tv Sunday Housecall FOX News November 23, 2014 9:30am-10:01am PST
9:30 am
hello. i'm eric shawn. time now for "sunday housecall." >> and i'm arthel neville. joining us is dr. marc siegel, professor of medicine also author of the inner pulse, unlocking the secret code of sickness and health. >> and dr. david samadi is with us, as always. chief of robotic surgery. >> and expert of wellness, no sickness. >> okay. what we're going to do today is begin with a warning about potentially deadly tropical
9:31 am
diseases reaching our shores. they're spreading through mosquitos and other insects. they pose an even greater threat to the u.s. than ebola. dr. siegel, we start with you. >> arthel, the first problem here and i found this out as i was reading about this yesterday. the problem is local insects are picking up these diseases. that's what i need people out there to know. starting with a big problem in south america and goes by the kissing bug. it carries this parasite. it comes to your face at night and kisses you and bites you and puts this stuff -- >> it's called the kissing bug? they have it up here? >> they have it down there, but now it's becoming rampant in the southwest and southeast. the bug is now there so it's
9:32 am
only a matter of time before the kissing bugs in our states pick it up. people bring it in from latin america, south america, 8 million people have it around the world, we're seeing close to a million people in the united states with this. >> you mention in the south. there was a report in new orleans were there was concern for some other disease. how do you -- >> that's the kissing bug. with mosquitos, we're talking about the yellow fever mosquito. that carries dangy fever which has no cure yet. it can cause break bone fever. it can make you very sick. it's one of the number one causes of fatigue in travelers i find. but again that yellow fever mosquito is making its way to the southeast and southwest.
9:33 am
if it bites somebody, they can then transmit it to somebody else. >> can i put the spray on that can maybe stop them from getting to me in the first place? >> it's funny, i don't know if it's me or just the way they -- they all sound -- the name of the diseases sound like some spicy jamaican food. these are all -- because we're talking about ebola, ebola is slowing down. at least we don't hear much about it, even though it's still on going in west africa. these are mosquito bites. a lot of the caribbeans are having these mosquitos around the stagnant water. there's not much going on except you feel very tired, fever, arthritic joints. in some cases, it can really put burden -- one of the ur roll
9:34 am
just got this moes quito bite, could barely close his fingers. long-term, it can get into your heart, can get into your digestive and 1% of the time, it can actually kill people. there's really no cure. there are some cures, but it's not approved by fda because of the sited effects. so stay away from moes ksquitos. >> the report is the u.s. >> the travelers are the actual conduits. they go there, get the mosquito bite. they come back. now the mosquitos in this country can get that and kind of like a vector give it to other people. >> how do we stop it? >> when you're there, wearing long-sleeved shirts, spray that you spoke about, staying away
9:35 am
from stagnant water. those countries are also using a lot of chemicals. >> we got west nile. can they do the same thing with these? >> the number one of all of these problems, over a hundred million people, there's a vaccine in the works. there's a treatment for it, it's an anti-parasit ik treatment, but it's only available outside the u.s. >> and the side effects are honewho are remember douse. >> and david mentioned, he was in the dominican republican, there's no treatment. for that, we have to do what david was talking about which is to suppress the mosquito populations and wear long sleeves and get rid of standing water. and hopefully prevent the spread up here. it's like west nile. >> at least you have a few
9:36 am
months before spring. >> just be careful. >> they like me far too much. >> you're too sweet. >> that's right. >> it's your blood type really that attracts the mosquitos, right? >> is it? >> maybe it's the perfume you use. >> there's something about you -- not you particularly. >> all the bugs -- >> the kissing bug -- the yellow fever watch out for that. >> meanwhile, are we fatter than we think? america's obesity epidemic. why they say the situation has gotten worse. the doctors will fill us in how we can lose weight. i have a cold with terrible chest congestion. better take something. theraflu severe cold doesn't treat chest congestion. really? new alka-seltzer plus day powder rushes relief to your worst cold symptoms plus chest congestion.

...copd maintenance treatment... ...that helps open my airways for a full 24 hours. you know, spiriva helps me breathe easier. spiriva handihaler tiotropium bromide inhalation powder does not replace rescue inhalers for sudden symptoms. tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, glaucoma, trouble urinating, or an enlarged prostate. these may worsen with spiriva. discuss all medicines you take, even eye drops. stop taking spiriva and seek immediate medical help if your breathing suddenly worsens, your throat or tongue swells,... you can get hives, vision changes or eye pain, or problems passing urine. other side effects include dry mouth and constipation. nothing can reverse copd. spiriva helps me breathe better. sfx: blowing sound. does breathing with copd... ...weigh you down? don't wait ask your doctor about spiriva handihaler.
9:40 am
and back now with "sunday housecall." there's shocking new information about the obesity crisis in our country. a new study revealing that the situation is much worse than people previously thought. >> not good news. we missed it by 60 million people. the reason why the new study shows a lot worse was because people overestimated their height. so the weights were much lower. 49 states in america are 30% more obese than what we thought. the big message is, and i've always talked about obesity, think of it as a spectrum of disease that affects your entire system. it's all the hormones that comes from that. it can really cause a lot of inflammation and cancer. the affect of fat around the liver is that it can really
9:41 am
close all those veins and increase your bad cholesterol. get rid of the good cholesterol. effect on the kidney is that you don't get rid of the salt anymore. if you have high blood pressure, you have the cholesterol, all of that leads to heart disease and stroke. that's why we want to get rid of obesity in this country. without taking care of obesity, you're going to have diabetes. you have insulin resistance. they all go hand in hand. >> if it's that simple that if you're overweight to the point of obesity, which i kind of don't know when you're obese, why are we having trouble as a society to lose weight? >> that's the billion dar question. this actually occurred because the centers for disease control previously was asking people how much do you weigh, and they didn't get the height right. it's a function of your height
9:42 am
and your weight for that height. now we're finally getting accurate figures. over 30% in every state practically is oh piece and two-thirds are overweight. it leads to diabetes and high blood pressure. it leads to all of these weight bearing problems. >> yes. >> back pain is one of the biggest problems in the united states. what do you do about it? i like the idea of exercise and i've said that a million times. morning exercise, 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise. running, if you can do it. walking. increasing the water that you drink. david has convinced me coffee in the morning is very good or green tea. >> if you have a full screen, this is actually the summary of everything we've learned. this is going to be on my website.
9:43 am
activities exactly what marc was talking about, three times a week, half an hour each time. you owe yourself an hour and a half. don't skip breakfast. you put some food in your system, you jump start the metabolism. two to four cups of coffee increase your metabolism. spend money on your food. our food chain system is contaminated. early sleep, fiber, three servings. >> like what? >> celery, apple, orange, while you're working. just grab that apple and eat it. green tea is all antioxidants. seven cups of water. and go for organic. so much pesticide is in our food. if people follow this simple formula, you're going to lose weight. >> if you cut out bread. >> get rid of carb and sugar.
9:44 am
>> we're going to talk about that next week. >> and soda. >> i was going to say fruit and vegetables. there was a study in new york last year. where literally if they were giving out prescriptions for fruit and vegetable, if they got people to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables they ate and grains, that substitutes for some of the other things we were just talking about, like bread, like cakes. eat more fruit and vegetables. >> why are we having problem? a lot of it is compliance. it's hard. it's difficult. this is simple. this is not so hard. this is what everybody can follow. people fall off the band wagon because of compliance and it's also expensive to lose weight. >> it's about habits. if you get into a habit of exercising every day. if i tell people seven, they're going to do four. if i tell people three, they're
9:45 am
going to do one or none. >> do you think that just like some of the insurance companies are covering some of the weight loss -- do you think it will get to a point where the insurance companies will cover a nutritionist for patients? >> it will get to a point where they have to probably cover this. they just give you what i just gave you. >> i'm going to go to your facebook page. >> it's all there. what is a nutritionist going to give you? this is it. it's simple and easy and i think you're going to lose weight. this is the time of year where you start eating a lot. get rid of some of the carb and sugar. >> bread alone. >> i want to keep talking about this, but we have to move on. the death of a reality tv star highlighting the fight against one of the deadliest forms of cancer for women. we're going to look at the long battle with ovarian cancer and
9:46 am
talk about possible new treatments for this very terrible disease. could protect you from cancer? what if one push up could prevent heart disease? one. wishful thinking, right? but there is one step you can take to help prevent another serious disease- pneumococcal pneumonia. one dose of the prevnar 13 ® vaccine can help protect you ... from pneumococcal pneumonia, an illness that can cause coughing, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and may even put you in the hospital. prevnar 13 is used in adults 50 and older to help prevent infections from 13 strains of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia. you should not receive prevnar 13 if you've had a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine or its ingredients. if you have a weakened immune system, you may have a lower response to the vaccine. common side effects were pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site. limited arm movement, fatigue, head ache muscle or joint pain, less appetite, chills, or rash. even if you've already been vaccinated with another pneumonia vaccine, prevnar 13 ® may help provide additional protection.

quote
9:49 am
she passed away last week after a very long battle with ovarian dancer. she was only 34 years old. she rose to fame on mtv's real world road rules challenge. she started chronicaling her battle with the disease in a blog. along the way, became an inspiration for thousands of women in the same situation. 34 years, so young. talk about how aggressive
9:50 am
ovarian cancer is. >> first of all, i want to talk about her. i knew her personally. she was all fight of cancer of . she was fooigting this for almost a decade and she had it again in 2012 and underwent several rounds of chemo. some of our best treatments for o'varn cancer. we're starting to think it's in the tubes rather than the ovary to start with. we're looking at predictions for it and studying inhibiters that cause the tumor to grow. that's coming now. very exciting. but for her, i think the key word was courage. she wouldn't give up. i found many cases of people who defied the odds. i want to ask david about this
9:51 am
because david is a dancer expert. i want to know what you think of the role of courage? >> i think in losing such a beautiful lady, it's unfortunate and there's no question that the power of mind plays a huge role. a lot of times when you really give up mentally, then the fight is over. doesn't matter what kind of chemo or surgery you're going to have. she fought for about a decade and it's unfortunate we lost her. that's the sad part of dealing with cancer. this is a very difficult disease. 21,000 women diagnosed. 14,000 die as a result of this despite everything we have. this is a silent killer. by the time it's diagnosed, it's advanced stage. >> what are the symptoms. >> the ovaries are around the bladder. this is an important point. if you're a woman having just
9:52 am
sudden frequency of urination, it could be just not a urinary tract infection. it could be pushing on the bladder. all of a sudden you have bowel changes. we don't have a real diagnostic tool. a lot of people say i went for my pap smear and i should be fine. pelvic exam, ultrasound and cat scan can diagnose this. of course, surgery is the first line of treatment if it's contained followed by chemotherapy. >> i want to add two points to the points. one is weight changes can be related to this. changes in weight. the thing is that you want to do the tests early if there's a family history.
9:53 am
these things run in families, not just the broco gene. these genetic abnormalities run in families and we're figuring out closely which genes it is. if you have a family history, you might want to screen early. blood tests aren't there yet. you could get a cat scan or ultrasound early but even then we may not be able to diagnose it early enough. >> i think the biggest message is if you see symptoms, signs and symptoms that doesn't make sense to you, don't ignore it. it can lead to something much bigger. if it turns out to be a infection we'll take care of this. sometimes the cancer can expand and get around the stomach. so if you get full really fast, these are some of the signs and symptoms. there's a lot of clinical trials outside u.s. that we don't have here and hoping that these will come.
9:54 am
unfortunately for this -- all the work that she's done i think it's going to save more lives. >> she has a website called medgift.com. you can give money to this website. www.medgift.com. she was also an ambassador of stand up to cancer. people in the media and out in hollywood that are fighting cancer by standing up to it. >> that's a big deal. >> our hats off to her and her family, of course. thanksgiving is just around the corner. for some of us it's easy to get carried away and indulge in all the great food. what if you want to enjoy yourself and still stayy? the doctors will have tips on that coming up.
9:55 am

i took nyquil but i'm still stuffed up. nyquil cold and flu liquid gels don't unstuff your nose. really? alka-seltzer plus night rushes relief to eight symptoms of a full blown cold including your stuffy nose. (breath of relief) oh, what a relief it is. thanks. anytime. . back now on our segment should i worry when we talk about everything that worries us. one viewer wrote i love thanksgiving but end up eating too much. what should i do. i'll tell you what i'm going to do. i'm going to stuff my face and go back for more turkey and i'm going to sneak an extra pecan pie. >> well you can afford it. >> i'm going to have the fried turkey and the dressing and the gum bow and oall of it but the trick is the amount that you eat. it's the portion control. you have to have control.
9:59 am
if you're thinking about -- tell me if i'm wrong. jump in. >> once you hit monday morning you're going to be -- >> working out. >> working out and burning those calories. i think replacing these fatty foods with healthy stuff instead of pies -- >> ooh, it's thank giving. >> i don't need to give you a list. this is the time of the year that it's like fun, family time and i also want to thank all of my patients who have trust in me. all of you guys, it was a great year and we're not going to cry. >> we're going to start cry. >> i think it's okay to enjoy yourself and portion control is my message to a lot of people out there. >> mark. >> i got a couple of tips. instead of basting that turkey, use olive oil and i love baked apples instead of an apple pie. bake it with a little liquor and nuts. last point, the most important, turkey plus wine equals sleepy. don't drive. get a designated driver if
10:00 am
you're going to have wine. >> very good. that does it for us. >> thank you for watching. we're here every sunday on sunday house call on the fox news channel. essentially he's gotten in the job of counterfeiting immigration papers. >> it's not only illegal for the president to take executive action. it's common. >> some words today from lawmakers from both sides of the aisle as congress prepares to counter president obama's executive action that allows millions of illegal imgrants to stay in the country. meanwhile states are vowing to sue the president. plus the fight to save thousands of refugees forced out of their homes. bitter cold moving into refugee camps filled wit
