9:00 am
we're back here next sunday morning 11:00 and 5:00 eastern for the latest buzz. we begin with a fox news alert on yesterday's cold blooded assassination. a strike at american valus and our nation. the brazen ambush of two new york city police officers executed as they protected the public. officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu were shot in broad daylight as they shot in their patrol car in brooklyn. the controversy over what caused the execution. they're growing. this is "america's news headquarters. i'm arthel neville. >> suspected gang member from baltimore and brinsley ran away after that brazen attack and he
9:01 am
shot himself, killing himself in a nearby subway station. recent comments he posted on social media say the killings were an act of retribution to avenge the deaths of michael brown and eric garner. bri brian has the latest. >> they grieve over the senseless murders of wenjian liu and rafael ramos. this morning at st. patrick's cathedral bill bratton joining cardinal timothy dollen who offered his prayers. >> we mourn with them, we need them, we respect them and we are proud of them and we thank them. >> 28-year-old ismaaiyl brinsleyw walked up to a patrol car and shot both officers in the head. the ambush so fast they most likely did not even see their killer. moments later brinsley sthahot
9:02 am
himself in a subway station. earlier that day he shot and killed his former girlfriend in baltimore. blood stained pants with police messages suggesting this was in revenge for eric garner i'm putting wings on pigs today. they take one of ours, let's take two of theirs. officers turned their backs on the mayor after he visit the families of the fallen officers. this morning eric garner's mother condemning the shooting. >> standing here in sorrow about losing those two police officers. that was definitely not our agenda. we are going in peace. >> the hospital last night hundreds of police officers gathered to salute the ambulances carrying the body of two of their own.
9:03 am
>> well, we apologize for the audio problem we have there. >> i want to go here, eric. you know, many are asking was brinsley acting out after the hatred spewed in some of those anti-police demonstrations. take a listen now at protesters in manhattan during the millions march last saturday calling for the killing of police officers. >> it's hard to hear, but that's what we're told is on the tape there in the audio. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani blamed the pin in part on those protests and what he calls a propaganda against our nation's law enforcement officers who are sworn to protect us. >> we've had four months of propaganda starting with the president and everybody should hate the police. that is completely wrong.
9:04 am
actually, the people who do the most for the black community in america are the police. >> so, will karr is joining us with more from l.a. will just told me he was able to hear the audio and it says, what do we want? saying he heard those protesters say, some of them, at least. >> we certainly heard things like that over the past couple weeks from some protesters. one thing we didn't see last night were any protests against police. police who we protest that we've seen over the past couple of weeks in new york, in ferguson, in los angeles in cities all across the united states. a number of current and former law enforcement members have come out this morning ing lume against police officers in some of those protests saying they should have been handled better. a major impact on police frs os and members of law enforcement across the country.
9:05 am
>> they are no longer going to be proactive, they're going to be reactive. they're not going to hurry to the scene any more and put their lives and pensions on the line because they don't get backing from their government leaders. >> others are calling for an end to all of the violence, asking for communities to step up right now before more blood is shed. >> i was here in the 1970s, we buried so many. i don't want to bury cops. these cops are doing their job. they were in a black neighborhood because the crime is so high, they're working overtime. that's what these heroes were doing. people have to band together. >> as you can imagine, there was a lot of fingerpointing going on this morning. mayor jewgiuliani came out this morning on "fox & friends" and said goes too far to blame mayor de blasio but he should step up and take accountability for some of the protests getting out of control in new york over the past couple of weeks. >> will carr, thank you for that
9:06 am
update. less than 24 hours after the new york officers were murdered, another officer has been gunned down that in florida. it happened in tarpon springs. officers were responding to a noise complaint after the suspect was banging on several doors. well, when police arrived they say the man shot and killed one officer and tried to get away in a car. he was captured by police and now in custody. there is no word, though, if this is connected to any of the other police killings. president obama now saying the u.s. will be reviewing whether to put north korea back on its list of state-sponsors of terrorism. this after pyongyang insists not part of the recent sony cyberact and called fo investigation with the u.s. into finding out who was responsible. chief washington correspondent james rosen is live in washington with the details. hey, james. >> good afternoon. a statement from north korea is national defense commission issued today by the state-run korean news agency vows
9:07 am
pyongyang will strike back if president obama punishes the south on the attack on cyberpictures. the hits just keep on coming. new e-mails from amy paschal continue to surface including two. michael linton told fareed zakaria the studio is considering options for releasing the video digitally or through video on demand, but not thus far a single distributor or e commerce site has stepped up to show the incendiary comedy. >> what you saw is a nation state who engaged in trying to really destroy an american company and then took it to the broader level of using threats of violence in order to get their political will. >> no, i don't think it was an act of war. i think it was an act of cyberva cybervandalism that was very costly, very expensive. we take it very seriously.
9:08 am
we will respond, as i said. >> david, the veteran lawyer of the bush/gore recount who is representing sony in the current case the film will be released by means of distribution, not yet determined. arthel? >> james rosen, thank you so much. we'll remind our viewers much more on the fallout over sony's hack attack and what it could mean for the already strained relations with north korea when we talk to kansas congressman mike pompao a member of the house intelligence committee. >> there's a knee jerk sense on the part of some in the foreign policy establishment that shooting first and thinking about it second projects strength. i disagree with that. i have been consistent in saying that where we can solve problems diplomatically, we should do so. >> president obama denying he has been "rolled" by hardline
9:09 am
dictators in syria, iran, russia and cuba. is he an easy mark? normalizing relations raised questions about whether we gave up too much. we will influence a new generation in cuba, but raul castro vows his communist nation will never change. the former u.s. ambassador to the united nations and a fox news contributor. ambassador, you know, it seems the only prisoners being released in cuba are ours. the detainees from gitmo. we did get one spy back but not one political prisoner has yet been sprung by castro because of this deal. >> right. i wouldn't hold my bruth on this either. the president gave away his attitude in that quote where he talked about people in the foreign policy establishment who want to shoot first. i actually know most of the people in the foreign policy establishment. i don't know anybody who fits that description. so, the president is out there building and then rapidly wiping them away.
9:10 am
his policies on north korea, on ir iran, on russia, on china, i could go on but they're weak and they give the impression that the united states is not paying attention to the rest of the world and busily turning inward. and the consequences for the united states are severe and adverse for a number of years unless we reverse what he's up to. >> this is a way to open up cuba to bring a commerce and bring a democracy and that will succeed. >> that shows his ignorance on how cuba was run. he might be interested in knowing that the united states is the largest exporter of food to cuba already. we supply enormous amounts of medicine and other humanitarian supplies. that cams as a consequence of executive and legislative steps late in the clinton administration designed to do what? to open up cuba and increase the freedoms available to people. it hasn't happened. it's still a repressive society. human rights activists are routinely murdered in cuba.
9:11 am
they are put in prison. and cuba's state controls most of the economy. the enterprises are state owned or to do business, foreign companies need to get licenses. average cubans don't get to see foreign currency and the foreign companies involved there can put in their hard currency and they get cuban pay back. i think it's dilutional to think that these 80-year-old revolutionary brothers having spent their entire lives trying to establish a communist cuba have now said at a time of economic crisis, you know, maybe we'll just give it all up. i think they've shown that they can outnegotiate the president. they know what they want. the president has based his policy on delusion. >> you talk about the fact that it's repressive. let's take a look at some of the numbers. actually pretty shocking. the number of political prisoners have gone up, not down over the past few years. now up to 8,000 and human rights watch, 57,000 people in prison and war camps. what are the chances of them
9:12 am
being freed because of this deal? >> i say close to nothing. you know, the president and his acolyte in the media pretend as though his announcement of this past week was like turning night into day. but the fact is, there is extensive foreign presence in cuba. we had a usiad program there. that's where alan gross was working when he was arrested. you have extensive tourism from europeans and canadians and others and none of that has changed the authoritarian nature of the state. what the president's opening will do will give resources an economic lifeline and political legitimacy that will make it much harder to overturn the government when the two brothers finally. what the cuban people need is a chance to have freedom when they finally have the icons removed from the scene. this policy by the president will do exactly the opposite. >> for now the castros seem to be propped up. always good to see you, thank
9:13 am
you so much. >> thank you, eric. >> arthel? forget the long lines. will it be the extreme winter weather that will get in the way of your last-minute christmas shopping? a full forecast, coming up.

legendary boxer muhammed ali is battling a case of pneumonia today. his illness was caught early and they expect him to have a short hospital stay. the three-time heavy world heavyweight champion has been battling parkinson's disease since the early 198 os. just three years after he retired from the sport. ali recently appeared at a public ceremony, but he did not speak. winter begins. the first official day from winter which means from here on out, the days will start to get longer. but right now take a look, the west coast getting pounded by several storm systems which could mean even more dangerous flash flooding and possibly mudslides. janice to bring us the latest, janice, i guess you don't need to look at the calendar to know it's winter. >> it is winter, that is for sure. much of the country is feeling
9:18 am
it. let's talk about the northwest where we have our latest storm bringing a lot of rain, a lot of wind and up to three feet of snow. so, great news for the skiers. they're enjoying this first day of winter. however, the energy from this storm system is going to give us the energy for the system that is going to bring us perhaps a travel nightmare on christmas eve. so, winter weather advisories posted here where we could get several feet of snow and then watch this as we move into monday and tuesday. we're going to see this low pressure develop across the great lakes and the midwest bringing mainly, we think, a rain event starting off, but then we'll see snow on the back side of this and even the potential for severe weather on wednesday. so, there is your wednesday travel. really, nasty across the upper midwest and all along the east coast and, unfortunately, for parts of the northwest as well. so, of course, we will keep you up to date and i will be briefing santa to make sure everyone has their presents under the christmas tree. eric and arthel. >> i know what janice has broadcast. santa will be here. >> thank you. >> fantastic.

guys! faster internet? i have never been on the internet and i am doing pretty well. does he even work here? don't listen to the naysayer. take the comcast business speed test. get faster speeds or more savings, or we'll give you $150. comcast business. built for business. so the u.s. weighing in next steps against north korea, president obama is reportedly asking china for help in curtailing north korea's cyberattack ability. now, this as the fbi officially blamed pyongyang for the massive hack and threats leading up to the now canceled release of the sony movie "the interview." joining us now to discuss this attack is mike pompeo, a member of the house intelligence
9:23 am
committee. good to see you this morning, sir. >> thank you for having me on the show. >> absolutely. ulier this morning with maria bartaroma. he said china could have stopped them. "new york times" is reporting that the white house requested help from beijing in recent days and the chinese have not responded. however, a senior obama administration official is telling the associated press that the u.s. and china have shared information about the sony attack. but it seems like a lukewarm response from china. so, congressman, i ask you, should the u.s. put the squeeze on china for them to in turn put the pressure on north korea? >> we should put the squeeze on everyone that has the capacity to stop what was a terrorist attack by a nation state. i heard also the president this morning called this a cybervandalism. there's not a joy ride in a car. i remember when the president called al qaeda jb and sortly therefore beheaded four
9:24 am
americans. this is a president who has no capacity to understand these real threats to america. this cyberattack is not the first and won't be the last if america continues to treat these as minor incidents and not the real threat to the american nation state that they are. >> so, let's stay there for a second. why do you think president obama referred to it as cybervandalism and not calling it cyberwar? >> he has consistently led from behind or had a foreign policy of not doing stupid stuff. he doesn't understand that nations around the world respect power, respect nations that will stand up for their own people. we had tens of billions of property stolen over the past years alone from cyberattack. yet when the house of representatives passed a cybersharing bill in april of 2013, the congressman from hollywood and the president of the united states said, no, we don't want to do that.here were the american infrastructure, they were unprepared to help us
9:25 am
pass laws, which would have helped a company like sony be further along in developing their own securities, such that we can keep american property and american people safe. >> i want to circle back to china in a moment, but let's talk about north korea. what immediate direct punishment should the u.s. impose on north korea and kim jung-un? >> well, the president should already have put them back on the terrorist list, designated terrorist state. he should immediately get our folks at nsa prepared and ramped up and ready to execute whatever mission he determines is appropriate given the information that the fbi and the department of homeland security and our nsa develops. all of those things, we have a cybercommand that is designed purposefully to address just exactly the kind of attacks that north korea made and we should, again, make it very difficult and very clear to leadership in pyongya ng that this is
9:26 am
intolerable and it won't happen again. >> sometimes kim jung-un is like a little child and wants some attention. he is a dangerous, but very serious and the consequences could be very serious. so, first of all, congressman, i ask you, will he pay attention because now he's coming up. kim jung-un saying, let's do a joint investigation because you'll see that we weren't responsible. he seems to be emboldened by the fact that we're not actually coming down on him. but, also, the second part is, congressman, back to china. how do they come down on north korea because north korea will keep going as long as they have china's, you know, aid. what do we do to china? >> look, a great question. so, there are many things we can do to each of these places and make no mistake, it's not just china. it's russia and all the folks who have been cooperating with north korea for decades. we need to make clear that we're simply not going to tolerate it. many actions we can take around the world. we just begun to impose sanctions on russia, again.
9:27 am
although, frankly, we're releasing them off our eastern shore. we need a consistent foreign policy that tells folks all across the world. >> that we are serious. congressman, i hate to tell you this, i have to go. and we're back.
