9:00 pm
here soon. hello and welcome to a special sunday edition of justice. thanks for being with us tonight. you are watching now an incredible display of unity among world reeders, reminiscent, if you're old enough to remember, of the liberation of paris from nazi german in 1944. today europe stared down terror in a peaceful dmen strairgs. a solidarity march where millions protested the terrorist attack by the islamic extremists. sunday's march will most certainly make history. and they march, certainly shoulder to shoulder, arm in

fox news continue rick levinthal. >> at times it was somber, at times it was celebratory. 4 million people, the largest demonstration in the history of this nation. the president of france called it an amazing event and it was a show of unity and strength after this horrific week, that some have compared to our 9/11. the marchers held signs honoring and remembering the 17 terror victims, friday's attack on the kosher grocery and wednesday's attack on that satirical newspaper. t
9:03 pm
the. also tonight we learned that those four people killed at that kosher grocery all of them will be buried in paris on thursday. there were a few hundred that turned this rally into a party, they were playing music and dancing in the streets. today, judge, a peaceful and powerful showing, a significant show of solidarity and support. you know, rick, there is, i think a glaring absence of the president of the united states, the vice president, the secretary of state kerry, i mean what is the word on the street?
9:04 pm
i mean when you've got the head of the palestinian authority, and you've got benjamin netanyahu and the number of war leaders, almost 50 at least, with the united states visibly absent, what is the word on the street there. >> eiff >> reporter: i'm not sure the people of france were as concerned with who wasn't there but who was there. a remarkable display of unity by most of the world. much of france and most of paris took to the streets to show support for each other and this cause to demonstrate how important democracy and freedom is. we didn't talk to a lot of people about who didn't show up. i'm sure that that absence was noted and has been noted. but i think what was important and is important to most people here, is that there was a dramatic display from world leaders and also from the people themselves. >> and certainly, rick, a peaceful display as well.
9:05 pm
stay safe, rick, thanks so much. >> i will, thank you. >> all right, and former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. and fox news contributor, john bolton joins me now. good evening, dwoor ambassador, first of all your reaction to that incredible march in paris. i think it was very moving demonstration of the horror that people in france and around europe and the region felt. on the other hand, i have to say given the weakness of the overall european response to the threat of islamic terror, we have to ask whether this is a political gesture or will it mean tomorrow when the government officials returned to their offices that they will actually change french and european policy, and that's the test. >> what do you mean, ambassador, the overall weakness of the european countries? well, i think what we have seen in the last 13 years is a lot of
9:06 pm
rhetorical -- there's been exceptions to that, in the case of libya for sure. but by and large, the united states, among the western nations has carried the heaviest burden. now this -- these two dramatic attacks in paris may change that, this march may be evidence of that, but you'll forgive me if i'm not entirely confident that once the gesture is done, the policy and the implementation will actually change. >> ambassador, the absence of the president, the vice president, secretary of state, does that strike you as rather alarming for a nation that is usually at the forefront of most issues? >> well, speaking of gestures and policy, i think it's a fairly dramatic indication that the obama administration is not moved. i was stunned to hear that the even though attorney general eric in paris today
9:07 pm
for this meeting of justice and interior ministers, that he left town after that meeting and didn't participate in the march. i thought at least he would be there. but ask yourself this question, is it better or worse for obama to go to paris, join the march and then not change american policy, or for obama not even bother to go to paris and not change american policy, because that's the real test for us as americans. on monday, when american policies start to change or will it simply continue in the past it's been these last six years? >> given the fact that the white house has announced that they're going to have this the conference in february of countering violent extremism, not even radical islam, not even jihad, i mean is there any question in your mind that the united states is going to change the path that it's already on? >> i think there's very little chance of it. my understanding is, by the way, that this conference was actually scheduled for october. >> right.
9:08 pm
by the department of homeland security, and then for some unannounced reason cancelled. so it's not even a new reaction to the question, it's let's get that conference we had to postpone. but you put your finger on it. this is not about violent extremism, this is about the ideology of islamist as terror. >> the president of egypt made a stunning statement on january 1, and, you know, has long fought the islamic extremism, ridding his country in -- hamas, the terrorists. they have believe set an example for muslims who won't follow rate the extremist muslims. would you agree? >> i thought it was a dramatic gesture, he followed it up a few days later on the christmas eve,

9:10 pm
his prime minister did very directly. so it may be that he has more acute political sensitivity. i think the spotlight is now on france, will they act accordingly, or once this demonstration is over, will they simply lapse back into their pattern. all right, and up next new years of terrorist sleeper cells in america, we have the latest details. and voting tonight's insta poll, what's your reaction to the white house scheduling a conference on extremism for february. february. facebook or tweet me
