tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems, or if you develop new or worse symptoms. get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. use caution when driving or operating machinery. common side effects include nausea, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. my quit date was my son's birthday. and that was my gift for him and me. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.
9:47 am
9:48 am
9:49 am
welcome back to sunday house call, now for should i worry? >> i am die bet -- >> what kind of fruits and how much are you going to be take 1234g because in fruits, you have carbohydratings and a lot of fructose, causes inflammation, causes chronic diabetes and chronic inflammation and chronic disease. 190,000 people followed them for about 20 years and they actually took two portions, to three
9:50 am
servings of certain fruits, apples, grapes, raspberries, avocados. so grapes, pears, all of those, actually had a less risk of diabetes. so pick the right fruits and they can actually reduce the diabetes. but if you take a lot of other fruits and too much of it, you'll hurt yourself. >> you also have to be worried about fruit juices, too, or at least be monitoring. >> that's a good point, because if you drink a lot of juice, you're going to get all your insulin and sugar out of sync. that's not good for you. >> you want to stay away from pineapples if you're a diabetic and you want to stay away from melons if you're a diabetic, because they have a lot of sugar. but apples, pears, berries, cherries, have maybe 80 calories
9:51 am
less than a cup of blueberries. but they're also loaded with fiber. what does fiber do for you in fiber is a low glycemic index mee meaning the sugar gets manufactured farther down the line. with that going on, you get a much gentler effect in terms of sugar in the body and it's much better for didiabetics. the american diabetic association say diabetics can have two to three serves of fruit per day and be fine. that depends on the person, but no juice. juice is just a rush of sugar. >> you want to avoid all these spikes. you don't want to go through high sugar and low sugar and starve yourself. that's when you get these cravings and you'll start gaining a localit of weight. eating food that have a lot of
9:52 am
fiber, they have nutrients, they have antioxidans and they can break down the fructose. >> i guess that's good advice for those who don't have diabetes. >> absolutely. fruit is good for your diet. fruit also has a lot of water in it. you lose weight on fruit, you lose weight on vegetables. so bdiabetics, don't worry if yu have fruit, worry if you have fruit juice. >> all right, and if you have a question for us, e-mail us on housecall.fnc.com. coming up, we'll tell you why some researchers are now saying when it comes to your metabolism, breakfast may not be what it's cracked up to be. but i don't believe it. we'll find out from the doctors in a minute.
9:53 am
when folks think about what they get from alaska, they think salmon and energy. but the energy bp produces up here creates something else as well: jobs all over america. engineering and innovation jobs. advanced safety systems & technology. shipping and manufacturing. across the united states, bp supports more than a quarter million jobs. when we set up operation in one part of the country, people in other parts go to work. that's not a coincidence. it's one more part of our commitment to america.
9:54 am
9:55 am
9:56 am
back to our sunday house call. when it comes to keeping your weight in check, most diet plans tell you to eat a hearty, healthy breakfast. but doctors are saying it's not necessarily healthy and to skip it. i don't believe it, you need to eat breakfast. my mother told me that my whole life. >> and eric and i both ate greek
9:57 am
yogurt for breakfast and i'm advocating that. this study, and we love to look at how well studies are done here, 33 people looked at over 36 weeks and the study author said, quote, i almost never eat breakfast. well, if the study author almost never eats breakfast, he's clearly not an unbiased scientist in this. a much larger study looking at 27,000 men over 16 years last year showed a 27% increase of heart disease in people who do skip breakfast. and i do think what do you is you start your day with exercise, as i've said on the show many times, waurter, have some kind of breakfast -- i don't want it loaded with fats and carbohydrates, but some kind of breakfast with protein, fruit, yogurt, something like that, ask nd go on with your da. >> but it's about how all of our metabolisms are different, right? >> absolutely right.
9:58 am
i think the point you just made is that not everybody is the same, and if it works for you, go on and delay your breakfast to 10:00 or 11:00 and you're still healthy and you still can function. it's fine. eric's point is important also because when you sleep overnight, your brain slows down. it understands it has to slow down the spending and save the energy. when you wake up in the morning, now you want to start the metabolism, and the best thing is break the fast. that's what breakfast is. you stop fasting, you get the nutrition in, the brain starts functioning and this way you don't starve. when you skip breakfast, your sugar level goes down and you start to crave. by the time you get to lunchtime, you'll be eating a lot of fatty food, you want that salt, your insulin is out of sync and that's the problem of gaining a lot of weight. the other point is it's what you put in your system, which is laura's point. should you be eating sugary
9:59 am
cereal in the morning? absolutely not. you can have yogurt, blueberries, a healthy fix. >> you just mentioned the magic word. oatmeal and blueberries. >> i want to present a dilemma to dr. somadi after the show. david has convinced me that coffee is healthy, but there's some people you.n don't want to give coffee to. but if i want coffee to start my day because the doctor recommends it, i want to have it with food to soak it up. i don't want it on an empty stomach. so i say have some fiber, something with protein, some fruit, yogurt and have your cup of coffee. >> it kickstarts your whole day. >> to quote the medical doctor who was so afraid to drink coffee, who is admitting after a year and a half that coffee is actually good for you, a study
10:00 am
has said that drinking coffee three or four times a day can reduce the risk of diabetes, so i always start with a fresh cup of coffee. >> thank you as always. have a good breakfast, whatever it is. that's it for us. >> thanks for watching. breaking news on two big stories in the middle east today, iraq and libya. we'll get to the latest on the battle between isis and iraq in a minute. but first, the isis group has, in its words, secured a compound in libya. we'll get right to connor powell who is following this breaking news story from our mideast newsroom. connor? >> reporter: we understand this is not the u.s. embassy in tripoli but a building or annex connected to the u.s. embassy. still, when u.s. personnel fled tripoli about a month or so ago in july, it was supposed to be protected like the embassy and
