police targeting the wives of two gunmen that killed 12 people at a french newspaper. they made 500 phone calls to the wife of a third attacker. police just released the 18-year-old who was the driver of the get away car. his alibi checked out. is free speech going too far? bill donohue is taking a lot of heat this morning. he is back as is joe saying no they were not asking for it.
7:33 am
bill your position was there was no excuse for what happened, but you have to be careful. >> it's a tragic thing that happened. the muslims are the ones to blame. this guy who was killed he was a stupid man. because what you can't do is this i'm making an explanation not a justification. you cannot be virginal and say it's okay to continuely insult muslims with the most graphic anal things imaginable and pretend they are going to come after me. had he put restraint on himself he wouldn't have been shot. okay? that doesn't justify it, just making an observation. >> what do you think, bill? >> i think bill needs to go to confession. you need a smack on your knuckles with a nun's ruler. you are marginalizing freedom of

7:35 am
freedom of speech is not absolute. one is obscenity. there's fighting words, there's all kind of examples on it. i'm sensitive to it. a couple years ago i was sued for liabling somebody. i know all about that. >> see, bill. you sue. you did it in a very legal way. >> he's saying bad guys don't do that. why can't they -- let me give you an example. jon stewart showed a picture of a naked woman with her legs spread and the holy family in between. that's not mel brooks satire. i don't mind edginess. >> nobody is threatening killing jon stewart. >> i'm saying, though, i don't want to take this moment to say the artists need to exercise restraint. self-sensorship is in order,
7:36 am
don't hit below the belt. >> in your "snl" days, you would have ticked off everybody. >> i should have been dead ten times over. >> can you go too far? >> you can say what you want when you want. >> no matter how pornographic or obscene? >> any religious satire. >> pornography, should that be freedom of speech child pornography? >> there's a law against that. >> according to you, there shouldn't be. you believe everything should go. >> i don't disagree with you. we are in the same boat. i don't think you are satirize any group. to say the guy that ran the magazine should be killed -- >> i didn't say that. >> he didn't say that. >> he drew a line between things journalistically and things that go too far. >> satire. bill you are not wrong.
7:37 am
you can't marginalize it. >> joe -- joe, these guys, it's horrible what happened to them. do you put it on the same level as you do those with the pentagon papers, those behind watergate, do you put them on that level? >> when it comes to national security, they are snitches in my mind. snowden and those guys yeah, they are revealing government secrets. this is satire it's a joke. when jon stewart says something offensive to catholics, you wince, go hey, it's freedom of speech. >> i can make a joke. i can make a joke about you know, some people performing anal -- >> you are going to be inappropriate. >> you are making my point. i can't use the "f" word or "n" word on this show without being
7:38 am
bleeped. i like that. it's sensorship. without that, you need a license. one way to have real sensorship is to exercise restraint. if restraint is a dirty word in western civilization, we are finished. >> muzslims can't restrain themselves. >> they should be shot. they should be shot. what can i tell you? >> you are talking about how to support ourselves, watch our satire, they might never be satisfied. >> they will never be satisfied. >> if they did things according to to you, they are -- >> my point is even in this country, we should not unnecessarily engage in this pornographic insult against anybody's religion. i agree with your point. you are not going to satisfy these people because you stop with the most grotesque form. i think that on another basis, we should put the brakes on

between hitting above the belt and below the belt. reasonable people can disagree but where do we draw the line? it's unreasonable to say no lines should be drown. >> you are drawing lines. >> you don't want child pornography. you say that right? >> i wouldn't do that. >> you drew a line. good for you. we all should draw a line. >> look at the time. look at the time. you both make people think. frank didn't seem to mind. >> thank god he liked it. >> we know now that the three dead suspects were islamic radicals. the former governor says it's time people call them that. governor, good to have you. we have not collectively called them that. we call them terrorists. they are islamic radical
7:41 am
terrorists, what do you think of that? >> when eric holder goes to paris today, i wonder if he's going to try to suggest that what happened at charlie hebdo -- we are at war with islamic terrorists. when you employ the word jihad, you are employing a religious word from the koran. am i saying every muslim in the world is jihadist and a murderer? of course not. we need more people to be straight forward and honest and say you have to know your enemy you have to understand what his end game is. in the case of islamic radicals the end game cannot be resolved peacefully or rationally because they are not peaceful, rational people. let me be clear if your war is religious and you believe in the words of the blues brothers you

are on a mission from god and your mission is to kill everybody that don't agree with you, you cannot negotiate. you kill or they kill you. that is the only option with people that believe god wants them to kill everybody who doesn't agree with them. >> governor, the president said he is not out to stigmatize muslims, going on a search and weeding out muslim neighborhoods. what did you make of that? >> well the reason they always say is because we don't want there to be religious hate crimes directed toward muslims don't want them discriminated against. look at facts. in 2013, the fbi crime stats show 1223 reported religious hate crimes in america. of those, 13.7% of them were directed toward muslims. neil 60% of the religious hate crimes in 2013 were directed toward jews. we don't have an issue in america with people going out

last gas tax hike. we are out of money for the roads and bridges. we have to do it. what do you think? >> any american with a brain and a conscience knows that a gas tax is extremely unpopular among americans widely spread because it is punching people right in the gut. every time you guy a gallon of gasoline, you are paying the government more money. that's a lot of money over a long period of time. americans have revolted against a notion of a gas tax. for a politician to say because the price is low now is the time to do it. that's an underhanded, manipulative move, neil and americans should raise up and protest and say no way. who runs the country the people or the politicians. there are many ways to tax. >> roads and bridges are in need of repair. what have you done with the $100 billion you get each year off

it's the oldest democracy and we have the oldest infrastructure because this generation of politicians will not get in a room they will not discuss their differences. that starts with the president. i will talk bush or obama, i don't care. the president has to get in the room with elected officials and push trade. >> i they's why we are going to get it and see a gas tax. a lot of people should. i think it's part of a bigger deal on tax reform. >> well, it will be a sad day, if it is. there are so many other ways to raise on people and in addition let's not forget, a gas tax is a regressive tax. the poorest who have to pay the same price as the richest get hurt the most and i think if that's what our politicians stand for, then we need another election. >> john good seeing you again.
