♪ welcome back to the five new year's eve. some of the biggest stories of 2014. and the most talked about topic this year on facebook

was the ebola scare. and there were plenty of others to go around. we're going to go back and reflect on some of them. we are going to begin with dana perino. what was your big story choice? >> if you are looking at story standpoint from getting together and get a story going on social media. >> are are you getting money from big soccer? >> no, little socker. >> from the grass that grows there. >> i think that was a very interesting choice. >> surprising. >> ordinarily wouldn't think that you would lead with sports although you are incredible at betting with football. >> i am very good. i do think that the world cup was a huge event for brazil.

despite a few hiccups they did pretty well. the united states that story line was amazing. they went pretty far in the competition. not expected to do. so i think from the social media standpoint, if you are marketer and looking across the world and want to sell products around the world, that was an amazing thing because it brought people young and old together, all different cultures, all speaking together in one spot. that's amazing. >> globalist. >> do you have a commentary on that. >> i don't think anybody remembers the world cup. >> i do. >> who won? >> i don't remember who won. [ laughter ] >> i just like the guys. but i did go and get -- when people say that americans soccer, trust me, i had to go to so many of the sporting good stores, to get those soccer books. world cup, trading books, they had the trading cars cards and stickers. i was buying them on amazon. >> for you? >> we shared it at my house. kids like it and he loves

soccer. i'm excited about soccer in the united states. >> did you know in french soccer means zero zero. >> okay. well that was an interesting fact today. bowling, are you warming up to soccer too? >> it's really really interesting to watch. fun to watch at that competitive world cup level. to watch anything below world cup i can't even watch major indoor -- are s. there still major indoor soccer. i don't know. i couldn't sit through a game. >> bob is our roving soccer correspondent you might not get that if greg's theory. >> that's what he used to love to do. he used to love to yell that and hang out with josh. eric, what have you you got for me. >> the story that i'm baffled by to this day. what happened to the malaysian airplane? i mean, it was there. it was gone. some theories that were all over the place all over the board. terrorism, pilot error. the plane is still

somewhere. it's going to come back. putin. >> evapor rated. vaporize. >> to this day i cannot believe they can't find one single molecular of that airplane somewhere. >> very disturbing. >> so what is your conspiracy theory tell you you? >> i don't know. listen, can i put it this way? look, i lost an uncle. my uncle was shot down in world war ii in the south pacific. they never found a piece of that airplane either. and after like 2000 years someone came forward and said we saw this airplane came down. never found one piece of wreckage. maybe it's more common than we know. >> how long that story lasted. we were on that thing for three or four weeks. >> cnn did four months. >> no joke. they are still doing it. >> it is. it could potentially be the biggest story ever, depending on where it went. if the plane was taken by terrorists. and it's somewhere or if the pilot committed a terrorist act. that's a big story. but it could -- it's that most obvious answer.

probably the right one and probably some bizarre malfunction that's what it was. >> doesn't it remind you still watch that show lost on abc. >> together. remember in the basement. >> not really. >> then you were found. bob, guess what you? are up next. what was your biggest story of 2014? >> well, it was the saddest story for me. but you have got to give it credit. the takeover of the united states senate by the republicans. if you look at the map prior to the elections in november and then look at it afterwards republicans whooped up on us and they have got the senate back by a pretty big number. bigger than most people thought. i have got to think in terms of the balance of power in terms of policy, in terms of lots of things, that was the biggest story. >> you know what was under reported story of the election was the so-called down ticket republican win. >> state legislature. >> city council all across 70% of state legislatures are now run with republican majorities which means a lot for the future as well. and also if you are a governor, if you are a republican governor and you

have a republican majority. >> blue state. >> then you can do a lot of good policy work. >> that was a big surprise. there were two or three. >> governing wins in blue states. >> maryland. >> illinois. >> illinois. >> connecticut. >> so there were a lot of stories to choose from, right? we had eric garner, we had ferguson, the whole deal. but the biggest story from me from a national security and foreign policy standpoint was definitely isis. and the tremendous amount of coverage that we gave that and we just see this reresurgence of terror from even the taliban and pakistan. murdering the children coming out of nowhere and the horrible crimes that have been committed and beheadings so this is something that we remain vigilant about and we are going to see this story continue forward in 2015. and hopefully we are able to save some lives and do incredible things as a country make people safe. >> what's interesting about isis is that something like

that would not have achieved what it did without the media. and max boot has said this before that terror really didn't come into being until there was mass media. there is no reason to exact terror. if it can't be disseminated globally. instead it would be a local horror. a man beheads somebody and terrorizes the religion is. now we live in a time where we play into terror. so, when somebody is beheaded or a cafe has taken hostage. it becomes a long drawnout event that benefits the person that does it no different than say spree killers who go into schools which then creates copycats. it makes me believe that the less you cover these horrible acts perhaps the less likely they will happen. people have said that athletes taking over. one where the world was brought into connection all around the world because tv brought it there that was the first one that i remember that was

significant terrorist attack. >> 2015 could with be a very important year well it will be an important year on the tear front. you look at even what's happening in the last six months of 2014. and how many nations have been the target of islamic terrorists. here at home, we have had incidents, they were levels, thankfully. canada, australia, and then in pakistan kimberly you mentioned 140 innocent lives being taken by the taliban in pakistan, there may be a -- a tipping point where you have nations coming together to try to do something. >> that's exactly right. >> war and ideological war to follow. >> the tipping point is when they started to behead people publicly. that's when all of a sudden the muslim countries began to say this is not islam. >> i'm not sure, bob. they were beheading people in the hills hills in iraq. >> finally got to the where they. >> what -- people in that isis has figured out a way

to get it to every cell phone on the planet. you want to see beheadings and the aftermath. >> that's the report that they were texting the generals to lay down arms see family for iraqi army. masters of media not just social media. put together videos like wow, it's some massive media company put these things together with music in motion. and that's probably one of their best recruiting tools believe it or not. >> greg, what you have got? >> i chose a global thing and it's media related. i call it the retreat from real evil. you look at ebola and look at isis. look at putin and north korea. there is an inability in mass media and in our government to procedure advertise threats. the media's definition of what is considered evil is internal. in fact, the united states is in itself the problem that needs to be fixed because it's white privilege or hereditary racism from our forefathers and we need to fix that where in reality it's external threats that we are talking about now.

which is isis. which is russia right now in the thrals of whatever is going on. you have north korea and ebola still in africa. those are external threats that we have put aside. the foreign thuggery and the terror that it costs our freedom is less foreign ache saling'ss of white privilege. this is something that you hear over and over again. the accusations of white privilege are necessary to transfer power and accuser from people i don't see myself as hurting anybody. >> are you surprised how quickly these stories came and went? we talked about isis, we talked about, you know, the irs, it seemed to go away. that's the way it works. sometimes helps people because they forget about it. if you are in the middle of a scandal like donald
