tv Sunday Housecall FOX News September 21, 2014 1:30pm-2:01pm PDT
1:30 pm
my way. that's it for today. i hope you've enjoyed the show. see you next time. you next time now for "sunday housecall." >> welcome. joining us is dr. david samadi, chairman and professor of urology and chief of robotic surgery. >> and dr. marc siegel, the author of "the inner pulse." doctors. >> how are you? good to see you. >> happy sunday. >> i want to start with a new warning. do you use artificial sweeteners? pour them in your coffee or tea? there's new troubling news. researchers say the popular sugar substitute can hamper the way our bodies handle real
1:31 pm
sugar. they think it could set the stage for diabetes. dr. samadi, how troubling is this? >> i was never a big fan of these. i've also expressed it very much in the past that if you can avoid taking these artificial sweeteners, that's the way to go. this is a study coming from israel from wiseman institute of science. what they have done is they have looked at about 20 mice. they gave some of these sweeteners and some of the mice didn't get it. after 11 weeks, basically the blood sugar was really high in the ones that took this. it's supposed to make us lose weight. so what's going on over here? they found out there's also a possibility of weight gain. even though the study is short and we need longer followup, they're cautioning people about taking some of these sweeteners. another study of 381 participants, and they found out the same thing. among them, their blood sugar went up and could be causing some of these prediabetes.
1:32 pm
why are we taking artificial sweeteners? what was the whole purpose of this? to cut down the calories because sugar was building up the calories. so they came up with these genetically modified bacterias. they also added a lot of fillers, which is high fructose corn syrup. all of this, they're all sugar. they're hidden all over our food chain system in processed meat, in your free fat yogurt. and you are not aware of this. what it does, it really changes the chemistry of the gut in the system and it can affect us. >> let's get dr. siegel in this. a lot of people use the sweeteners. instead of using the sweeteners, i prefer, you know, the organic raw sugar. i prefer agave nectar sweetener. what are some things other people -- >> you're serious about this. >> i don't mess around. i'm serious. >> first of all, we have to
1:33 pm
distinguish between what david was just talking about, which is high fructose corn syrup, which is natural, but it's very loaded up, versus what we're talking about now, which is splenda. those are completely artificial. that's what the study looked at. i'm going to give you a biology quiz. you got bacteria all over your body, but you have good bacteria and bad bacteria. dispiosis causes the stomach to have more bad bacteria than good bacteria. you don't want that. that's why i tell everybody to take probiotics. it's a great study from israel, but it's only in mice. when you have high doses of these artificial sweeteners, they get rid of the good bacteria in your stomach, causing too much sugar to be absorbed. diabetes can result. obesity can result. we need more studies on this. we need larger groups on this.
1:34 pm
the dose is important. there's 180 million people out there taking artificial sweeteners. the question is, and you brought this up already, what else would they take? i don't want them putting sugar back in their coffee.ryc >> how do you sweeten it? >> i don't use anything. >> me either. >> if you have to choose between artificial sweetener -- a lot of people are going to be surprised about what i'm going to say. if you have to choose between artificial sweetener and sugar, go for the sugar. trust me on this because a lot of times the aspartame in here when it get as breaked down, you're going to have a lot of formaldehyde and others that are neurotoxi neurotoxins. they can cause seizures. the issue with cancer has come up. as you remember, there was a lot of studies about aspartame and bladder cancer. >> proven not to be the case. >> that was saccharin. >> fda's actually making this a
1:35 pm
generally accepted risk. it's safe at this point. for the audience listening to this, they want to hear exactly what is the hidden secret behind this. don't touch it if you can avoid it. get them out. soda, diet soda is the biggest source of some of these hidden artificial sweeteners. unprocessed sugar is what you want. you want the organic coconut sugar. those are good ones. >> i agree that natural is better, but here's the thing. with 180 million people out there taking this, i got to make the point. natural is better, but sugar is bad for you too. my take home message today is you shouldn't use a lot of this stuff. for example, that saccharin study that eric brought up, they did remove that from the market for a while because it looked like it caused bladder cancer in rats. then they found out rats were prone to bladder cancer anyway. we don't know.
1:36 pm
i think that david's right. as more and more studies are done, we're going to find out these things are more and more healthy and should be used either judiciously or not at all. >> let me just say something. 180 million people are taking this because they're under the impression they would be losing weight and they're going to have less calories. that's false. it's a misnomer. it's misinformation. and we should try to educate them not to take these, if you can. >> if you want to to use a little sugar, how much? >> there is less calories in these, but they're sweeter actually. >> you can burn the calorie, but you're not going to get rid of the kind of burden it puts on the liver and the kidney. you don't need any added problems. and believe me, diet soda is not better than regular soda. it has a lot of artificial stuff that's not good for you. read about it. >> get rid of soda. >> honey is going to make it
1:37 pm
sweet. >> soda is bad for you. if you train your kids at a young age to not have soda pop, whether it's diet or regular, you're much better off. >> all right. when we come back, we're talking about this. it is a condition that affects millions of middle-aged women and coming up, we're going to get the truth about menopause. how and why it occurs and what you can do to deal with the changes that come with this new stage in life. stick around. h the changes h the changes that come with this new stage hoo, hoo, hoo h the changes that come with this new stage oohh, you got it! i love the looks of it. life. dr. siegel, i want to start with you. the women who are experiencing menopause, many of them turn to the hormone replacement. i want to the go straight there and find out if you recommend them. >> okay. i'm going to answer that, but i want to say first what menopause is. menopause is when you stop having your period for one year. up to that are loaded with symptoms. hot flashes, start having bone loss, mood changes. this is what we really have to look at, ten years in advance. now, to answer your question, because of the point i just made about all the other things associated with menopause, besides just, you know, the menstrual cycle, because of all these other things involved, hormone replacement therapy is worth considering in some women. i'm not going to give a blanket across the board or against. the problem with it, it increases your risk of breast cancer. if you're in a family where there's a lot of breast cancer, you might want to consider that. it seems to decrease your risk of colon cancer, on the other
1:42 pm
hand. it certainly decreases your hot flashes. it decreases your mood changes. it helps all around. it decreases initially your risk of heart disease. i think it's worth considering for a short period of time. in my practice, the biggest problem is women that just stay on it and stay on it and then all the their risks go up. risks of cancer goes up. risks of heart disease goes up. risks of stroke go up. older women should not be on hormone replacement therapy. there are other things we can offer them. antidepressants, cooling blankets and pillows. any woman out there can say, oh, cold pillows, but it doesn't work. it's a very, very hard period of time. >> it's a difficult period of time, and i'm sorry, i'm going to dominate this because i'm a girl. every girl has or woman, we all have different symptoms as females. you know, i want to know if you think -- are there foods you can eat? like estrogen rich foods, et
1:43 pm
cetera? how do we do this? how do we get through this, those women who are experiencing menopause? >> when you talk about national menopause awareness, you have to celebrate the day. turn something negative into a positive thing. women should be empowered to really make a big difference in their life. what does it mean? as you're getting through the premenopause, when you get to mid-40s and towards 50s, you should be aware of fact that it's not going to be the same. things are going to change. the hormonal changes are going to change the way our vessels are going to function in women. so there's going to be strict vessels. that means blood pressure. maybe your cholesterol will go up. >> bloated belly. >> fat starts to store. you'll change from pear shaped to aed. diet plays a big role. ast yoe p osteoporosis is a huge factor. 10 million americans suffer from this. 80% of them are women.
1:44 pm
one out of two women end up breaking a bone during the post menopau menopausal. soy is great. exercise plays a huge role. i always said that, you know, your bones are like a bank. the more money you have in the bank, the better retirement you're going to have, right? get to yoga. get your pilates. i know you run. you have to be careful about how much you run so you don't injure your knee. if it's under good training that, bone storage you have is going to last you and you're going to have a great one. hot flashes, as mark mentioned, these are the guests that show up, unexpected guests. it changes your whole quality of life. >> changes your attitude. >> so there are medications that i'm sure you give to patients. >> what if you don't have a uterus? >> that's more likely you would replace the estrogen.
1:45 pm
i want people out there to know that the medical part of this is you're not making estrogen anymore. you're not making progesterone anymore. i can do a blood test to tell this. if you think you might be going into menopause, ask your doctor to test you for it. exercise is crucial. keeping your weight down is crucial. sleeping at night is crucial. >> that's a good one. >> increasing stress. soy replaces some of that estrogen. omega-3 fatty acids are great. this is the natural approach. rt night and are having hot flashes, we can use medications. just this past year, the fda approved paxil for night sweats, for hot flashes. but again, i see you shaking your head. >> i don't like medications. >> i believe in the natural way first. lifestyle alteration first. but for women are really, really
1:46 pm
suffering and don't want to take hormone replacement therapy, you might consider that. >> if you don't have your uterus, most doctors take the benefit of the hormones and give it to you. that's a discussion you should have with your doctors. that's an individual one. let me just also say, two seconds, september was prostate cancer month. all the women that came to support on this facebook women for prostate health, became so successful, including yourself. i want to thank everyone for doing that. >> i want to make sure every woman understands, everybody has ways it affects them. just because i'm saying i don't like medication, i don't like hormone replacement, i know people are going through it and going through it tough. i want to acknowledge that. >> great point. thank you. >> great point. >> it can be painful, unexpected, sudden, and deadly. coming up, the doctors will talk about deep vein thrombosis. what causes it and what we can all do about it. the doctors wil

>> back to our weekly segment "should i worry," a vower asks, could the doctors discuss blood clots and how they form and why it is difficult to get rid of them. what are they? how do you know if you have them? >> we call them dvts, a blood clot can form in the deep vein of the body mostly from the lower extremity and you will feel a swollen path with pain in the lower extremity. the redness, swelling, difficulty walking. something is not right. >> dvt, if you take care of it; not a big deal. it will go away. the problem is is if you don't

take care of it or it is unrecognized the clots break off and travel to your lungs and then the embolism is deadly and if you are short of breath suddenly, if you cannot breathe, your heart rates goes up, chest pain, call 9-1-1. that is an example of something that can kill, 1 in 100 who have dvt die from the embolism. 600,000 americans have dvt. we also, it can go through the brain and that is called stroke. you can have a heart attack. how do you prevent this? moving -- the cause, obviously, is surgery if you have hip replacement and pelvic surgeries do it. a prolonged trip like a ten-hour flight and your leg swells, inmobility, surgery, pregnant women who smoke. smoking is a huge red flag on

couple of servings a day will generally do it. i admit on the show today: my wife is right. i have been having an argument with her for years whether to have skim milk or whole milk. she believes that skim milk is loaded with sugar or 1 percent or 2 percent milk and believes in full throttle milk. these studies and this is edge -- only one, show that you have to have the whole milk. second, it has to be grass fed. if you want the vitamins, all the calcium you need, there are 44 million people over the age of 50 with osteoporosis or bone loss, they have to get their calcium. the best place is with whole milk and it should be grass fed. >> how do you know if it is grass fed. >> you can check. you can check that. >> on the carton?
1:59 pm
>> yes. i am encouraging everyone. here is what it does: decreases risk of heart disease, lowers blood pressure, let keyses risk -- de decrease risk of heart disease. >> i have a different take. it is not that we agree or disagree. i don't think dairy is good for you. i think it causes a lot of ininmation. if you take one or two portions a day, whatever, it is fine but most studies show we dairy causes inflammation. there are many other ways to get your calcium through diet and vitamins. you will do well. i am not a big fan of dare are you but children should have it if they like milk or yogurt but for us, i am not a fan. >> i like yogurt. >> of although it.
