tomorrow night mitch mcconnell is here. set your dvrs. what do you think will be different 25 years in the future? thanks for watching. the honorable john a. boehner is duly elected speaker of the house of representatives for the 114th congress. >> big drama in the house of representatives today as john boehner is re-elected speaker. >> we're glad and humbled to begin anew as servants of the people's house. >> we'll hear from two republicans who challenged him for that post. >> john boehner's a nice guy. what we're lacking is political leadership. >> in november the speaker had said we were going to fight tooth and nail. >> and bill clinton gets caught up in an excrony's sexual lawsuit. what's his connection? ann coulter is here tonight with the details. the war on cops continues as
7:01 pm
hollywood liberal bill maher makes disgusting comments about the nypd. all that plus former presidential hopeful rick santorum is here to tell us about his 2016 aspirations. welcome to "hannity." so the 114th congress was officially sworn in today. republicans now control both the house and the senate. and john boehner was re-elected as speaker. here with the very fox news' own mike emmanuel. a lot of drama there. >> sean, good evening. a lot of tension on the house floor earlier today. but after earning 216 of the 408 votes cast, the house clerk announced john boehner had won re-election as speaker. >> therefore the honor able john a. boehner of the state of ohio, having received a majority of the votes cast is duly elected speaker of the house of representatives for the 114th
7:02 pm
congress. >> three conservative congressmen challenged him daniel web sister with 12 votes, lou louie gohmert and ted yoho. >> people are calling us today they've been calling us since this morning saying we're going to support somebody other than mr. boehner. you'll see the numbers grow. >> conservative critics rick boehner who are accepting the bipartisan bicameral package congress passed before christmas. they wanted to fight more on immigration and funding obama care. once it was resolved boehner laid out his vision for the new congress. >> we'll begin our work on this common ground taking enough measures to restore the hours of middle class workers and help small businesses hire more of our veterans. >> you can expect much of the early focus to be on passing the keystone xl pipeline project which has been much studied.
7:03 pm
also some focus to be on repealing the last popular parts of obama care, testing to see how often president obama intends to use his veto pen. >> mike emanuel on capitol hill thang thank you so much. today's vote for speaker did disappoint me for a number of reasons. for starters, the elected representatives, they didn't listen to you the american people. according to a brand new poll only 25% of republican voters wanted them to re-elect john boehner as their house speaker. guess what? 60% wanted someone else. during his time in my view he's been too timid and weak to stand up to the president and the democrats. he seems scared almost paranoid of being blamed for the government shutdowns and he's not willing to use -- and this is a key point -- the constitutional power and authority of the purse and we've seen devastating results.
7:04 pm
the day that boehner became the speaker of the house, on january 5th, 2011, the national debt was more than $14 trillion. now that debt is a whopping $18 trillion. that's more than a 29% increase. that to me is not leadership. i want a conservative leader who will stand on principle who is willing to fight. republicans, if you're smart you'll push forward, stop robbing our kids blind, future generations blind. we need to balance the budget. we need a leader who will repeal and replace obama care. in the cromnibus bill john boehner just funded obama care for another fiscal year. we also need as a national security concern, we need somebody who will secure the borders first. also i want a fire and brimstone message coming from every republican. look at north dakota. look at all the jobs that they created. look at the economic development.
7:05 pm
america needs to be energy independent. you know what? that creates jobs, that helps national security. and lastly, i'd like to see someone offer kids that are in failing or mediocre schools a way out. failing schools give them school choice. up to this point i don't think boehner has been up to the job. i hope i'm wrong. i hope with a new senate majority this gives him an opportunity, the american people have given him the blessing of power. it is a gift. i hope he uses it well and i wish him the best. joining me now two men who challenged the speaker louie gohmert and ted yoho is with us. >> great to see and hear you, sean. >> you guys came pretty close, i think closer than some people thought. louie, i told you when we first talked about this behind the scenes that i thought this was an uphill battle. what's your reaction to what happened today? >> it was an uphill battle. originally we were just trying to get people to vote for
7:06 pm
anybody but the speaker so that we can get this thrown to a conference and then have somebody we could all agree on to get some new blood into the position so that it would help us keep our promises, exactly like you've talked about. and the idea was pitched by jim weinstein, thomasy we need someone declared as a candidate so no one could say nobody was a candidate so we had to vote for him as speaker. then they said, why don't you get out there? because then it becomes boehner versus gohmert. so i want to say this is a real hero here. ted came in and announced -- >> i don't think john boehner's thinking that right now. i think he doesn't like either of you or me. >> well, let me tell you daniel webster came in today. he's a real hero. i'm trying to get it confirmed but i heard that he might have
7:07 pm
just got picked with nugent and that -- >> i'm running out of time. let me go to ted. what i think -- i love what reagan said. bold colored differences. there's an opportunity here with the new senate to put bill after bill after bill on obama's desk. energy independence, key stone pipeline, if you like your plan you can keep your plan, secure america's borders first there's your solution. i'd like to see republicans lay out that agenda, challenge the president, do you think that's a good strategy? do you thing john boehner is up to that job? >> i think it's a great strategy. our goal is to work with the senate to bring out health care -- not just repeal but replacement, put it back in the hands of the doctors and the patients where it needs to be. challenge the president on overstepping the constitution and let him know that we'll hold him accountable. he was elected to faithfully execute the laws of the land, national security agency that you just brought up and starts

with keystone. dpas prices are down now because of the private sector. we need to keep those down. then tax reforms so businesses come back to america creating jobs for americans on our soil to increase the living standards of those people then bring up poll sis and bills based on merit, not on politics. >> louie, i'll go back to you. in spite of the vote that you guys wanted to be different today, there's a huge opportunity here. >> huge. >> and that is to lay out an agenda. i think if i were to ask the average american where republicans stand on issues how they're going to solve 50 million americans in poverty, food stamps 92 million americans not working, they can't give an answer. isn't part of the job now to explain that there's another way to govern besides the 7 1/2 trillion dollars of new debt that obama's given the country? >> there absolutely is and that's part of the job that needs to be explained but not just explained but needs to be
7:09 pm
done. we need to be passing those bills. if nugent and webster are being punished, then we'll have another fight and it will be nasty. we can't let that stand if they'll be punished. >> i'd like the weigh in on that. because the american people sent us up here to do a job. they wanted new leadership. we brought forth the movement, members of congress voted the way their districts wanted to, and to be held in jeopardy for that or retribution is wrong because that would be something you would expect in china, cuba or russia or in a communist country to when you have a voice of dissension you'd be punished but where we honor free speech and a constitution that protects that, we should not have to go through that. >> both of you, yes or no has boehner reached out to you guys? do you think he will reach out to you? because i think that would be a smart thing for him to do. >> louie you go first. >> when he came into the chamber, there wasn't enough
7:10 pm
seats because of so many people were in the chamber and so, yes i reached out my hand to him he reached out his hand to me. >> all right ted? >> that was all the reaching out. >> sean, i looked at him in the eye after the vote i said mr. speaker, congratulations, you won. i look forward to working with you to make this the best congress. and he said. >> he said, i look forward to working with you. >> that's healthy. meeting with obama, at least he can meet with conservatives too. thank you. now the white house says republicans supporting steve scalise says a lot about the gop and their values, but is the administration hypocritical? we'll prove that point coming up next. also ann coulter and rudy giuliani in studio. later we need your help with the question of the day. what is the first piece of legislation you want the republicans to send to president obama? i hope they send hundreds of pieces and put it right on his desk. trust dulcolax® for dependable relief.

welcome back to "hannity." the white house is now weighing in on the controversy surrounding a 12-year-old speech made by the majority whip steve scalise. ed henry. >> democrats have had their own troubles over the years. we all knew about the late senator robert byrd who had been a member of the kkk earlier in his life. he renounced that later. folks tended to look the other way after his mistake. with steve scalise, what's interesting is this event, as you say, from 12 years ago, though, we're in a much different era now. he had first seemed to acknowledge that he had spoken to a white supremacist group, then seemed to back pedal saying maybe he spoke to another group in the same holtztel but not the
7:14 pm
white supremacist group. josh earnest when asked about it yesterday pounced on it because he said this is a republican party who talked about difbers fiing and instead now is elevating steve scalise to a very senior leadership position. listen to earnest. >> it's ultimately their decision to make. but there is no arguing that who republicans decide to elevate into a leadership position says a lot about what the conference's priorities and values are, and i mean ultimately mr. scalise reportedly described himself as david duke without the baggage. so it will be up to republicans to decide what they says about their conference. >> there's a broader context here. the president today sitting down not with the new republican leaders in congress. he's planning to do that next tuesday, but instead sitting down with governors of both parties suggesting he can go around congress, talking about more executive action also issuing today two veto threats
7:15 pm
over the keystone pipeline and also over potential changes to his health care law. so what we're seeing is a president both with that rhetoric from josh earnest and the actions from the president on veto threats and the like, executive action in the days ahead is that a president who has talked about cooperating with this republican congress is now actually acting in a very confrontational way because he's dealing with a whole new political dynamic on the hill. >> speaking of the late robert byrd of west virginia democrats seem to have forgotten his past because byrd was a former high level member of the ku klux klan. he made these comments back to tony snow in 2001. >> there are white [ bleep ], i understand a lot of white [ bleep ] in my time use that word. >> he received a pass because he was what a democrat? hear what president obama had to say about the late senator at his memorial back in 2010.
7:16 pm
>> he was a senate icon, a party leader, he was an elder statesman. and he was my friend. we know there are things he said and things he did that he came to regret. i remember talking about that the first time i visited with him. he said there are things i regretted in my youth. you may know that. and i said, none of us are absent some regrets senator. >> none of us are absent some regrets. here with reaction fox news political analyst juan williams when josh earnest says this says a lot about the gop's values, what does that say about the democrats taking on a former klans member? >> well, i think that what you got right now is pure politics being played. the fact is steve scalise is
7:17 pm
nicked up and he's hurting right now, so it's not only josh earnest, it's the democratic national campaign committee that sent out a release to 30 gop-held districts saying does the party want to stand with a man who goes to a white supremacist meeting, convention to rally voters. so you can see that there are new republicans in this new house that we seated today who are nervous about having steve scalise there for that reason but also because is he going to be able to raise money as the majority whip. you know, are corporations, political action committees willing to do business with guys who has this past? i happen to know steve scalise because he son worked with him at the republican study committee. i think the world of steve scalise so i don't have a problem with him personally but in terms of washington, they've got a lot of republicans who are

let obama decide with what little time he has left, does he want to have a positive legacy or be president no and just block one reform after another many of which american people want and which will pass with bipartisan votes. >> juan williams with immigration, keystone energy, securing the borders all these issues and on obama care the polls are with the american people, not with the president. if the republicans follow that strategy, does that hurt or help the democrats? >> it doesn't hurt the democrats especially if it's the case that most americans have a lower opinion of congress in general and think that congress is broken if they don't get anything done. i think part of the challenge for republicans is showing that they are able to get something done and i might say sean i don't think your numbers are right. the american people want something done on immigration. they are for a path to citizenship. they don't call it amnesty. that's what most republicans call it though. >> the borders secure first.

welcome back to "hannity." all everyone seems to be talking about is the year of the presidential election. we want to invite you to make this program to be the place where all potential candidates can come and make the case to you, our viewers so you can make the best informed decision on election day. if you want to be a candidate, consider this an open invitation, even democrats. on that note there is a note that former senator rick santorum is meeting next week with some old advisers. does that mean he's running? joining me is rick santorum. are you ready to get back into that rat race again? >> well, you know, i'm seriously looking at it, sean. obviously, i've got a lot of things that i think are very very important to this country and that you know, we need a candidate in 2016 that's going to unite america.
7:49 pm
we've had the greatest divider as president since i can't remember. we need someone to start getting things done that's going to help average, ordinary working americans have a better opportunity at their life. >> there seems to be a divide. what i, for example speaker boehner were ever to come on the program, and i don't think he's too fond of me right now, or if i had an opportunity, i would say to him, he should unite tea party conservatives like myself and more moderate republicans. there's a lot of low hanging fruit that can help the country energy independence, secure borders, a solution for obama care, balanced budgets, these are simple things that would thing every republican would agree on. do you agree with that? >> i do. i think we have to be positive. we have to have a message out there that not only unites moderate republicans but tea party republicans but also can bring some democrat votes.
7:50 pm
one example, i saw this article today that the folks up at harvard are not happy about obama care being visited on the medical programs up atted on the harvard. why doesn't the congress pass a bill that says what the president did by executive order. pass a bill and if you have a plan you can keep it and grandfather in every plan that's out there now. i guarantee you a bunch of democrats would vote for it, tea party folks would vote for it, it would be the way to start off on the right vote. their policies now and want to keep them. >> i have that article in front of me. all of the professors helped advise the administration are in an uproar about their own policies >> yes. >> maybe they didn't read the
7:51 pm
plan before they passed it. >> yes. i mean well you saw the saw the incidents extended to har yard as it turns out because she didn't know what was in this plan. let's do something you and i can get behind something that can help harvard professors if you have your plan you can keep it. >> i'm sure they care what i think. >> i don't think that is clever. it's the president made the promise. put the bill on his desk. >> he did. >> let's see where he stands i think there are many opportunities i'd like to see republicans take advantage of. you served in the senate and by my count 12, 13, maybe 14 candidates, governors, ex-governors senators maybe congressmen in there. how do you separate yourself from the pack? what will -- how do you beat jeb
7:52 pm
bush? marco rubio? scott walker? ted cruz? how do you distinguish yourself in that field? >> yes. a message. you know? that is how, people saying you're sort of the last guy standing against romney. there is a reason for that. we had a strong message that appealed to working americans people who believed energy independence and jobs created by the energy industry in this country and opportunities that low-priced energy will create in manufacturing and construction that will help working americans that connected with people. we have been talking about it ever since 2012 a did a book last year called blue collar conservatives if we're going to be successful we have to make sure the middle of america is strong and healthy. i support the republican party
7:53 pm
and we need more than that. we need to make sure everyone is participating and that we need to be not just pro growth party but pro worker party. so we've put forth ideas to make sure that every american all working americans who want to work and support themselves and families are going to have an opportunity to be successful again. >> a lot of people are suffering. that is my push be the party that solves problems what do you think you'll announce that you'll run? unless you want to do it now? >> well, several months i mean, you know we're still sort of getting around. i had a meeting today for a swearing in a couple good friends in the pennsylvania legislature. and met with folks here today we'll be meeting all over the country, talking to people and that to me this is, we have to have a unifying message as republicans and have to have
7:54 pm
something going to bring america together. that is the next few months that is what i'll be testing. >> rick santorum, we'll be waiting and watching. and we'll open the air waves to any candidate that wants to run. thanks when we come back, we need your help advice on how to well point the new congress in the right direction. that will be our question of the day, straight ahead. but when i started having back pain my sister had to come help. i don't like asking for help. i took tylenol but i had to take six pills to get through the day. so my daughter brought over some aleve. it's just two pills, all day! and now, i'm back! aleve. two pills. all day strong, all day long. and now introducing aleve pm for a better am.
