1:00 am
8:00 p.m. see you then. hello, everyone. i'm greg gutfeld. this is "the five." this just in, bill clinton is an islamaphobe. >> they got sucked into this by somebody essentially using religion and religious politics toed a toed toed a advocate the greater
1:01 am
standard. we won't let you say or do what you want to do. therefore, we have come to your country so we can kill you if you make us mad. >> praise allah. a leader speaks truth saying publicly what wimps say privately. i would say off with his head but there are those that would take it seriously. it's a jarring departure from a cowering establishment. the lie that it's not religion stupid. it's based on grim assumptions of the west, that you and i are armed with pitchforks ready to chase muslims because of bad apples. it's the same as groundhog day. the double standard that clinton exposes, after intolerance makes one country inhospitable it moves elsewhere and we let it. it's the one bag to check on
1:02 am
departure and designed to erase its rivals and it's real. not like islamaphobia like those who sound the alarm against evil. intimidating a fearful population and timid counterparts accepted by a cowerly media. so what about fox, msnbc, reuters now that bill clinton is a right-wing extremist? their job. all right. bob, you've been saying this yourself. more dems have got to speak up. nothing happens. it's great. >> not only that, this probably would you say, is the best-known politician politically in the world. >> right. >> at least among the top two or three. nobody has got an excuse.
1:03 am
that was -- you can't get more blunt than that, right? and so i would think that if i were a political figure including obama and the rest of them, i would say, well bill did it so i guess i'm going to do it, too. >> it makes obama look timid, don't you think? >> it makes us all look timid. i keep going back to the rest of these and you start to have a list of them. he's not going to get killed, he doesn't think, anyway. >> he has 24-hour protection basically. >> he's not running for anything. this is a politician that's not running for anything. i mean, his wife may. it may have implications for his wife. i'm sure she's not happy about this comment. >> i think she wanted this comment. >> i agree. >> i don't know about that. >> on the heel of all of the push back that president obama is not able to say islamic terror is islamic -- this is the
1:04 am
perfect time to come up and say, guess what, it's hypocritical what these terrorists are doing. he's drawing the line and separating hillary from obama. >> he did it on the seth myers show. five people watch that. if he was going to do that, wouldn't he do it on a bigger set. >> maybe he knew he was going to be replayed on "the five" that millions watch. >> there's nothing the clintons do that is by chance. >> that's true. >> but her base the base that she's hungry for do you think would be receptive to this comment? >> it's really more about the elizabeth warren base and i don't think she's -- it matters to be honest with you. they are going to vote for her anyway. i think we're vastly overstating the number of people in this country who really cringe at the idea of islamic terrorists.
1:05 am
>> people that are worried or -- >> i don't know how many -- nobody that i know. >> it's not the number, it's where they are placed. it's everybody who is in the top eschelon in the newspaper and every network cringed. it's so unseemly to connect the two. it's uncomfortable at cocktails party to do that. if a conservative on this show dana had said what bill clinton said would care and media be all over him and start a petition? >> what he said is something that other people have been saying. it does matter that he said it. he's an older, wiser statesman. he still talks to all of the world leaders, much to the chagrin of somebody at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. but he's very plugged in and he's a great communicator.
1:06 am
he he knows how to cut through the clutter. >> as opposed to the very night before, another ex-president going ahead and pointing the finger at israel for what's going on in palestinian for some of the things going on right now. bill clinton nailed it. he nailed it. >> i was going to give you a compliment but i think i will take it back. this is interesting. you know the guy who played the muslim commentator on jon stewart, he's starting his own web series of which he's going to expose phobia people like me and eric bolling. >> wow. >> fantastic. >> however hopefully they will play that clip because bill clinton just summarized all of the things that we've been saying for months now. >> but then they'll make fun of you for supporting something that bill clinton did. it will never end. you'll always be the subject of -- >> let's talk about the pope. not olivia pope. the pope. this is what he was talking
1:07 am
about. he was talking about what happened in paris and free speech, he had some opinions on it. let's roll it, shall we? so i guess i'll go to you, dana. i think he was having a casual conversation, talking about this making a metaphor, an analogy to his friend but he's wrong. he's very wrong, isn't he? >> my gut and my instinct says that he is wrong. i'm for free speech free will, independence and i get to choose and i think -- i don't know if there was a mistranslation or taken out of context. i looked to katherine lopez
1:08 am
because she follows the pope very closely and she talked about how she thought the pope was trying to draw people into being better. right? he was saying -- instead of saying you cannot do this, maybe he meant you should not do this. you should try to be better try to be nicer people. i think that's maybe what he meant. >> it's the wrong thing to say after people were murdered. it feels like they are blaming the victim because they had mocked the faith and died. >> right. i'm tired of being worried about offending people. then don't speak. there's always going to be somebody that could potentially react badly to what you say, act out, and then who are you going to blame? in some people's cases to make a joke or get on stage, comedy is supposed to make you think. sometimes it's going to urthurt,
1:09 am
sometimes it's going to make you uncomfortable. i don't want to discourage people from being real because you're going to offend somebody. i'm interested in more voices. i don't want to silence people. >> his metaphor was slightly off. it's analogy. i would say this to the pope there's a difference between punching somebody and taking a knife and cutting their heads off. i can understand where he was coming from, but religions that's an appropriate thing to say but i'm not quite sure i would put it in that context nor do i think at this time it's the right time. he's been out in the few weeks strongly on this issue. >> very quickly there's many, many examples in the bible of where you're told not to talk poorly of people. there are punishments for doing that. i think the pope was using it as a teaching moment. the golden rule don't say
1:10 am
something about -- do unto others that they want done to you. it's more of the teaching moment. i don't look to the pope for the commentary on free speech. i understand where the push back is for the pope. but again, the vast majority of catholics that listen to the guy are not going to get mad at the guy for looking at his wife and chopping his head off. >> the problem is, if you apply it to religion today, what do you apply it to tomorrow? this is a key figure that people look up to. there's an ability to misconstrue what he said and apply it to other areas of life and some may use it to justify their reasoning for being quiet or being silenced. >> even the pope told you not to do that. >> exactly. >> i think the timing is implicit because it lends actions against words. and the analogy of the punching thing is -- was a very bad thing
1:11 am
and you have to be able to -- you have to. you should be able to make fun of anything and everything because they are words. they are not deeds. >> let's think about this for a second. he probably said that because i think he sees -- and so do i at this moment -- a major clash coming here. >> yes. >> directed at the islamic religion which he does not want to see happen. it was a teaching moment. let's try to put this in some kind of perspective although it's difficult for us to put it into perspective. he's saying, before we go over the edge, let's try to stop and try to be nice to one another. >> i think there's one other teaching moment. the pope is nearly 80. am i right? >> yeah. >> in the world of instant communication and reaction and outrage and an immediate reaction, if you're going to have the pope talk on a plane on a microphone and ramble on the chances of his remarks being
1:12 am
miscon misconstrued immediately and having to put the toothpaste back in the tube that's a problem. he's an important voice and with that comes responsibility. i'm not saying he can't speak off the cuff but there are consequences. >> put the toothpaste -- i've never heard that before. >> parts out of the barn? doesn't ring a bell? you can't put toothpaste back in the tube. have you ever tried? >> no. >> on that note, you're going to tell me what you did. the rncs winter annual meeting is under way. i've booked my room right at the super 8 next to the ice machine. mitt romney will be speaking. there he is.
1:13 am
1:14 am
1:15 am
1:16 am
republicans have set a date that the rnc will hold the 2015 presidential campaign in cleveland beginning july 18th considerably earlier than previous years. the committee's annual winter meeting is under way in california. serving potential white house contenders will be addressing
1:17 am
members and donors over the next three days. among them rick perry, scott walker, ben carson and mitt romney. another strong sign he's serious about making another run. campaign call campaign carl is keeping tabs. he's in california. >> reporter: all political conventions for every party should at least be in southern california or some place where there is lots of sun. >> what is the mood there? is anybody still celebrating the midterm elections or have they moved on to 2016 nail biting? >> reporter: both. they are looking forward to 2016 and with a lot of the presidential race under way they know mitt romney comes tomorrow night. we heard dr. ben carson a while ago. tomorrow, rick perry and scott walker will be speaking later this evening. you hear them talking about and looking forward to the debate and what will be a battle in the gop.
1:18 am
>> bob, do you have a question? >> two things struck me about this. one was, cleveland, are you kidding? the second thing was, limiting the number of debates, which was a smart thing to do. 27 last time and they got it down to 6 or 8. the other thing is, moving the convention up earlier for the republicans because you remember last time romney could not use the bunch of money he had given for the general election. they couldn't spend it when they needed it. was that generally agreed upon by everybody that it was a smart move? >> reporter: well, first of all, the decision to have the convention in ohio one of the most important states of presidential politics, is why it ended up specifically in cleveland. and the truth is, they are trying to shape the debates -- it was 21 last time around and it ended up being reality children with a new episode every week or two and some of the republicans were beginning to tire of it, not just the voters but the candidates themselves. by putting the convention in july, the idea is to get the republican nomination over so
1:19 am
the gop can begin to go over the democratic nominee, which looks like it will be hillary clinton. she could have the campaign all to herself to go after the republicans. republicans will start this in july and it's going to be a month earlier. >> immigration has been a hot topic and lots of division among the party. what issues are coming? what do you think are going to be central in terms of unity with this party in moving forward if they want to win? >> reporter: there's a number of issues in play and a great deal has to do with how republicans in congress are fighting the obama agenda at the white house. out on the campaign trail, a lot of this is about horse race and these people are really enthusiastic. there's a division in the gop on a couple of levels. all 168 of them agree on it. that is, amongst conservatives, folks like ted cruz and mike huckabee and others competing after very socially conservative
1:20 am
tea party types there's a whole bunch of candidates already fighting against one another. and to use the cliche, it's the establishment types jeb bush mitt romney, chris christie or scott walker. they are already sniping about all of this. the amusement that you see on the faces here today is that they are looking forward to the debate and, yes, they have a disagreement within thean party. jeb bush supports a path to legal status right now. a lot of republicans don't. mitt romney doesn't. so there is a division amongst the two top establishment candidates, one with the money in the polls and yet you also have republicans like rand paul who say there has to be a way that they are more tolerant and welcoming and solutions to deal with the immigrants that are here now. the division is wide. what we don't have here is fear of it. there's a real enthusiasm for
1:21 am
it. amongst conservatives, they are saying for years we've watched our conservative candidates beat each other up on the far right and now we can watch the establishment guys as well. >> greg? >> you're seeing a lot of enthus enthusiasm but it's pointless unless there's a prospect player. the question is has my name come up? >> right now -- >> what is so funny? >> there are 23 24 candidates. no no dr. gutfeld on the lips here. what they do is they have a sense of humor. and they think it's actually about time for the republican party to change and then this generational thing. romney and jeb bush have been around for a long time and you've got newcomers who say it's time for fresh faces.
1:22 am
so it's generational as an opportunity to make changes. the rnc the administrators, the guys behind the scenes who put together the money and the rules for the battle of the 2016 campaign to go forward the next few days. >> nice day. >> we need to point out that reince priebus, who was under a bunch of scrutiny until the 2014 elections, then he seems to -- it looks like he's going to get re-elected to chairmanship. let me ask you this. are there 23 24 candidates on the right because there's a feeling there that this is the best opportunity in a long time to give elizabeth warren as a democrat? >> and i think you could add to the motivation that the notion of a hillary clinton presidency or elizabeth warren presidency is tremendously motivating for conservatives because they can't fathom the idea that it's terrifying to them. it's both of those things. again, these folks aren't going to argue about policy here.
1:23 am
what they are trying to do is create a playing field a so that the candidates can do that and what we've seen is all of them are firmly in the belief that mitt romney is running it. he's not playing any games that he's in. they are all firmly of the belief that jeb bush will get in. governor bush has been traveling around the country and doing most of it behind the scenes meeting with potential donors. whereas romney tomorrow night speaks on the deck of the "uss midway" here in san diego. >> i hate to interrupt you. you're quite on top of it but you're not suggesting to are a minute the republicans are enthusiastic about a debate on immigration. it's the single biggest problem that they have. don't they recognize that? some sided with the democrats. that is a huge, big issue. do they see that? >> well, of course they do. but -- excuse me. bob, you've got to remember that right now they are focused on who they are going to pick
1:24 am
amongst themselves. you've got a republican who is an anti comprehensive immigration reform republican. they are looking forward to it and assuming they are going to prevail. you have more of the establishment who have been saying for a decade -- plus, george h.w. bush supported giving citizenship back to illegal aliens back in 2001. it's not a new idea. people have been outnumbered in recent years but they think there's an opportunity to make changes and get the president to deal with border security first and they are enthusiastic about it because they think their idea is going to prevail. this is the general election. this is about the primary right now. >> which is your favorite show to do on fox newschannel? >> five. high fives all around. >> we know that you are happier today, you're back in the political scene. have fun this cycle. thanks for joining us. ahead, what's it like spending 19 days climbing up a
1:25 am
3,000-foot rock wall using only your hands and feet? you're going to hear from the remarkable hair who just concurred el capitan, next.

1:30 am
over the last six years. those are the elements that any big dream need to come true. so i hope that everyone that has been following around can take the don wall as an example of what is possible and find their own don wall. >> these are personal heroes. >> what is the big deal? i do this every single night when i lose my apartment keys. i snake up my apartment wall and i get in and i don't brag about it. by the way, let's start inventing new sports that have real actual risks involved. i came up with one called busting where a single adult has to confront a group of rude teens on a bus. real-life risks. real-life sports. this is like -- i do that in my underwear. >> i'm going to need to see that on video. >> i have it on video. >> these guys climbed that wall with their hands and feet and a
1:31 am
safety rope. >> i disagree with greg. i love the human spirit i love the risk, kind of frontiers men of the west. you look skeptical. do you agree? >> i climb with my son. >> that's an elevator. >> i'm not sure -- >> i have stood at the base of that thing and no more climb up 3 feet on that thing. the guys said, well, he had to wait for the other guy because he couldn't get up there. >> it was a couple minutes later. >> i love it. i love it. i would try and you have one life. >> you would try it? >> you bet i would. >> next up how about a big old serving of hollywood hypocrisy. watch this liam neeson movie,
1:32 am
"taken 3." >> special forces. >> a trained sniper. >> now check out what he said. "there's too many guns out there. especially in america. there's over 300 million guns. privately owned in america. i think it's a disgrace." >> he needs to stop telling us what to do with our guns. with he protect ourself. we do that for ourselves. stop taking away our guns. we're law-abiding citizens. >> 10 million for "taken 2." >> violence in movies lead to violence and people shooting

things, i don't think that they do and i think he made a good point. >> but he's saying that guns do and that's not accurate either. >> you and i don't agree on that. >> because it's not true. >> anyhow -- >> it does seem hypocritical. but he might be right. there are too many guns. okay. fine. if we waved the magic wand -- if all of the criminals were to give up their guns maybe you wouldn't need as many guns to respond. but it is your right to have them. >> absolutely. >> somebody has taken his brain intellectually, he's a starved man. after walking by it. because that's how celebrities are with their analysis of an issue. it's not in depth. they heard something on the tv. they were at a cocktail party. he knows nothing about guns except how to pretend to shoot them in a movie. if he had actually balls,
1:34 am
replace all those guns with bananas and do the movie. but you won't. because it will look stupid. because guns look awesome. you know they look awesome. >> you know what else is dangerous? skiing is dangerous. >> yes skiing is dangerous. >> climbing up a rock wall is dangerous. >> yes. >> patrick visited jimmy kimmel the other night and played out the most annoying things that people do on planes. >> this is the guy who will talk to you nonstop during the flight. >> hello. what's your name. where are you from? what is it you do? my name is patrick. i'm english. like the muffins. >> this tyler perry movie is so funny. >> i agree with him. the thing that happened to me on

list. have you seen any of these movies? what do you think? >> i've seen a fair amount but the big injustice here and i think america will agree with me, the "lego" movie only got an oscar for a song. that was probably the best movie and achievement in movie making of the last five or ten years. it is an incredible film. the reason why it was ignored is because of how it looks and it celebrated capitalism it celebrated innovation and ingenuity and it's a shame. i'm thrilled for j.k. simmons. he got nominated for "whiplash." if he played a gay, nazi rapist. he's one of the greatest villains of all times and still does the farmers insurance commercials. >> are you serious about "lego"? >> yes. >> there he is doing his farmers insurance commercials.
1:42 am
i wonder whether he'll still do them when he gets an oscar. also, wes anderson walks a tight rope of preciousness. i loved "bottle rocket." "budapest" is a good movie. >> i didn't like it. >> we usually like the same movies, for some reason. >> don't flatter yourself. >> i didn't see any of them but i wanted to share these. >> this is gone guilfoyle. and behind every joke is the truth. and the next one, this is bob. dog catcher instead of fox catcher. >> right. >> next one starring jennifer, puppy hood. and my very favorite is american tv host eric bolling.

jedediah, i am not surprised the timing is not the best. >> the problem, if you did this with christianity, and with anybody else people would say why are you singling them out? they don't want to seem islamaphobic. i don't know do they not read the news and know it is a tense subject for many? >> it is like a softball -- >> on campus, it is accepted you can openly mock organized religion. however, you realize it doesn't extend to islam. that is because undergraduates are cowards, they know they can make fun of baptists or catholics, they're not going to get their head chopped up. so they prefer the easy battle with christians, and in this case, religion is suddenly okay. >> i actually think that

inter-faith efforts can be very good. >> true. >> and they work really well, like the faith-based initiative that was part of the bush initiative, that was not just about christianity. that was about all sorts of different religions working together to do what government can not do well. this, possibly the timing was off, insensitive, they already pulled it back and didn't think it through. but that is typical for colleges, they always do a story and it doesn't take 24 hours for them to dissipate. >> i think duke was sanctioning it by amplifying the call to prayer rather than just saying let's go do it. now what they have done is move it from the chapel to the quandrangle, and they should do that to amplify the sound of what is the call to prayer for the muslim group, would alienate
