in u.s. history. >> the national spotlight shining brightly on the senate brace in louisiana. it took weeks to declare a winner. john roberts is here to explain it all. >> going into election day the polls suggested it will take a long time for us to know the final outcome in louisiana. when i say long time it could take a month. the polls suggested that mary landrieu would win the so-called bill cassie and another owe poen meant rob maness. it would not avoid the runoff in december the 6th. in the runoff it looks like cassidy has the edge. landrieu is trying to get a win distancing herself supporting the keystone pipeline oil and gas drilling both issues in

louisiana. cassidy says landrieu votes overwhelmingly with the president and harry reid says it will never come to the senate floor. david purdue according to the polls stretched out a lead over michelle nunn and not enough to avoid a runoff. if it doesn't it wouldn't be until january the 6 #th. perdue and nunn will keep going despite her disagreement with the president on some issues she would simply be a rubber stamp for the obama administration. >> now to colorado right now polls show republican corey gardener slightly ahead of mark ue dall. it is still a big tossup there. >> we are going to win this race by getting out the vote.

it will be a sweet win. >> mark ue dall is relying heavy on the prowess and relentless hammering of the opponents. >> gardener's history supporting harsh anti abortion law even a bill to make abortion a felony. >> it has been such a campaign trying to do this war on women theme it seem to have run its course. >> gardener a rising star in the republican party whose surprise entry into the case made it the most tightest and expensive of the nation. >> colorado is the majority maker it is a way to make a footnote in history. >> not only has money poured in p around the country for both sides but colorado has been a seemingly endless parade of political heavy weights. >> that's why corey gardener needs to be elected to the united states senate. >> learn all of these ads trying to convince you that mark udall

reelection. the gop picked greg abbott. he is wendy davis enjoyed early buzz but it has all fizzled now. republicans and democrats krit siding her for launching political attack ads in the sunshine state that's florida. florida's governor rick scott and former republican governor now democrat charlie crist are locked in a tight race. it has been very bitter and personal at times. they are in a dead heat. this is certainly too close to call. >> this is a tied state a purple state. it is the nation's most important swing state. it is that way again this year. >> then we go to wisconsin where republican governor scott walker is in a very close race challenger mary burke. walker carries a small lead in the polls. this year it could end with the greatest number of incumbent governors losing. it is a sign americans are fed

up with the people in office now as one recent of courses news poll shows american people are very anti incumbent and want to kick them all out. >> voters deciding on everything from legal reweed to bears toda. minimum wage a measure in south dakota would increase it to 8.50 an hour. in alaska it would go up $2 over two years to 9.75. arkansas and nebraska have similar measures. dc asking voters to realize marijuana. florida medical marijuana. challenges to abortion. voters decide if the constitution should protect the rights of the unborn. in tennessee a measure would make it easier to pass restrictions. voters decide whether to define a fetus under the criminal code.

ore man 44, roberts 43. republicans need to stick up six seats to gain control of the senate. if they do the senate ma anotherity leader mitch mcconnell will be the senate majority leader replacing harry reid. this race has been tight all along. the latest polls show mcconnell with a nine-point lead over his challenger grimes. right now the balance in looks like this 53 democrats 45 republicans two independents. if republicans want to take over they need to pick up six seats. it is possible neither party will have control when the new gavels in. if neither candidate in georgia today gets 50 percent that particular runoff isn't until january 6th.

ainsley? >> thank you, doug. it might have taken a month before we have the final outcome in the senate race in louisiana. incumbent democratic senator mary landrieu will likely win today. bill cassidy and another bob manis. she p didn't get enough of a vote to avoid a runoff. in a runoff cassidy has the edge. she has been campaigning going door to door in the neighborhood where he grew up. >> one last push to meet voters get out the vote. we are having town halls and also knocking on dares. >> brand drew was also there >> so far the race has been one of the most hotly contended in the country as republican

congressman faces off against mark udall. he is leading udall 44-43 in a poll. but they are calling it a toss-up those close tonight at 7:00 p.m. mountain time. 9:00 p.m. eastern. >> in georgia both sides are preparing for a runoff between purdue and democrat michelle nunn. we are tracking those numbers. >> this morning the candidates are campaigning right on down to the wire. p purdue links her to half a dozen times before the candidate's debate in the election. >> his policies are on the ballot and in georgia the name of those policies where michelle nunn. >> you clearly are enamored of that line. let me remind you that if you

they are casting votes for governor today. more than 30 of the races are coming down to the wire. some experts predicting incumbents may be in trouble. kelly wright with a look at the gubernatorial races we are following. >> while many will be closely watching the senate races we must not over look the all important gubernatorial races as well. these are significant because they could be a harbinger of what to expect in the 2016 presidential campaign. there are 36 gubernatorial races of that we could see an historic number of incumbent governors. half are at that close to call rate now. here is why. if republicans win they can use it as a strategy for winning the white house. if democrats lose a governor's seat it could create obstacles for democratic hopefuls like hillary clinton. some key states texas where

radio oo c >> candidates are not the only thing on the ballots. voters in key states also will be deciding on tax laws. ashley webster is here to breakdown those numbers. hey, ashley. >> good morning, ainsley. one of those so-called millionaire taxes is on the ballot in illinois. that would impose a sur tax on over $3 million.

the money raised would be slated for education. democrats and the teacher's union critics say illinois already has the second highest property tax burden in the country. millionaire's tax could force more business owners to leave the state taking jobs with them. that's what happened when a similar tax was approved in new jersey and maryland. meantime voters across the country will be asked to support or reject a variety of tax based ballot initiatives. in georgia voters will decide an income tax rate cap at 6 percent. in louisiana a ballot measure calls for additional tax to help pay for police and firemen. voters in massachusetts being asked whether or not to eliminate the gas tax indexes program. in washington state voters will decide whether to tax marijuana.

gandry. is it his own fault? >> in many respects, yes. he has had a number of missteps and mismanaged a number of crises that has contributed to this sense that he's incompetent. of course no senate democrat wants to be tied to that brand. but in some respects, no. we have seen sort of unprecedented gridlock in congress and a republican party that has said its main goal in congress is to prevent obama from passing his agenda. so a lot of the inact ivity that he's expressing frustration is a little bit out of his hands. >> should the democrats have stood by his side and asked him to come and campaign? >> of course hindsight is 20/20 but i've heard from operatives that maybe democrats should have been out there standing by his side and talking about his accomplishments rather than running away from him

because it hasn't work. we've seen democrat incumbents that we thought were safe -- north carolina and new hampshire come to mind -- down to the wire. it seems like that strategy of running away hasn't worked and it might have been wiser to stand by him and defend hum. >> i want to ask you about this election. many are saying it is more than a midterm. is there a referendum on obama? let's listen last night. a former speech writer for george w. bush was on the kelly files talking about this. >> he himself said his policies are on the ballot. if the american people reject those policies and he doubles down on them, that is a pathway to becoming a lame duck in the first few months of your final few years. >> alexander, what are your thoughts? >> that is what we're seeing. president obama hasn't helped by making comments like that. i think the american people are frustrated with the way the economy is moving, when president obama tells him
