the campaign crunch is on and late word on this sunday of a possible big shift in iowa. it could favor the gop and hint at their chances of retaking the senate. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell has been locked in a tense battle with allison lundergren grimes. she's been wading through some hot water after having trouble answering the question of whether she voted for president obama, as you may know, even the president has acknowledged that
4:01 pm
members of his own party may have to distance themselves from him and his failing policies if they want to win. the latest information as key races into the homestretch. chief white house correspondent ed henry is live for us in philadelphia. where president obama is on the campaign trail tonight, and john roberts is in new orleans covering a race that could well end up in a runoff, leaving the nation waiting to call which party will leave the senate. campaign carl, as we like to call him, is in kentucky where as i mentioned the most powerful republican in the senate, minority leader mitch mcconnell is locked in a close race, carl? >> hi, harris, we're actually here in lebanon, kentucky at an allis allison lundergren grimes, she's going to have to pull out one
4:02 pm
heck of a come from behind in the next 48 hours, the attack ads have been filling the airwaves, but the most recent polls show that mcconnell is pulling ahead. grimes counters by saying that mitch mcconnell has been part of the republican opposition and thus responsible for the gridlock in washington. but with the polls showing that mcconnell is up to about a 6 1/2 point lead. and in some cases in the maris poll has been up as many as nine points now he's going positive and talking about what kind of a majority leader he would be in senate. even this is all an example of mitch mcconnell trying to soften his image, he thinks he's going to win and the republicans are going to pick up the six seats
4:03 pm
necessary. >> when you talk about kind of on a national level why there is so much confidence given that there's so many close races. >> so many of these races, eight to ten really within the margin of error, but it depens on where you are in the margin of error, and in in case, republicans have a lot of trends going. first of all, iowa, iowa in the heartland, a state that is a swing state traditionally. critically important in presidential politics and the eyes of the nation often upon it. and now joni ernst who has a 6 point lead, that is a very significant increase and in the case of ernst, she's a republican state senator, she's perhaps one of the big republican stars of this race, famous by her viral hog castration ad, it looks like
4:04 pm
that state too is going to go red, and it's one of the three states that are the democratic fire walls, states they had identified as much wins, including north carolina and colorado. in north carolina, democrat kay hagan has a really tough race on her hands, against the house speaker in north carolina. this race has never been more than a for point gap between the two of them in the real clear politics average. and like here in kentucky, over $100 million in attack ads have been blistering the air waves. the last -- mark udall, the democratic incumbent senator argue that republicans have caused a war on women with their social policy and has its backfired on them. and cory gardner is challenging him, that would burn down the republican fire wall. >> we don't call you campaign carl for no reason. thank you very much, we appreciate it. let's move on now, president obama in a rare appearance and
4:05 pm
now a live event he is attending we expect to hear him speak at any moment, this is the democrat running for pennsylvania governor. it's the president's second stop of today. he was in connecticut earlier and in michigan last night. all three states considered solidly democrat blue. former republican ---president obama and his policies are on the ballot in every state on tuesday. >> the president himself said he's not on the ballot, but his policies are, that includes hesitancy and weakness abroad, which has led to a certain degree to the rise of isis, out also includes the violation of the most fundamental promise of obama care to let people keep their doctor and their insurance if they wanted to keep it. it's a policy of basic amnesty for those who come to the count country illegally. >> ed henry is joining uh-oh-ed,
4:06 pm
this final push from the president, but let's be honest, he really has not gotten many invites. >> he has not, certainly not from senate democrats, he thinks he's too toxic, they want him far away from the battle of control from the senate, as carl just ran through all of their races. the president is getting very active in the gubernatorial races, in pennsylvania, you've got the democrat tom wolf, he wants to turn out the african-american vote this. crowd largely african-american, get the president to turn out the base vote, and out here, the president has been talking up a lot about how he wants to keep his vision moving forward, that's why democrats need to be elected, but republicans today on the sunday talk shows, were talking about how a new kind of change, different from the change the president talked about in 2008. listen. >> hope is what put a plan on the moon, hope is what defeated
4:07 pm
fascism, hope is what america's all about. hope in better days, hope in building up the middle class, hope in handing down something better to our kids. that's why you have to vote. >> even he admitted that his policies will be on the ballot even though he isn't. it's such a referendum on him, that the democratic candidate won't even admit that she voted for him for presidency. >> reporter: back at the white house, he's meeting with federal reserve chairman janet yellen to talk up the economy, the last thing that these candidates want is the president out here in the final hours. instead he'll be back at the white house. >> we have learn seen other democrats back away from him. recently, he was in maryland where the democrat there for governor was up 11 points, also you might argue, pretty safe place for him to be. people waked out on that
4:08 pm
presidential event. walked out and the polls -- but the president had just visited, any talk about how he's been received where you are? >> he's been received well by the people who were waiting out in line, i will tell you, it was pretty cold and windy out here, you have to be a motivated voter to have to come and wait for hours outside in the cold. behind me, you're only seeing about 30% or 40% of the basketball -- on the other side of me is a black curtain, covering up the other half of the arena, the reason why they did that is they can't fill those other seats. what they did was they want to show you the smaller part of the arena, there's still some empty seats up there, they have filled up in the last half hour, but a half hour ago, there were still some empty seats. if they had opened the other side of the arena, all those seats would be empty. that's a lot different than 2008 and 2012, where they had huge
4:09 pm
crowds. president obama's approval rating taking a new tumble. just 44% of americans approve of the president. that's down from 49% in january. and from 6 0% at the start of the second term. the fox news political insiders are here. head to our face book page and twitter and hash tag fox report. i'm going to sit down now. former republican congressman for new york, a former pollster for president jimmy carter and fox news contributor and pollster for president bill clinton and fox news contributor as well. less than two days out, i know we'll have some predictions for you coming up later in the program. but first i want to talk about where we are, with the president on this live event. if they pull back that black curtain, there will be empty seats. >> the bottom line, i use that expression because we're coming
4:10 pm
down to the wire is that the president is a drag on the ticket virtually everywhere. this is an election where people are mads at the democrats, mad at the president, but as your correspondent suggested, a movement to the republicans, but, and the but is more important, it's not an election that's been closed by any means, there's still a lot of dissatisfaction, neither party has delivered a satisfactory message zblvmts ha message. >> have you ever seen a president have this sort of toxici toxicity. >> there were very few key races where republicans wanted george bush. it's highly toxic now for the president. partly because, let's understand, the national situation is very bad. you have people whose numbers are down, even below the ones we show. we have seen all of the questions about the country
4:11 pm
going the wrong direction. two have seen his handling on a number of different issues, ebo ebola, foreign policy. and essentially this is not the election the voter s wanted, these aren't the candidates they wanted. s the the conventional politics, the conventional wisdom that you only have democrats and rains who must choose this, even if it chokes you, and the fact is that voters everywhere feel that the country is in decline, that their children will not be better off and that the american dream is fading and no candidate will talk about that. >> they lack a real choice that compels them to vote and to feel affirmative about their vote. >> we have a phenomenon, you mentioned 2006, when everything that's happening now happened in
4:12 pm
reverse, unpopular president, george w. bush, republicans lose the house and the senate. this time, though, what's happened is when one party has gone down, the other party does not go up, they both go down, we somewhere every in america had this before, which opens what doug just said, this sort of move towards independence, third party candidates, a desire to say, to hell with both of them. >> to whom does that benefit? >> it depends on each race, we're going to talk about kansas, which is the laboratory of can someone from outside the system who rejected both being a republican and being a democrat, can he, in this case defeat a good guy who's -- >> we're talking about greg orman, he has kind of a misstep today and has had to apologize. we'll talk more about that. i want to bring up "the washington post" poll that asked likely voters their preference to lead congress. this is a "wall street journal"
4:13 pm
poll, republicans just with a little bit of an edge, pat, what's your thought here? >> a week ago, it was 11 points, this away, they have not had a positive message. >> the panel will be back and you can chime in and tune in at the same time. it will come down to which party can get most people to actually

4:18 pm
tuesday in the face of new polls that suggest that she would probably lose badly if this goes to a runoff. on saturday she brought out the democratic hammer, hillary rodham clinton, who got a lot of people energized, told them to go out and vote on tuesday. and landrieu said that racism in louisiana is one of the big reasons that president obama is so unpopular here and that sexism in louisiana maybe a reason that she has been struggling in the polls. >> african-americans have had a difficult time in the south, not the only region, but most certainly here and in other places, women have had a difficult time showing the leaders that we are, we read the statement, i don't think anyone would actually disagree with it, that was honest with themselves. >> reporter: landrieu says she has received a lot of criticism about her comments the other day, but she doesn't care about the criticism, she says if i
4:19 pm
cared about criticism, i wouldn't be in politics. >> it wasn't just sexist remarks, she was taking about sexism, racism. bill cassidy, what is he saying? he's the main republican candidate, he believes that her comments were insulting to voters in louisiana, he said that the real reason that the president is unpopular here is not because of his race, but because of his politics, politics which dr. cassidy says hurt a lot of low income people. >> when we stick up for those low income people, she alleges she are sexist and racist. that is wrong, she besmirches the people she claims to represent. >> reporter: that was a reference to the controversy of a while ago that mayor landrieu actually doesn't live in louisiana, she lives in washington, d.c. and republicans continue to pursue that one. >> i know some of the political action committee commercials in that area have pointed to that

hesitancy abroad. >> we need more consensus, more strength to deal with serious problems that deal with more security. >> putting this in perspective, the president's foreign policy approval numbers are in the mid 30s, compared to the last two election cycles, it is a precipitous drop. however when asked about what is the most important issue facing the country, 43% say the economy, foreign policy is fourth on the list. there's been speculation president obama might change his isis strategy after the midterm elections as reports from the battlefield continue to show the current u.s. and allied strikeses far from a knockout punch able to stop the atrocities that continue. and now the latest information on ebola in america. 42 people in ohio being monitored for ebola have been given a clean bill of health.th

i'm harris faulkner, if you are just joining us, we are nearing the end of what's been a dramatic and very expensive campaign. when all is said and done, about $4 billion will be spent on all the congressional races. boy, what you could do with that money. the most ever for any midterm election year, that's according to the certain for election politics. the most expensive, the north carolina senate race, where both political candidates somewhere spent $100 million collectively, and with all that big cash comes some bold predictions about
4:32 pm
which party will walk away with control. what do rnc candidates say ahead of tuesday's election. >> rnc chair says he thinks the numbers of those favor republicans and so does a push by the party to gain minority groups and women, approximate pointing to races in kentucky and arkansas where she says the gop is ahead with women, and that's not all. >> the problem-if you look at colorado, cory gardner is tied with mark udall. we're whipping them in arkansas, we're at a dead even early vote right now in iowa. >> he also says he will be disappointed if republicans do not take control of the senate following these midterm

elections. >> what kind of counter argument are democrats making. >> when it comes to a ground game, debby wasserman schultz says the democrat who lives in the white house, president obama will drive voters to vote democratic because of the way that she says the way he listed the country out of economic ruin. >> i would stack up our surrogates, we have got president obama, vice president biden, secretary clinton, president clinton, and they've got rand paul, chris christie and ted cruz. the advances that we have are superior to the ones republicans have, the most important thing that voters will be asking themselves is who has my back, and voters across the board will consistently say democrats have my back. >> debbie wasserman schultz says that democrats will retain control of the senate. >> we mentioned the $4 billion,
4:34 pm
money well spent, the fox news political insiders are back, join the conversation on facebook. and on twitter @harrisfaulkner. former congressman from new york, pat goodell, and fox news contributor, and former pollster for president bill clinton and fox news contribute for as well. so big none, and people have to be scratched their heads, $4 billion. we have an ocean of under employment in this country, that's a lot of money. >> right, it's a lot of money and the question you have to ask is has it spoken directly to the concerns of the american people which as your question suggests, which is about employment, jobs and the economy. frankly it's been mostly attack ads, the race of the two parties have not improved through this election, there's a greater independent trend and a greater
4:35 pm
trend to reject both parties. >> i had asked which political party does a better job motivating people to get out the vote. and she says president obama and democrats are doing a better job at motivating people to get out the vote. for republicans, she says. >> i was going to say exactly that, i think that's where the passion differential in this election this week is more people are ticked off at the president than are ticked off at the republicans. so i think more anti-obama people are going to vote. >> can i say something about the money? >> sure. >> $4 billion, the amount of money they're spending just on negative ads, the marginal effect of what is, i think governor scott is spending $1,000 a minute this weekend. >> an he's losing by 10 points. >> i just want to say something for the voters, you know what most voters think? that money comes at a price, that money will come to elect
4:36 pm
people who will be responsible to respond to that money. and it is one of the issues that should have been in this election. these people are not getting $100 million for nothing, either they will follow a party line or do whatever they do for their supporters. it just helps stir voters up. >> we watch these media reports over this money, harris, and i think there's a mistake. money is huge. of course. in politics, but there's something bigger which is the message that you use the money to sell. now, you have the right message, you can sell it with less money than if you just blow a lot of money on negative stuff. no one out here at the moment has the courage to say, i'm going to go positive, i'm going to tell you what i'm going to do for you with a -- >> that doesn't win. >> it does win, but no one wants to try, the guy in kansas -- >> greg orman. let's talk about that for a
4:37 pm
minute because that popped into the headlines this week, but not for a good reason. >> he's tied i believe in most polls precisely because he has talked and pat has said it on your show, he's talked optimistically about what could happen in america versus how the political system has rottened out everything in america. it's the two parties that have made us -- >> and orman made a mistake, attacking someone who was a venerable hero. >> greg orman made some comments about former senator bob dole. >> he didn't talk about bob dole, he talked about the caravan. the republicans said he attacked bob dole. >> he contacted him and apologized apparently. >> because it was reported that way. you had a caravan of all of these leaders trying to prop up
4:38 pm
a 78-year-old senator, it looked embarrassing that they were running them out, because what john just said is important, he has run a different paradime campaign. there are many people on this network who don't get what's going on. he's attacked both parties, he's talked about the big issues in our country, loss of our children, and nobody in the country is doing that, he has gone from 10% in june, in one of the most conservative states in this country. >> i mean pat roberts has had to call in some big names. >> he's called everybody in. >> represents basically the establishment and the republicans, but there is some criticism that greg orman has said that i don't know which way i'll vote, i'll have to see who's in power. >> even vote with the majority party, they keep saying i want a different kind of senate, no one paying attention to that because all of our cynical media, all of washington pundit, all they know is someone is cynical, they have
4:39 pm
to play the game their way. >> we may have a couple of runoffs in states like georgia and louisiana, because libertarian and independent republicans are getting such a big vote, really a protest against the major parties, indeed, really one of the unstated stories of this election is how people are really moving away from the major parties wang tnotwithstan the money that's been spent. >> i'm reading orman's comments, i have the utmost respect for senator dole, i have been talking to senator dole about the representation we need in washington. six weeks ago nobody even knew his name outside of the senate and now people are talking about him this choice to the election. david wolferton tweets me, the democrats may only lose five seats but still control the senate. >> if that happens it is the biggest victory for the
4:40 pm
democrats and the biggest defeat for the republicans in our lifetime. if the republicans do not win the senate, which the three of us think they will win, but let's just say something happens and they don't win it this time. they didn't win it in 2000, they didn't win it in 2012. if they don't win it, there will be serious -- >> if they lose the senate, they are the weak party, they won't even exist in another election cycle. they will be done. let me just make that point. they will be done. >> i heard that. here is the largest issue to me, let's assume as i believe and i think the rest of our group believes that they do win. >> okay. >> i don't think there's a mandate, harris, for anything, they haven't really articulated a positive inclusive pro growth message, it's not really a vote for republicans, it's a vote against the democrats. >> i want to talk about something that's come into so
4:41 pm
many senate races across the country and that is the subject of race. you saw down in louisiana, mary landrieu, kind of stepping in some hot water there, that she said, well, if you're not voting for me, if you don't vote for president obama, race played a role, i mean she's a woman running, she's been in office, but she says, well, then you're sexist if you don't vote for her, john? >> i think it's very difficult to talk about race, without being accused of being a racist. so i'm going to be very careful. both parties try to get blocks of voters to vote for them. the democrats have had a monopoly for 40 plus years on the african-american vote. the thing you just showed the president in philadelphia, by the reporters admission was to jack up the tturnout on tuesday in the african-american community. fine, that's politics. the shame of it is, under this president, african-americans have declined economically,
4:42 pm
unemployment, income per capita, all that, wouldn't it be better for them if both parties and maybe an independent party were there as an alternative for them to get something out of the system that works for them. >> i want to pop this up, it's tavis smiley of cbs, saying allison lundergren grimes. let's watch. >> you have double that inside the african-american kmufblt, tripled in some sectors, there's a highway into poverty, where with barely a sidewalk out. if you're hispanic, you can't -- election day first responders, they send out the sos, we need you to come save us once again, i think that's disingenuo disingenuous, i think it's disrespectful, it's demeaning. >> he said jesus was turned away
