♪ welcome to new york. happy new year's eve everyone. welcome to the fox news countdown to 2015. i'm anna kooiman. >> and i'm jesse watters. it's time to start the party. >> yes, we're honored everyone is welcoming us into their homes tonight. >> yes, we have one of the best views of times square. in the shadow of the famous waterford crystal new year's eve ball. >> let's give everybody perspective, jesse. because right behind us, this is insane, this tradition has been going on in new york city since 1904 the people have been gathering into times square. the first ball dropped in 1907. it was just iron and wood. we've come a long way. >> we have. >> now there's thousands of crystals and tens of thousands of l.e.d. lights. a million people are packed into times square. and we get to be part of it. >> that's right. and there's a billion people watching tonight. we've got a great show. in a few hours we're going to have kimberly joining us. the famous bob beckel. >> do you think there's going to be a lip locking?

no, frigid but festive. it's like one big ice bucket challenge out here. i must say, you have to be adventurous and a little bit nuts to come especially from out of town. as a new yorker i can tell you we do not come out here. if we want to see balls drop, we go see a local sports team, the mets, the knicks, the jets we see all the balls drop we want with a warm seat, a cold beer and access to a bathroom. these lunatics out here do not have. look at these people. you came from el paso, texas, how long have you been out here? >> since 10:00. >> have you had access to a bathroom? have you been able to relieve yourself? >> no, i haven't, not at all. >> how much money would you pay me if i let you use the bathroom that i use? >> oh, i'll pay you -- what do you want? >> all right. i want to make some money. you're not wasting your time out here because later on bob beckel and george are going to play old

the year. >> wow. >> what unit are you in? >> well, i'm part of the afdw communications squadron in washington, d.c. ncr. >> what's your job? >> long haul communications, anything that communicates outside to overseas to all the other states. pretty much we provide that for all forces. >> well, you mentioned how tough it is during the holidays to be away from your family. and it was great that we could share, you know, those shoutouts from our troops serving overseas. you guys have had a long distance relationship for a long time. how long have you known each other and what's it been like? >> we've known each other since i was 16 and we've been dating for about four years. >> how did you guys meet? what happened there? >> we were at a friend's graduation party. she was actually dating one of my buddies at the time.

>> uh-oh. >> okay. i see how it is. >> but we met then. and then about probably three or four years later we started reconnecting. and when i was deployed, my first deployment we started talking online, and i came back and visited her and it heated up from there. >> amanda, is it true absence makes the heart grow fonder? >> it does make the heart grow fonder. it was always hard to go through when he was deployed, but we were able to talk as much as we could and stay connected. >> technology helps, doesn't it? >> it does, it does a lot. >> and america's armed forces foundation brought you guys here. are you having a good time in new york city so far? >> awesome. a great time. >> you look a little cold, you all right? >> it's pretty chilly out here. >> not like texas? >> nowhere near texas. >> how did you guys get tapped for this? >> well, i received an e-mail and i replied, pretty much. >> wrote an essay and all that,

sounds like you deserve it. >> it was pretty simple. >> all right. very good job. thank you very much and thanks for all your service. and you have a beautiful girlfriend. you're a very lucky guy. try to stay warm tonight, all right? >> do my best. >> we want you to be part of the show and we want everybody at home to be part of the show too. make sure you hit us up on social media, face bbook and twitter. we'll have you back to give a wave to the crowd again. >> thank you. >> we are expecting about a million people to ring in the new year here in times square. security's tighter tonight than usual in wake of weeks of police protests here in new york and around the country. for more on that let's go to fox news correspondent rick leventhal, rick. >> jesse, the nypd says times square is the safest place to be in new york city on new year's eve, which makes it one of the safest places to be in america. there are no specific threats against the celebration here at the crossroads of the world. nypd taking no chance obviously. thousands of police officers in uniform and in plain clothes joined by state police and federal agents including the

fbi, the atf and u.s. marshals. the governor even called in the national guard to work at airports and train stations to ensure security there as well. there are hundreds of cameras trained on the revelers here in times square being monitored at the nypd's joint operations center. they have heavily armed s.w.a.t. teams on the ground. they have helicopters in the sky. they have snipers on rooftops. and a lot of officers on the streets, bomb squads, radiation detectors, pretty much every tool in their arsenal has been deployed. officers by the way working in teams this year because of the heightened tension in the police department, in the city with all the protests and the recent assassination of two police officers. there also have been a lot of threats. the commissioner told us today 80 threats against police that have been recorded on facebook or twitter or by phone. and they have made 16 arrests because of these threat investigations. and they take every threat seriously. they're also a little concerned about protests tonight. we know that there is a crowd of roughly 150 or so gathered down

in union square. and they apparently plan to march up here towards times square. but the nypd says that will be impossible for them to actually reach this area. as you guys know it is locked down souper tight here. nypd doing a great job this year, as they do every year, to keep everyone safe and secure working. you can see they're working while the rest of us, well most of us, celebrate. >> that's right. you know, this protest specifically this is personal. a lot of these sometimes protesters here in new york city they're against, you know, for the climate change situation or it's an occupy wall street, these are anti-nypd protesters. you've talked to some of these police officers. do you get a sense this year is different on new year's eve and they're dealing with a different type of protest? or has that affected their mentality tonight? >> i don't know that's it's affected their mentality. i know that these guys are upset that the public might -- or some members of the public might turn

their eye toward the police that are risking their lives every day to keep this city safe. and there's definitely a different tone here. as i mentioned, officers working in pairs instead of by themselves. looking over their shoulders concerned about what might happen to them. but the commissioner has said it's been a challenger year but a great year and he wouldn't have it any other way and wouldn't want to do any other job. the guys on the street i think feel the same way. >> rick, thank you so much. we'll check back with you in just a bit. here's what's coming up, we're checking in on all the hottest new year's eve parties going on around the country tonight. >> and up next we'll go live to south beach for an a-list bash. and don't forget to write down your new year's resolution. tweet them to us using foxnews2015.

hollywood stars from the big screen are coming to the great white way. do you almost have to have this big name on broadway these days or no? >> not at all. gives a lot of hollywood stars another vehicle to go with their acting jobs. this season in 2015 jake gyllenhaal will be making a turn. elizabeth moss from "mad men" along with larry david opening a show he wrote, directed called "fish in the darkness." >> and hugh jackman. >> you'll see him in the tony awards. bradley cooper, performance of a lifetime in "elephant man." this great role in "american sniper" and definitely see him at the tonys. >> come to new york, stay at the hotel -- >> where we are right now. >> that's right. a little cold. maybe catch one of the fox news weekend summer concert series while you're at it. why not? make a weekend out of it.

is it safe? >> one of the reasons why times square is secure is that it isn't just about thousands of police officers but preparations throughout the day. and they swept through every garage, theater, hotel. and roof top. and then, they did start letting people in, they didn't let any backpacks they checked bags and they are keeping this place controlled as you can imagine. there are concerns about possible protests. new york city has been the scene of protests for the last five weeks or so. and after execution of two police officers when you have a million people

i do remain optimistic the country will come back and it's only 751 days until inauguration. it's been a great year because of the rather unexpected success in my book, things that matter. in fact, i got a call from a reporter with an article asking me to explain it i decided to play humble and said i don't know. maybe call around and ask others and let me know. i didn't hear anything. a friend called and said the story about the book, the new book is flying off the shelves. nobody knows why. that is the last time i play humble. now, what does make me humble is the good fortune that i've had.
