three men burst through the door of a newsroom known for satirical cartoons. >> as we have seen since our time on the ground in paris a huge police presence. 500 police were dispatched in a massive manhunt and search for three gun men who burst in the satirical news office. 12 dead. top staffers of the newspaper and two police men. they were shooting and shooting. allah ak- bar described god is great. they were well trained. 11 injured and one of the policemen who was killed executed on the street. they fled in one car hijacked another a mile away and a shootout with police and we are told from our sources here
10:03 am
that they have now disappeared. they have fled to the tough suburbs and housing projects that surround paris, a high crime rate there and a high muslim population there as well. this is called a terror attack by the president of france the worst in decades and the target is obvious that the newspaper run critical cartoons of islamist and mohammed. and they targeted other politicians. they are a satirical will newspaper and that is well loved by the people here. the entire city is in shot and mammoth protest. and they are highly public figures and hard to describe a comparable publicication probably national lampoon in the old days or comics on tv poking fun at politicians and et cetera, it is rocking the nation and the police and i

know the french policemen. they are all over the metro pollittan area trying to find these guys. >> thank you, gregg. snrs president obama condemned the attack in paris after meeting with vice-president joe biden and secretary of state john kerry. ed henry is reporting live from the white house. the president made the statement in the oval office and the french president is calling it terrorism, what about president obama? >> reporter: good to see you. the president is calling this an act of terror. interesting because he wanted to be cheerleading the economy today and heading to detroit and talk about the economic recovery ahead of the state of the union address. but reality has intervened and terror has intervened and so the president as you say gathered top cabinet secretaries like john kery and addressed the
10:05 am
had this to say. >> i thought it would be appropriate for me to express my deepest sympathy for the people of paris and france for the terrible terrorist attack that occurred earlier today. i think that all of us recognize that france is one of our oldest allies and one of our strongest allies. >> reporter: bottom line, the president reached out to the president of france. they have not connected yet. that is understandable obviously as the manhunt gregg was talking about continues in paris. the french president will be addressing the french people in the next now hours. president obama expects to connect with the french president to make sure they are on the same page. >> how much fear at the white house that this kind of thing
10:06 am
can spread to america. >> reporter: they don't know the nature of the attack whether it was al-qaeda or isis or offshoot group but the bottom line, they do acknowledge that the u.s. and france have been working together to take on isis with air strikes and you have republicans like kelly a yote saying that there is a long fear that the terrorist have western passports and could easily spread this terror. >> the problem is we have a visa waiver program with france. they could travel to america. >> reporter: jay johnson was on capitol hill and addressed the reporters and said they don't want to jump to conclusions, but expressed concern about the evolving nature of the terrorist threats not only to the u.s. but allies as well, jon.

>> thank you. >> and smaller attacks on the lone wolf variety in france. but this appears to be work of a small and hilo trained cell. they are looking for answers today. johnathon chancellor is in the defense of democracy and former analyst in the treasury department. john, you check out what is happening on line and after the event like this, what are you reading today? >> one of the things we are watching right now is a possible connection of the al-qaeda of the araban peninsula. it is based in yemen. and they have threatened this publicication in the past and reports indicating that perhaps there could have been one gunmen and made mention they hailed from al-qaeda in yemen. that is one lead we are looking at and we continue to watch the islamic state involvement and
10:08 am
recently they put out a cartoon that about the head of isis and many fighters that hailed from france. and these are the top two suspects. no one has taken responsibility yet. and so it is still wait and see. >> radical islam targeted the press in europe over the past two years, what makes this attack different than previous attacks and what makes it consistent with the attacks that we have seen in the past? >> the history of this goes back, i would take it back to 1989, the fata issued by iran to go after salmon rushdie that sparked mass violence in europe. and fast forward to the last decade, there was the killing and stabbing of a film makeener the netherlands and multiple
10:09 am
attacks on this danish publication on juliannes post for their cartoons of the prophet mohammed. we have seen an attempt by jihaddist to quell free speech in europe for sometime. that stands out to me because of how professional it was. they are well trained people and not the kind of guys that did a little bit of work in the paint ball realm. they are hardened and trained. >> certainly sound dangerous. >> there's been a series was smaller attacks that authorities in france have not linked altogether. but had some raising eyebrows about whether or not they were motivated by radical islam over the last several weeks. a security analyst came on our show who say the french are guilty of jihad denial and went on to say this. >> they are trying to narrow down the definition of what
10:10 am
qualifies to terrorism. are you a member of a terrorist group they don't have membership cards and you believe in the ideology and adopt and act accordingly and that is what we are seeing. >> what do you think of that johnathon. >> certainly ryan is talking about lone wolf attacks and quite possible or problemable though three attacks were motivated by militant islam in some way. and people call out god is great before carrying out the attacks. but i think the broader point here france finds itself in a difficult situation. they have a significant muslim population and significant numbers in that population that are radical and trying to make sure they don't inflame the population and try to carry out counter terrorism operations to prevent the attacks we see today. their security is professional. but the public policies are at
10:11 am
times a bit timid. >> john, a final question for you. we tell them that it is a magazine or newspaper that shoes satirical cartoons about all sorts of things. they had a cartoon about virgin mary and jesus christ. but no one is showing the cartoons. we haven't shown them on air and i wonder if that is the right decision, what do you think about that? >> i think it is not the right decision. we have seen decisions like this made in this country and europe. and decision by comleddy central not to air a -- comedy central of the prophet mohammed not to air. and yale university not publishing cartoons that were run in europe for theseerancy. what we are letting the islamist do is quell free speech.
10:12 am
the right thing to do is make sure they are published and we will not cower. >> thank you. >> so what is sharlee ebdo. it was first published in 1969 and known for incendiary headlines and cartoons. they reprinted the cartoons of the prophet mohammed and the magazine was sued. and that suit was rejected by the french court. the paper offices were fire boomed the day after it posted a cariateur of mohammed. it forced france to close schools. >> and we'll keep you updated on

>> work is getting underway with the u.s. senate and both cham bers of congress in the hands of the gochlt one of the first items is approving the key stone pipeline which the president said he will veto if it reaches his desk. mitch mcconnell will call on all law makers to work together. >> so yes, the america people elected divided government but
10:17 am
that doesn't mean they don't want us to accomplish anything. if there is a will to do so we can come together to achieve great things and president obama is interested in historic achievement of his own. this could be his time as well. >> we have a staff writer for the washington free beacon. thank you for being here and happy new year to you. nhappy new year to you as well. >> it was five years ago, that mitch mcconnell said that his chief proprietary, was preventing i should say the reelection of barak obama. and now he seems to be holding out an olive branch to the president that after all was elected. is it effective. >> that's the tone that mcconnell has had. even though he is frustrated with the white house suggest that he will veto the key stone.
10:18 am
mcconnell wants to work with the democrats and work with the president. but that's going to happen if the president works with them. and they do have to have democrats work, with thel. they have 54 seats but not 60. and they need democrat support on a lot of things to get done and that's what mcconnell is saying. obviously the last election was a vote against president obama and the american people wanted to stall his agenda but they also say they want to see the government work and mcconnell feels it is their responsibility to make sure they are doing that and staying conservative and leading a center right congress and making sure the government is working because the public is frustrated with it in the past couple of years. >> he pointed with the fact that president reagan worked with democratic legislature to pass
10:19 am
social security reform. and this president is more vocal than any i have seen in blaming congress for what he sees as the lack of progress to get legislation passed in this country. is there any sign of that changing? >> not necessarily. the republican congress has looked at key stone and put forward a proposal and changing the work requirement for providing obama care and changing that hour week and upping it ten hours and the white house and president said they would not support those. that is not necessarily the start they want to see. key stone had 60 votes and you know senator joe manchin saying this is not the way we should have started out if you want to work together. it is it a wait and see game. in the past they haven't done well in working together. president obama is supposed to
10:20 am
meet with congressional leaders on tuesday. republicans are certainly hoping to work with democrats on things like reforming the tax code and look at trade legislation and bipartisan support for. they only have 54 votes and they have to wait and see and they will need democratic help to move the things. >> polls indicate that key stone is popular among the american people and if the president vetoes that legislation what is he saying to folks in america? >> the key stone is a political hot button issue and something that republicans will tell you that is a job creator and democrats think it causes problems for a environment. it is a rallying piece. and the majority of the americans support it. but if he doesn't pass it that would cause problems for him in the way the public perceives
10:21 am
him. mcconnell is right. one of the messages that voters sent. they are frustrated with the things that the administration is or not doing and they are unhappy with congress as well. and they are going to have to meet in the middle to change a lot of things if they want to get the public on their side. >> the president so often blames the congress for what he sees, as a lack of progress on various things and if he veto key stones, it doesn't seem like the american people will be with him on that. >> you bet. >> and 12 people murdered and others fighting for their lives after a horrifying terrorist attack in paris. the hunt for gun men at large. >> and days of down arrows and now seeing a bit of an upswing in the dow, that's next.

>> france's terror alert raised to the highest level as security forces search for three gunmen who escaped in the streets of paris after storming the office of a satirical newspaper. they asked for people by name and targeting editors and cartoonist and gunning them down in cold blood. two u.s. police officers also died. the u.s. department of homeland security has not raised the alert but watching the situation closely. >> after days of losses the stock market bouncing back. we have our sister network fox business. nicole is joining us from the floor of the new york stock exchange. why does it look better today than yesterday?

>> a manhunt underway in paris. the masked men stormed the office of a satirical newspaper and killed 12 people before escaping. french authorities increasing security to the highest possible level. our next guest said it could be france's worst terrorist attack in 50 years.
10:32 am
con, good to have you here. what are the french authorities telling you about who is responsible? >> well, the prime suspects are some form of islamic terrorist groups. the killers said they were from al-qaeda in yemen before carrying out the killings and there were reporting of shouting allah ak bar, god is great before carrying out the murders. and the french authorities are looking very much in that direction. the big question mark, yemen head nothing to do with france and people are puzzled that a terrorist group from yemen should be involved in france because of the al-qaeda terrorist groups are linked and they have a common economy, ie the west. those are the early indication so far in the investigation.
10:33 am
>> there are reports that the magazine was under police protection and that was recently pulled. we are getting conflicting stories on that. can you confirm that? >> i am able to confirm that point. one of the cartoonist who drou the original offending cartoon was supposed to be under police protection and furthermore in the run up to christmas and the holy season there were isolated lone wolf attacks in france. and a knife attack on a policemen saying the security and authorities in france were already on a state of high alert before this attack and of course, as i wrote earlier for the telegraph this is one of the worst attacks they suffered in 50 years and i think the french authorities will be focused indeed on any type of
10:34 am
threat against french citizens coming from the islamic centered terrorist groups. >> it showed a tight cluster of bullet holes as the attackers fought off the police that responded. whether they were firing an ak 47. they kept that cluster very tight. and clearly these are people who had experience with weaponry? >> yes, john and i think as people examine the nature of this attack, you will see that this is a highly sophisticated operation. we are used to islamist suicide bombers carrying out
10:35 am
indiscriminate attacks and don't care who they killed. but today the killers anyhow who they were targeting and when to target and they had a get away strategy. normally this kind of inspired attacks, usually they end up dead or commit jihad they had a get away plan. and that deep eps the mystery and organization behind the attack. they got the target they wanted and they wanted the editors and cartoonist who were responsible for the offending issue and they were all killed in the attack and the attackers knew precisely what they were doing. >> it took place in the editorial meeting of the magging gene underway and they may have had knowledge of the schedule inside of that office?
10:36 am
>> they clearly had been following this closely before they made the attack. as i said before they were happy to announce before they killed the journalist involved that they were from al-qaeda in yemen. they clearly hadap agenda and knew what they were about. the other surprising thing they made a clean get away. killing two policemen. one as he lay defenseless on the ground. >> thank you. >> there is an outpouring of support on line in the wake of the terrorist attack in france. one is showing solidarity with the magazine. charlie ebdou is the name of the newspaper on place.

>> the new york police department upon reacting to the attack. other land marks here in manhattan, new york police commissioner weighing in on the evolving nature of the attacks. we are seeing a difference in the level of type. watching the events in paris, they are not amateurs. they are trained professionals on the mission. >> the nypd has a detective stationed in parand is that official is monitoring the situation and keeping the department up-to-date on what is going on. >> right now, second blast of bitter cold air making its way in the great lakes and chicago cancelling public school. they are grappling with

10:43 am
what can you tell us about the investigation. are police saying anything about the progress? >> no we don't know anything. we know there are 2 or 3 terrorist, but they are in will streets of paris or in the suburbs. we don't know anything more. >> charlie ebdou. tell us about the role the magazine play in the discussion of the day? >> charlie ebdou is a magazine and just in the uk or u.s. you are catching. and it is a magazine with only cartoons, and really they talk about sex religion and there is no limit there is no limit
10:44 am
and that's why they are so important and so important in france, because they are the symbol. they are are the symbol of the freedom of speech in france. >> what is your sense of the mood in paris and in france right now? is it anger or fear? does one prenom dominant. >> no. it is not fear for two reasons. first, france is threatened by terrorist for several years. for example, two years ago, the building of charlie ebdou was burned by terrorist and we have lots of threats and another
10:45 am
example in the february of france, there was an explosion. and so we don't we don't fear anything i think. and the second reason is in fact it is a great symbol in france, just like your 4 or 5 famous, die together. and so the feeling in france is first emotion. not fear. >> i know that the u.s. offered any kind of support it can to the government there in paris. alex thank you very much for sharing your thoughts from paris. >> you're welcome. >> turning to a little health news. new report from the centers for

disease control has a stark warning about america's alcohol consumption. alcohol poisoning kills six people a day on average. most victims are between 35 and 64 years old and three out of four of them are men. joe shrink is running the recovery program. and doctor, it is great to have you both. that demo grafk may be surprising to them. you think of college age americans and not necessarily middle aged. what do you make of the demo? >> as people get older they can't do things they used to do when they were younger. like skying or running and we are a culture where alcohol is acceptable that this binge pattern drink suggest pervasive in all demo grafks and certainly older people. and the thing that was
10:47 am
interesting, it did not include other medications and when we are taking other medications and said don't drink on this, that is a serious warning and it can result in these tragic losses. >> interesting how do you do i from alcohol poisoning and what is happening to your body? >> there is a number of reasons, but in these cases, these are people who are at high levels and they suppress their breathing and decrease the heart greatment and they aspirate and vomit. >> the thought of getting to that level for anyone is just shocking, and really quite sad, joe. you mentioned though, if you drink with other drugs. i was looking to put this number in context. six people do i every day on alcohol poiszonning and -- i am
10:48 am
sorry, 1300 that die from cigarette smoking and alcohol is lower than that and sometimes alcohol gets a free pass when it comes to a dick. >> we talk a lot about prescription drug abuse but look the other way at alcohol. it is a dangerous substance. and it kills a lot of sxeem rates of alcohol use rise, so do all kinds of social problems. domestic violence and sexual assault and petty crimes and we don't hold accountable. and it is low tax. and the distilled industry keeps the studies low where people don't know about them. if we want to talk about the intoxication problem in america. >> you think taxes should be raised on disstilled spirits. >> when taxes are raised use goes down and when use goes down
10:49 am
so do the six people dying a day would decloin if taxes were raised. >> what do you think about that? >> i don't believe in taxation as a form of punishment so i disagree but what we are all missing is the over all picture. this is the tip of the iceberg. 88000 people a year die from alcohol. alcohol- related problems and that is much big are than 2000. this is a surprising number and 230 billion that it cost us a year. >> dr. thompson we so the public announcement commercials for smokers and people trying to breathe and it is it hard to watch on television. is that effective in the medical community to watch how they are drinking. what would it take? >> jenna, i think it is time to
10:50 am
deglamorize the alcohol industry. we did. that you don't remember gretta garbo and dean mart and i know all of the guys smoking and it was garbough and bogie. they were smoking. it was glamorous. we focused on that, and the smoking has gone way down. now we have two people at a big party out in the back smoking. wouldn't it be awesome if we had only two binge drinkers and two smokers in the back and everybody else was educated and they realized they could still go out and have a good time and they don't have to abuse either cigarettes or alcohol. >> it's great to have both of your perspectives. we're up against a hard break, so i have to leave it there. thank you for joining us today. >> thanks, jenna lee. authorities in france are sifting through new intelligence right now as the internet chatter on the paris attack points to one specific group. the latest on the investigation ahead. ow i have an 810 fico score, thanks to the tools and help on experian.com. and your big idea is
