researchers now say that the popular sugar substitute can hamper the way our bodies handle real sugar and they think it could set the stage for diabetes. how troubling is this? >> i was never a big fan of this and i've always expressed in the past, if you can avoid taking these artificial sweeteners, that's the way to go. this is from the institute of science. they have locked at about 20 miceoyq and they gave some of te sweeteners and some of the mice didn't get it. after 11 weeks the blood sugar was high in the ones that took this. it's supposed to make us lose weight so what's going on over here? they found out there's the possibility of some weight gain. even though the study is short and we need longer followup, taking some of these suiteners. another study of 181 participants and they found

among them the blood sugar actually went up and could be causing some of this prediabetes. what are we talking artificial sweeten sweetens? it was to cut calories so they added a lot of fillerst which high fructose corn sewyrup. they are hidden in processed meat, in your free fat yogurt and you are not aware of this. it really changes the chemistry of the gut in the system and it can affect us. >> what do you do? >> a lot of people use the sweeteners so instead of using the sweeteners, i prefer the organic raw sugar. i prefer aguy va nectar

sweetener. what are things people should be doing? >> you're really serious about this. >> i don't mess around. >> first of all we have to distinguish between high fructose corn syrup which is natural but loaded up versus sack rin, nutra sweet, splenda, those are completely artificial and that's what the study looked at. i'm going to give you a biology course. there's something called disby oesz. you got good bacteria and bad bacteria. this biosis causes the stomach to have more bad than good. you don't want that. that's why i tell everybody to take probiotics. you want to keep the good and bad in balance. the studies that are out and it's very preliminary and it's in mice, looks like when you have high doses of these artificial sweeteners, they get rid of the good bacteria in your stomach causing too much sugar

many women may not be fully prepared for the changes that come with this new stage in life. dr. siegel, i want to start with you. the women who are experiencing menopause, many of them turn to the hormone replacements. i want to go straight there and find out if you recommend them. >> i'm going to answer that but i first want to say what menopause is. it's when you stop having your period for one year. but ten years leading up to that are loaded with symptoms, hot flashes, bone loss, mood changes. this is what we have to look at ten years in advance. now, to answer your question, because of the point i just made about all the other things associated with menopause besides just the menstrual si cycle, hormone replacement therapy is worth considering in some women. i'm not going to give a blanket for it or against. the problem, it increases the

risk of breast cancer. i believe that. you might want to consider that. it seems to decrease your risk of colon cancer on the other hand. it certainly decreases hot flashes, mood changes. it helps all around. it decreases initially your risk of heart disease, initial. so i think it's worth considering for a short period of time. in my practice, arthel, the biggest problem is women that just stay on it and stay on it and then all your risks go up, cancer, heart disease, stroke. older women should not be on replacement therapy and there are other things we can offer them, antidepressants, cooling pillows. any woman that's gone through this will say cold pillows, but it doesn't work. it's a very, very hard period of time. >> it's a difficult period of time. i'm sorry i'm going to dominate this becausm÷e i'm a oc)ijgirl. every girl or woman wome have different symptoms as females.

i want to know if you think there are foods that you can eat like es stroe gin rich foods. how do we get through this? >> when you're talking about the national menopause awareness, you have to celebrate the day, turn something negative into a positive things. women should be empowered to make a big difference in their life. as you're getting through premenopause to mid 40s to 50s, you should be aware of the fact that it's not going to be the same. things are going to change. the hormonal changes are going to change the way our vessels are going to function in women. there are going to be stiff vessels. fat starts to store and you would change from pear shape to apple shape. what would you do ahead of time.

sure you give to patients. >> what if you don't have a yut russ? >> i want people to know the medical part is you're not making estrogen anymore or progesterone. i can do a blood test to tell this. if you think you might be going into menopause, ask your doctor to test you for it. exercise is crucial. keeping your weight down is crucial. sleeping at night is crucial. >> that's2[ a good one. >> decreasing stress, soy replaces some of that estrogen. omega 3 fatty acids are wonderful during menopause. this is the natural approach. then if you still can't sleep and you're having the hot flashes, we can use medications. this past year the fda approved paxle as a special indication. >> paxle? >> that's right. the antidepressant paxle for night sweats and hot flashes. i see you shaking your head. >> i don't like medication. >> i want to say that, i believe

about deep vain thrombosis, what causes itnd what we can do about it. chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. chantix reduced the urge for me to smoke. it actually caught me by surprise. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. if you notice any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these, stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some could be . . symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. use caution when driving or operating machinery. common side effects include nausea, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. i did not know what it was like to be a non-smoker. but i do now. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.

thrombosis, blood clots, how and why do they form and why is it difficult to get rid of them? doctor, first, what are they and what do you feel? >> in short, we call them dvts. it is a thrombosis, a blot clot that can start in the deep veins of your body, mostly start from lower extremities. you will feel swollen calf, usually have pain in the lower extremities, redness, swelling, difficulty walking and know something is not right. you can feel it.

dvt, if you take care of it, it should go away. the problem is by getting anticoagulation and breaking up those clots. if it goes unrecognized, those clots with break off and they can travel to your lungs. at this point they are known as pulmonary embolism. if you get short of breath, you can't breathe well, heart rate goes up, chest pain, call 911. that would be an example of pulmonary embolism that can kill. out out of every 100 people in america with dvt end up dying from this pulmonary embolism. that clot can also go to the brain. that's called stroke. you can have heart attack from this. how do you prevent this? the cause of it is obviously surgery is one of them. you could have hip replacement. a lot of pelvic surgeries with do it. for prolonged trip. ten-hour flight one sit and your

leg swells up, immobility. trauma. pregnant women who smoke. that's a huge red flag. if you are on contraceptive pills. what we do as surgeons after surgery, we always put those devices you spoke about, compression stockings, the machine that constantly pumping the blood out so you don't get blood clots. >> you talk about sitting, the warnings about airplanes. i always get up and stand in the back. >> that's the real should i worry question. everyone asks all the time i'm going on a long plane flight, should i worry. you had surgery. you got to be on the lookout. you shouldn't worry. have you a family history of blood clots, a factor 5 deficiency where you make too many blood clots. be checked for are that. if you're a smoker. if you're on birth control pills. if you're on that long plane flight, more than to you hours, get up, stretch. walk around. drink a lot of water. i'm going to tell some patients to take an aspirin out there. what do i look for. you look for a swollen leg.

through yogurt. >> i actually like dairy. i think a couple of servings a day will generally do it for you. but i want to admit something to you on the show today. my wife is right, as usual. i've been having an argument with her for years about whether to have skim milk or whole milk. she believes that skim milk is loaded with sugar or 1% milk or 2% milk. she believes in full throttle milk. these studies -- not only this one -- several show you've got to have the whole milk to get the benefit. so i'm admitting as usual, honey, you're right. the second thing is it's got to be grass fed. if you want all the vitamins are you supposed to get, vitamin k-2, all the calcium you need -- there's 44 million people out there over the age of 50 with osteoporosis or bone loss. they've got it get their calcium. the best place is with whole milk and it should be grass fed. >> how do you know if it is

grass fed? >> you can check that. >> on the carton? >> yes, you can check that. it may be more expensive. decreases your risk of heart disease, lowers your blood pressure, decreases your risk of diabetes. does it increase your risk of prostate cancer? >> i'm not aware of that causing prostate cancer. the other thing is i'm happy that my wife doesn't tell me what kind of milk to drink. i have a totally different take. it is not like we agree or disagree. don't think really dairy is good for you. i think it causes a lot of inflammation. i think if you take one or two portions a day, yogurt, whatever fits you, is fine. most study shows that dairy causes inflammation. i don't like it for inflammatory bowel disease. there are many other ways you can get your calcium through diet and vitamins. you will do well. i'm not a big fan of dairy. i know5h;u children should have if they like milk or yogurt. but for us, i'm not a big fan of
