♪ pain hurts ♪ ♪ whiskey's tough ♪ ♪ and too much ain't never enough ♪ good morning. happy new year. hello, everyone. >> cleaning the streets of new york city already. times square. it has cleared out after millions of people were there all night, much of yesterday, celebrating the start of 2015. thank you so much for joining us. i'm heather childers. well, people all around the world crowding together to count down the start of a brand-new year. >> jeff is here now with a look at some of the best and brightest celebrations. >> well, happy new year's ladies, it's been an exciting night for revelers around the globe. just two hours ago thousands of people packed the strip in las vegas to see fireworks light up the sky. there have been concerns about wind there impacting the displays, but 80000 fireworks went off without a problem. millions of people packed the streets of new york city's times square. the city's mayor, bill de blasio, led the 60-second

countdown as that famous crystal ball dropped, resolutions began. >> be the best human being i can be. >> to be more honest with myself and everybody else. >> get maybe in shape, like everyone else. ♪ >> such a fun time. well, it was a peach that helped ring in the new year in atlanta georgia. the 800-pound peach was dropped for the 26th year. and people crowded into baltimore inner harbor to celebrate a new beginning there. the fireworks display topped the night. in australia, a drone caught a different view of fireworks. check it out. sydney's world-renowned fireworks display from the center of all the action. paris's countdown featured a light display and fireworks as well.

a new year's celebration turning deadly. 35 people crushed to death during a stampede at shanghai's historic waterfront just before midnight. witnesses say they saw people scrambling for coupons that looked like dollar bills being thrown out of a nearby third floor window. at least 46 others were hurt. weather continuing to be a big problem in southeast asia as crews continue to recover bodyies and search for debris in the crash airasia flight 8501. our david piper is in bangkok for us. david, good morning. what's the latest on the search? >> reporter: well, it's not looking too good, cheryl, at the moment. that bad weather is seriously hampering the search and recovery operation. divers can't even go down to check whether that object that's been sighted in the sea is, in fact, the missing plane. there was a break in the weather earlier today, raising hopes the underwater search could get under way. but it didn't last long and divers weren't able to transfer to the destroyers to begin

100-foot dives to the sea floor. ships from many nations including the "uss samsone" continue to look for debris. eight bodies have been recovered. 162 people were on board. some of them are reported to still have their clothes on. experts suggest this indicates the plane didn't break up in the air. the airasia indonesian plane went missing sunday en route from surabaya to singapore. the pilot radioed in that he was facing bad weather. he asked indonesian ground crowell if he could gain altitude, but contact was lost with the plane before the request was granted. some investigators are ugg issing the plane went into a storm after a steep ascent. now, the key is of course to recover those black bockx recorder. because of the bad weather, it could still take a few days. back to you. a new year's surprise, a rare sight. real snow in southern

california? more than 180 drivers had to be rescued after getting trapped on the highway. just look at this. yes, those are frozen palm trees near san diego. >> been here ten years i don't remember having weather like this. >> it's crazy. it's so beautiful. like you feel like you're in colorado. >> rare snow also causing problems on the road in cottonwood, arizona. is this arctic blast over? maria molina tracking it all in the weather center for us. good morning. >> hi, good morning. hello, everyone. we're tracking that winter storm that brought some winter weather across parts of southern california and also into the rockies. and is that storm system is going to be bringing in more winter weather across parts of the southern plains. and one of the reasons why we're seeing that winter weather out there is because we have some very cold temperatures in place across the rockies and also across parts of the plains. current temperature, 19 degrees in kansas city. you're in the single digits in the city of denver. also widespread across parts of utah.

so it is very cold out there. and then you have this area of low pressure with some moisture moving through. and that's helping to produce that winter weather across the rockies and also across portions of the plains. current windchills, what it feels like when you head out the door feels like five below zero in the city of denver. single digits in kansas city. and in minneapolis, you're looking at windchill temperatures that are below zero. but that cold air has now also moved farther off towards the east. we're in the teens in new york city and 20s for your current windchill temperatures across parts of the southeast. here's a look at those current winter storm warnings in effect. widespread across parts of the rockies and also into texas. texas, we're going to be looking at a bit of a wintry mix. watch out for slick driving conditions out there if you're hitting the roads on this new year's day. happy new year to you both, ladies. >> yes, to you too, maria. happy new year, 2015. some other news we are following, they wanted his trial moved out of boston and postponed it until september but the judge telling lawyers for the accused boston marathon bomber no way. as planned, jury selection is

set to begin monday. dzhokhar tsarnaev faces the death penalty if convicted of the 2013 terror attack that left three people dead and more than 260 others injured. death row cleared. maryland's outgoing mayor commutes the sentences of the last four inmates facing the death penalty. now, this time two years after the state's general assembly repealed capital punishment. democrat governor martin o'malley says the commuted sentences to prevent the state from dealing with an endless appeals process. chick-fil-a customers warned to check their credit cards. the fast food restaurant looking into a possible data breach. the company says suspicious card activity was reported at some of its restaurants. it's hired an i.t. contractor to investigate and says it will reach out to customers after learning more. much of the country getting a bigger paycheck in 2015. the minimum wage going up in 20 states and washington, d.c. the bump in pay means that 29 states now have a minimum wage

higher than the federal minimum which is $7.25. the new year means new laws take effect. in california people living in the country illegally now allowed to get driver's licenses. in louisiana, 16 and 17-year-olds can register to vote when getting their driver's license, but still can't vote until they're actually 18. in new york state no more throwing those old computers, tvs or video game consoles in the trash. consumers now required to recycle the unused electronics. and finally wine lovers living in massachusetts can now have out-of-state wineries ship bottles directly to their homes. the time is now ten minutes after the top of the hour. and coming up, a wild windstorm sends people running for cover. where tornadolike winds sent tents flying. hotels cracking down what's going to cost you more with your next room reservation. and it's one of the oldest new year's celebrations in the country. we are live at the mummers

so we're going to go live to wtxf reporter jennifer joyce. she is along the parade route for us with the latest. good morning, jennifer. >> reporter: good morning, heather. that's right, we're live in south philadelphia along second street which is also known as 2 street here in philly. this is where all of the mummers' clubhouses are. right behind me is the clubhouse. as you can see that banner reads "100 years." it's the 100th anniversary of that club in particular. but this age-old tradition is changing. the parade route in particular will be different this year. this year the mummer parade will start at city hall and head down to washington. that's the reverse of what it typically is. right now the mummers will be judged at 15th & jfk, that's right outside of city hall. they'll head south on broad street finishing up in south philadelphia. also this year, the parade route will be one-third of the length of what it typically is. and that's because of declining membership. and soaring costs that's

seriously hurting the mummers. the mummers parade here has been an official tradition since 1901. so these changes are not going over too well with a lot of people here in south philadelphia. again, that clubhouse in particular right across the way, 100 years. so they are used to what they are used to, that tradition. across the way you can see the barricades set up. it's still early. so we are expecting the mummers to be out here in maybe about 45 minutes to start getting their makeup on and costumes on as well. cheryl? >> jennifer joyce. thank you, jennifer. well, did you have a rough night? >> what the [ bleep ] happened last night? >> hey phil, am i missing a tooth? >> then you need to know these hangover dos and don'ts. here's what you should not do. hair of the dog, drinking more just postpones your hangover. coffee leads to more dehydration. and don't pop pain relievers if you haven't gone to bed.

the ultimate battle of the elements in wyoming. fire destroying a dozen businesses some the small town of du bois. while icicles hang from nearby buildings, firefighters braving subzero temperatures to battle the flames. but at 25 degrees below their houses and equipment started -- their hoses and equipment, excuse me, started to freeze up.

its drone and flying right into the flames of an erupting volcano in iceland. the lava exploding hundreds of feet into the air. it was so hot, it melted the camera but not the memory card. an ohio man enlists the help of a toddler to break into his laundromat. you can see him hoisting the child to disconnect surveillance cameras. public transportation was the site of scary moments last year. good samaritans in philadelphia coming to the rescue of this woman who narrowly escaped death when she fell onto the tracks. a similar story in l.a. where a blind man fell onto the tracks and was trapped for some 20 minutes before being rescued. and talk about a group effort. dozens of people coming to the aid of a man who apparently did not mind the gap. his leg got caught between the platform and the subway car, setting the wheels in motion for a flash mob rescue. panic inside a plane. video showing the moment a virgin plane is forced to make

an emergency landing. >> you must stay in the braced position until the aircraft stops completely. >> the plane's top wheels got stuck because of a technical glitch. elevators, the scene of a lot of drama this year. bee yonyonce beyonce's younger sister solange in an all-out brawl with jay-z. the family says they have problems and we're not different. ravens' star ray rice caught on tape viciously attacking his then-fiancee now-wife janae palmer. on the streets of russia, a driver capturing this truly bizarre scene. a real cast of characters going after this driver during a road rage incident. some say maybe this was staged. and just this week a would-be thief in australia having his plans backfire literally. the video shows him planting explosives in hopes of busting

workers hard at work clearing out a whole lot of people who were there celebrating the brand-new year. welcome. i'm heather childers. >> hi, everybody. i'm cheryl casone. thank you so much for starting 2015 with us. are you ready for a fresh start? out with the old, in with the new. cities all over the world ringing in the new year in style. >> and jackie joins us with a look at some of the best and the brightest celebrations. good morning, jackie. >> good morning ladies. everyone has their own tradition and idea of the best way to ring in the new year. i know you ladies do. nearly 1 million people packed the streets of new york city's times square as the famous ball dropped. a massive cascade of glitter confetti and fireworks filled the sky and of course a lot of smooching going on there. it was a cold night for folks in los angeles, but that didn't stop crowds from gathering to listen to music and watch a light show that spanned a 12-acre stretch between city hall and music center there. >> just everyone to be happy. >> get rich.

>> boston pulled out all the stops for the city's first night there. now in its 39th year tens of thousands of people crowded the downtown area to get a glimpse of some ice sculptures soak in some good tunes of course and marvel there at the fireworks. a beautiful fireworks display coming off the space needle in seattle. check that out. 20,000 thought to have gathered there in downtown to watch that spectacular. and a rainbow of lights lit up the sky in hong kong. a huge fireworks display over victoria harbor. 300,000 people coming out to celebrate. and not to be outdone london hosted its own magnificent fireworks show at the same time. and now that we're several hours into 2015 it's time to get cracking on those new year's resolutions. how are they coming? >> well, i'm going to wear silly glasses on live television. this is my new resolution. >> absolutely. you've got to start somewhere.

protesters in new york using the new year's celebration to have their voices heard. nearly 100 people marching from union square to midtown expecting to continue their demonstration in times square along with new year's revelers. but police not allowing them to enter. it was already packed with people. embattled new york mayor bill de blasio trying to make good with the nypd. with the mayor announcing a proposal to name two streets in brooklyn after officers wenjian liu and rafael ramos who were shot to death in their police cruiser on december 20th. it may not be enough though. another banner look at that, bashing de blasio, flown above the hudson river urging him to apologize to the nypd. extreme weather now, talk about a new year's surprise. it's a rare sight, real snow in southern california? more than 180 drivers had to be rescued after getting trapped on a highway.

just look at these frozen palm trees near san diego. >> that's amazing. and the rare snow also causing problems on the road in cottonwood, arizona. your neck of the woods. >> you never see this. >> but is this arctic blast over? maria molina tracking it all in the weather center. maria? >> good morning. hello, everyone at home. that storm system on the move now. we're seeing some areas of snow across parts of the rockies and then across portions of texas and also into oklahoma. we have some moisture ahead of it, and it's actually freezing on contact with the surfaces. so we're looking at some freezing rain coming down out here and some concerns for icing. so we do have a number of winter storm warnings in effect across parts of texas. winter weather advisories through oklahoma. and then across portions of the rockies. those warnings are still in effect as well because of some heavy snowfall for the higher elevations. outside of where that storm system is, though conditions look much better. travel looks good across the east coast from boston to miami. and across the midwest, quiet right now. but over the next several days, expect a round of winter weather

from that same storm system. that's it. over to you. weather caused major problems and delays in the search for crashed airasia flight 8501. recovery crews from around the world including the u.s. scouring the java sea looking for debris and human remains in the doomed flight. rough seas making it nearly impossible for drivers to explore possible wreckage. so far only 8 of 162 bodies have been recovered. at the stroke of midnight, many american businesses given something to worry about. the terrorism risk insurance act has expired. congress unable to renew the program by the end of 2014. it is meant to protect businesses in the event of terror attacks. a concern for the super bowl, actually. we spent $400 billion on the stealth planes but as of right now, they can't even fire a gun. these new f-35 joint strike fighters already in test flights, and they'll join the marine corps fleet next year. but the software for their gun cannons won't be ready for four

years. the planes aren't totally useless, though. they can still shoot off bombs and missiles. what is in store for washington in the new year? doug luzader taking out his crystal balls and making his predictions as both sides of the aisle promise some bipartisanship agreements. >> reporter: the first big date to watch is january 6th, when republicans take over the senate, giving them complete control of congress. it's something the president is already bracing for. >> the question's going to be are we able to separate out those areas where we disagree and those areas where we agree? i think there are going to be some tough fights on areas where we disagree. >> reporter: later in the month on january 20th, the president will deliver the state of the union address. but some republicans in the audience this year may be a little distracted because many of them will be thinking about what's happening just four days after that. on january 24th, it's the first

real 2016 gop cattle call for candidates in iowa. >> how are you? >> reporter: so far former florida governor jeb bush has gone the furthest toward actually launching a campaign. on the democratic side, we may still be waiting at that point for hillary clinton to decide whether she'll confirm widely held expectations and throw her hat in the ring. the immigration issue will roar back to life as we approach february 27th when the department of homeland security's budget runs dry. and that number will pale ino the debt ceiling which was suspended through march 15th. after that it kicks back in. and come august we're likely back to iowa for the state's sometimes-consequential straw poll which could scramble the gop presidential field. and that is right before we get to september 30th when the government is set to run out of money yet again. congress will have to pass a new funding bill. if they don't, we could wind up careening toward 2016 amidst a government shutdown.

and just one more thing to look forward to in what we hope will otherwise be a very happy new year. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. and speaking of new laws to talk about in nevada. students who are considered habitually truant might have to wait to get a driver's license or have their current one taken away. gun owners in pennsylvania now able to more easily challenge local firearms ordinances in court. in nebraska veterans and spouses of disabled veterans will be given a hiring preference when applying for government jobs. and the most bizarre of the bunch, in new york, it will be illegal to take a selfie with a tiger, a lion or any other big cat because we know that you were, of course, dying to do that. >> okay. new year's day means college bowl games. see the biggest matchups today. number two ranked oregon is taking on number three florida state in the rose bowl. that's at 4:30. while number one alabama faces off with number four ohio state

starting today, two of the largest hotel chains in the world making it harder to cancel reservations. so heads up, hilton and marriott now requiring guests to cancel by midnight a day before they arrive to avoid getting hit with a fee. many hotels currently allow people to cancel as late as 6:00 p.m. on the night of arrival. the hotels say that the change makes more rooms available for those needing last-minute accommodations. apple is getting sued for shrinking storage space, and it could mean you could get money back. a class action lawsuit filed this week accusing apple of not telling people its operating system could fill up a quarter of the storage space on some devices. a lawsuit as the software upgrade made 8 and 16-gig phones inoperable. they're encouraging users to buy new devices or extra storage space as a fix. forget making a resolution for yourself. facebook founder mark zuckerberg needs you to pick one for him. every year he commits himself to one personal challenge, and now he needs some ideas apparently.

some of his past resolutions include meet someone new each day, or only eat meat from animals that he has killed for himself. do you have an idea for zuckerberg? post it to his facebook wall. how about quit making so many changes to facebook? >> yeah, i like that. fix your privacy policy. time for your "5 @ 5." number five "captain america." in fourth, "x-men" pulling in $746 million. angelina jolie's "maleficent," third. surprise megahit "guardians of the galaxy" scoring $772 million at the international box office. missed that one. and by a huge margin, "transformers revenge of the fallen" claims the ground of highest grossing movie of the year with just over $1 billion. and i saw none of those. >> i wanted to see "guardians of the galaxy."

talk about arriving in style. a flight forced to make an emergency landing when a pregnant woman goes into labor. the plane flying from san francisco to minneapolis diverted to from san francisco to minneapolis diverted to salt lake city the woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy. they got to the hospital. and the rest of the plane made their way to minneapolis only an hour behind schedule. a utah woman with no legal experience accused with stealing an attorney's identity opening a law office and representing at least one person in court. she even hired a bar certified attorney for her fake firm. she was busted after a utah court contacted the real lawyer about the case. her motive is a mystery. it is the morning after a
