two thumbs up. one up, one down, where would you go with it? >> unspeakably bad. >> you have a furlt in -- future in this business. >> thank you for joining us, merry christmas to you. ♪ ♪ >> welcome to fox news channel west point holiday special. i'm jon scott.s coming to you from thepeci grounds of the united states military academy at west point, new york. west point is america's oldest military post. and one ofmi our country'sw most fabled universities. each year more than 1,000 cadets universities. each year more than a thousand cadets graduate from here, and tonight we'll get a rare glimpse of the rich traditions of the united states military. and we'll also get to enjoy the music of the army's oldest band. the west point band is one of

america's finest military musical organizations. throughout the next hour, willing hear them on the field. in the halls. and on stage as they perform for the public in their annual holiday concert. but before we get to the music, let's go to washington, d.c. for a special message from general martin dempsey chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. >> thank you for the opportunity to show case this national treasure during the holidays and of course, to hear the music of the west point band, the army's oldest and one of its very best. i also don't want to miss the opportunity to highlight the service and sacrifice of the millions of servicemen and women, serving our nation add home and abroad during these holidays. i wish them happy holidays. >> the holiday would not be

>> jon: we're back with the west point we're glad you're with us for our west point holiday special, i'm john scott, here at the academy of west point, to bring you the amazing sounds of the band. the academy sits overlooking the hudson river, the location chosen in 1778 is no accident. >> george washington founded west point because he knew it was very important strategically. and founded in 1778. >> general washington chose this location to stop the advancement during the revolutionary war. years later, with the legislation signed by thomas jefferson in 1802, the college was established devoted to training professional leaders in warfare. now, more than 200 years later, they're aware of the legacy placed on their shoulders. >> tradition is everywhere here,

the uniforms were the same as it was in 1802 when the school opened. it gives us a background and experience to draw from. >> since day one, everyone has their heart set on serving the country. it is something you never regret, so you always get hyped and re-inspired. >> i think if the average america wants to see what is right with america, they would find it here at west point with the cadets, with america's sons and daughters. they are just incredibly talented and on top of that they have an intense desire to serve their country. west point's motto is serve, they are the epitome of duty when they first get here even. >> and as long as there have been soldiers at west point, there has been a band. >> there were field musicians, and drummers, they go all the way back to the 1700s in the

colonial army. >> the military drums were the primary form of communication from the revolution to the civil war. and achieving the impressive goal in the 1800s, for the impressive sounds to be heard above battle. so they have marched to the west point band's field music. >> we have continued to try to inspire a sense of morale. >> that is the same type of group and even the same type of music, and instruments they still play today. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> they march the cadets from the place you see. >> we all form up, they call the company to attention, and that is where we all eat.

they play the drums to keep everyone in step. left foot first, right foot, so on and so forth. >> you see them all marching in to the beat of the drum. the entire group eats at one time. >> in addition to keeping them in a precise military schedule that makes up the west point schedule, they perform at football games, admit reviews and parades and countless other events. >> they play marching music to ensure that we march and move as an army. we march and move as a unit. it is part of good order and discipline, and the ability to maintain that standard of excellence that the army is known for. >> so let's go back now inside the eisenhower hall to the hudson valley eisenhower concert. and here is the west point band.

welcome back to fox news channel's west point holiday special. i'm john scott. and that was the west point glee club, singing the west point alma mater, this is the time of year that the west point cadets look forward to a well deserved break. >> they have been working very hard, just the opportunity to go home and sleep in their own beds with their moms and dads and brothers and sisters, just their local high school, it is something they're anticipating and looking forward to. >> it is also the time to remember the thousands of americans celebrating the holidays far from home. >> these are the highest quality young men and women out there, selfishly standing between the evil that is between us and our

values. like generations that have gone before them, they are willing to stand in those ranks and do what is needed. >> the christmas season here is incredibly busy. we have homework, quizzes, tests, getting ready for finals. >> you're far away, you're not with your real family, but the people make it feel special. a rare moment when you realize the people around you, all 4,000 of us, are really a family. >> i'll be home for christmas. >> and there is one december tradition that everyone looks forward to. >> every year, the cadets have a holiday dinner where they get dressed in their best uniforms. washington hall will be decorated beautifully. >> and washington hall is no ordinary dining hall. >> the entire corps of cadets, all roughly 4400 of us eat in that dining hall for every meal. >> christmas meal is the best night that any one of us can

remember. >> one of the best traditions, they come into the mess hall. >> they wrap everything and some even have lights, they just create this beautiful table for us. >> one of the most amazing things is to see those thousands of cadets, up to 4600, in 20 minutes all of them will be served with a great, first class meal. >> everybody sitting at the table, with a big family style meal, passing food around, talking, getting to know your classmate. >> you just laugh, have fun exchange jokes. >> it is an opportunity for cadets, young and old, to bond as a unit. >> probably one of the most exciting things here. >> massive washington hall is not even the most impressive structure at west point. one of the most awe-inspiring college campuses in america. the u.s. military academy was the first institution in the country to adopt the gothic

style of architecture. a civ a symbol to lead the united states army, one of the most interesting was the chapel. >> the building was built in 1909. and they finished in 1910. it was designed to sit here on the hill and watch over the corps of cadets, down on to plain. >> the chapel provides a spiritual home to cadets from different religious backgrounds. amazingly, this magnificent building took just over a year to complete. >> they had irish and italian immigrants who were stone masons, brought in to work on the chapel. they were told if they completed the chapel in five years, they would get citizenship. they completed it in four months. >> each stained glass window was

a memorial, given over time by their classmates. >> as you go through the sanctuary, there are 192 windows. they're each dedicated to one of the graduating classes, beginning in 1802 and up until 1976 when they ran out of space for doing anymore windows ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ you better watch out you better not cry ♪ i'm telling you why ♪ santa claus is coming to town ♪

♪ the pride that we have being members of the west point band, and especially me, as the drum major, is that i get to lead the greatest band in the world, doing many different functions here at west point, and working with the cadets is also really great. my favorite parade of the year was the graduation parade. all the music we play is very traditional. it is all marching music. but it is music that is dated as far back as 1838. and all of that music has been the fabric of west point, just like the buildings.
