members' desks before they could possibly4, have read the 1,600 page spendapalooza, it was a month that -- -- it certainly doesn't create jobs and secure people this their homes or help them start a business. and conservatives hated it because it was packed with more spending calories than the triple bacon cheeseburger from hard dees, we were told that this was the best we could hope for. maybe it was. but why did the best we could hope for end up getting burped out on the house floor just hours before the deadline to vote? the whining of the speaker was that if the house didn't pass the bill right then, they might not get home before christmas. well, pardon me, but i won't moisten so much as a single klenex if congress has to work

an extra week or two to get their job done. isn't that what they're being paid for? the leadership acts like a bunch of college students who party all semester and then complain about pulling an all fighter the week of finals. well, tough, you guys asked for the job, now for god's sake do it. you weren't sent toj/ring your hands and sa really hard and then give away the last piece of candy just so that you can go home and trim your christmas tree and sip eggnog around the fire. millions of americans don't have jobs, millions more barely have jobs that pay enough to eke out a christmas chicken. and congress and the president wait until the last possible moment to try and pass a budgets that will set the priorities for spending our money and then they congratulate themselves for hurriedly -- so if members of congress have to work christmas to get their jobs done, so be

it. we have people in uniforms serving all over the globe, they're going to miss christmas at home and they aren't being paid near what the president and congress are making. if i shed tears for people working over the holidays, it's going to be for the sailors, soldiers, airmen, marinesy2t÷ a the coast guard personnel that have my sympathy. for the president and the members of congress, how about a bag of switches and a lump of coal. the other big story coming out of washington this week was the senate's scathing report of the cia's bush era enhanced interrogation techniques, it was a report that cost taxpayers $40 million. but for $40 million, you kind of think democrats could at least have pretended to search for the truth. was senator feinstein picked because the cia spied on her e-mails? you can't blame her for that.

but were she and her colleagues trying to take focus away from the hearing when the mit professor was explaining why he was calling americans stupid. or do democrats have a really bad case of amnesia that after 9/11 even democrats were fearful that another major terror attack was imminent and the career from republicans and democrats alike was to do whatever it took to prevent another one. we have highly paid men and women in the intelligence community who risk their lives daily to keep americans safe. they put their lives and those of their family in danger if they're ever found out. they operate under orders from the president and their;ve@ superiors. sure, they're far from perfect, but they deserve our respect. what makes our country different than those who criticize us is that we do investigate our own practices and we question power and we hold people accountable.

will be within the intelligence community? >> i couldn't agree more with what you said just a moment ago. we were at the time this happened, we were on the map,ea we had just suffered a terrorist attack that killed 3,000 of our citizens, mostly civilians, hit major targets in new york and washington, d.c. and we knew very little about al qaeda at that time. we probably knew more about north korea than we did about al qaeda then, and the president then and the congress were unified. we were all united demanding that the cia go on the offensive. we asked brave men and women to go out there and risk their lives to fake the fight to al qaeda. and now what bothers me, is after we do this, and let -- no said the united states will go without another massive terrorist attack for 13 years. no matter thatjp record of success. now we have democrats in the

senate led by senator feinstein who conducted a partisan investigation with no republicans and in fact they're interviewing no witnesses. that's incredible. no witnessesóere interviewed.g this report as you say attacks those men and women, 13 years after the fact. and what they have to do is say it didn't work because they can't quarrel with the reputation of success that our cia agents were able to achieve. >> were you ever accepted by this community because you were very much a part of the discussion of the legality of what was being done. it would be pretty obvious that you would be one of the witnesses called, were you? >> i have conducted investigations, we always do it always bipartisan and we always interview witnesses. i was never called. i would have happily have testified to the committee about my role and the role of others and this committee did it because they wanted to cherry pick through the evidence and build a case.

our country never had to. but it wasn't our choice this was a decision that was thrust upon us by an enemy, a vicious enemy that as you point out are taking american hostages and beheading them on videos for sport. these are the kind of people we're fighting. they launch a surprise attack on civilians. as you said, we didn't know when the next attack was going to happen, so there was a demand information, and information it didn't take years to gather. we needed to get information as quickly as possible. but we knew that using regular law enforcement questioning wasn't going to work, it wasn't working and so unfortunately, we had to ask what can we do to try to get the information quickly when it's of use to our men and women in the cia? so we had to take into account laws that prohibited torture, but we didn't want to torture anyone, but we wanted to ask, what can we do that would come
