all day today. they found things, not knowing whether they were relevant or not them did what we asked them to do. they stopped them didn't touch it. they called, they communicated to experts. we made an evaluation. regardless of whether the searches yielded anything of value to our investigation, we'll continue our work. we're going to continue to work relentlessly until w find hannah graham. until we find hannah graham. we're going to work relentlessly. when i say we, i just don't mean the charlottesville police department. i mean every law enforcement agency that stepped up to the plate and said, what do you need? when i say we, i'm talking>çé t all of you and every member of this community and in this country that has been touched by hannah graham. search efforts would come and over the weekend and kind of next steps for youmwt and your
12:31 pm
team? >> thank you, chief. >> my name is mark. i'm the search coordinator for the virginia department of emergency management. monday, we received a request from chief longo and his staff requested our assistance with a missing persons commission. on average, we get a request similar requestebj about 80 tima year. most of those do not turn into what we are looking at here today. i came to charlottesville. we began working with the chief and his staff looking at the information that they had, the leads. we were putting search teams, ground teams, canine teams, we were working through city. it brings its own challenges. as we began working through this, by tuesday, into tuesday we began to realize that if we're going to cover the city, there's going to have to be a much greater effort.
12:32 pm
more manpower than what we could provide what it would take to cover the city to some reasonable american that you are we are certain we've looked everywhere that we can possibly find. so on wednesday, chief longo and i began to discuss a plan of what it would take at that time to bring in the community, engage the community, which at that time was already, there was some push from the community wanting to be involved and we knew there was an interest. clearly there was an interest. the question is how will we do it? so we spent two days planning, logistical coordination. at the same time we're still running search tasks with our own people with the various search and rescue teams. we began working toward that plan. working with the university of virginia, uva which has been a fabulous partner. we could not ask for any greater support. they gave us the arena. once i knew we had the arena, we pretty much had what we needed to bring in.
12:33 pm
we also realized that we had to have some way to gauge the numbers of volunteers who may be interested, who may want to participate. we have to figure out how much people we'll feed. how much safety vests we'll need. we have to have all the details wired down. so with some very talented university of virginia students, they set us up with very little effort an online registration system. we asked everyone in the community who registered, pre registered in that registration system to give us those numbers. to figure out how we would do that. and so we would put that together and move forward. that turned out to be almost 2,000 people. that registered on that. now, not all 2,000 came out. however, i'm proud to say that the community of both uva, the city of charlottesville, there
12:34 pm
were over 1,200 people that stemmed forward. they gave us two glorious days. yesterday was a good day. we covered a tremendous amount of ground. by the end of yesterday we had already covered about 65% of the city. we still have teams out there right now. search efforts are still continuing and they will continue to about 6:00 p.m. only the, 1800 hours. we estimate by the time we finish, we'll get 85% of the city. that's very close to our objective of the 100%. at this time i can't say enough. the chief talked about the volunteers and they come out for their own reasons. i don't know how many parents, looking for their own child i believe. people coming out to replenish people with water and offer them food and cringe. there are stories of them being
12:35 pm
cheered on. as they moved along and it touches my own heart. i will tell that you friday was my own daughter's birthday and as much as i love my daughter, there's no place else i would rather be. an emotional search there in charlottesville, virginia, for hannah graham. we've been covering this. leland is on the ground. if you're there i want to bring you in. before i talk to you, before that, this press conference we're listening to you now. we had the charlottesville police chief, timothy longo. he is extremely emotional and he uttered the words, jesse matthew multiple times in that press conference for the first time. before then they would only refer to the person of interest. quote, chief longo said, i believe jesse matthew is the last person hannah graham was seen with before she van he
12:36 pm
shalled off the face of the earth. if you can hear me, the police chief also reported that jesse matthew showed up at the police station yesterday with a couple of family members with him. jesse matthew was then given an attorney. and then he walked out with that attorney. this happened without the police being able to question him first. and chief longo said that he sped away from that police station at a high rate of speed, quote. and they are looking for this guy. of course, he is no longer just a person of interest. he is named there. so tell me what you took out of that press conference, leland. >> reporter: really striking. the thing is that jesse matthew sped out. town, out of the county at a high rate of speed and there are now arrest warrants for charges
12:37 pm
unrelated to hannah graham but this is the police' way to try to get him back. they let us know that jesse matthew was under surveillance. he called it overt, not covert surveillance. he had to step back in time to realize how this case çunfolde. hannah graham, 18 years old, sophomore at the university of virginia. friday night a week ago disappeared into thin air about 1:00 in the morning. and through the week, police were able to zero in on jesse matthew. that's the fellow whose picture we've been showing you. 6'2", 270 pounds. a very big man. 32 years old with dreadlocks. according to police he put his arm around hannah graham about 1:30 in the morning along the charlottesville pedestrian mall and walked with her into a restaurant about a block from where i'm standing called tempo. at that point they had some drinks according to police. and as you heard him say, they
12:38 pm
believe jesse matthew was the last person to have contact with hannah until she quote, vanished. this is the key part. they have searched his car. they have searched his apartment. at least if what we've heard right now, if they have evidence to arrest him, they haven't shown it and they haven't gotten a warrant yet. that is a key point. they talk about how this has gripped the community. the university of virginia students getting involved, helping to accommodate and count the number of volunteers. almost 2,000 people. in community out there to help in the search for hannah graham. right now apart from trying to locate this jesse matthew, the number one priority is to find hannah graham. >> absolutely. that's one thing that lawyers will tell you is definitely complicating this case. no one knows for sure what happened to her shelf vanished about eight days ago now. no one knows for sure what
12:39 pm
happened to her. so what do you question him about? what do you charge him with in this case if you were going to arrest him? that's the evidence they're looking for. and over the past two days there have been thousands out searching for her. they've used dogs and infrared helicopters, daytime search helicopters. we walked with people along railroad tracks, into thickets. and remember, charlottesville is in the middle of the mountains. it is a rural country, wooded areas, there are an awful lot of hiding spots if someone want to do evil and then cover up their tracks. that's what they're trying to narrow down. it is like looking for a needle not in a hay stack but a hay barn. >> let's go to the news conference. >> to help them find their daughter. that's all they want. for somebody to tell them where
12:40 pm
hannah graham is. so i'm going to take a few questions. i can promise you, nothing that will come out of my mouth will mean as. as what will come out of tlss. before i take your questions, i want to say, mr. and mrs. graham will not be taking questions. they just want to speak to you. yes, ma'am. >> when you saw jesse matthew driving at a high rate of speed, do you believe -- [ inaudible ]. >> why are not you arrested him? do you know where he is now? >> let me answer the question in the order it was asked. it was state and federal officials outside the jurisdiction of charlottesville so none of my folks made those observations. i can't tell you what was
12:41 pm
motivating his reckless driving behavior. it was obvious, i would think, to the officers that were there. he got in the car and he drove away at a speed that was at a high rate of speed and behaving in driving behavior that was reckless. i can't speculate on the rationale. we are aggressively pursuing a location. and providing he does not surrender himself, we will go there and we will arrest him. >> the time line was not clear. when was this speeding taking place? right after left? the day after? >> it was after he appear here yesterday. at some point there after. yes, sir. >> what time was that? >> late afternoon. the officers encountered him after that.cj shortly after that.
12:42 pm
probably within 15 minutes of when he left the police department. >> do you have a location or a street that that happened on? >> no, sir. not that i can release at this point. it was on the east side of the community. >> do you have a previous mug shot of him that you're releasing? >> at such time as he is charged with a crime, we will release that. >> do you have any previous ones? >> not that we'll release at this point but i will tell you that we've had many discussions about that very issue. >> is mr. matthew now a suspect or is he still just a person of interest? >> he is a person with whom we would like to talk to about the whereabouts of hannah graham. >> clarify where you saw him speeding. were state police -- in albemarle county? >> yes, ma'am. in albemarle county. when do you expect to hear from the crime lab? >> great question. i wish it was today. i wish it was yesterday, actually. we're hoping for tomorrow at the
12:43 pm
very latest tuesday morning. when we don't hear something by midday tomorrow, we'll reach out to the crime lab to see if there is any way in the world that they can expedite their work. not to my knowledge, yes. >> as far as location for jesse matthew, how far should people in virginia be keeping an eye out for him? >> four corners of the nation. and beyond. >> what was he driving? >> i don't know the answer to that. if there comes an appropriate time to give that you information, i will. i don't know whose vehicle was. >> you have so much surveillance video of hannah. do you have her leaving the tempo restaurant? do you have surveillance video of her getting into his car? >> is that something you're willing to share? >> i'm not going to talk at all about the vehicle. we do have them together after they left tempo restaurant.
12:44 pm
so he is still with her at that time. that was to assist in the search and i was up in the chopper. >> can you clarify whether her -- 1:20 a.m.? >> not at this point. we're still working on the phone records with the phone companies. >> we're trying on validate those time stamps without assuming that they're accurate. anything else? yes, ma'am. >> how many eyewitnesses have you spoken with at this point? >> i would say well over 50 to 75 eyewitnesses. we've received over 900 tips in the last four days. >> [ inaudible ]. >> no.
12:45 pm
the coverage of 85% is the city. it is within the city. we will the pursue every lead. >> i'm going to bring the grahams in. jim reminded me of something courtney had mentioned in her first news conference. again a reminder, particularly to county residents with large tracks of hand. if you haven't already done so, please inspector otherwise search your property for tire tracks, for example, that were not made by your own vehicles, work vehicles or otherwise. if you find them, please call us. the rest, and i won't speak for the experts. my direction would be that the rest of mark's work will be driven by where the investigation takes us. again, we appreciate you being here.
12:46 pm
i would hike to ask john and susan graham to come and talk with you. please give them your attention. >> good afternoon. my name is john graham. i'm hannah's father. right here is sue, hannah's mother and my wife. as this nightmare for hannah,
12:47 pm
for us, hannah's big brother james, her grand parents and extended family continues, we would like to make this statement. we have been utterly overwhelmed this week by the generosity of everyone we have met and many more besides who we've been unable to meet. we understand that over 1,000 volunteers have been out combing charlottesville, looking for our daughter. yesterday and today, a similar number of wonderful people are out today searching. sue and i were out searching yesterday. so were some of our work colleagues, our friends, our neighbors from our home, hannah's friends from softball, hannah's friends from the high school team, high school and many others. the effort is much wider. members of the charlottesville community have turned out in
12:48 pm
force to help. her university friends have been helping. i read this morning that a gentleman came from as far away as baltimore, maryland, to help. thank you, sir. i read that trina was helping. thank you, ma'am. sue and i are utterly overwhelmed by this support for hannah and we cannot begin to express our thanks. we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. i think that the reason that hannah has such marvelous support is that this is every parent's worst nightmare. i am certain tf$qv everybody in this room and those watching know that what happened to hannah could happen to their child. we need to find out what happened to hannah and make sure that)j)[ it doesn't happen to anybody else.
12:49 pm
you have all i'm sure read about hannah. you'll have read that hannah is a second year student at the university of virginia, a skier, musician, softball player. she likes to help people and she is interested in a career in helping others. and just as a little example, last spring break, instead of hanging around on the beach like other students may have done, she spent a week in tuscaloosa rebuilding houses and helping the recovery from the devastating tornado. that's hannah. that's one hannah. but hannah is also our little girl. she is our only daughter. she is james' little sister. she is also, hannah is also the oldest granddaughter, both of my own parents and sue's parents. and she is actually my parents' only granddaughter. she is enormously precious to us all.
12:50 pm
and while you think of what we're going through, think of our parents as well. hannah's grand parents. they are literally an ocean away and they are not knowing what happened girl, their little granddaughter, and they're unable to help. it's awful for them. now, somebody knows what happened to hannah. we don't know who that is, but somebody knows what happened to hannah. and others may be watching and they may know something about what happened to hannah. and they may not even know that they know something about what happened to hannah. what do we know? we know hannah was downtown early saturday morning. we know hannah was distinctively dressed. did you see hannah? did anybody see hannah? did you see hannah?
12:51 pm
who saw hannah? please, please, please, if you have anything, however insignificant you may think it is, call the police tip line. anything just might help us bring hannah home. sue and i have received countless messages of support since this began. and i would like to read to you one e-mail we received this morning from one of hannah's high school teachers. it reads as follows. i am sure you are continually being inundated with hundreds of people reaching out daily, but i just wanted to touch base again to express some of my hope and confidence. throughout the week as i spoke with hannah's friends and teachers and countless other lives who have been affected by hannah's positivity, one theme
12:52 pm
shone brightly through each conversation, hope. not because that's what people feel like they should say at a time like this, but because of who hannah is. hannah is brilliant, resilient, determined, and loves life more than anyone else i know. everyone agrees, if anyone could get through this, it is hannah. i've been trying to frame my thoughts with the idea that every moment that passes, we are one moment closer to having hannah back. let's hope today is the day. a lovely message we received this morning. when i returned hom5ex from bringing hannah back to charlottesville beginning of term last month, i found she'd left this little guy behind. this is hannah's favorite white rabbit b.b. he was given to hannah by one of my friends when she was less than a week old.
12:53 pm
b.b. helped out in tuscaloosa, constant guardian, companion, and guardian angel until last month when she chose to return to charlottesville without him. constant companion, that is, except for about six months when hannah was 3 years old when he was lost in the nursery. we found b.b. and brought him home to hannah and to us. all we want to do now is to bring hannah home safely, and i appeal to anybody who knows anything. please, please help. thank you. >> capping off that emotional
12:54 pm
statement made by hannah graham's father, him bringing out b.b., hannah's favorite white rabbit, he says, given to her when she was less than a week old. that little white rabbit b.b. has been hannah graham's constant guardian, constant companion and guardian angel since then. clearly emotional. you have a statement there from -- again, that was her parents. her father john did all of the speaking. they told us they would only make a statement and not take questions. susan graham, hannah's mother, stood by his side. she became emotional, understandably, at one point. this nightmare for hannah -- it's a nightmare for hannah, for us, her brother, and her grandparents. he called out a few individuals by name and personally thanked them. he said i think the reason hannah has such marvelous
12:55 pm
support, because this is every parent's worst nightmare. we need to make sure what happened to hannah does not happen to someone else. he went on to tell us how hannah, a junior in college, a softball player, and speaking to her character. instead of taking a week off for spring break, hannah spent that week in tuscaloosa, alabama, helping to rebuild homes devastated by a recent weather event there. hannah graham is the oldest granddaughter of both of those parents, and she is his parents' only granddaughter. again, the emotions surrounds g i the search for hannah graham continues and is heightened now that we have heard from her father and having his wife, her mother, standing by his side. leland, i'm not sure if you were able to hear those comments. if you were, i would like to talk to you now. >> you know, it was heartbreaking to listen to those comments and to hear. the thing that struck mek5f moss
12:56 pm
talking about why so many people had come out to help hannah. her father said everyone knows what happened to hannah could happen to their child. that is the feeling you get here on the streets of charlottesville. there's a palpable fear here that this community has been rocked by something. one interesting note, one of the people that he talked about in his statement and thanked specifically is the aunt of another girl who disappeared here a couple of years ago. there have been five disappearances in five years. this is a community that is shaken to its core. there's a feeling of safety here, a feeling of the true innocence of college in this beautiful town that has now been wrecked. you did get a feeling from that family of just how shaken the rest of the community has been by the support they are getting and obviously now this entire community is focused on jesse matthews, a man seen on surveillance tape in dread locks who police say they believe is the last person to be with her
12:57 pm
before she disappeared, who's now on the lam. he's running from a class-one misdemeanor warrant. he=2éo headed out of town at a rate of speed, asking for a lawyer. police have made no bones about the fact they very much want to talk to him. now they have the power to arrest him if they'd like to. >> they are waiting for -- the police were able to search his car as well as his apartment, but they're waiting for these found from the crime lab. they're hoping to get those results no later than tuesday. hopefully before then. they desperately want to get whatever information that was found in the apartment as well as the car. they can glean perhaps some sort of solution here. they want to talk to jesse matthews, make no bones about it. police very long ago very emphatic about that. i want to bring you back to that press conference and her parents. the father pointed out -- he said, listen, we know the details. we know hannah was downtown
12:58 pm
early saturday morning. he adds, did you see y.cfhannah? did you see hannah? did anybody see hannah? if you did, please call the police tip hotline. he says with information, even if you think the information is insignificant. he then went on to read an e-mail he received this morning from hannah's high school teacher. again, just highlighting the character of who this brilliant young woman is. hannah graham there. it definitely really brings home why leland has touched that community so profoundly there. point is to find hannah graham. a delightful young woman by all accounts. delightful young woman, a remarkable young woman who went so far out of her way to help othe others, a selfless young woman. the other thing we learned from this press conference that was important is it was clear they
12:59 pm
have evidence they don't want to talk about. we have up until the point hannah graham goes into the restaurant, i've talked tohw fs who say they know the two of them were there. the key question is what happens after that? we had a very important question asked in that press conference of the detective sergeant who's been in charge of this investigation. do you have any surveillance tape from after the point they leave the restaurant? that is going to be a key piece of evidence. tight. also, the issue of the cell phone records. hannah graham sent a text message late in that night saying, i'm lost, to a friend. the question is, were they going to be able to get the records to determine the location that was sent from and where else her cell phone might have pinged off any towers around this area. >> leland, you've been covering this story. you feel the emotion there in town. stay on this
1:00 pm
story.on this the entire community work desperately to find hannah graham,áuniversity of virginia student, missing. we hope to find her. thanks for joining us. we'll continue with our coverage. welcome to "a healthy you." i'm carol alt. have you ever looked at someone and said, how do you do it? you look good, have a great job and family. today the editor of "outside" magazine will share some secrets on how you can have a fit, healthy, and happy life too. also, a few more secrets being shared on today's show. this time, how to age gracefully. it's possible. and we're going to learn how to do it. but first, you know that we're always trying to show you the newest and most popular fitness trends around from pilates to
