d a happy new year ♪ welcome to fox news channel's west point holiday special. i'm john scott coming to you from the grounds of the united states military academy at west point, new york. west point is america's oldest military post. and one of our country's most fabled universities. each year more than a thousand cadets graduate here and become officers in the united states army. tonight, we will not only get to explore the rich history of west point and get a rare glimpse of the living traditions of the united states military, but we'll also get to enjoy the music of the army's oldest band.

the west point band is one of the military's finest musical installations. throughout the next hour we'll hear them on the field, in the halls and on stage as they perform for the public in their annual holiday concert. but before we get to the music, let's go to washington, d.c. for a special message from general martin dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and a 1974 west point graduate. general. >> thanks for the opportunity to showcase this national treasure during the holidays, and of course to hear the music of the west point band the army's oldest and one of its very best. i also don't want to miss this opportunity to highlight the service and sacrifice of the millions of servicemen and women serving our nation at home and abroad during these holidays. i wish them and their families happy holidays. >> general dempsey, thank you. the holiday season would not be complete without the annual west point holiday concert in

eisenhower hall. named for class of 1915 graduate, general and later president, dwight eisenhower eisenhower hall is one of the largest theaters in america designed to hold the entire corps of cadets. so let's get right to it. here's the west point band in the hudson valley holiday concert performing holiday presents. ♪ ♪

we're glad you're with us for our west point holiday special. i'm jon scott here on the grounds of the united states military academy at west point to bring you the amazing sounds of the west point band. the academy sits on a plateau overlooking new york's hudson river. and it's location chosen in 1778 is no accident. >> george washington honored west point because he knew it was incredibly important strategically and found it in 1778. >> chosen to stop the british advancement during the revolutionary war. twenty-four years later with legislation signed by thomas jefferson, the college was established devoted to training professional leaders in warfare. now more than 200 years later today's cadets are well aware of the impressive legacy placed on their shoulders. >> tradition is everything here. it permeates through everything that we do.

i mean, our uniforms are the same as they were in 1802 when the school opened. it gives us a background and something to draw from in our lives and experiences as cadets. >> since day one everyone has their heart set on serving their country. it's not something you ever regret. it's something you always get hyped about and re-inspired and re-motivated. >> i think if the average american wants to see what's right with america, they would find it right here at west point and its cadets and sons and daughters. these men and women are just incredibly talented. on top of that they have an intense desire to serve their country. west point's motto is duty, honor and country. they ethicalize duty even when they first get here. >> as long as there have been soldiers at west point there has been a band. >> there were field musicians and drummers and pipers that go back to the 1700s in the

colonial army. >> military drums were the primary form of communication from the revolution to the civil war. and the bugle achieved an increasingly important role for the ability of its bold brilliant sound to be heard above the noise of battle. so throughout history west point cadets have marched to the beat of the west point band's field music beat. >> we've continued to try to inspire a sense of morale into the core of ka detds. >> that's the same type of music, even same instrument they still play today. ♪ they march cadet from place to place. and the thing that you will see is daily formations for lunch. >> we all form up and they call the company to attention and we march in formation to the mess hall where we eat.

they play the drum to keep everyone in step. we're all marching at the same pace, left foot first right foot, so on and so forth. >> you'll see them all marching in to the beat of a drum. the entire corps cadet eat all at one time. >> in addition to keeping the cadets on a precise military schedule that makes up life at west point performs at football games, military reviews and parades and countless other events. >> the hell cats play marching music to ensure that we march and move as an army. we march and move as a unit. it's part of good order and discipline. and the ability to maintain that standard of excellence that the army is known for. >> so let's go back now inside eisenhower hall to the hudson valley holiday concert. and here are the hellcats and west point band performing

welcome back to fox news channel's west point holiday special. i'm jon scott. and that was the west point glee club singing the west point alma mater. december is a special time around here. look forward to a well-deserved break from their studies in training. >> well, the holiday season is a very special time. they've been working very hard. just the opportunity to go back home and to sleep in their own beds and be with their moms and dads and brothers and sisters and their local high school again. it's just something they're really anticipating looking forward to. >> it's also a time to remember those who have gone before them and the thousands of americans celebrating the holidays far from home. >> these are the highest quality of young member and women in the country today. selflessly standing in the gap between the evil that's out there and our national values. and they welcome the opportunity to do that. like generations that have gone

before them, they are willing to stand in those ranks and to do what's necessary. >> walking to the post the holiday spirit is palpable. >> the holiday spirit here is in incredibly busy. homework, quizzes tests getting ready for finals. >> you're far away, but the people around you make it feel like the holidays. it's a rare moment when you realize the people around you like all 4,000 of us are really a family. >> there's one december tradition that everyone looks forward to. >> every year the cadets have a holiday dinner where they get dressed in their best uniform. washington hall will be decorate decorated beautifully. >> and washington hall is no ordinary dining hall. >> the entire corps of cadets all roughly 4,400 of us eat in that dining hall for every meal. >> christmas dinner is like the best night that all cadets can remember. >> one of the traditions that happens at west point is that --

>> they wrap everything in paper. some leave gifts. some even bring up lights. >> kind of a competition to decorate the christmas table with the most decorations. >> they use their creativity to create this beautiful table for us. >> one of the most amazing things for us to see those thousands of cadets, up to 4,600, 20 minutes and all of them will be served with a great first-class meal. >> everybody sitting at a table of ten big family style meal passing food around, talking, getting to know your classmates. >> you just laugh and have fun, talk and exchange jokes. >> it's an opportunity for cadets, both young and old to bond as a unit. >> it's probably the most exciting thing during the holidays here. it's a lot of fun. >> massive washington hall isn't even the most impressive structure at west point. one of the most awe-inspiring campuses in all of america, the academy was the first in the country to adopt the gothic style of architecture.

the core buildings form an imposing granite fortress symbolic of the strength and tenacity needed to lead the united states army into the future. among the many great structures is the cadet chapel which resembles a gothic medieval fortress overlooking the campus. >> the building was built in 1909. they finished in 1910. it was designed to set here on the hill and watch over the corps of cadets down on the plain. >> the chapel is one of five on post, each providing a spiritual home to cadets from different relijre religious backgrounds. >> they had irish and italian immigrants who were stone masons and they were brought in to be the special artisans to work on the chapel. they were told if they complete the chapel in five years they would get citizenship. well, they completed it in 14 months, so i would say they were pretty well motivated to get it done. >> each stained glass window

pane is a memorial. >> as you go through the sanctuary there are 192 windows. they're each dedicated to one of the graduating classes beginning in 1802 and up until 1976 when they ran out of space for doing anymore windows. ♪ ♪ you better watch out, you better not cry ♪ ♪ better not pout, i'm telling you why, santa claus is coming

throughout their time here. >> our job is to train them, educate them and then spar them to a lifetime of service. lifetime of service to the nation. but to be young men and women and officers of character. the character development is based on the values of duty honor and country and the values of our army. and it's integrated in everything that we do in all of the different programs here at west point. >> let's get back now to the music of the west point band as we rejoin the hudson valley holiday concert for winter games. ♪

♪ [ applause ] >> the pride that we have of being members of the west point band and especially me as the drum major is that i get to lead the greatest band in the world doing many different functions here at west point. and working with the cadets is also really great. my favorite parade of the year is the graduation parade. all the music we play is very traditional. it's all marching music. but it's music that is dated as far back as 1838. and all of that music has been the fabric of west point just like the buildings.
