tucker is our one lucky gi. >> i woke up so excited to see you. >> and we have just begun. >> let's move getting. two major developments in the middle east that could have a huge huge impact on america. the government collapsed in yemen and iran-backed shiites have taken over and that could mean a greater nest of terrorist resting there. we know their al-qaeda claimed responsible for the attacks in paris. the king of saudi arabia a key ally in the united states, has died. and there are questions could his death, coupled with the collapse in yemen be a worse-case-scenario for the united states?

let's go to leland. >> reporter: yemen has never been a paragone of stability but now it is going from a dangerous place to a totally lawless place with an iranian-backed militia taking over. the embassy, according to the state department is still secure. they have pulled some united states personal out there and there are navy ships and marines on stand by in case there is an evac evacuation needed. you are watching video from the dangerous country right now. it was just a couple months ago the president said yemen was proof of his success in foreign policy. >> they are under the control of iran you have a problem in iraq

and lebanon. president obama's standing in the region is terrible. his policies are failing. if this is a success story in yemen i would hate to see failure. >> reporter: al-qaeda in yemen is the most sophisticated branch and they are there now. and the question is how they will capitalize on the chaos there. they allowed drone strike and just to yemen's north is a place of unrest and saudi arabian king died there. he was a long-time u.s. ally who was used as a counter weight to iran around the entire region. we are seeing them step up and the question is what will the saudi arabians do and the new leader in terms of keeping stability in yemen where they

gave funding and the second question is what happens to oil prices now the saudi arabian king is changing and lastly what is the cooperation going to look like for the united states from the new regime taking over. josh earnest is going to be asked how they say yemen was a success and now look what happened. >> you have great questions for our discussion. good to see you. thank you very much. that second or third question he asked is a great one a. relationship with all of the other countries in that region now that the saudi arabian king is gone. your thoughts? >> there are two lessons today. the first is the arab springs was the worst thing that could happen and that calls into question our strategy in syria which is to undermine their

against terror and $340 million later what do we have to show for it? we will probably lose our base there that we have been flying out of to make key strikes. this is a crucial time in terms of the united states foreign policy to try to get control over the situation. what successes can we point to right now? >> now we are thinking about the embassy here with ships waiting off the coast in the red sea and being prepared for any evac evacuation evacuation. >> no wonder the gop doesn't want to trust the negotiations the white house is doing with iran because of this. >> we considering them to be an ally but they have a history of anti anti-western agenda they spend millions to fund. we have energy production at home but the saudi arabian

kingdom is flooding the market and responsible for the low oil prices. when the transitions of power happen, united states energy independence is now more critical than every and our relationship and how we deal with the saudi arabia's is important. they are one of the member states that doesn't recognize the state of israel and the white house isn't meeting with israel now. we have to ask the question whose side are we on? >> there is new questions about the chaos in yemen and how it fight affect closing guantanamo bay. a ban on transferring detainees to the country has been restored. 115 citizens of yemen have been held at guantanamo bay, 36 transferred and 76 remain and three died in custody. it isn't clear how many returned transferred to the battlefield

but chuck hagel says anyone leaving guantanamo bay shouldn't be going to yemen. >> the conditions in yemen today are not any different than what they have been and we don't send them back to yemen. >> okay. so tucker the administration is saying we are not going to transfer any detainees. but did you believe this will last? does it matter? we have seen them go to qutar and uruguay. >> we have seen more detainees to yemen because more are from yemen than any other country. this is naive but why are the remaining detainees not put on trial? i have asked a lot of people. they sound like dangerous people to me who committed crimes against the united states. why not try them? i don't know the answer. but if the choice is between

sending them to a country where they are beyond our influence and we cannot monitor them it is a no-brainer >> why do we release them to begin with? they are enemies of the state. >> why isn't this an option? >> it could be. but we don't have a legal obligation to have to give them a trial. so why not hold them there? why is our president resupplying terrorist? he is resupplying jihad by letting people out he doesn't have to release because he made a political promise to the left on bended knee and can't say yemen was a success and no matter how much cash we though at them to take the yemen back who is going to do it? they are disseminating all of the intelligence officers and killing them systematically to wipe them out. and what is the result?

a couple of things there, we know speaker boehner has invited the prime minister of israel to come here in a joint meeting with congress on february 11th, and we now know the president is not expected to meet with him attend or any of that. gimp what you just -- given what you just said, does this weaken the presidency? >> okay, so full disclosure, i come from reality tv, so -- [laughter] but, listen, here's my thought on this. you know i just was talking about the president looking at foreign policy the way he wished the world was as opposed to the way it really is, all the complaining i've heard from conservatives and republicans over the last day um reminds me of the same thing. they're trying to -- this is how they wish popular culture was and not the way popular culture really is. there are millions of people in the middle of america who watch these people who watch glee, who watch the voice, and they don't know anything. this is the president being really smart taking his message to where people are at.
