1:30 pm
the show is over. i hope you've enjoyed it and are learning to be more of a healthy you. see you next time. hello. time now for sunday house call. >> joining us is dr. marc siegel, also author of the inner pulse, unlocking the secret code and sickness, of secness and health. sorry, dr. marc. >> and dr. david samasda. >> brother' going to begin with a warning about a deadly
1:31 pm
tropical disease reaching our shores. they're spreading through mosquitoes and some other insects. they pose an even greater threat to the u.s. than ebola. we start but, dr. siegel. tell us how this is happening and perhaps where in particular. >> the first problem here, and i found this as i was reading this yesterday. the problem is, local insects are picking up these diseases. that's what i need people out there to know. starting with shagas disease. it's the kissing bug. and the kissing bug literally comes to your face at night and kisses you and bites you and puts this stuff -- >> it's called the kissing bug? >> it's called the kissing bug. they have it down there, but now it's becoming rampant in the southeast and southwest. that's what i'm worried about. the vector for this is now there. so it's now only a matter of
1:32 pm
time before the kissing bug in our states pick it up. with the border camps there's that issue too. but people bring it in from latin america. south america. but we're seeing close to a million people in the united states with this. >> and you mentioned the south. i believe there was a report in new orleans where mosquitoes were coming in. there was concern for some kind of other disease coming in. what do you do, do the regular spray? >> that's the kissing bug. >> he loves the kissing bug. >> we're talking about the yellow fever mosquito. that carries dengue fever which has over 100 million cases in the world right now. and dengue fever has no cure yet. we have a vaccine in the works, but it can cause something called break bone fever where you get a lot of muscle aches, it can make you very sick. it's one of the number one cases of fatigue in travelers. but that yellow fever mosquito is making its way to the southeast and southwest. so it can literally, if the
1:33 pm
yellow fever mosquito bites somebody and has dengue they can infect someone else. >> can i put the spray on? >> you can see how emotional he is about this kissing bug. it's funny. i don't know if it's just me. the name of these sound like some spicy food. because we're talking about ebola, ebola is slowing down, at least we don't hear much about it even though i think it's still ongoing in africa. these are mosquito bites. a lot of no, smosquitoes are ar the stagnant water. acutely, short term there's not much going on except that you feel very tired. malai malaise, arthritic joints.
1:34 pm
it could be devastating. long term, probably with some of these chikungunya it can get into your heart, your digestive and one person at a time, it can actually kill people. the problem is there's really no cure. there are some cures, but it's not, unfortunately, approved by the fda because of the side effects. so what do you do? stay away from mosquitoes. >> the report wasn't those countries. the report was the u.s. >> they go get the bites. the mosquitos in this country can get it. and look at it like the vector, give it to other people. >> how do we stop it. >> i think when you're there, wearing long sleeved shirts. staying away from any kind of standing water where mosquitoes
1:35 pm
are. and those countries are using a lot of chemicals to get rid of mosquitoes. >> you got west nile. can they do the same thing with these? >> how to stop it, dengue fever, which is the number one of all of these problems, brothwe're tg about 100 million people. with chagas disease, there's a treatment only available outside the u.s. you have to go through the centers for disease control. and for chikungunya which has been erupting in the caribbean. as he mentioned he was just in the dominican republic. it's erupting down there. there's no treatment. and we're starting to see in local mosquitoes up here. we have to suppress the moefx population and get rid of them
1:36 pm
and suppress chikungunya. >> just a few months before spring. >> mosquitoes like me. >> you're too sweet. >> it's your blood type, really, that attracts mosquitoes, isn't it in. >> also it's the perfume you use. >> the kissing bug -- >> all that chikungunya, the yellow fever mosquitoes. watch out for that. meanwhile, are we fatter than we think? the obesity epidemic, what a shocking new study reveals about it. the doctors will fill us in on how we can lose weight. mhere's our new trainer! ensure active heart health. heart: i'm going to focus on the heart. i minimize my sodium and fat... gotta keep it lean and mean.
1:37 pm
pear: uh-oh. heart: i maximize good stuff like my potassium... and phytosterols, which may help lower cholesterol. major: i'm feeling energized already. avo: new delicious ensure active heart health supports your heart and body, so you stay active and strong. ensure. take life in.
1:38 pm
worse and worse.rthritis, i had intense joint pain that got then my rheumatologist prescribed enbrel. i'm phil mickelson, pro golfer.
1:39 pm
enbrel helps relieve pain and stop joint damage. i've been on the course and on the road. enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. serious, sometimes fatal events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, nervous system and blood disorders, and allergic reactions have occurred. before starting enbrel, your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and discuss whether you've been to a region where certain fungal infections are common. you should not start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. tell your doctor if you're prone to infections, have cuts or sores, have had hepatitis b, have been treated for heart failure, or if you have symptoms such as persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, or paleness. enbrel helped relieve my joint pain. but the best part of every journey... dad!!! ...is coming home. ask if enbrel, the number one biologic medicine prescribed by rheumatologists, can help you stop joint damage.
1:40 pm
and back now on sunday house call. there's shocking new information about the obesity crisis in our country, the new study revealing that the situation is much worse than people previously thought. dr. samadi, how bad is it and how do we lose weight. >> the reason why the new study now it shows a lot worse. and we are much fatter than we thought was because people overestimated their height. so the weights were much lower. now we're understanding that 49 states in america are 30% more obese than what we thought. and, you know, what the big message is, and i've always talked about obesity is think of it as a spectrum of disease that affects your entire system. obesity is not just fat around your stomach. it really is all the hormones that comes from that, the leptins, the effect of fat
1:41 pm
around the liver. it request increase your bad cholesterol, get rid of the good che cholesterol. if you have high blood pressure, you have the cholesterol. all of that leads to heart di t disease and stroke. that's why we want to get rid of obesity. and that's why trillions of dollars goes into this. without taking care of obesity, you're going to have diabetes. they all go hand in hand. >> but dr. marc, i'm sorry, but if it's that simple that if you're overweight to the point of obesity. i don't know when you're obese, how much weight is too much. why are we having trouble as a society to lose weight? >> that's the trillion dollar question. the centers for disease control was asking people how much do you weigh, and they didn't get the height right. and the amount of obesity or how overweight you are is a function
1:42 pm
of your height. the bigger you are, the taller you are the more weight you can carry. now we're getting accurate figures. over 30% in every state practically is obese and two-thirds are overweight. to david's point, it leads to diabetes, high blood pressure and weight bearing problems. knee operations, back pain. it's due to people being overweight. what do you do about it? i like the idea of exercise. 30 minutes of cardio. walking, going on a treadmill, going on a bike. increasing the water that you drink. david has convinced me coffee in the morning or green tea. >> this is actually the summary of everything that we've learned in the last four years. i've put it for everyone together. if you go to facebook dr. david
1:43 pm
samadi. activity, three times a week, half an hour each time. you owe yourself an hour and a half. don't skip breakfast because that's when you break that whole fast overnight and put some food in the system. you jump start the metabolism. increase your metabolism. spend money on your food. our food chain system is contaminated. we're putting all this cheap food over there. early sleep, fiber. >> fiber, three servings, like what? >> celery, apple, orange, while you're working, grab that apple and eat it. make sure you get your seven hours of sleep. green tea, seven cups of water that we have spoken for, and go for organic because so much pesticide is in our food. and i promise you, if people follow this simple formula, you're going to lose weight especially this time of year. >> cut out white bread. have brown rice.
1:44 pm
one glass of wine. >> we're going to talk about the carbohydrate next week. >> and the shcut out the sugary. >> if they were giving out prescriptions for fruits and vegetables and got people to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables and grains, that substitutes things, like all of the carbohydrates that cause you to gain weight. eat more fruit and vegetables. >> answer to your question is, why are we having problem? a lot of it is compliance. it's hard, it's difficult. it's not full of promises. this is what everybody can follow. but people fall off the bandwagon because of compliance, and it's expensive to lose weight. >> i was going to mention that. >> it's about habits. if you get into a habit of exercising every day. that's why i say seven instead of three. if i tell people seven, they're
1:45 pm
going to do three. if i tell people three they're going to do one or none. >> some insurance is covering things like the sleeve and this and that. do you think insurance will cover a nutritionist to tell you what to eat. >> the nutritionist gives you what i just gave you. go to dr. david samadi facebook. it's all there. and i think you're going to lose weight. this is the time of year where you start eating a lot. but eric's point is well taken. get rid of some of the carb and sugar. >> bread alone. >> absolutely. i agree. >> i want to keep talking about this. but we have to move on. very good. the death of a reality tv star highlighting the fight of one of the deadliest forms of cancer for women. coming up we're going to look at diem brown's battle with ovarian

1:52 pm
having sudden frequency of urination urgency. changes. we don't have a real diagnostic tool. a lot of people say i went for my pap smear and i should be fine. pelvic exam, ultrasound and cat scan can diagnose this. of course, surgery is the first line of treatment if it's contained followed by chemotherapy. >> i want to add two points to the points. one is weight changes can be related to this. changes in weight. the thing is that you want to do the tests early if there's a family history.
1:53 pm
these things run in families, not just the broco gene. these genetic abnormalities run in families and we're figuring out closely which genes it is. if you have a family history, you might want to screen early. blood tests aren't there yet. you could get a cat scan or ultrasound early but even then we may not be able to diagnose it early enough. >> i think the biggest message is if you see symptoms, signs and symptoms that doesn't make sense to you, don't ignore it. it can lead to something much bigger. if it turns out to be a infection we'll take care of this. sometimes the cancer can expand and get around the stomach. so if you get full really fast, these are some of the signs and symptoms. there's a lot of clinical trials outside u.s. that we don't have here and hoping that these will come.
1:54 pm
unfortunately for this -- all the work that she's done i think it's going to save more lives. >> she has a website called medgift.com. you can give money to this website. www.medgift.com. she was also an ambassador of stand up to cancer. people in the media and out in hollywood that are fighting cancer by standing up to it. >> that's a big deal. >> our hats off to her and her family, of course. thanksgiving is just around the corner. for some of us it's easy to get carried away and indulge in all the great food. what if you want to enjoy yourself and still stay healthy? the doctors will have tips on the doctors will have tips on that coming up. it says here that a won's sex drive increases at the age of 80. helps reduce the risk of heart disse. keep hrt-healthy. live long. eat the 100% goodness of post shreddedheat.
