across the country, the cost of renting a home is on rise. according to a new study, nearly 25% of the people who rent say coming up with enough money to pay their bills every month is, quote, very difficult, and that a sudden emergency will just break the bank. let's bring in brenda buttner, senior business correspondent. always a pleasure. >> same here. >> so is it that more homeowners -- is there more stability in their jobs, more equity in their homes? >> that's a very good point. it's hard to know cause and effect. homeowners tend to make more than $50,000.
12:53 pm
renters tend to make less. renters also have more credit card debt. they have more medical bills because chances are they don't have benefits. it's harder for them to get by. plus, as you mentioned, rent is on the rise. it was up 5.5% last year. now, that places it as 40% of the average income. you should never go above 30%. so that's very difficult. also, the other thing is that it's not like the young college graduate who's eating cup of noodles renting now. the average age of a renter is 41 and they have dependents. the picture of our housing market truly is changing in this country. >> i have a theory, but you tell me. you're expert. why is it rent is going up? i figure because you have a bigger market of renters out there so the folks who are owning these properties can charge more because you have fewer rental properties available.
