journalist and two police officers. and this is how it ended today. >> is it is an explosion. >> that's one location. explosions and the kouachi brothers stormed out of a printing facility where they were holding a hostage and firing guns in a security force that was watch anything waiting and fired back and killed them. in a kocher grocery store police took out a third hostage taker who was threaten to move in on his "brothers". we are learning according to the reports that four hostages may have been killed there at the take over. now questions about the suspects and the mysterious woman who is called a fourth suspect. we have live fox team coverage. ed henrow is live in the white

house with reaction. we'll start with gregg who live in paris. >> reporter: it was a dramatic ending to a dramatic day. coordination on the side of the terrorist and coordination it would seem on the side of the police as well and leading to a mixed result and a successful conclusion and in at the very lost, the three suspected terrorist will no longer do any harm. it started northeast of paris in the printing company where the two main suspects in the deadly shootout in the paris newspaper office, holed up after hijacking another car with one hostage. they had ak 47s and rocket launchers on their side. and the french authorities had 1500 troops and police and counsellor terrorism officers on
10:03 am
the other side waiting to go in. at the same time in paris on the eastern side of the city, there was another hostage- taking. this is the suspect that was believed to be responsible of a killing of a french policewoman. he stormed the kosher delli. and it was believed he killed four when he went in with his own ak 47. he said he would kill the people inside their if the other location was stormed. it was stormed by the french police and the cry of martyrdom which the two suspects put out earlier in the day, that was achieved. they came out with guns blasting and they died. luckily one hostage was able to get out unharmed and at the the same time fearing that something bad could go down in the other

location the french police moved in and that hostage taker was taken. they saw as many as 6 or 10 hostages leave the location unharmed and they put out the word, we have done the job. but then they went in and had grim news. first four people killed, we believe it happen when the hostage taker went in and final confirmation of the numbers, it looks like four seriously injured as well, those hostages hurt when the hostage taking was concluded. we are waiting to hear from the president a lon. and he will give more details and there are immediate unanswered questions. there are reports that another

gunman is loose associated with the supermarket hostage- taking. and other reports and we know n this for a fact that the girlfriend or wife of the hostage taker at the supermarket remains on the los. she's been an accomplice and her picture is out there, too. people are being hunted immediately. and the whole operation is being assessed and this only goes to show the the french authorities that they have a problem here. they have a problem with the large muslim population and a small part of the population unhappy and ready to take up the jihadi calls in various ways. the three terrorist were involved with the jihaddist in syria and iraq and going to iraq to train. it is a confusing situation and that has been resolved to some
10:06 am
degree now and a lot more work to be done jenna? >> gregg is there a noticeable presence of law enforcement that plays to the point of police having this chapter, nearly closed, for the events of the last several days and many more chapters to explore as far as making sure the terrorist don't strike again? >> reporter: i think the best way to describe it jenna it is a city on edge and breathing a sigh or two of relief but remains a city on edge. behind me is the most important icon in paris, france the eiffel tower and heavily armed soldiers are marching back and forth. there are troops in all major centers in france. and the jewish area and moray
10:07 am
district is shut down for fear of copycat attacks against jewish targets and unusual scenes, i have lived here eight years and entire beltway highway encircling paris was completely empty and shut down while this activity happen. yes, it is a city that can breath a sigh or two of relief and a city that remains on edge and a government that knows it has a lot of work ahead of it. >> invaluable perspective, gregg. and much more on what happen today, jon as we move away. >> we watch the latest from the takedown that resolved the stand offs and work to learn more about the suspects in the three- day long siege. we'll check in with marjorie hatch. what is the latest there? >> reporter: the latest is that
10:08 am
the president is about to make his speech following the taking down of the terrorist that were killed this afternoon. there is a sense of relief in paris and france that it is been on tender hocks for the last couple of days and the double hostage taking that occurred today. and it is a sense of relief and time for questioning and how can we avoid it happening again? >> i am sure the relief is pal papitable. and reports that there may be a gunman or gunwoman who escaped from the market, what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: the police are calling for witness accounts to give account of who this woman who is thought to be age 26, and the girlfriend of the gunman who
10:09 am
took hostages in the deli, we wondered if she was with with him in the deli. it seemed so far she didn't take part of the attack. questions remain if she was part of the event yesterday, which saw one police officer shot dead. >> the search is on for her described as his girl friend accomplice. >> and the retired special agent joins us on issues like this. jeff as we get in the 10th minute of our program we heard there is a sigh of relief in paris. and how do you take that sigh of relief and not be lulled in too much calm and understand what is next in the investigation? >> it is concerning that it
10:10 am
could happen to begin with. that is tempering that sigh of relief. but the hostage situations are the most difficult that tactical officers can take. if you storm you are putting the hostages at risk. and the the fact that hostages are being killed is concerning and that this might be another person on the loose. and who else is out there that may share the same bloefs and the two people and brothers involved in the shooting to begin with. >> we do not know, we are working to confirm how many hostages there were. we don't have a good working number. gregg pointed out to us we may hear details from the french president. and we don't know if the hostages could have been killed by the hostage taker or the police storming in. there are so many details.
10:11 am
what do you think jeff about how the event unfolded? >> it seems to me to be going in quickly as possible. and if the reports are correct in discontinuing the communication so the two hostage takers couldn't communicate with one another. that was's smart move and that was done as reported and storms as they did. you can't wait it out too long. there are people who second guess you. if you wait until night fall because of the glass that you can see people at night that would be one way to do it. in the day, you are going in sooner. either way, if the host amgs are are hurt, you will get second the command structure was to do it quickly as possible. >> as you point out it took place before sunset and it did go dark and we got in to
10:12 am
a different situation. it is the intel agency that got a lot of attention in light of what is happening in paris and in his comments saying, that he believed that al-qaeda terrorist in syria are planning mass casulty attacks in the west and there is a sense in our reporting from washington d.c. and paris, that this could be the beginning which is a scary idea. how difficult is it to ward off other threats? president elon said many threats they were able to get ahead of. but what about the next few weeks in 2015? >> it is difficult for law enforcement and military officers to prevent every single act of terrorism. in the united states the fbi has uncovered planning and prevented acts of terrorism. the terrorist only have to be right one time.
10:13 am
and law enforcement has to be right every single time. and if you have beliefs and people in their own country, citizens in france and in the united states and they become radicalized, they are operating most part under the radar and not coming to a country where they go through screening to get in the country and those people if they want to do a terrorist attack it is not that difficult to do that. >> thank you so much. >> three suspects are dead after a three- day terrorist siege. continuing coverage here on fox news channel. re's our new trainer ensure active heart health. i maximize good stuff, like my potassium and phytosterols which may help lower cholesterol. new ensure active heart health supports your heart and body so you stay active and strong. ensure, take life in.

>> fox news alert. we are getting new reaction from the white house to the developments in france. ed henrow has the latest. >> reporter: john we should be
10:17 am
getting the renakz the next couple of minutes. the president is in knoxville, tennessee and supposed to be expanding access to community colleges in america. but told by aides that he will top off those remarks when he gets to the podium in the beginning. we expect remarks from the president of the united states about the unfoldinguation in paris. the president has been getting updates from the national security team about the situation on the ground in france. and yesterday, the president did not address the ongoing situation because he was talking about housing but later in the evening, went over to the french embassy to it express condolences and had a secure conference call to get a sense
10:18 am
and updated assessment of the terror threat nature here at home. that obviously jon is the question moving forward. we saw the horror on the ground playing out in france. but the big question for the white house, beyond those remarks, how safe is the american home land and what is the president doing to secure it in the wake of the remark out of london where intelligence officials said they got intelligence that paris is the beginning. terrorist trying to expand the terrorist inside of europe and here in the united states home land, jon? >> take us behind the curtain. i am guessing the white house would be rather talking about anything else but paris. but president the president was
10:19 am
elected in large part critizing the last administration approach. >> reporter: you are right. the president has been under intense pressure from republicans with the new congress which is the focus. the new republican congress comes to power. and republican lindsay graham has been aggressive to your point going back to 2008, said the president is too focused on campaign promise. winding down the war in iraq that you eluded to and troops coming out of iraq and not leaving any behind. that is one of the reasons that isis sprung up there and that is a key terrorist threat. and they are looking at the detainee policy. and the president releasing detainees that are from yemen
10:20 am
where the terrorist it terrorist are being trained. >> ed thank you. >> so many questions on the security. we'll go to kathryn herige who is talking about what is happening in paris. >> reporter: thank you, jenna we are drilling down on the terrorism ties to the two main suspects, the kouachi brothers. said kouachi the older brother 34 years old travelled to yemen in 2011, 3 years ago and part of his intent was to meet with the al-qaeda leadership in yemen. and at that time an war allak i. and they sent a mule to put a bomb on a flight to detroit. there is a direct connection
10:21 am
between the younger brother cherif with al-qaeda in iraq. in this particular case we are not describing isis or i would call the old traditional style al-qaeda in iraq. it is 2008- 9 when it was led za rka wi. >> the sentencing of a bu hanzan and that is a name viewers are not familiar with. can you give us a description of who he is and why he is important here? >> reporter: he was a talent spotter for osama bin laden's al-qaeda. and he operated out of notorious mosque in north london, known as the thinsberry mosque and tapped richard reed, that was a she
10:22 am
bomber in late 2001 to try to blow up the transatlantic flight. and mouseoi and he was also tied to one of the kouachi brothers as well. >> it is interesting. there is a lot of names that we are familiar with and some we are not. but the big picture just after 1 o'clock eastern time of the connection of the brothers to the larger organization is what? >> reporter: the connections of the brothers are as follows. older brother traveled to yemen made contact with al-qaeda in yemen, three years before this attack. the younger brother the 32-year-old cherif, had contact and did prison time for his efforts to move french nationals into iraq to work with al-qaeda in iraq. and so there is no doubt, that
10:23 am
they have a q bonfites. but the issue is were they directed to act by a foreign terrorist organization. if it was a balance it is tilting toward the direction of a foreign terrorist organization which means simply that this is a significant departure from the lone wolf attacks we saw in ottawa canada, sidney australia, and the hatchet attack in new york city. more highly organized and pre-meditated. >> very interesting. and so much developing and more connections yet to come. thank you. >> you're welcome. >> fast- moving developments and difficult to keep up with everything that is going on in paris. ju dith miller is a reporter and fox news.

and linsweet for the chicago sun times. how do you tell the story without glorifying the kouachi brothers and their supporter and guy who apparently made acquaintance in prison and taking hostages and killed hostages on behalf. how dow write that story judy. >> you write it with context and the right questions. we have to talk with al-qaeda and the assumption that so many manners have. if you killed osama bin laden and killed off the leadership, that you would have killed off the organization, it looks like that is not the case. and look at the phenom nan of mataftization. you get imitators all over the world and it evolves in to something like isis. it is so radical even hesbollah

denounced it. so much has to be explained about the militant islamic context. attack and it would help if our american president began to speak honestly and openly about the phenomenon we are facing. >> the two kouachi brothers, lynn supposedly wanted to die as martyrs. that is what we are are told now. i can't agree with that. if they wanted to die as martyrs, they could have said in the charlie heb do offices instead they made a get away. and they did die, happy to report that. whether they died as martyrs that is for somebody else to determine. without glorifying the guys, how do you tell their story? >> i think the american press
10:26 am
did it before in the case of the brothers accused in the boston bombings and other tragedies. i have read stories trying to set the context, what and who were these brothers and what did the authorities know about them in and they were under surveillance and then were not? and the question of who in other corners of the world and within other groups, their deaths sewn as martyrs is something different. we have seen the martyr phenomenon in many types of suicide bombings on down. that is just a separate discussion because the press has so much to figure out in this not only in the tragedy of a few days ago but the dual hostage takings today. and a lot of people are dependent on the cable news

channels like fox to get your head around the different developments and players at one time. this is where the shined, there may be mistakes long the way, but it shoes the effort that the western press is making to try to explain the horrific happenings. >> judy, alluding to that you can't wish the problem away and simply by not talking about it and changing its name you can't make this thing go away. >> exactly. something that is important to follow, how france responds to the horrific attack. >> let me interrupt you there is talk of apparently bringing back the death penalty in france as a result of all of this. >> i am not sure that will happen given the depth of feeling about the death penaltyment will charlie habdo

>> a fox news alert. there has been chaos in the streets of paris today. we'll give you the time line. eight time time 30 a.m. french local time gunfire was heard near the charles degal airport. police thought they had a line on the kouachi brothers and that ended in a town where shots were fired. two suspects believed to be the kouachi brothers entered a printing company in a office park and a spokesman confirmed they believed the suspects are those responsible for the terrorist attack on the charlie hebdo newspaper. there is a report of a separate shooting inside of a jewish kosher grocery store in paris. hostages were taken including women and children.
10:34 am
2 o'clock p.m. schools near the kosher market are closed and reports that a gunman inside of the grocery store threatened to kill the hostages if the police storm the building where the charlie hebdo suspects are holed up. indicating they are very much connected. 3:55 gunshots where the kouachi brothers were holed up. moments later explosion in the kosher market. the kouachi brothers are died and the hostage was froed and safe. >> and then a hostage taker in the grocery store killed and that was confirmed by french security forces. the latest reports indicate that four hostages were killed in the grocery store, those reports were not confirmed by the

authorities in paris. much of paris remains on lock down after the events. joining us on the phone from paris. grm reporter kathryn fold. kathryn, do we know anything about the number of casulties in the market? >> reporter: no we don't. it is as you were saying, four hostages and that is not confirmed. and the transportation minister spoke to journalist and he didn't give us the figures. he just said the safety of the hostages had made the entire operation extremely difficult and oppressive circumstances. >> it is quite possible that the hostages were killed in the beginning. report ares were that the gun men went over and took over that kosher market shooting. there may have been casulties
10:36 am
and people who died from the start? >> reporter: that's what we are hearing as well. but right at the start someone was shot dead. it is so confusing and we are having various reports coming in and police are doing what they can to make sure the entire area is safe. let's not forget, this grocery store is in the heart of a shopping area and residential area. i am not sure how well your viewers know paris. you have shops and schools and residential areas all compact. and there was a lot of people there and the pictures, you saw a lot of people running, and not all of those were in the grocery store. they were in shops behind and desperate to get away from the situation once the all clear was given. >> perhaps you can fill us in on

the status of the woman described to be the accomplice of a bu a ba dolli. in the impression of being in the store with him and there is her picture on the screen. she is the only one we believe to be alive of the four faces on the screen right now. was she in the store? or is there a gunman or gunwoman who escaped the store? >> reporter: i don't know. we had no confirmation. the police are keeping up an important security operation in central paris. yes, she has had training in how to use fire arms and we know she is armed and dangerous and more than that, i am sorry, i just can't tell you and the police don't know and they are out in big numbers on the paris streets at this time. >> no apologies needed.

we know the information is changing by the moment. kathryn thank you. >> and we have a adjunct senior fellow and first ever state department special representative to muslim communities. we are waiting for the french president to come out and speak publicly over the events and we are waiting to hear from our president; what is the key message that both leaders must convey? >> it is important that they are talking about pushing back against extreme sxichl i hope over the course of the weekend we see holder going to paris, we will see a robust conversation about stopping rekrautment from happening. >> there is criticism of the president of not coming out and calling it islamic terrorism and extremism and attaching the religion to the word of terror,
10:39 am
how important do you think it is? >> this is a conversation we had since 9/11. i was in the bush sxhrgz obama administration, i will tell you, navigating through the lexicon and more time we spend on trying to identify and define exactly what kind of thing it might be takes away from the actual issue which is extremist are preying on young people under the age of 30 around the world. and that is something that we as citizens and as government officials, should be looking at and finding more ways to stop that ideology from going forward. >> you have worked on it for a long time under many administrations and talk to us about the challenges and having an effective policy. and what are the mistakes we can't make again? >> the first thing i would say, muslims around the world matter. it is not regional.
10:40 am
it is young people sedouced by extremist to come forward. we are talking about hard power. and about the the aspects of boots on the ground which is important, of course. and we need to be thinking of the virtual armies that we need to be having in place and credible voices to push back against the ideology of the extremist. that is not limited. muslim in argen tina or denmark or malaysian. the demographic that that young person demographic is what extremist are going after. >> and yes, we as policy makers have not always looked at the connectivity between the ideas that it are spreading around the world and for millennials and digital natives it is a squish of their finger on a phone. we need to be ahead of the

and this is a point in the news business. whether making fun of the christ or bible oratora h. free speech is meaningless unless we protect on vile speech. the french newspaper had a right to do this and all the more important in the light of the attacks that we recognize thattine though we may not like the content. >> it is interesting that you talk about that. it is it showing the cartoons on camera and then the media is not brave if they don't show the cartoons. as a journalist i would have a difficult time expressing the cartoons because it is vulgar and sexual innuendo and i would not feel comfortable with. how do journalist navigate that
10:48 am
moving forward? >> it is cowardly some critics say not to show the cartoon. it is a gesture of solidarity of charlie hebdo and i understand those who want to do but it doesn't advance the story and describe the less vulgar images, i think the most important thing that we are not cowed and not going to be dictated by fire to comment on and in the case of satirist and mock the terrorist that would kill us and if people want to make satirical comments about relation, fine. but to simply republish the car tons, i don't think it is a brave thing to do. it will turn people off and a sound editorial judgment and we have to make judgments in this business. >> keep the focus on the bigger picture which is terrorism and extremism and notes inially necessarily
