increasing international uncertainty. eric shaun joins us live. what did he say? >> heather, the president and first lady are attending the lunchion. but earlier in the speak in the august chamber in the united nation's he called on the other nations to have a forceful response against terrorism and extremism and vowed that isis would be destroyed and called it a network of death. during the 38 minute speech, the president admitted there is an unease and saying that the only language understood by killers and the language of force. and he praised the coalition and attacked isis and calling for a broader coalition. and said muslims must reject

extremism and vowed that the u.s. would not be an upping power. >> we will use our military might in a campaign of a strikes to roll back isis. and we'll train and equip forces fighting against the terrorist on the ground. we will work to cut off their financing and stop the flow of fighters in to and out of the region and already over 40 nations offered to join this coalition. today, i ask the world to join in this effort. >> he also critized russia and foreign minister la brov. no nation can claim a neighbor's territory. and touched on ebola and iran and discussed isis and the int terrorism. he said no god condones this.

>> eric there was a lot of grim faces in there today. what is the reaction so far? >> there is a different reaction to previous appearances of the president because of the emergency and intensity of the crisis and the a mir of qatar took to the podium and qatar sponsored and helped isis and even he said that the world must redouble the affects of terrorism. >> we cannot succeed in the war on terror, if the people are not convinced it is their war and not oppressing them. syrian people have suffered from tyranny and the international community did not heed the appeals for help of the iraqi people themselves first victims of terrorism in iraq. >> reporter: the president will

personally chairing a united nations security council meeting to pass a resolution to stop the fighters that are flooding to isis, an estimated 15,000 or so. >> we'll see if that resolution has any teeth to. it thanks. >> a new round of a strikes hitting syria and targeting an area under isis control. it is making contingency plans if people cross to turkey to keep the extremist. conner powell has more from jerusalem, conner. >> reporter: keeping pressure on isis today. coalition is focusing the firepower on the roads and on the border links that allow isis to move back and forth and move equipment and fighters between iraq and syria u.s.- led air

strikes struck a syrian town 13 times and this is a key border crossing that isis uses. and the u.s. strategy is a plan to divide isis and cut them off from resupplies and move them out of the current positions. and the u.s. was the only country that launched attacks in syria, but today, one of the arab partners fired in syria though the pentagon is not saying which one. despite 48 hours of a strikes isis is in control of large parts of iraq and syria and wreaking havoc. knowledge refugees are flooding neighboring turkey. 150,000 syrians moved to turkey in the last week or so. that could jump to 400,000 in coming days. you can get a picture of how bad things are in the border area of iraq and syria and turkey.

the big question is whether or not turkey will stop and stem the flow of fighters in to syria that's what everyone is waiting to see what turkey will do going forward and how much they will support the coalition against isis. >> you remember the case of the radical muslim pitcher. he was acquitted of terrorist charges and he arrived in jordan's capitol city. hours after he was acquitted and involvement in a plot to target american tourist back in 2,000. the judge ruled there was not enough evidence to convict him. he was acquitted in a foiled plan to attack an american school. >> as we listen to the the president's remarks today and previously, critics are saying

he ignores reality in favor of rhetoric. brett stephens foreign affairs columnist with the wall street journey. he writes. where president obama stands apart in the combination of ideaity and ignorance and what the president knows and maybe the answer is not a lot. brett is here to defend those thoughts. tough words for the president. >> i am increasingly not alone. we have a hollow president that says things that are at variance with the facts. it comes in mundane remarks. he talked to the new york remarks and talked about how well asia was doing. >> you cannot generalize across the globe in reaction to tom freedman's question of global disorder. there is a bunch of places where good news is coming.

he has a rigid ideaization and crediting the u.n. as an institution that embodied the ideas of peace and tollerance. and the reality is. we have a reality peaceful and freer world because of the reality and application of american power. and this is something that the president wants to play down. i looked at the speech and a collection of cliche. and the worryying one was the investment in collective efforts and what we need is american leadership. and you mentioned in that report that he said in 2007. that bashar's days are numbered. >> this is another case of questi questioning his information. it is clear that the group in syria from which the assad family would come and they were

protestors returned to the streets of ferguson, missouri after a makeshift memorial to michael brown was burned. brown is a teenager that was shot and killed in early august. 200 protestors gathered and smashed the windows of a beauty shop and appears to set a fire. two cops were hurt. and calls are coming in worried about children getting safely home from school. >> kids fearing to come home and parents are fearing their kids coming home, that has to stop. >> again-year-old michael brown was shot. and a decision on that is

expected from the state grand jury in midoctober. new developments today in the hunt for an accused cop killer. police narrowing the search area for eric frien. as he continues to elude captures, tensions are understandably running high in the neighborhood because of all of the police activity. we'll go to rick. rick, they thought they had him narrowed down and what do they think now? >> reporter: it is a frustrating few days as they continue to scour the woods behind us on snow hill a couple of miles from where he lived with his parents x. now they are going to abandoned homes and checking the woods and looking for a suspected killer and there

are dozens more officers here. and police are here for days and confident that frien is hiding. based on the sitings and things they have retrieved. he may have been planning the trooper shootings and escape for months if not years. they found an ak 47 and a mmo in the woods that belonged to him. they have found more stuff that they are not talking about. >> i have to think that all of the residents there must be nervous about this. police say he's after police and notes inially locals. when a guy gets desperate, you don't know what he will do? >> little kids who are frightened because of word of a man with a gun in the woods.

residents are told to lock their doors and windows and business owners are losing money because people are afraid to go and shop and use the local businesses. other people are blocked out of their homes because of the road blocks and forced to sleep in their cars because they couldn't get home. police understand the frustration. and they sort of open the doors for the residents if they can prove they live here. heather, there is a new's conference scheduled by the state police. and they will update the search efforts and release interesting information. >> that is two hours from now. if you find out what they found come back to us. the majority of the nation's

the aisle they could be in trouble larry is the director for center for politics in the university of virginia. currently the split is 32 republicans to 18 democrats and you are plowing through all of the data, howre things looking? >> we have 36 races for governor this november and 28 incumbents out of them are running and there are ten races for governor that could be close on both sides. i think you will have switches on both sides and democrats are in trouble like states like illinois and connecticut and kansas and florida and we'll have to see how the races develop now and election day. we have six weeks left. >> in the cases and states where there are things that are not looking too good for the

incumbent, is there any s5! of a theme there? >> it is very state specific. i found that people vote for governor in a different way than they vote for senator or house member. >> that tends to be idea logical and focused on what is happens in washington at the time. people live in their states and have to live under their governor and policies. and it is much more specific to the candidates that are running in the gubnatorial contest. >> let's talk about what the states that you are considering will go to republicans and then those to democrats. >> yes, well, let's take illinois for example. that is a deeply blue state. here is a classic example of where it is tough for republicans to get elected to the senate though they have one

republican senator. in the gubnatorial contest, governor quinn is unpopular and has low favorability standings and the republican is got money. and on the other side florida, for example. i don't count governor rick scott out. i actually think he is tiny bit ahead of charlie crist, former republican governor for race. florida is a competitive state and you can expect that to be close on election night. >> some of the states that you are considering competitive and florida and colorado. they are big states and bringing a lot of votes. how does this translate in

>> jon, dismandeling isis. i took a deep breath, it brings heightened awareness and heightened stress to wall street as it has done this week. we have had air strikes on isis for a couple of days and initially it caused jump in the fear gauge and the fear index. gold popped. but the markets have stabilized and during the president's speech. there was nervousness on wall street. and since then, since the president is finished, we moved to new highs and up a hundred points. and led by consummer and health care stocks and good news on home sales here at home. and everybody is keeping a queen eye on what is going on, on syria and the islamic state. we saw new home sales surging

isis. the coalition of nations is extending military actions into syria. the nation of qatar is playing a supporting role in the operation even as a number of the private citizens are big money donors and continuing to funnel money to isis. we have the admir who is a former supreme allied commander of nato. you say going after the money is a key part of choking off isis? >> indeed. look at these investors, if you will, as angel investors or venture capitalist. they are investing in terrorism. and that is coming out of the private sector in sunni

countries. >> it is time to choke it off. >> what do they get out of sending millions to isis. >> they get acts of terror. and they get a push back into the shia world. this is sunni money deployed against shia regime and the united states and allies. >> how hard is it to track down the contributions and the people who receive them, are we able to shut off that spicot. >> we need the governments of the individuals involved to take action. we need to go to the governments of the nation with explicit evidence to choke off this activity by their citizens. and we have technology to do this. >> but the government of qatar participated in the air strikes on the opening night of the campaign in syria?

>> let's hope that that indicates a real change of heart. perhaps it does. certainly the recent activities of the islamic state are hideous and over the top that it has to pause them. >> in the meantime it is an air campaign to this point. the president made it clear that he does not intend to involve forces on the ground. what do you think? >> we already have forces on the ground in iraq, my guess is over time, we are going to find that we will need to think seriously about the option of limited number of u.s. boots on the ground in syria as well. and special forces to do spotting and we have precise targeting and training in the syrian resistance and we'll need to have that capability in syria and in the moment, key thing is

to put isis under a three- front war. and iraqi security forces from the south pushing up and bombing campaign the west. and if we do that. we'll see how strong they reallia are. >> & what about qatar and ua e and saudis to contribute ground forces of their own and make them do heavy lifting on the ground. >> i am sure those discussions are in progress right now. an arab speaker on the ground will be much more capable than an english speaking u.s. soldier. it is crucial to moving forward. and these nations need to provide bases in the area and logistic support and funding and i am sure those conversations

explosion of one and half million cases by january. disin fekting is key. >> what is the deal with this? >> the difficulty in ebola. it spreads in a hospital when a patient is brought in for treatment. it is a significant risk and that is what happened in the american doctor and volunteer when they worked in the hospital from liberia. the virus gets all over the patient and the surfaces. and so the room needs to be cleaned. >> the virus out and not getting infected in the process. you can send people in to try to clean up all of the surfaces. but you know. i am sure you cleaned your basement or kitchen and there is little bits left on the surface.

to end-all wars and now known as a war- time president. all on the top of the hour. a massive fire keeping crews busy. a three alarm inferno. it consumed the building. and crews fighting it from the rooftop and ground. thankfully no injuries were reported. we don't know what caused that fire. new information about the search for missing uva student hannah graham. they are charging a suspect in her disappearance. graham was last seen with 32-year-old jesse matthews. they have a felony arrest warrant against him. he's not been seen since he vanished from the police station

on saturday. police searched his apartment and are not revealing the information that they have that resulted in charges against him. joining us on this case. marry ellen and a former fbi profiler. there are so many mysteries here. initially charge him with just reckless driving? he took off from the police station after he went in to talk to them and said he wanted a lawyer and he ran out and tore out of there. and now it is upgraded. why? >> that's unclear to me as well. usually in an investigation like. this if everything lines up correctly. we learn about the suspect in a quiet way. we want to find out his habits

and who he associates with. and he had a storage area. and if there are rural areas where he goes to. we don't want to have such a prominent presence in his life before we move forward with the more serious charges f. he is a suspect, you want to develop the information for the serious charges and not reckless driving and so that is confusing as well. >> the chief longo was pointed and direct in the statements he made about jesse matthews and saying we want to talk to him. and we think he knows answers and you say it is a mistake to be so public about this guy? >> i can't say it is a mistake. i am not involved in the case and they haveckç access to the information that i don't. but what could have happen, now, jesse is unknown.

we don't know where he is. and the reason for him leaving, is that he's afraid and knows he is a suspect and having him in the area and conducting an investigation could lead us to hannah. and that's my concern. i would not say, according to marriy ellen they did it wrong. i don't know what they were dealing with at the time. >> and you say there are aspects of her behavior that need to be explained. what do you mean by that? >> again, for me because i have not seen all of the video. she left her friends and she was alone and walking around and appears to be disoriented. and my question was, is that coming from alcohol that she's used? you need to go back and do her victimology and find out if that

that americans consume and drink by 20% by the year 2025. now, they're not. let's talk about this. why are they doing this now? these companies are seeing the writing on the walls. consumers have already taken steps to decrease the amount of calories they consume from sodas. sales have been going down, and now the companies are answering to this. >> sales have gone down significantly, so maybe they're just trying to come up with a new -- a new marketing strategy and a new technique. >> that's one of the criticisms about this. you know what, any step in the right direction is one that i will accept. as a physician, i'm happy to see this kind of move in this direction. >> one of the things they say that they're going to do is sell more of those little cans. you see them sometimes at the grocery store or on an airplane. they're about 7 ounces or so. i'm wondering if they're going to sell those but charge you the same price we currently pay. are we getting scammed here? >> well, it's a possibility, but we have to look at this.

yes, we have an image problem in this country. we see something. we want to consume it. we don't want to leave our plate half empty or we want to leave it alone. we want to consume all of it. if it means that people will consume less and that's all they'll take, that's fine. the possibility is people will have two or three of those. >> i want to hear what their strategy is. let's listen to some folks from the beverage association. >> because coke sells a lot of water and low calorie drinks, you push them as opposed to the soda, that right? >> or soda in a smaller portion. those mini cans are flying off the shelves. those 7.5 ounce minicans. >> suppose i drink three of them. >> that's your choice. you've been to the gym too, right? >> you approve of this, of course. >> we think it's a great step forward for good nutrition and better health for children and their families. >> that was the american beverage association a short while ago on fox business network. you like this idea. they say it could cut calories -- they won't cut calories in a regular soda, so

that's not going to change, but, rather, they want to start selling more of these low cal type drinks. >> correct. low calorie, zero calorie. >> is that necessarily healthier, though? >> it may not be. we don't know what they're exactly talking about. these might be zero calorie beverages with artificial sweeteners, and we need to look at the entire can. what are these sweeteners doing? they had a big study a week ago that showed that it may increase the risk of diabetes. it was done in mice so no recommendations are being made with cutting this out completely. this may not be the best option for us. >> okay. >> look for more of those little cans on store shelves. >> best things in life are free. water. >> john. president obama addressing the united nations this morning calling for a global force to combat isis. was the message well received? we'll get new reaction at the top of the hour. ugh. heartburn.
