death of photo journalist luke summers. the president called the murder of summers, quote, barbaric and offered his condolences to summers' fame and the family of another non-u.s. hostage killed during the rescue operation. the president said the despair and sorrow of these families, quote, are beyond words president obama authorize dollars the raid he said because earlier this week al qaeda and the arabia peninsula released a video saying that summers would be killed within 27 hours if there demands were not met. along those lines chuck hagel said the raid went forward yesterday because, quote: they there were compelling reasons to believe that mr. summers' life was in eminent danger. mr. summers and another hostage murdered by the akap terrorists during the course of the operation. on behalf of the men and women on behalf of the u.s. armed forces i extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to their families and loved ones.

the rescue attempt took place in central yemen and was conducted by u.s. special operation forces in partnership with the government of yemen. somers, as i said was 33 years old and moved to yemen in 2011. he was abducted by al qaeda in the arabian peninsula in 2013. secretary hagel says several al qaeda terrorists who had been holding somers hostage were also killed in the raid. one other note, one of the fbi's most wanted terrorists was killed in pakistan according to pakistan's military. a senior pakistani army officer said al qaeda's chief of global operations was killed in pakistan tribal region. he had been indicted in the u.s. over a plot to bomb new york subway system. the fbi had offered $5 million reward for his capture, but according to pakistan, he is now dead. back to you all in new york. >> thanks a lot, molly. apparently we don't have word about the condition of the u.s. special operators

who conducted this raid. we are assuming they are all okay. we certainly hope they are. >> one report being that mr. summers was wounded in the failed rescue attempt. well. not so failed and then died later on a naval ship. so condolences to the family. and then another important story, this fbi most wanted terrorist criminal being killed in pakistan. an array of experiences with him, with some of the biggest terrorists in the world. for the last 10 or 12 years. and so an incredible get. >> we don't have details how this happened. was he killed by the pakistaniy military. we know that ash carter, the incoming pentagon chief, the head of dod who will be replacing chuck hagel, this will be the first item on his to do list how to respond to isis and al qaeda. >> we will be following that story all morning long and

also this. you hear about this rolling stones story where this freshman claimed that she had been raped, gang raped, beaten and bloodied at fraternity party. it was in rolling stone. and now rolling stone is starting to have to backtrack on this. dana rolling saying this. in the face of new information there now appears to be discrepancies in jackie's account. victim known as jackie. we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. we were trying to be sensitive to the shame and humiliation after people feel after sexual assault now regret not to alleged assaulters to get their account. we apologize to anyone affected by this story. it appears there wasn't any cross fact checking on any of this. there was not even a party after the this fraternity house that night as she claims that one of the people who raped her was a lifeguard. nobody at the fraternity even worked at the aquatics center.

no room matches the description she describes. none of it really makes a lot of sense. >> many are saying it's a hoax. there is no evidence at all as of this morning that this rape took place. she alleged seven men raped her. the details are so graphic that we are not going to characterize them this morning other than to say they are horrifying. it turns out rolling stone decided to ditch their obligation as journalists and becomes a many have in this story advocates. advocates on behalf of a woman whose story to this moment does not add up at all. that did not stop the university from basically punishing the entire greek system at uva. shut down fraternities and sports for who sororities. >> you are a great greater and anchor over a long time. is that the norm. >> the story was absurd. >> an anonymous story about a group of people to not ask the group of people who are

alleged to have committed that act. >> by the third paragraph in this story, i called in one of my editors and said you have read this? this is the most liewfd chris -- so clearly false. impossible to imagine how this got through the editing process if it hadn't been about this subject which is so fraught with politics and emotion, there is no way this would have seen print. >> why would they do that? >> absurd. taking up the role of advocates. advocating on behalf of a position rather than to try to get to the facts of the story. in the process they hurt a lot of people. the frarnt that was accused apparently falsely vandalized. shut down. members are hiding in hotels. it's been crazy. >> fallout is bigger than that doing the opposite of being a advocate. what happens when people cry wolf in serious situations like this is then you don't take the real accounts seriously when women really are victims of sexual assault. >> you don't get to make allegations without proving it in general. it doesn't matter. our justice system is based

yemen. the nuances that i'm getting, guys, and it's been backed up by one other source is that, in fact, somers was still alive when the special force operatives reached him, that he was, in fact, shot, badly injured by al qaeda militants while a raid was ongoing but when the americans reached alive and indications are that he was brought away from that location for medical treatment maybe on a u.s. navy ship off of yemen somewhere in the process he did die. washington has been a little bit more direct. they simply say that he was murdered by al qaeda during the raid. again, one way or another, it's a tragic ending to a failed rescue attempt. it was in remote area of yemen, the raid happened yemen time early in the morning. and we are told 10 militants of al qaeda were also killed in the raid. there are some reports that civilians were killed as well. but the details of this thing still coming, in guys. >> greg, a little bit more. this is information from our green room.

somers was 33 years old. born in briton but apparently had american in wisconsin. it certainly is a tragedy. apparently abducted in december of 2013. are you aware of any other efforts to try to save him previously? >> yeah. certainly there was one other attempt and was confirmed to me two days ago that this earlier special force raid in which some hostages were rescued from al qaeda was the main target of that was somers as well. that happened last week. but i am told that the al qaeda militants got somers out of there and a few other hostages out of that location before the special forces reached there. so for the u.s. tried to save him twice. unfortunately, a tragic end today, guys. >> greg, just to be clear, no u.s. special forces were injured or killed during this. >> no injuries. no casualties. it is confirmed to me, too,

you need to be sensitive. >> seen all these examples in two recent months of police coming into contact with people they believe committed crimes in both cases they did. who died subsequent to that. one here in new york city. the other famously in ferguson, missouri, these are being taken as metaphors by the left for police brutality. they say there is an epidemic where police are targeting people based on their race. jon stewart jumped on the bandwagon recently and brought up yet another case. this one from california. watch. >> these are merely an unending, bizarrely similar series of isolated incidents. >> this is an isolated incident. like the police shooting of time rice in cleveland or donte parker in san bernardino country or dated in pasadena. or or monday bennett in new orleans. >> out of all that glibness and smugness, do the facts really matter? evidently for jon stewart they don't really matter.

meaning three years ago when garth was diagnosed with cancer. now garth wants story has been turned into the book napkin notes. joining us are garth callahan and lovely daughter emma. i'm so happy to have you both. napkin notes and i read a good portion of it very very early this morning, is probably one of the most meaningful books that i have read in many, many years. your story is now that you are fighting cancer again, stage 4 cancer. and that the odds are very difficult stage four cancer, kidney cancer. >> correct. >> tell us how this book came about and what the meaning is for you and your family. >> a few years ago after i was first diagnosed with cancer i discovered emma was saving the notes that i was writing to her. and i took a look at how she was saving them in a little composition book and i thought gosh, this is a really good way to share the notes with other families and maybe inspire parents to write notes to their kids. >> and you wrote about 826

notes that you received, emma over that that time. what do your father's notes mean to you especially in light of the fact that he is fighting so hard to get well again. >> my dad's notes mean everything to me, especially having that connection even when he is not there always have some of the notes. >> let's look at a couple of the notes. >> if you always try to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be. you quoted maya angelou there. what were you saying? >> i really wanted emma to understand that normal is not okay. it's actually better to be exceptional. in anything that you can do. >> and is that what you got out of that? you have read maya angelou before? >> i have. >> absolutely. another note that you wrote, garth. dear emma, success consists of going to failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm. and you quoted winston churchill. you have been in business

and you worked at circuit city and you have been successful in your career. what's important understanding failure. >> if you are always afraid of failure you probably won't try. and if you don't try, you can't succeed. >> and i i think you understand the uniqueness of daughters. i have got two daughters that i love you wrote dear emma. don't be afraid to be yourself. you are awesome. and i'm proud to be your dad. now, when you got that note, s. you remember getting that i do. >> and what did you feel then and what do you feel now in talking about it? >> i mean, every time i read a note, i'm inspired all over again. and i think about my dad and i think about how great is he particularly courageous man as well as a great, great author let's look at one of the final notes particularly interesting and moving to me.

dear emma. sometimes when i need a miracle, i look into your eyes and see that i've already created one. how does that make you feel, emma? >> it makes me feel great knowing that my dad loves me that much and that he finds inspiration in me even though he is the one being inspiring in this. >> he is garth, how can people do this in their own lives? even people that are not suffering and fighting the way that you are fighting and i believe that you're going to win. how can they do this every day? >> i think the easiest thing to remember is that this is not difficult. i'm not trying to climb mount everest or win a gold medal. take a pen and some type of paper or note card and take that commitment once a day for 30 or 45 seconds and write a note to a loved one. >> if you are not able to overcome this cancer and you have overcome it so many times already. what does this book say for

conference right now in afghanistan on the issue. >> and molly hendenberg is live in washington with breaking news and all the details. what can you tell us this morning? >> reporter: peter, tucker, anna, good morning. president obama authorized a rescue attempt inside yemen because there was information leading u.s. authorities to believe that 33-year-old luke somers' life was in "eminent danger" and part of the calculation, the president said, was that al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, a, qap, put out a video threatening to kill somers within 72 hours if demands were not met. the president confirmed somers and another non-american hostage held by aqap were killed. he said "the united states strongly condemns the barbaric murder of luke somers at the hands of al qaeda terrorists during a rescue operation conducted by u.s. forces in yemen, in partnership with the yemeni government. on behalf of the american people

i offer my deepest condolences to luke's family and to his loved once." somers, a photojournalist was kidnapped in september 2013. senior yemeni official says somers was shot by the al qaeda militants but survived the initial raid and was badly injured when u.s. special forces got to him. this official says somers died as he was being transported to another location for medical treatment. a south african aid organization, gift of the givers, says the other hostage who died in the raid was one of their workers. defense secretary chuck hagel says several terrorists were killed in the mission and that the rescue attempt took place in central yemen. one other note this morning one of the fbi's most wanted terrorists was killed in pakistan, according to pakistan's military. senior pakistani army officer says al qaeda's chief of global

hurting the entire military structure, because nobody has confidence in the leadership. you've got to have confidence in the leadership, and the president has to have someone with whom he has such a close relationship that they are almost like just one in their thoughts, their minds, and they meld together so that when the defense secretary speaks, he truly is speaking for the president and vice versa. >> good point. >> preotests continue in new yok city and ferguson. are they racism problem, police problems or family problems? >> the easy thing is to blamt cops. it's heartbreaking to see some of the video. let's try to be very, i think politically incorrect but honest. we have a breakdown within our social structure in america, and it is accelerated since the early '60s when we decided that fatherhood isn't really all that important, and we started paying people to have babies out of

wedlock, and daniel patrick moynihan warned us in 1964 when he was a young lawyer in the labor department that this was going to be an increasing problem, and that's back when unwed births were something like less than 25% of the african-american community. it's now over 50% and overall it's like 40% of the white community and he said if this gets much worse there's going to be a social meltdown. now look what's happened. when you see kids raised in an atmosphere where they don't have both a father and father who are educated and employed and committed to each other in a monogamous marriage you see 75% increase in drug abuse, you see an 80% greater likelihood they won't graduate school than their peers. the statistics are irrefutable. it doesn't mean a kid growing up in a single parent home can't make it. it means the odds are against him in a way that is staggering. >> there's no debate about what you said. social science weighed in quite a bit. the numbers are there.

so given that, why hasn't the president ever, one time in six qulee years not once say you ought to get married before you have kids. >> this president could be a phenomenal role model within the african-american community to say get march rid, stay married, be there for your kids. you know what? i have so many disagreements with barack obama but the one thing he's done a great job, he's a good father. he loves his daughters, he publicly and privately seems to be a good, loving father. god bless him for that. why doesn't he use that powerful, bully pulpit to speak about the importance of fath fatherhood? >> it part from changing the family structure, how do we improve things now, what methods in our society should be saying to people in terms of responding to police, in terms of obeying police. i'm going to get arrested, i may not have done anything but the government is saying i need to come in and be held accountable. what do we say to folks?

>> two sides we need to make sure the police do a thorough investigation, that they air out their laundry and let us see what's out there, and they need to have nothing but transparency when it comes to specifically this case with garner, but on the other side, mothers and fathers need to sit down with their kids and say look, if a policeman stops you, this is not a time to see how many curse words you've learned. this is not a time to see how tough you are. if you want to think the cop is wrong, then there will be a time for that when we have an attorney and we go down to the police station and we file a complaint, but on the street, when he says stop, you stop. if he says show me your hands, you show him your hands and you don't reach for his gun and you don't backtalk him because there will be a time when we'll take that up. >> as a lawyer and a father that is great advice. >> that's a mom and dad thing, peter. i was raised if i got in trouble with any authority, school, police, i was in bigger trouble at home and we don't raise our kids to respect authority and we raise them to rebel against

ordinary citizens. which is true? >> the truth lies in that the police department is the best trained, the most effective, the most professional police department in the country. >> yes. >> no doubt, and their achievements are undeniable, and the comments, the mayor's comments were, in my opinion, inappropriate, and clearly polarizing. you know, he talked about centuries of racism leading to us this particular event. >> right. >> and then as a solution, the administration offers training. you don't train racist cops. >> this is where you're missing it. i watched the garner tape. i thought it upsetting. i didn't like it. i hated it actually but i didn't see it as racist. where does the mayor get the idea, is there proof this was a racial act? i'm missing that. >> to me this was a prescripted narrative waiting for a time and this was the time that the mayor

chose. clearly you can debate what you see on video, you can debate the grand jury decision and there's strong opinions on both sides but clearly there is no indication, no evidence of racism, so we say that we're brought to the situation because of race but then we offer training. training is a good thing, a phenomenal thing. how do you cure race imfrom training. we start off with a premise, then we offer a solution that clearly goes to the problem, can the nypd be better trained? absolutely. will they pen fit from training that helps them to de-escalate situations, absolutely, relate to the community in a better way. in camden county i said the cops need to go to the communities on foot, introduce themselves, find out what's going on in the community, prioritize the

taken a similar strategy as isis in the execution of its hostages. this is a somewhat unusual situation. the initial reporting suggests it was in the course of this rescue mission. nonetheless, it does represent a shift for this terror group. >> apparently this is the second rescue attempt, catherine. there was some questions at least raised during a wow press briefing whether in fact the white house responded quickly enough to the navy s.e.a.l.s question to engage in such a mission? >> i'm glad you raise that, peter. based on my own reporting, one of the complaints that you hear privately from some intelligence and military officials is there is a tendency of the white house to ask for the intelligence to build up further before these rescues attempts are okayed by the white house. this is a very different thing to do, and i'm not trying to minimize the decision making,

because you put a lot of lives at risk when you decide to go in to get an american. but unfortunately there does seem to be a pattern where there's a sense that the bar is being raised too often by the white house and this is creating delays which has frustrated these rescue attempts of the white house, as they have said again today, they sign off on the missions when they feel there is strong intelligence and there's a strong operational plan. just as sort of a final wrap-up point, the one thing that has also been hanging over all of these cases as we head into the next week, is the release of the senate intelligence committee report on the post-9/11 cia interrogation program and what the international ramifications will be when that program is released, specifically the ramifications for these americans hostages who are held overseas.

>> catherine herridge, thank you for the reporting. >> thank you for having me. we want to bring you the latest on the "rolling stone" piece. the magazine came out with a very detailed story, a first-person account from a uva student that said she had been assaulted during a fraternity party. we're not going to characterize them. it shocked people. the university immediately shut down all the fraternities and so errorities and began what it looks like a witch-hunt in retrospect, calling people oat for this brutal rape, et cetera, et cetera. now we are learning that grave question versus arisen about the acrae of that piece. >> and journalistic integrity is being called into question when we learned the fraternity did not even host a party on that night. one of the alleged attackers apparently worked as a lifeguard, but nobody in the fraternity worked at the aquatic

center, and the room this victim described, there's not a room in the fraternity house that match that is description period, so the managing editor of "rolling stone" has been forced to make an apology -- there now appear to be discrepancies in jackie's account and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. we were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation that many feel after the assault and now regret the decision to not contact the -- and what about all the other women, people who will potential victims of sexual assault anywhere? when people cry wolf like it, as it appears, it diminishes the whole thing. >> it trivializes and also hurts a lot of people specifically on that campus. they basically, tucker, shut down as you were saying earlier,

the fraternities. >> and we're hearing a lot about the chilling effect. this is about a very specific set of allegations which turns outs are untrue. i believe this is a hoax, and those allegations hurt a very specific group of people. i know it's unfashionable to say maybe we should feel sorry for college boys, but which college boys are accused of violent sex crimes unfairly, i think it's right to say we apologize, and the school has not apologized, by the way. that fraternity house was vandalized, the kids had to leave campus, and nobody has apologized. they're the victims here. >> and for no one to ask it is people who allegedly perpetrated it, did you do this? did you not do this? and no one to fact check the allegations made by this alleged accuser? >> in this kinds of crime, that's not necessary. someone is accusing of of

embezzlement, but in this specific species of crime, that's considered irrelevant, she made the claim, therefore it's true. that's not the way our justice system works. >> and not the way our journalism sim should be working, either. here's a take earlier on our show. >> there are reports that the author of the article was searching for a rape victim to write about, and so she had a point of view to get across and that there are a lot of rapes on university campuses. i'm not denying that, but her being in love with this story so much stopped her from acting as a journalist. the story never said she alleged anything. the story put this forward as fact leading the reader to believe this had been fact checked and that's an abrogation of duty. >> the third paragraph i said to
