hi, everyone. good morning. it's saturday, the 17th of january, 2015. i'm anna kooiman and a fox news alert. pope francis rushed to his plane, leaving a typhoon devastated city as the area braces for a new storm. it's brewing as millions get ready for his historic mass. and secretary of state john kerry brings a friend as he finally arrives in france. ♪ ♪ all you've got to do is call and i will be there ♪ >> make you proud to be an american? we have air sickness bags for you later in the show.

2013 typhoon that left thousands dead and he apologized to worshipers for having to leave early. >> we have new video showing a private plane carrying filipino officials nose down in the grass after overshooting the runway. this happens just minutes after the pope took off in another airplane. witnesses reported hearing a tire blow out. no one was hurt. and they're bracing for the typhoon that could hit tomorrow when 6 million people are expected to attend the pope's historic mass there. janice dean is tracking the storm for us. what's going on? >> yeah, tucker, it is equivalent to a category 1 hurricane, 80 mile per hour sustained winds as it's making landfall across the philippines. you can see we'll see heavy rain, strong winds with this. and of course some storm surge. as we go into sunday the pope is now in manila. heavy rain in the forecast along with those very gusty winds. it's going to be a trying day of course for all of the folks who have been recovering for many

typhoons. this is one of the most active areas on the planets for typhoons and the forecast precipitation, several inches of rain north of tacloban. as it makes landfall, as an equivalent category 1 hurricane. we will see a warm-up for parts of the plains states and the northeast and we are tracking a coastal storm that's going to move in on sunday. in fact, all of the big cities heading into sunday and monday. of course we'll watch it all, lots to talk about from the fox news extreme weather center. back to you. >> thank you janice. boy, a million people gathered with this storm rolling in. >> yeah, i wonder if it will delay -- >> a lot to see out there. other stories making headlines this hour. the man connected with the

massacre at a pakistani military school waking up behind bars. 150 people were killed in the december attack, most children. the taliban claimed responsibility. president obama and british prime minister david cameron holding a joint press conference at the white house to address terrorism. but their tone couldn't be more different. >> we do face a very serious islamist extremist terrorist threat across the world and we have to be incredibly vigilant in terms of that threat. >> we're also going to keep working together on strategies to counter violent extremism that radicalizes recruits and mobilizes people especially young people to engage in terrorism. >> the two leaders both vowing to fight what they called quote sickening terrorism. and inspired by isis, he plotted to attack the u.s. capitol with bombs but he was busted. now christopher cornell will remain behind bars.

a judge denied the 20-year-old ohio man bail. this as his father continues to defend him saying he was set up by a snitch and could have never carried out the attack by himself. a hero is waking up in a home, hundreds of officers applauding andrew dawsy. he and his partner were off duty when they responded to a robbery car in a deli. both were shot as that gunman fled. the other officer got out of the hospital last week. police have since arrested the shooting suspect those your headlines. all right, last week at the beginning of this week on sunday, we sat here on this couch and showed you why video of leaders from around the world, david cameron from england, angel merkel, leaders of israel, they're all gathering in paris and we asked where the

united states presence? it wasn't visible. >> there was outrage across french newspapers slamming the united states for not having a presence there. and where's the secretary of state, and instead we sent eric holder who wasn't among the folks in the front of this row. finally, secretary of state john kerry has gone to france and this sounds like -- it sounds like i'm making this up. it sounds like a "saturday night live" sketch. so in order to -- i don't know, bridge the gap, mend some fences, secretary of state john kerry decided to bring singer/songwriter james taylor with him to sing a song "you've got a friend" on stage. watch this uncomfortable moment. ♪ ♪ winter, spring, summer or fall all you got to do is call ♪ ♪ and i will be there, yes, i'll be there ♪ ♪ you've got a friend >> well, at least the intention

remember how no one liked bush and he was so divisive, this is obama going to fix it all. rush limbaugh crystallized it. >> john kerry, i'm literally embarrassed. he actually dragged james taylor and had -- and kerry spoke french again, which is embarrassing again in itself. and then james taylor sang "you've got a friend." my -- i'm embarrassed to be an american today. oh, my, what a bunch of wasusses, what a bunch of mush and squishy and islamists all over the world cannot believe the good luck they have been handed. >> wow. let us know your thoughts on this.

was james taylor the right way to extend an olive branch? >> and if john kerry is in the middle of a midlife crisis should he display it to the rest of the world? we have news out of duke university, in durham, north carolina. you recall we told you earlier in the week their plans to broadcast the muslim call of prayer right over the quad would have broadcast islamic prayers over the duke campus. now, the school has said under pressure from donors apparently we're not doing it. >> yeah. >> and also citing security issues. they had a lot of comments and i don't know. they said that there were some issues with security that they were concerned about. >> look, it's come down to money. tucker mentioned the doneors. you have members of the trustees from the wall street who are not happy about it. so when you have alumni calling and saying what are you doing, you're going to start to do this, duke's position all along has been inclusiveness. this is a show of tolerance

right now in the wake of what happened in france. we wanted to include muslim members of our student -- student body and our faculty and show inclusiveness here. >> there's a total crock. there's nothing inclusive about duke. notice they're not giving equal time to say evangelical pro-life messages. if you got into the middle of the duke quad and read sections of the bible that criticized homosexuality, you'd be dragged away by school security. they're making a political statement about how they're on the side of muslims. >> we recently reported just yesterday they recently cancelled a pro-life event at duke to your point there. >> so if they're inclusive, why not include everybody? >> who is at the heart of this? who is behind this at the islamic study center at duke and was pushing for this call to prayer? this was dr. safi and he said after the news that duke had pulled the plug on this, he's saddened that external threats detracts us from celebrating

muslims and christians living together honoring each other. >> who's missing from that? you notice? >> jews. >> yeah there are no jewish students at duke? oh, yeah, they are. >> a significant population there. >> we did this story at the daily caller about a woman from ohio who said i disagree with this decision, she got called by the cops. i don't buy the external threat thing. i think this is another way to pretend they're being persecuted. i think donors didn't like it. but show me the evidence they were facing violent threats. meanwhile, on the show, terror among us. islamic extremists living and recruiting right on american soil. are they living next to you? he attempted to rob a convenience store but he got away with nothing. what's with the thumbs up? the epic fail you have got to hear to believe. ♪

hi good morning. quarter past the hour. his dad calls him a quote mama's boy, but the feds say he is a traitor and a terrorism. 20-year-old christopher lee cornell, armed and ready to attack our nation's capitol for isis was busted this week, but he isn't alone. the clarion project has identified several major islamic extremist groups and all of them are functions right here in our own backyard. joining us now with more is national security analyst for the clarion project ryan morrow. thank you for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> when we hear this is, you know, just miles away from urban areas, our hearts just drop to our chest. tell us about the first one in hancock, new york. >> that's where the headquarters of muslims of the americas is. they are led by a radical cleric

imam has preached jihad. >> and anwar al alwaki being credited for training one of the brothers in the attacks in paris. >> and experts couldn't tell what he was saying, it was more subtle that's what they do. they pretend to be moderate. >> right here not far from where we're sitting in brooklyn, new york, what are we looking at? >> a mosque run by one of the most radical clerics in the country. we have countless quotes of him saying america needs to be turned into a caliphate. he is pretending on the moderate. there's a lecture out there's video of that he says that the problem we run into is we talk about shari'ah, when we're not there yet. that's not moderate. he is ferociously anti-american. >> it seems like there's several

in new york. one in brooklyn and also one in jamaica queens. >> right. they put on some of the largest islamic conferences across the country. that's linked to a pakistani islamist group. they preach that muslims should engage in deception in order to enhance the jihadist cause. only 2% of muslim americans say this group represents them and by the way a dozen muslim organizations say that first group i mentioned, muslim of the americas, should be branded as a foreign terrorist organization. lots of allies in this. >> is there significance that flee of the four you mentioned so far are in new york state? >> well, it's just because there's a population there they can recruit from. but they're all across the u.s. >> okay. also in washington, d.c. and our nation's capital. >> right. well, there are several there. i'm trying to remember which one we were -- >> council on islamic nations is one? >> that's right. that's a group that basically flies to advance the islamist -- tries to advance the islamist

we have some quick headlines from the nation's capitol. so much that deal with cuba, the u.s. just negotiated the release of 53 political prisoners but two have already been re-arrested. their crime? attempting to attend a prodemocracy meeting. critics say it makes a mockery of president obama's efforts. and a top obamacare official is calling it quits. marilyn tabner recently came under fire for exaggerating obamacare sign-up numbers. and jeh johnson is warning

that friendly thanks can travel here and extremists could come here and carry out attacks. thank you. a group of parents in orange county, florida, are fighting to bring back daily recess to schools. some schools have it a couple of times a week. but parents say that is not enough. you need it daily. joining now are the parents behind the decision called recess for all. orange county public elementary school students angela browning and amy narvez. nice to see you. >> thank you for having us. >> amy, why bring this back now? >> well, i have two children. i have two daughters. one in kindergarten and one in second grade and across the nation we have seen a trend that recess is decreasing. last year my children had 60 minutes a week and this year they had 20 minutes a week. i have a 5-year-old, so i wasn't okay with that.

i just decided it was time to stop complaining to my friends and start being an advocate for my child. >> this was happening before no child left behind in chicago, but it was really the law that killed recess. some people said it's waste of time we need kids focusing on science and math and they need to get those scores up. what do you say to those people who say it's a waste of time? >> i say read the research. as we met with our school board members we have presented them with binders full of research. there are a number of organizations who have researched recess, not the least of which is the american academy of pediatrics. these organizations find it to be critical to the social, emotional, physical and academic well-being of our children. when kids get a break in the day, a short break to run and play and be kids and decompress from the rigor and the curriculum of the classroom, academics improve. and the remaining instructional time, the statistics show become more valuable, not less.

>> it's hard for me to be devil's advocate on this because i'm totally on your side. i totally agree with you, but there are some critics who say, look, p.e., we have the physical education classes that's got to be enough, right? they're out there playing dodge ball. they have a teacher supervising them. what's the difference between recess and p.e.? >> again if you read the research, p.e. is not recess. p.e. is still a time where they're led by teachers. there's an end of the course exam for p.e. in our county. they are being told to sit still and listen. they have to pay attention. it's not that time to have free play, to be creative to be social, to run, to play, and to just get the wiggles out and be kids. >> an yes what what's -- angela, what's the next battle front for you guys? >> well we are not giving up. we are going to keep the heat on the district, keep meeting with district employees. we have a request out right now to meet with the master scheduler for orange county public schools. we are going to keep meeting

that's something to see too. >> hopefully we don't fall down. thanks. and on to a quick look at your headlines. new numbers from the cdc show 19 more children have died from the flu. that brings the total since the fall to 45 in 19 states. the cdc just reported this year's vaccination is only 23% effective, but doctors still want you to get the shot saying it offers some protection. in love and on the run, two kentucky teenagers suspected of a bonnie and clyde crime spree. 13-year-old cheyenne phillips and her 18-year-old boyfriend dolphin hayes are armed and dangerous and could be staying at homeless shelters or camp site. they went missing two weeks ago. they're wanted for stealing two trucks and causing thousands of dollars in property damage. we told you how george soros

strains that are covered by the flu shot are going to emerge more. by the end of the year it will be 40%. dr. siegel predicts. but the 40% means by the way if you got the flu, you wouldn't need to be hospitalized. you wouldn't need to go running to a doctor. it's about severity of the flu. and there's very little downside, clayton, to taking the shot. so i say take it. unfortunately, it's not giving you the impact that we want this year. and that's a big, big news story. >> why isn't there a flu shot for the swiss strain? >> because they didn't predict it, they didn't predict this particular strain was going to be the prevailing strain. it's about 90% of the flu is this strain that's not covered in the shot. it is going to get a little better as the season goes on. because it's a bad flu season we really wish we had a shot that matched and right now in the works is a shot that's going to cover all strains of flu. in about three to five years it will be out. that will change the game. we need that. >> let's talk about weight gains. it goes back and forth between us and mexico as the fattest country in the world. we try all the gadgets, belts around things. there was a thing called belty,

a belt that would expand as you ate too much food. >> you love the high-tech. >> i do. and now the fda has approved a weight pacemaker that's surgically implanted and it will shock you if you eat too much? >> it's called maestro and what it does the vagus nerve says feed me, feed me, this thing blocks that nerve so your brain doesn't get signalled to feed you. you would think this would be a home run. i'm looking at the results, it's only the study shows an 8.5% improvement over a placebo. that's not a home run. even though it's done through a scope, i think the band surgery, like the rubber band surgery, lap band surgery, is better than that. so i don't -- i mean, look, you have to exercise, change your diet. you have to use the conservative measures first before you even consider a surgical procedure. this i don't think is going to replace lap band surgery. >> it doesn't work for

everybody. >> it works for some people. a great point for some people it will work. definitely doesn't work for everybody. >> okay. thank you so much on that. then there's a new blood test out that promises to help us stall our old age. this is better than botox or better than fighting the fountain of youth or will it? >> it's called the inner age. people will love that, called the inner age. it checks five things, vitamin d, glucose, testosterone inflammatory marker called crp. liver test. you know what? there's no kind of magic bullet like that. you need a doctor to interpret those things not a blood test. then the test results will say eat more turkey or eat more avocado. you know, eat more oatmeal. you need a doctor to tell you to do that. i don't think this is going to keep you young. >> you don't think that? but you think the markers are legitimate. >> especially vitamin "d" and glucose. i think everybody out there is vitamin "d" deficient.
