quote -- "president bush was taken by ambulance to the houston methodist hospital as a precaution after experiencing a shortness of breath earlier this evening." the former president, age 90, will be held for observation, again, as a precaution. word about this hospital stay quickly made its way to hawaii where president obama is vacationing with his wife and daughters and a white house spokesperson tells us -- quote -- "the president has been made aware that president bush was admitted to the hospital. president obama and the first lady send their good wishes to the former president and the entire bush family during this holiday season." back in june, president bush actually went skydiving in maine for his 90th birthday but he has been slowed down by a variety of very serious health problems lately. last year he was hospitalized for two months because of a bad bout with bronchitis and he's been wheelchair bound because of a form of parkinson's that makes it hard for him to

it's got protesters who took to fifth avenue blocking traffic and all of that. but essentially they have been defying what mayor bill de blasio called for and that is to press the pause button and ask for peace. that's what we've got coming. >> the mayor taking a lot of heat in recent days. yesterday he was calling for calm. he finally got that message. in fact, i think we have that clip. let's hear it. >> we have to keep working to bring police and community closer together. we have to work for that more perfect union. we have to put the divisions of the past behind us. all of us in this generation action we need to protect and respect our police just as our police protect and respect our communities. we can strike that balance. we must.

anarchist agenda with some people. so the question we ask today, although president obama is on vacation in hawaii for the christmas vacation, vice president joe biden will be attending officer ramos's fiewn on saturday. in fact, his family foregave his murderer. the question becomes is that a good idea? is the president meeting his obligation in terms of bringing unity to this country? should he be making more of a public outreach to law enforcement community and also people of good will to bring black americans, white americans, police and civilians together? >> i think it was a smart idea for the president to send vice president biden to the funeral because this shoation a high-level -- this shows a high-level person. if the president himself had gone to the funeral it would be wonderful but you're setting this precedent of this president, the next president going to police

bronchitis, a prolonged bout of bronchitis. that is something else you might think of here. sometimes with parkinson's you can't manage the saliva that easily and you get bronchitis much more easily. >> i remember two years ago being in hawaii with president obama and former president bush had gotten ill. a lot of people were worried about hill but he had a lot of strength. >> number one is courage. he's indomitable. i believe when you have a spirit like his and the courage to overcome and everyone's prayers are with him, the outcome is always better. and that kind of force of will is why he's still jumping out of planes at the age of 90. i think that is a big factor. this is a milder form of parkinson's. it affects your legs and he's in a while chair. i have predicted before and would predict again that if i don't hear anything else i would expect him to make full recovery. >> what would the time line on that be?

you. >> good to see you this morning. merry christmas to you. santa dealing with a strong storm system especially across parts of the eastern united states. yesterday we did have reports of tornadoes and reported damage across parts of the south. there is currently a tornado watch in effect early this morning across portions of northern florida and into georgia. that will be something we watch very closely throughout the morning hours, the possibility of severe weather. that will be continuing throughout parts of the carolinas and portions of virginia. could be looking at thunderstorms that could produce isolated severe weather and parts of the ohio valley as well. otherwise the other big issue with this storm system is flash flooding. we have that threat throughout the day. several inches of rainfall expected up and down the east coast. you can see that rain already creeping on towards portions of the northeast, already raining here in new york city. very lightly but it should be picking up in intensity later today. on the cold side of the storm system i'm sure some of you really want some snow just in time for

he was asked to light the tree and they said put a button in the white house for you. when he found out it was going to cost $500 to install that button, he said i'll just walk over there and save the money. so presidents have been at the christmas tree lighting ever since and it started on christmas eve and later moved to earlier in december. calvin coolidge was also the first president to deliver a christmas message to the american people. in 1927, americans opened their newspapers and found a very simple message from calvin coolidge that said christmas is not a season or a time, but it's a state of mind for peace and goodwill. >> how did a holiday party result in the naming of the white house as the white house? >> well, the white house was used in the newspapers dericesively, let's tear jefferson out of that white house. a reporter went to a party with dolly madison and suddenly he was calling it the white house, it was a positive team.

now another developing story. just days after two police officers were killed in cold blood, a terrifying new threat against new york's findest. >> david lee miller joins us live with the details. good morning, merry christmas. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. new york city police remain on edge in the aftermath of the execution style slayings of two officers and they're taking precautions to protect cops. now a couple of new threats have emerged. gang members threatening to shoot up two precincts not far from where the two officers were killed. security has been beefed up at both locations. it is not clear how credible this threat is. swat teams have been deployed at both locations. this as mayor de blasio says attacks on police will not be tolerated. >> we need to protect and respect our police just as our police protect and respect our communities. we can strike that balance. we must.

>> reporter: protesters ignoring the call. last night they packed the stop the protests until after the funeral of the two police officers who were slain. some of the demonstrators carried signs that read, and i quote, jail killer cops. there were no arrests. in another development, a judge released a man without bail after he allegedly made terroristic threats. police say the 18-year-old posted a photo online of a gunman target ago patrol car. it had the caption, 73 next. that is the police precinct where coaly lives. prosecutors wanted a quarter million dollars bail. the judge called the posting stupid, but said it would be wrong to set bail because of the current climate.

breaking story. days after two new york city police officers were executed in cold blood comes a terrifying new threat against new york's finest. to shoot up several police precincts. joining us now, the former new york city police commissioner, ray kelly. good to see you. merry christmas. we'll get to the tragedy and the aftermath. but talk about these threats now against police officers that we see overnight increasing. >> unfortunately, you have to take these threats seriously and answer any incident that's an increase in threats. now we know there are hundreds of threats against new york city police officers and police officers throughout the country. and obviously based on what happened saturday, you have to be very much concerned about them. >> how does commissioner bratupon get on top of that? you've been in that seat before. we've been getting reports that on new year's eve, when there was a big police presence in times square all around the city, that they're now going to be even more officers and on higher alert because they're not just dealing with potential terror inside times square, but dealing with potential threats,

unfortunately, gets them. >> obviously are going to be alert. to disseminate any intelligence information they have. officers have to watch each other's backs. it's difficult time. but the department has gone through these things through the years. sincely in my time as a police officer in the '70s. we had the black liberation army actively fascinating team of police officers. in 1972 we had four police officers shot and killed. hopefully we'll get past this. >> you quarterbacked the greatest decrease of crime in history in new york at this city and at the same time keeping new york city safe during the age of terrorism. why are we having these tense, turbulent, hard times in new york and around the country now? what is the cause of what's going on in new york city? >> obviously the focus on michael brown case and the eric garner case has brought an awful

lot of attention to the police. there are activists who are antipolice regardless of what the police do and sort of coalesced around the two incidents and you see these people demonstrating, even though the mayor asked them to hold off until after the funerals. they are not going to be swayed. part of them certain -- not all, but there is a faction, people come from out of town to demonstrate here. many of them are young middle class people, white people, who are demonstrating and they certainly have a right to do that. but when they take over bridge, take over our highways, then that's too much. >> you always had a reasonable approach and able to bring people together as the police commissioner. how do we bring people together in this christmas season while

at the same time, enforcing the rule of law? >> we have to continue or communicate or increase communications, if you will, i think reverend bucks was speaking saying there was not enough communication. we prided our self on the communication we had with all aspects of the community. i think we need more of that. he's pointing out that this administration needs to do more of that. >> can you talk about the leadership of mayor de blasio? it started very tense with the police because of his opposition to stop and frisk and take it forward to the last couple of days when the chief of the police union suggested that the mayor has blood on his hands. i know it's a difficult question. what's your -- >> first of all, i know peter knows and i know firsthand how difficult a job being mayor is. however, words matter. i think the mayor's statement about his son is something that i'm sure he believes. but you don't say that when you're the mayor of all the people.

good morning. >> you look fantastic. >> how are you feeling? >> great. how you feeling? >> pretty good. tell us a little bit more of your back story. when you came here a year ago, what was going on in your life? >> we came here a year ago, things were getting a little crazy 'cause she needed certain care, help and stuff like that. he wrote a beautiful story and it got us the attention we needed. >> right. when your mother was diagnosed, you were just ten years old. correct? >> yes. >> and at that time, you went to judo and art classes and everything a little boy would want to do and basketball and football and all of that. but things changed. how did things change for you? >> he was six. >> oh, six. i apologize. how did things change during the diagnosis? >> i mean, when i was young, i kind of didn't know too much of what was going on. as i grew older, started to progress. when i saw it progress, i saw things start to set us back.

it was kind of scary at first. i wasn't sure what was going on of the i knew i had to step up and stop being a little boy and ability like a little man and take care of my mother. >> beta, what did that mean for you? what were some things he did on a daily basis? >> oh, my god. i can't even begin to tell you the things that he did. >> the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning. >> he did the laundry, the cook. he did the food shopping. he did everything and more than anything, he would clean me up. >> now that he's away, how has life changed for you? i know you were a bit anxious about it. are things going okay? >> yes. things are great. they're really great. and i am extremely b have greate calls me, i'm able to say really good. >> so you call her every single day, which a lot of college kids

are out drinking and carrying on and not wanting to call mom and dad. but not you. how has your bond been strengthened over the distance? is there a silver lining somehow you can find? >> me and my mother, we've always had the strongest bond. i got to talk to my mother every day. i make amends. i finish everything i'm doing and give my time for them 'cause they're the reason i do it for. >> what about the support from the community? >> oh, they're great. they are great. you know. >> 'cause your care is expensive >> it is. but all i could say is i'm extremely thankful. i have the greatest son in the world. >> you can see just how proud of you -- >> i'm just excited. >> yeah. i understand you're doing pretty well in school. you've been able to manage a lot. how you doing? >> i'm doing great.

you'll see this sign of resilience and rebirth throughout the city. >> i heard the story in your homily about you were in the bronks about to say mass. >> you listen to my homily? >> i'm really glad you're here. >> i try. >> peter sleeps. >> i read it. and you told a story, you were in the bronks about to say mass and you saw a couple police officers who looked upset and you had not yet heard -- >> that got more coverage. last saturday i had mass at a parish in the bronks. i had mass in the new york diocese every saturday night. this was in kind of a troubled area of the bronks. it was the saint simon stock. when i arrived, the police are there. they usually are. it's usually good when i'm there to help with traffic and the crowd and i could see they looked somber and that's when i heard the tragic news. went and visited the precinct, very moving, to pray with those men and women in uniform. anyway, the story you're talking about was at mass.

here i am saying mass, jammed church. at a certain point in mass, i looked to the side and there was a secluded chapel off to the side. nobody else could look in. i could see from the side. there were two -- i choke up thinking about it. there were two of our new york's finest on their knees. their hats on the floor. their hands folded. and just locked in prayer before our lord and the blessed sacrament. and i was just hypnotized. here these two men of faith at a troubled time. i'm sure they were playing for their two fallen brothers and for their colleagues because what a sense of peril these dedicated men and women sense now. but there is an example, peter, of what i was just talking about. this resilience at a time that could be, they could be paralyzed by fear and desperation. they find solace and hope and prayer. >> and there is resilience and you speak about the notion of coming together, of people have

dispar rat interests that might even hate each other, but then come together even for a moment in this christmas spirit of birth and hope. you point out to an historical example of that. >> yeah. peter and i were chatting. peter comes by every once in a while and we chat. i told him i love history. this year i've been mesmerized because it's the centennial of world war 1. i've been fascinated by this story. i never heard it before. peter said he had. of the famous christmas truce of 1914. i never heard it. world war i began in august -- >> this is historically accurate. so what have we got in christmas, the war has been slugging along for about five months. you literally got british and german soldiers, football field apart, guns cocked. bay nets ready. the christmas truce is announced. at midnight on christmas, one or

two guys cautiously from each side sort of get out of the trenches, sort of walk towards each other. they're kind of cautious. the closer they get, they smile. they shake hands. before long, this is documented -- before long, hundreds and thousands of men along the lines are together. they're singing songs. they're chatting. they're recalling memories. they're showing the gifts that they got from home and even sharing them. this captivated the world. the pope at the time, said what tutsi we declare a christmas truce fort rest of history? those guys, by the way, were punished because the leaders then said, we can't trust you guys on the line now because now you've met each other, you know each other, you might not be able to shoot each other. so they transferred them. but what a sign of hope in the midst of one of the greatest wars, the carnage that we've ever had. >> with that event, also the

event going on in new york city right now, those are moments in history that we won't forget affecting the masses. many people for them it's a dark time. maybe they lost a loved one or their job or something like that. so how do we in our personal lives, overcome the darkness? >> they'll tell us that, anna. that christmas time not only does it bring forth what's best in us, but those who are struggling and suffering, it will remind them of what they're missing. but i will tell you this, as a priest, i find that even those people seize and cling to hope at this time and they'll see it. the other day i was over in saint patrick's cathedral. doesn't it look beautiful, by the way? calling it the unwrapping of new york's christmas gift. anyway, i go over, i was dressed in street clothes. but st. patrick's gets two million visitors between thanksgiving and epiphany.

and i just kind of walk around and i'm listening. i see a mom with her two boys and they're lighting candles and they're saying, this is for grandma. remember she died this year. and this is for your dad who is sick. and then one of the boys said, mom y are we doing this? and the mom just simply said, because we need god. we need god. and then i thought as i walked over to our crib, crowded with people, what's there but the empty manger, we're awaiting the arrival of the savior, the messiah. and i thought what, a time when the whole world is almost just inside of us saying, we need god. we need god. that's what christmas is about. >> what about people around the holidays who have not been close to god this year? i remember as a kid growing up catholic, sometimes you kind of look down on people who only came to church on christmas. but my mom hears the church has been saying during the holy week, if you've been away, come home. >> come home. i say that. look, how many families, how many moms and dads with grown

kids said, we only get together for easter and christmas. but darn it, i'll take it. i'm just thrilled we got them then. so that's what we as a church. we're a spiritual family. we say and kind of wish the kids could come home more often. but i'm thrilled they're here for christmas and east of. hallelujah. come on in. we're thrilled you're here. let's pray and hope you enjoy it. we're doing the same thing on sunday. come back. >> for other spiritual leaders who are going to be doing more things as you, speaking to hundreds of people, what message do you have for them to try to get these people to come back, not just on the next easter or christmas holiday? >> i say to them, in a way i'll say, why are you here? they'll say, well, because kind of deep down we have our faith. we have our hope. it's good to be here and we were raised with a sense of religion and with a sense of the life of the spirit. and i'll say, well, see, even though you think your faith is sluggish, even though you think you don't need religion anymore, even on these big days, you come home. and why don't we make this permanent?

why don't we make this more stable in your life? >> we heard earlier this morning, the whom whose husband is in prison in eye ran, christian minister. he has made paper crosses for two years in the prison cell that he's in n this cold, bare prison cell where he's reviled by his captors. talk to us if you could about the hope of christmas, even when people are in prison, even for their religion. what's the hope of christmas for the poor, for the suffering? >> actually, peter, you know what? they do a better job of explaining it than i ever could. i am always moved when the poor of the people -- when i go to a prison, when i go to a pediatric cancer ward, when i visit somebody who is poor, when i visited the ramos family the other day, i'm expecting these people are going to be desperate. >> and they forgave the murderer. >> yeah. i'm saying they're going to be desperate. these people are going to look at me and say why would god do

this? my faith is dead. it's the opposite. they're the ones that sense this hope and this resilience deep down. they're the ones who end up preaching to me. when i go to the ramos family the other day and when the son says to me, would you lead news a prayer? you know what that does to me? he's the john the baptist to me, reminding me of jesus. and i see that all the time, peter, when i visit prisoners. when i go to the pediatric ward. even of the kids with cancer. i'm thinking issues how am i going to explain this to the folks? i don't have to. they're the ones who just have this almost this built-in sense of trust this is going to work out, this hope for the miraculous. >> what an inspiring message on christmas. >> one question. you said you spend a lot of time with peter. >> yeah. >> is there any hope for him on this christmas? >> we have a saint jude shrine. >> you do. >> if you want to come by.

>> so what's the significance? >> once again we're seeing the employment situation improve. we are definitely seeing slow but sure signs that we're turning a corner in the u.s., which is very positive. of course, the president is right now trying to -- almost feels like campaign on these numbers. after the gdp yesterday, we're seeing the economy has shown improvement. the problem is people are not necessarily feeling it. as you know, poll after poll, people feel like their wages are down. they don't feel the improvements are trickling down. >> they're starting to dribble out of the white house. we're hearing in the state of the union in january, the president will talk a lot about the economy. he'll have new plans to fix it. as you say, deja vu, we've heard this. yes, the numbers are getting better, but what can he do to try to sell that, to convince people it's actually starting to trickle down? >> everybody knows that the president's job creating policies have not been there. and they actually have been a failure. there is no doubt about it that at this point in the cycle, we should be seeing a lot better growth. we should be seeing a lot better

job creation. the problem is we see an environment where business is under attack. and business is unsure of what the tax rates will be, what the regulatory environment will be, what the fees associated with that will be. so they're sitting on cash, hoarding cash, and not actually hiring to the extent you would expect. no surprise the president wants to attach himself to these numbers at this point. of course, it's the top concern. >> you mention a lot of polls. we have a new one, what does -- what do the american people want the president to work on? overwhelmingly, they say he needs to focus on the economy. it's not just job creation, it's also getting the wages up. what will that take? >> i think now the question is, will he care enough about his legacy to actually work with republicans in the next two years to pass job creating bills? so we'll see about that. the jury is out. so far it does not look like the two sides are working together. but it will be a new congress in the next couple of weeks. it will be a new day in washington.
