w. bush how is that not hypocrisy? >> i don't think that is true. the initial response always, for everyone to pull around the president. that is the way it is when military action like this is in the brain. that is what happened. how long this will last is a different story. the press -- there have not been that map adults in washington. base through there have been a lot of playing politics. can you mutt do that when troops are at risk. you are seeing the media covering what is happening. it is not politic to take a stand. even in the tough senate races you do not see either side hammering the president or strongly supporting him because they don't want that to happen. >> i will come back to that. is president obama who has been

the obama white house has insisted on editing these reports when a white house intern fainted and said that should be deleted because it would mere the woman. when the president talked about press freedom and contrast that with limited photos on the trip, the reference was removed. christina, how serious are these instances with the white house fiddling with the reports? >> i've written these reports before. they requested changes be made. they weren't changing them themselves. i covered an event once for the first lady. i wrote in my report they hadn't been checking bags. they viewed that as a security issue. they let it stand, but they were angry with me aefrts. what is weird about this is the

actual process. >> it's a disbeautiful channel. >> also how they don't do it in foreign media. they send it to one another. when you have that possible filter when they're reviewing things, it opens up a lot of trouble. and the white house is very, very image conscious. >> the white house says there were only a handful of incidents, like with michelle r thought that should be off the report. are there any of these instances that trouble you? >> the white house is always going to try and influence what's getting out. it's going to try to get its way. i think it's wrong that they have that ability, but i think the way to solve it is to remove them from the hub, the white house correspondents should be able to get the full report distributed to everybody without going through the white house. >> does this indicate a mind-set of trying to pressure reporters to delete things seen as negative? >> yeah, i think so.

we know michelle obama works out. we've seen her arms, right? but it's the bathroom of the things and it's the way it is set up creates the opportunity for the white house to exercise prior restraint and to litigate these matters. the reporters, it's not hard to create an e-mail list where you blast this out yourself and cut the white house out of the process. >> and to be bullies. there is an element of pressure. every white house has done it, but the obama administration has done it. >> let's talk about one of the biggest issues of the week. that is barack obama doing what was called the coffee cup salute which was an awkward mistake. but did it deserve as much coverage as it got on cable news? >> no. look, every one of these guys gets off the copper when a dog or a cup in their hand once in their presidency. and they walk out and all of a sudden there's marines saluting them.

something out of the individual, and i think that should happen all the time. but what politico did here and what rachel bey did was conduct an interview and publish an interview that should have never been put forward because it just wasn't news worthy. it was kind of like interviewing monica lewinski and not asking about her affair with the president. lois lerner had three lawyers in the room with her. and the most we got out was basically that she rescued stray dogs. it was a terrible interview. >> well, leslileslie, but was is worthy that we found out, even from her self-interested point of view what her life has been like, the fact that she and her husband spent over $100,000 in legal fees, despite her gaping role at the center of the role? >> we all know in the media that if you interview somebody with a big name or certainly when their

attorneys are flanking their side, there is an arrangement that is made, which is you will knot ask this. if you plead the fifth in d.c. before members of congress, you're not going to have the big reveal with politico or anybody else. there are things that i didn't know about her. not that we're saying, oh, this is a kinder, gentler softer, but i think for many people that may not have been aware why she did what she said she did, why they r she maintains that and quite frankly, other facts into lois lerner. it's also a name that would get people to read this. i think they did the right thing in doing that. you get a big name like that, you do what you can. you know you're not going to be able to go certain places. >> rick. >> look, i don't think we found out anything, leslie. what did she find out other than she is broke and she rescues stray dogs. the heart of why she took the

fifth is not answered here. if there was some sort of interesting news, then i would say go ahead and publish it. but this was so sympathetic to a woman who took the fifth. and in washington, here is the problem for me. it's washington, d.c. media thinking that taking the fifth about going after republicans with the irs is just kind of, you know, not really something that you should investigate. you look at "the washington post" and others, they've known that this was a targeted going after conservatives and yet the investigation par has completely been a nonstory. >> in fairness, sorry to interrupt leslie, we're a little short on tooem time, what her colleagues thought of her, she could be difficult to deal with and laid out what her defense might be. i want to move now to a website called our bad media, which has posted many allegations of plagiarism and barred language against cnn host from areed

zakaria. given his high profile, why do you think this story has gotten such little coverage? >> isis would be one reasoi also think quite frankly, although sadly, americans are a bit desensitized by this. i think we hear about plagiarism all the time. this is the second allegation i found more troubling than others about fareed. quite frankly, it's not bleeding, so it's not leading. >> rick. >> i don't think so. i think this is all about fareed. he's like the rock star of the d.c. media. people love him. they think he's an intellect. if it was any other person, then they would absolutely go after this story. but because eat at cnn and

because he's invited to all the right parties, it's just hands off. it's clear -- this is the way the d.c. media works. >> well, actually, he's in new york, but i guess you could say the d.c. ala carte of d.c. media. i want to mention that jeff zucker says he has complete confidence in zakaria. a source close to the cnn program tells me that of the questionable scripts from the cnn program, not his outside writing, that these were written by producers and later approved by faree ed zakaria. he did apologize a couple of years ago for which a piece that was similar to others in the new yorker. coming up, fred francis on whether the media are swallowing propaganda by running that is shock and awe footage of the air raid against isis.

do you make of the conflicting messages about the strategy of the war coming from the pentagon and you used to covert river and the white house. >> there is no question after talking to four reporters the last 48 hours you have come bind 95 years of experience covering d.o.d. and the white house has an iron grip on what the pentagon is saying and a grip on what reporters are reporting, what access they have. i am not saying they are lying at all. we tell our clients to tell the truth. all the time. >> but you troubled by it. >> because they are not telling the whole truth. example, pentagon says, we are not targeting isis leadership. the c.i.a. is targeting sis leadership with drones. they are saying, we are not targeting with our aircraft. why can't the american people know that?

war hysteria having to do with a beginner "new homeland security alert." a couple of days later i saw a headline "united states on alert." that is the not the same as color-coated updating of the terror threats. has there been too much hysteria? or drama? >> yes. there has been. this is what happens when there is a dearth of news and reporters do not have free access and are able to report to the american people. specific place plames. then it dies. >> you would like journalists, experienced military journalists to be on some of the war ships and talk to the pilots. do you have any expectation that will happen? >> no. not at all. the white house loses its iron fist control on the emergency and that is the emergency?

some pundits have ripped that ad or weird or offensive. do they have a point? >> i think it is a little sexy to see a woman gushing about barack obama and talking about he's disappointed her. it's a strange way to introduce these issues to women voters. but it does show conservatives are going after those women. >> obviously these midterms some want them to be made about barack obama. >> this ads gets a lot of attention. that is what campaign ads have to do. you want to get on shows like this, talk about it. they get a lot of free media. i think it was an unusual ad, but it's like a columnist. you want to provoke some outrage. i think to lisa's point, they have to go after minorities and single women. republicans are hurting in those areas. >> it's not a news flash that the coverage of the air strikes against isis and syria dominated the news this week. which party does that help?

>> it's hard right now. i believe it's going to be a wash for the midterm elections for republicans and democrats. we do see quite a bit of a rally effect for president obama right now. his poll numbers have gone up a little bit. is that because of the heavy coverage? i mean, other than the -- >> i do think so. but i think it's a product of the washington consensus that's gotten behind president obama. you see house republicans in particular being quite a bit more friendly to him because of they ever their resolution to fight isis, as well. >> this is the first time in some years that president obama has gotten somewhat positive press con coverage on foreign policy? >> yes, i think so. he got some bad coverage in august because he had a bad august saying we don't have a strategy on isis. but the news was dominated on him this week. >> his speech i thought this week was much better than his address to the nation. but i do think this issue overall helps republicans. they like talking about this issue. democrats like talking about minimum wage and others issues. those have been crowded out. >> crowded out by the heavy

media spotlight? >> yes, exactly. >> so to the extent that it's been crowded out, what about, for instance, obamacare. >> we're going to see this midterm. i think it's likely to help republicans in some ways, but certainly it's not the issue right now we're looking at national security. >> so all of the traders and media geniuses who some months ago said this is going to be the top issue in the poll, were they steering people wrong? >> they were wrong, yes. they were wrong. they didn't realize how long the midterm cycle happens. we could see new issues come out prior to october. it's likely to be national security. you never know what's going to happen. >> and beyond obamacare, what about the economy? still the issue that voters say they care about. the president moved this week to restrict companies like burger king, which is a big call from avoiding taxes to moving other countries. i would say it got about two minutes of coverage.

>> that's right. as far as obamacare, if it's out of the flus, that's a good thing for democrats. republican governors, they're expanding medicaid. they're embracing obamacare. so that is a good thing for this white house. >> but how many coverage is that getting in the scheme of things? >> not much. overall, this white house, if we're not talking about obamacare, that's a good thing, i think, for democrats. >> but if we're not talking about the economy, if the media aren't focused on the economy, that is not such a good thing? >> yes. and the problem with the white house is the economy has gotten better. but the polls show that people don't think it's gotten better. that's a huge problem and a boom for republicans. >> who won the media week in terms of the coverage. >> i think it was democrats this week. president obama delivered several speeches at the u.n. that helped boost his party. eric holder's resignation means that the news is in their court this week. that's typically good for democrats. >> despite all the criticism on the right from holder's tenure? >> yes. because all of that is basically baked in at this point.
