tv Sunday Housecall FOX News November 30, 2014 9:30am-10:01am PST
9:30 am
i'm arthel neville, time now for "sunday housecall." >> and i'm eric shawn. joins us as always is dr. david samadi. >> and dr. marc siegel, professor of medicine at nyu. also author of the inner pulse, unk locking the secret code of sickness and health. >> we're going to start today with something that's really kind of unspoken but happens to be one of the leaders causes of cancers of men between 51 and 35
9:31 am
years old. it is testicular cancer. hear about many different canners, but you don't hear a lot about testicular cancer. >> men start to grow their mustache in remembering prostate cancer and testicular cancer. average anyone is 33 and almost one every 24 hours, someone dies from this disease. 8,000 men diagnosed with testicular cancer every year. about 380 die from this. when you catch it early. that's why self exam once a month is extremely important. >> how do you do that? >> you basically feel the test call. you look for lumps or bumps or changes in the size or feeling of this. if you see that, you need to see a urologist. we get an ultrasound and you can
9:32 am
find this. it so it's a very curable disease. >> is it silent? is there pain besides any bumps you can feel, maybe similar to women? >> exactly right, eric. there may be no symptoms. you can have pain or swelling and swollen testy call. if you go to an internist and you're a young man, and he or she doesn't do this, get another internist. very curable. very treatable. you want your internist to be feeling for a swolle test typic. what does increase your risk is being white, that's one thing. and big one is undecescendeunde.
9:33 am
when people come to me for this examination, they feel the bump on top. they always say is that normal, that's where they look. well, that's normal, actually. >> one of the reasons why you would ask, why is it on the outside, it's outside the body and ovaries are inside? do you know the answer? >> no. >> it's all about global warming. the reason for that is they would never survive inside the abdomen. it's four degrees warmer. now, their role is to secret free testosterone. they get stored over there. from there, they go through this tunnel. so when people get vast sect my, when you basically clip that tube. the other thing if you have
9:34 am
family history or on the other side, you've had cancer, you have higher risk and should see a urologist on a regular basis. >> you say it's sigh leapt. so i want to give a shoutout to an important foundation. it's sean kimer lirks, ng foundation. he was a sports caster who died young because of this. they actually do a lot of good work in this area. >> how young you can -- you are? 15? >> 35 is the big age group. you know who also brought a lot of attention to this was lance armstrong. that brought a lot of attention to it. treatments can go anywhere from radiation to often times chemotherapy will cure it.
9:35 am
>> sean was healthy. suddenly -- >> you're right. eric -- and if you don't catch it early, it can become a huge mass in the abdomen and then you can't even do surgery. i see that you're very passionate about this and you mentioned his name almost three times. we have posted, especially month of november, i want everyone to go to dr. david samadi facebook. we already have put in prostate cancer 911 for people to know about guidelines, getting tested and also self-examination. the question that you asked is, how do you do the exam. we're going to have diagrams about kids, young teenagers to really know how to examine themselves. that can save someone's life. >> and always big on getting women involved, to make sure we encourage the guys.
9:36 am
>> let's -- i want to make -- arthel plus a lot of other people and everyone at fox news has been very supportive of this #samadichallenge. i know you've been extremely instrumental. that is powerful, when you catch the disease early, somebody could be here. >> that's the key. again, your doctor, whoever it is. here's the thing, men don't always go to doctors. women are going to gynecologists regularly. if it's the first time i'm seeing them, they're saying, what are you doing this for, i came in here for a cough. this is why. i need to find it early. it even can be put into remission or cured if you miss it with chemotherapy. you want to get this one early. >> great with screen sfwlg very important. >> well, for years we have been
9:37 am
told to worry about how much saturated fats we consume. but could carbohydrates be just as dangerous? the shocking results from a brand new study and what you need to know to stay healthy. ghl arthritis lasts 8 hours but aleve can last 12 hours. and aleve is proven to work better on pain than tylenol arthritis. so why am i still thinking about this? how are ya? good. aleve. proven better on pain. with contour detect technology that flexes in 8 directions for the perfect shave at any angle. go to philips.com/new for savings on shavers and trimmers. innovation and you. philips norelco.
9:40 am
an eye opening new study now showing a carbohydrates are actually more dangerous to your health than saturated fats. >> well, this is a small study. they used 16 people, but they studded them very ex-sten sievely. they found when they ate saturated fats, the level in the blood didn't go up that much. but when they ate carbohydrates
9:41 am
that was converted to a fatty acid. carbohydrates cause you more fat than fat. but i am not going to conclude from this that saturated fats are good for you. i don't think either other one is good for you. at kin's is going to be laughing in his grave. neither is great. i want to tell you why. i think the evidence for saturated fats and heart disease may not be what we would like, but they have been correlated with cancer. i agree with this point. if you want to lose weight, cut down on carbohydrates, not fats. you won't make fats in your body. >> exactly. >> white bread, out. donuts, out. >> pa sta. >> we switched to, you know, sh -- >> the wheat pass sta. >> i think the purpose of this
9:42 am
study is to really think about our diet. when they actually stop people from having saturated fat, the fatty acid in the blood didn't change much. this is like what really leads to diabetes and heart disease. when they cut down on carb, it actually went down. when they added carbohydrate, it went up. so there seem to be some correlation with carb. i think moderation is the way to go. i think if you can replace some of these real carbs that we eat and switch them to some of the brown stuff, making sure you don't take a lot of pizza, et cetera. it's a change of the culture and that's not easy to break. >> how about beer? >> you made a great point. whole grains and fruits and vegetables instead of that white
9:43 am
bread, instead of that pasta. the cookies, and cakes that's what's really bad for you. i have to say that a dry red wine -- >> speaking of what you love, how about potato chips? >> that's easy to answer. when you look at your dish, if you see less than three colors, you're in bad shape. you have to see at least seven colors. look at your plate. >> uh-huh. >> if you see less than three colors, steak and mashed potatoes, if you see less than three colors you're in bad shape. if you see seven colors or more, you're doing really great. >> i took a photo -- >> vegetables. >> i took -- you keep talking. i took a photo of one of my meals just to show you the color. i had tomatoes. >> salmon has -- >> simple way, if you cut the
9:44 am
portion and also make sure that your plate is really colorful. try it, eric. >> broccoli, tomatoes. >> that makes you actually put all the salad and tomatoes and peppers, all that stuff to your food. >> be careful of the white pasta and switch to brown. >> and drink two glasses of water before you have dinner because it fills up your stomach. >> and one glass of wine, no beer. >> no beer? >> no beer. >> okay. >> he's changed. he's drinking coffee. >> exercising every morning. >> he listens to what happens on this show. >> very good. could be one of the biggest indicators for women showing exactly how healthy they are. we'll tell you what this new study is. it is our should i worry segment. "sunday housecall" continues for this sunday. i'm angela, and i quit smoking with chantix. people who know me,
9:45 am
they say 'i never thought you would quit.' but chantix helped me do it. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. it gave me the power to overcome the urge to smoke. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. some people had seizures while taking chantix. if you have any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix or history of seizures. don' take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these, stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some can be life-threatening. tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems, or if you develop new or worse symptoms. get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. use caution when driving or operating machinery. common side effects include nausea, trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. i'm a non-smoker, that feels amazing. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.
9:48 am
time now for our "should i worry" segment. we talk about everything that worries us. here's a question from a viewer saying my men straul cycle is not regular, should i worry. i imagine it varies in various women as to why they may have an irregular period. >> and it's usually between 28 to 30 days. but if it's something that's new, then, you know, we want to look into and she should be concerned, not worried. a lot of things acutely can change this. if you lose a lot of weight or gain a lot of weight, a lot of the changes can lead to this. if you're under a lot of stress,
9:49 am
if you don't get sleep. sleep deprivation causes all the ovulation problem. in long term, there could also be mechanical problems. she may be having endometriosis. or if she has some pain, it could be fibroids. getting all the test done is absolutely advisable when you see something like this. a lot of times, it may correct itself by calming down, getting rest, eating healthy. even malnourished women can have this kind of problem. major athletes always exercising, they don't have enough fat, so their estrogen is out of syny. a visit to gynecologist is very healthy. >> very good. >> i think first of all, there's a new app on your fie phone, where you can say, hey, i'm one day late.
9:50 am
you don't worry if you're one day late, if you're two days late. if you miss one period, well, that's probably stress or lack of sleep. those are the big ones. or you're exercising more than you used to. if you miss two, go used to. if you miss two, go see your gynecologist. if you have pain, that's a common symptom of something called endometriosis which over 6 million women have. that's where the lining of the womb starts to show up other places. if you have extra bleeding, you think do i have a polyp, f fibroyd. >> there are a lot of surgical treatments. robotic technology to remove the
9:51 am
fibroid and they do quite well. spotting could be fibroids. but get tested. that's the key. >> sometimes doctors put you on the birth control pill to help you regulate your period. correct? >> depending on what the ideology of this is. you have to look at the whole diagnosis which is a long list. then you are right, if there are hormonabe ablable abl hormonable. >> one treatment for fibroids is that you cut off the blood supply, or take a piece of it out. everybody used to have a hysterectomy. but also robotic techniques. >> that's actually a very good point that you are bringing up. robotic technology is -- we use it for prostate obviously. and it works well. guess what? uterus is in the same area as prostate is in man and in women. so the growth of the myoma.
9:52 am
you remove that extra tissue without any problem. why is this important? because there are usually very young women and they may want to save their uterus. you don't want to do the whole hysterectomy on a 30-year-old woman. that's a big save. >> some women will just take it out. i don't need it anymore. but i am an advocate for keeping all your organs if you can, because it is there for a reason. >> some people feel so strongly about the women, don't take it out. with the prostate, take it out. >> if it is cancerous. >> a lot of people don't know that i still see patients. because they think i am on tv, i don't see patients. if you have prostate cancer problems, you can always call us and i am happy to help you. >> real doctors. you see real people. not just tv doctors. could reducing your risk to diabetes be as simple as having

unlike natural teeth. try new fixodent plus true feel. the smooth formula helps keep dentures in place. it's free of flavors and colorants. for a closer feeling to natural teeth. fixodent. and forget it. ght, so this tylenol arthritis lasts 8 hours but aleve can last 12 hours. and aleve is proven to work better on pain than tylenol arthritis. so why am i still thinking about this? how are ya? good. aleve. proven better on pain.
9:57 am
welcome back to "house call." on this show i've been converted to coffee over the last three or four years because i think there is a lot of positive value to coffee. it is not for everyone. people who have heart disease that maybe don't need the increased heart rate. people with stomach troubles that can't tolerate it. but a big study of 123,000 people last year -- this past year in april found that if you have just a cup or two of coffee a day you decrease your risk by diabetes 11%. three or four cups of coffee a day, which is what david is recommending, it is decreases by one-quarter. 25%. >> what does it do to your body. >> we don't flow. a lot of this is by questionnaire. we don't know if it is a calorie alternative. in other words you're drinking coffee instead of drinking soda which gives you diabetes but we think it revs up the metabolism, that its antioxidants help you, that it decreases insulin
9:58 am
resistance. if your insulin is not working, you get diabetes by definition. looks like coffee actually has a meta bol metabolic effect to decrease your sugar. >> there is a whole art of drinking coffee. if you drink one or two you're not going to get the full effect. they want you to drink six which i think is too much. but somewhere between three to four is when the actual potential. that's when you get the maximum benefit. three to four cups a day. >> not with the sugar -- >> no milk, no sugar. >> black. >> with every cup i always recommend to have -- >> doesn't work if you put milk in? >> i don't want to have -- if you have a little bit, it is okay. but if you have four cups, that's a lot of milk. for every cup of coffee also i want you to have two glasses of water. remember last week that secret formula that we put on facebook became so popular. more and more people are following it. more and more studies are coming
9:59 am
in from u.s. to switzerland, french, that coffee can reduce the risk of diabetes by making your insulin reaccept torsecept sensitive by 25% to 50%. alzheimer, parkinson's and so many other diseases this seems to be working, either because of a lot of antioxidants or what it does to insulin receptor. we want people be careful. obviously if you have reflux, heart disease, if you are pregnant you don't want to be taking so much. but also with cognitive skills. coffee seem to be waking you up. better performance over all. >> or exercise. people exercise more. back to a point about what you add to your coffee. clearly no sugar. but as long as i'm giving david a shout out here, i want to give one to my wife because i think she's right. she uses a little bit of half and half. you mentioned milk. milk's got a lot of sugar in it. half and half has that saturated fat in it. we just talk last week about how saturated fats may not be as bad for you as we thought.
10:00 am
so coffee with a little bit of half and half. no sugar. >> or regular milk. >> watch that sugar content. >> i just go black. >> black is the best. i agree. >> once have you it black, you don't want to have it any other way. officer darren wilson quits the ferguson police force but the move appears to do little to calm those angry over michael brown's death. we're live on the ground in ferguson. also the grand jury may have to decided not to bring charges but a lot of legal avenues do remain open. we'll ask our legal panel what comes next. president obama's third defense secretary, chuck hagel, is out, resigning under pressure from his boss. now the big question -- given the friction between the white house and the pentagon, who will replace him and what will that mean for u.s. military strategy. we'll talk to republican senator. the lame duck congress goes back to work tomorrow. it has one
