so watch me tonight, fox business, 6:00 p.m. hello, everyone i'm greg, along with kimberly, dana and bob. this is "the five." an ap poll of the u.s. press after their top story of the year, they chose police killings of blacks, not ebola, not isis, not a missing airplane and it's 227 people, the police killings of blacks. i call that bad timing, but it's also the media completing their self-fulfilling premise, this is how it works. you take something awful and claim it reflects an epidemic, when the facts refute this, you

dig the excitement of the antagoni antagonism, then comes the assaults and now murder. such incidents are stories, but the media turned them into an indictment creating an exaggerated narrative that endangered cops. and now that cops are making fewer arrests to protect their own lives, cnn asked if crime could spike. isn't that what you wanted a tinted police? that's what you have. many also wonderered if the k l killings would derail -- before the media, protest is their pal, it allows them to slam law enforcement as a proxy for america itself. fact is police save more american lives every year and the community values their presence. remember when -- when they said that cops don't come to black

neighborhoods, now they do. so dana, you were the one that picked up the story yesterday, is it any surprise that they picked this particular issue? >> i was surprised that they didn't choose torture, which has been their favorite topic for the last eight years, but this story no doubt dominated a lot of our programming, the front pages and even in the middle of isis -- >> right. >> the reconstitution of al qaeda in a more lethal force in syria and now iraq and possibly other places, the recruiting, the beheading, nothing was more important than these stories. in fact i think the big issue here is that a lot of the reporting on -- we wait for a grand jury to finalize. a lot of the reporting turned out to be wrong, initial impressions were wrong. the process went through, the final decision, at least in the ferguson case, came down without an indictment and in addition to that we find out that the hands up don't shoot posititure was n
1:03 am
actually based on fact, it was fabricated. and the media reported that from the beginning, so i'm a little surprised that they didn't go with other things that were equally as good a story, but with the ap editors, they have been targeting the nypd for years, and they get pulitzers for it. >> the ap did that whole thing on the polisurveilling mosques. >> can i agree with their choice and disagree with it at the same time? i agree that it's probably the story of the year, the ferguson -- what took place in ferguson, what took place in new york, no question, we have covered it, we have covered it quite a bit and we'll probably continue to cover the aftermath of the protest that followed those activities. my problem is the way they named it, police killing of blacks,
1:04 am
that's the real outrage here, call it the story of the year, but let's call it what it was, in ferguson, a black teen held up a convenience store and was killed resisting arrest. in new york, a guy should han't have died for a cigarette, but was killed while resisting arrest. it's a real confrontation between the community, black communities and the police. and i have no problem calling it the story of the year. >> basically doing what i just did, calling out the media. >> now the question is what are you guys going to do? are you going to keep dividing us? i heard from so many protesters who appreciated nypd, i heard from nypd officers and leader who is said they saw peaceful protests, respectful protests. what you managed to do is pull-up the few, who do not represent the majority, who are
1:05 am
saying unobjectionable things, the question is will you tell the world about it, because you all are part of it too. >> he didn't mind the media when it came to supporting the protesters, and now he's saying don't do this anymore, do you think that's hypocritical? >> in your monologue, you said it was the left. it's not the left, it's a very small number on the left. having said that, this is not the story of the year. anybody who doesn't believe that isis, with the fact that muslims have joined in a coalition to bomb muslims is a gigantic, historical story and it deserves to be the number one story by far, not even close does anything else come close to it. it's a sad and horrible stories, but there are a lot of sad and horrible stories. isis is a huge story. >> i'm going to agree with bob about isis being the biggest story and it's going to continue
1:06 am
into 2015, i think this story had so much traction because this is how we close the year out. also this is no surprise, because they have been stirring to the pot with the eric holder justice department, demonizing police officers, targeting police officers in their investigation, and this went even farther back into the trayvon martin case, so this kind of eventually outcome i think was inevery fastbavitabli the focus, before these guys, they were the heroes, they were the ones that saved everybody with 9/11 and now u we have turned the white hats into the bad guys. which is sad because we can't get by a day without their assistance and their bravery. >> i'm always surprised by liberal politicians who are then surprised by media coverage when there's fall reporters on the ground. the reporters are not making up -- that we know of.
1:07 am
this is not the rolling stone. but reporters are getting their information from their sources. the mayor wrapped in bubble wrap, basically the "new york times," they loved the story when he said that his son should be worried about dealing with the cops because he might come into some sort of trouble, he loved it when he was controlling the narrative. and they didn't pick ed up any clues in the last eight months? >> this u was atrib quite -- >> i'm talking got quotes within the police force that, the mayor was referencing. >> speaking of losers and the minority of losers in these protesters, there were a few i guess that showed up at the police memorial, i'll get a comment from you after we roll this horrible tape. >> i just want to say within the last couple of minutes, for the
1:08 am
first time today we have seen protesters come out here and start yelling at groups of police who are mourning their fellow police officers. they're yelling at police officers who are standing here silently, just looking at the fd posters. >> isn't that amazing? >> christmas is this week, these overs a s a officer are going to -- probably the best of those two officers probably stemmed from the protest. he's the one who linked the deaths to the protests. you would think they would wait until these awesome two young men with families are laid to rest before they start with this again. >> it's their right to do it, as repulsive as they are.
1:09 am
al sharpton is going to resume protests. it's the toxicity of sharpton, that wherever he goes, trouble follows. how does the mayor, what pictures does al sharpton have of de blasio. >> i don't know, i definitely don't want to see them, though, they're pretty bad. but why is it that he's allowed -- the problem is, you u're allowing people like al sharpton to control race relations in the united states of america and what a terrible job he has done stirring this up. and yet he turns press conferences into thinking about himself and that he's not safe and people are after him. doesn't he have any conscience whatsoever? or any class or sophistication? i think he just wants to profit off of deaths in this country because that's what he's doing. >> it seems to me that when a few idiots like this stand up
1:10 am
and it is assumed that this represents us, it does not. we should be the first ones denouncing these idiots for doing what they're doing. stand up and speak out, this is not who we are, yet we're being plastered with this. and for good reason, i would understand, if i had -- it is not who we are and you're not speaking out and i urge you to stand up and be counted. >> can de blasio save himself by, a, divorcing himself from sharpton completely and when there are protests this weekend, if any of them tries to take a bridge or stop traffic, they are dealt with as criminals, isn't that the only way -- because if de blasio looks weak, it's over for him. >> he's at a fork in the road. he can make a decision, because he allowed the closing of the bridges and the blockings of the

tunnels for a few nights. it's bad that people feel convenienced but people want to -- i think he will make a decision to not aloia type of illegal behavior to happen again. if he does not, that will, i think, so that he is a lame duck mayor and calls for his resignation will ensue. >> in this city, the police are told not to wear their uniforms outside. >> and patrol in twos, like in the '7 0s, which is the last time that the -- the media was being divisive and a bunch of new york reporters kind of went with it. that's shocking to me. however, you know who's divisi e divisive? de blasio is divisive.
1:12 am
when eric garner goes down and his family says it was not about race. the mayor of the city said i turned to my young son, who's a young man of color and said you have to be careful how you treat your city police officers or you could pd find yourself in troub trouble, that's dif vieive. >> people ask, is this a relationship that's reparable? how can you fix this? this guy's got to go. he has no clue and he has -- >> i was just going to say on that point, in terms of lucky to get in, he did not have strong competition when he ran for mayor, and also there was very low voter turnout and he won by something like 34% of the vote. most people sort of didn't pay attention to the race. >> without the support of the

1:19 am
if people are coming to arrest you, you should comply with the police. >> go through the process, take it through the courts, don't resist arrest, you could hurt yourself, you could hurt other people, it's a bad situation, comply with the rule of law. is that such a crazy idea? >> no, and i think that's what al was pointing out there, i'm still baffled why people are still holding al sharpton up as their go-to guy for race. there was some debate, i can't remember who it was, "washington post" or whoever it was, that al sharpton was getting it's -- when comcast were making their buyout, al was threatening that deal, and by pulling away from the threats to that deal, he was somehow u given or offered this show, they alluded to it. that's not real, don't hang that

on me. why did sony do it. who died and said al sharpton is our new go-to guy. that doesn't help race relations, race relations have dramatically gotten worse because of president obama. if >> if he has a show on msnbc, does he have a picture of the msnbc president with a pigmy horse? every day you know this guy's on. he's stupid, he's just stupid, and there seems to be a lower bar for character, i'm sorry, bob, if you're a liberal, if we look at black leaders like sharpton, if you look at farrakhan, if you look at jesse jackson, you look at jason riley, you look at the conservatives, there seems to be leftists give you a path for being awful. they give you a path for being awful. >> have you noticed during all

these jesse jackson has not appeared. and louis farrakhan has not said a thing. >> yeah, he did, he said the riots were a-okay. >> he said something to the effect of let's burn this place down. >> i i think jackson is looking at this thing and saying and listen to what sharpton's getting, because he's in the wrong direction, and he's decided he wants to stay out of this. but when it comes to the question about the judicial system, there is something to what allan west said, with all due respect, there are some blacks to believe they're not getting a fair shake in the judicial system. whether it's true or not, that's their perception. >> and there's whites that think they're not getting a fair shake, and there's asians who think -- let's work on our rhetoric, let's not be divisive, let's not make our judicial system which is the best in the world a little bit better with some thoughtful discussion and

understanding and appreciate those who protect and serve. >> can i agree with bob, though? >> no. >> they're legitimate beliefs, sincere protests, but they have been hijacked by radical idealogy. race has become a revolution, and we hear about that from the protesters. >> i was going back and thinking about jason riley's comments about the mayor and his decision. like a president, the first decision has to be the number one relationship that i have to establish immediately, if you're president, is with the military, and with the intelligence services, those are the people you are going to depend on to uphold your highest responsibility which is protecting the american people. >> right. >> when you are mayor, the same is true for the police. so he made a decision early on that that was not going to be what he did. and that does eventually catch up to you and i think the police have been pretty respectful of just trying to be calm about it,
1:23 am
remember, it was de blasio who sat al sharpton next to bill bratton, the police commissioner, and made him sit there for a photo-op, the rest of the police basically steamed inside. he has multiple audiences whenever he speaks, the mayor does, and so does bratton and so does sharpton. the first regard you have to have when you speak to -- it's got to be the police, your competitors, business owners, and then washington, d.c. and i think de blasio had a nice run with the media up until recently. i don't know how he will try to get off the map. it could be that christmas helps. so basically everybody pause, hopefully it will be peaceful and people will have a nice time with their family. and if they really want to have a conversation about race coming back in january, they need to be very specific about what do you want to talk about, what do we need to deal with? and maybe it's the three issues,
1:24 am
if it's just education, if it's overcriminalization, i think that's good too the. but the third one has to be the police force and the sup fort for it. >> i don't know one politician that doesn't wish he has one line back in his career. and if think guy has oneline, it's that i told my kid to be afraid of the police. >> do you think it's true? or do you think it's a story. >> do i think he said it to his kids? >> these stories always feel like they were done for effect. >> yeah, manufactured. >> do you really think that he told his kid--his kid probably has two cops that guard him all the time anyway. >> this has been a really thoughtful discussion and i want to hear some words from dakota myer. >> none of us go out to serve this great nation, none of us say i'm going to go and serve on
1:25 am
behalf of white people or muslim or christians or hispanics or jews, or on behalf of republicans or democrats, not one day do we do that, we stand up and say we're going to serve to the people of america. the day that we serve by all of those subtitles is the day we drop to ignorance of what is intolerable. we have some breaking news of that movie that wasn't supposed to be in movie theaters on christmas day that was pulled following hacking threats. a big development coming up. next.
