go after the islamic state fiegers. -- fighters. there's a lot of news so let's get to it. today's program is important. i need you for the next 15 minutes. nearly three months after president obama ordered air strikes against the islamic state militants, after he said he would guard against mission creep, no boots on the ground, the nation's top military officer today said we may eventually need boots on the ground. that is the secretary of defense said in the same hearing there is no military solution. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff made the comments during the first hearing in congress on taking on the islamic state. general martin dempsey told lawmakers if the president's strategy does not go as planned, the pentagon may ask permission from the president to put american zots on the ground. that is despite president obama's repeated promises there will be no boots on the ground

of americans. general dempsey gave lawmakers an example in which he said u.s. soldier would be needed. >> if the iraqi security force were ready to retake mosul, it could be part of that particular mission to provide close combat advising or accompanying for that mission. >> close combat advising. in other words, u.s. troops working side-by-side with iraqi soldiers in a ground fight. then there are the so-called moderate rebels in syria. they aren't just fighting the islamic state. they're also trying to fight bash shall al-assad and topple him. lawmakers add if that complications could draw our troops into a whole new fight. >> we're now recruiting young men to go and fight in syria against isil, about if they're attacked by bash shall assad, we're not going to help them. >> they will defend themselves,

but with mid-term elections weeks away there's a political angle to all of this, as you might imagine and also a tight deadline. lawmakers are heading home this friday and may not return until november. it's astounding, isn't it, when you it together. mike emanuel has the news on capitol hill. what is the latest at the house on syria? >> they're looking at an amendment that would give that narrow authorization, essentially allowing president obama to go forward with arming and training those syrian rebels. house members are debating it to you and we have heard some concerns about exactly who these syrian rebels are, although most today seem to be inclined to give the commander in chief what he wants in terms of the arming and training aspect. earlier house speaker john boehner suggested the president's plan should consider doing much more. >> i just think that if our goal here is to destroy isil, we have to do more than train a few

folks in syria and train a few folks in iraq. and dropping bombs. i just don't know it's enough to achieveñg the objective the president outlined. >> at this point, the president is only asking congress to authorize the money for training and arming those syrian rebels. some lawmakers said it's the best in a list of bad options. >> the best in a list of bad options. where the military is not a solution. are the house and senate on the same page? >> believe it or not they seem to be. senate majority leader harry reid suppressed confidence they would give the president what the needs. >> colleagues in the house are working on a bill to fund the government to give president obama the tools he needs to take decisive action against isis. when that bill passes and comes over here, i'm confident we'll pass on a bipartisan vote.

of disbanded. is that fair? >> it has disbanded. i you -- >> not even kind of. it's disbanded. >> they ran from the north, and even if we were to get tome together north, as if we could trust them. >> we just heard from general griffin -- jennifer griffin it will take a year to train anybody in saudi arabia to fight against isis in syria, and the iraqi army does not exist anymore, so they would have to be train. i don't know how long that would take and the kurd are not going to fight on the ground for the roast of iraq -- for the rest of iraq, so who exactly is left to do the fighting on the ground? >> almost no one. saudi arabia has its own plan, so does iran and everyone else. we cannot trust any of the regional powers. their end game is ] different fm ours and always will be. even if they sign documents saying we're supporting you, they will never be entirely on side. who is left to do this? i would argue that special forces needs to go in and take out the leadership of isis.
