factor." again, thank you for watching us tonight. ms. megyn is up next. i am bill o'reilly, please remember the spin stops here cause we are definitely looking out for you. breaking tonight ugly new fallout in the showdown between the white house and the israeli prime minister. and the stakes are very high. welcome to "the kelly file" everyone. i'm megyn kelly. today it got personal and it got angry. israeli media reports say white house officials unloaded on prime minister nenen -- netanyahu after he accepted an invitation to speak at congress. a story quoted one senior white house saying netanyahu spat in our face publicly and that's no way to behave adding that "there will be a price." charles krauthammer is here, but first trace gallagher reports
6:01 pm
live in our west coast newsroom. trace. >> megyn the white house would like to have weighed in on the netanyahu visit and does believe it's a violation of protocol, but in the end says it's up to speaker of the house john boehner to decide who addresses congress. now, that's the on-the-record version. behind the scenes the administration appears to be furious with a senior official telling the israeli newspaper, quoting again "netanyahu ought to remember president obama has a year and a half left in his presidency and that there will be a price." president obama believes netanyahu speaks to congress could rally opposition to a nuclear deal with iran undercutting years of negotiation. the president and prime minister have publicly clashed before primarily over israeli settlements in the west bank. and it's also not the first time senior administration officials have issued anonymous and acrimonious statements, even reportedly calling netanyahu a "chicken blank."
6:02 pm
"the washington post" says secretary of state john kerry is also highly offended by netanyahu's apparent disrespect. kerry has been pushing for the united nations to not set a timeline for establishing a palestinian state. and a source close to kerry says "playing politics with that relationship could blunt secretary kerry's enthusiasm for being israel's prime defender." at least during this visit there won't be any awkward public appearances between obama and netanyahu because the president won't be meeting him. apparently because it's too close to the israeli elections. listen. >> this administration goes to great lengths to ensure that we don't give even the appearance of interfering or attempting to influence the outcome of a democratically held election in another country. >> although we should note in 1996 israeli prime minister shimon perez met with president clinton within a month of his
6:03 pm
election of benjamin netanyahu. >> just before air i spoke with syndicated columnist and author of the book "things that matter" charles krauthammer who says this is a critical moment between the united states and one of our best allies. charles, your take on what appears to be a growing escalation in the war of words between the white house and the prime minister of israel and the white house's response to netanyahu's acceptance of this invitation he received from john boehner. >> what's astonishing is how personal and pech lent is the administration response reducing this to a kind of schoolyard brawl. what prompted this, i think at least on the part of the speaker of the house inviting netanyahu, is the unprecedented thing that happened just a few days earlier. even before the state of the union when the prime minister of britain was here in the united
6:04 pm
states and admitted openly to lobbying senators on the nuclear issue. and he even admitted it's unprecedented. so on the one hand you get the administration using foreign leaders to lobby congress and on the other hand you're saying that it's somehow illegitimate lack of protocol to invite the israeli prime minister. and remember the stakes are so different for the british this is sort of abstract issue possible threat down the road. for israelis this is life and death. the iranians openly declare their detention, sort of their mission, to eradicate israel. they write on their missiles, death to israel. and they are obviously developing a bomb. so for the israelis this is whether the jewish state will exist and whether another 6 million jews will be wiped out. that's a very serious issue. i think the prime minister has a right to speak on it at a very
6:05 pm
critical moment in these negotiations. >> it's clear that the white house doesn't appear to like netanyahu. not sure if netanyahu feels much for obama and kerry president obama and john kerry either. but the sort of pech lens in the response he better remember barack obama has another year and a half left in office. have relations between the united states, the white house and israel been this tense in recent history? >> no, i don't think so. i think this president has less personal sympathy for israel than any president in the history, and i think it shows. look at the way he's treated netanyahu. early in the administration long before any of this he had netanyahu leave the white house by a rear entrance the way that they have reacted whenever there's been some kind of argument over policy they
6:06 pm
immediately have made it a personal issue. and i think that's -- when you allow that to intrude -- remember, the mission that a president has is to defend and advance the national interests of the united states. and when it becomes a personal thing that gets in the way, israel is our strongest ally in the region democratic and committed to the west. iran has been responsible the deaths of thousands of americans in iraq and afghanistan. the state department itself said it's the largest biggest exporter of terrorism in the world and obama treats with utmost respect and treats israel, our ally with none. >> in the meantime iran, as you write in your column this week is on the march. this issue israel is so concerned and we say we are so concerned is greater than just iranian-israeli relations.
6:07 pm
iran is gaining power. >> the ones who are the most ap plektic about the rise of iran the fact that it looks as if obama is ready to concede to them threshold nuclear status are the gulf arabs. the arabs have no deterrent the israelis have their own bomb. the gulf arabs are very rich and extremely weak. they have rely and had have for two generations on the united states. they not only see obama essentially conceding the bomb to iran which will make it dominant and hegemonic in the entire region but they look around and see iranian influence intruding itself in a whole stretch of states going all the way from iran to the mediterranean. iraq syria lebanon and now as of yesterday yemen to their south. if you look at the map you see our friends, the gulf arabs and
6:08 pm
jordanians, they are now surrounded by iran and its satellites. and that is happening apart from the nuclear issue. and they look at this and see the united states, this is in the arab view have been abdicated and having withdrawn and now ready to go all the way and to allow iran to go nuclear. >> more with charles in a moment. breaking tonight disturbing news coming out of the nation that is home to one of al qaeda's most dangerous groups. we are getting word that the united states may have just suspended some if not all of its counterterror operations in the country of yemen. it was touted just recently by the president as an example of our counterterrorism strategy after these guys took over yesterday. breaking tonight a few months after the president touted yemen as an example of his successful counterterrorism vat strategy, reuters reporting the united states has suspended some if not all of our counterterrorism operations in yemen, home to one of al qaeda's most dangerous groups. this was the worst case scenario suggested yesterday after we learned that the government of yemen, the u.s.-friendly government of yemen has fallen and that rebels were now in control of the capital. over the last 48 hours this administration's statements suggest it has very little idea what's really going on there. >> the u.s. embassy as of today
6:13 pm
continues to remain open and functioning in yemen. the -- and the reason for that is that we have security experts on the ground in yemen who are regularly evaluating the security situation. >> we don't have a full picture right now of the political situation in yemen, nor are we in a position to predict exactly where it's going to go. >> clearly the situation is very fluid on the ground, but we'll be watching closely over the course of the next coming days. >> live in washington with the breaking news. leland. >> yemen has never exactly been a paragon of stability, but in the past 36 hours it's gone from merely dangerous to lawless and chaotic. up until this week their intelligence services cooperated with the cia and others in the fight against terror -- the folks we used to call may not be picking up the phone anymore. the pentagon admits they really don't have a clear picture of who if anyone is in charge and
6:14 pm
for that matter the true intentions of the iranian-backed militia appears to control the capital of sanaa. a large compound and well-guarded fort is secure. as we speak the u.s. says iwo jima could fight their way in. the u.s. military also has substantial resources in jabudi. long served as a breeding and training ground for al qaeda and now home to one of its most powerful branches if not it's most sophisticated aqap. last year alone the u.s. carried out 23 drone strikes against terrorist targets with the help of yemen security forces. and the obama administration considered its recently resigned president a key ally in the fight against terror. certainly lyly --
6:15 pm
>> certainly a willing partner in yemen and anywhere around the world makes missions like that much more effective. there's no question about it. we've also proven the ability to go after terrorists in various places around the world unilaterally. and we will still retain that right, that responsibility. >> and this is where the geography is key. given its critical location along the gulf of aden and the shores on the choke point leading up the canal, yemen has proved a prize very much worth fighting for. if the iranian -- consolidating power it would drastically, megyn, change not only the tactical map of the middle east but the strategic map as well. >> leland vittert, thank you. as leland reported it is not clear what these rebels want or what will happen next but we can tell you tonight these guys are not fans of either israel or the united states. watch.
6:16 pm
[ inaudible ] >> so despite displays like that when the state department today was asked about this group now in control and the threat it poses, jen psaki found a bright side. earlier i asked charles krauthammer about this exchange right here. >> they do on occasion get a chant death to america and that kind of thing. it's not as if they haven't expressed anti-american sentiment in the past. >> well obviously not. as i mentioned we continue to assess our security needs every day. regardless of what's been said. but it is important to note that just this week they stated that was not their intention. >> so quite the chants of death of america they didn't really mean it. that was just bluster. >> exactly. now, i would rely on that. you bet my house and my family and my future on those assurances. look the detachment from reality of this administration on the consequences of its policy of retreat is truly
6:17 pm
staggering. in the state of the union address the president said that we are denying safe havens to terrorists. we are? we got the largest safe haven in the history of the arab-islamic radicalism in the middle of the middle east with the islamic state. we have got al qaeda in iraq and yemen. and now there is no government in yemen that is dedicated to helping us in fighting them. we have got of course in pakistan and afghanistan on the border and a huge safe haven libya now is completely antarctic to the point where you've got terror groups operating openly and independently, all of north africa. and the president actually imagines that we are shrinking the space in which terrorists are acting. and that's what worries you when you hear that talk about yemen they don't really mean it. we're still assessing the situation.
6:18 pm
the saudis live in the region. the saudis are next door. the saudis are scared to death surrounding them. and they know exactly what's happening in yemen. and they know who's behind the rebels. and that's why they are afraid. because not only are they dedicated to death to america and to israel, they also are dedicated to destroying the saudi regime and all of the pro-american regimes in the region. that's a problem. >> so these are the folks who are now running yemen but also in yemen is one of our biggest adversaries, enemies which is al qaeda. >> right. >> and the question is who's minding the shop. because the white house, the state department, the pentagon they all seem very caught off guard by the fact that the u.s. government alied in yemen collapsed. and we're going to have to evacuate from the u.s. embassy and how strongly alive is this new death to america government and how effective will they be
6:19 pm
at stopping al qaeda -- i realize they hate al qaeda too. but they kind of really want to bring death to america. it seems disconcerting that the white house is -- i don't know we're still assessing, we can't confirm. >> they were equally surprised when the islamic state, when isis rolled into iraq and took over a third of the country within a matter of weeks including the second largest city. remember, obama had just said it was a jayvee team. >> it was a year ago this week he said that. >> it's astonishing that a president would get that so wrong. but their perception is always -- look, obama's idea is that the country went wrong by reacting overstrongly to 9/11 by being a bully, by opening up these prisons by guantanamo. and he would come in and he would allow the world to see a different america. and he put us openly and essentially deliberately into
6:20 pm
retreat thinking that's the way to rectify our relations. the results are that of the '30s and as they always are, when you go into retreat when you try to appease your enemies, the vacuum does not stay in a vacuum and have come the iranians, have come al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and now of course isis in the heart of the middle east. and that is a result of his policy. >> charles krauthammer, great to see you. thanks for being here tonight. >> pleasure. dangerous winter weather is racing up the east coast right now with millions about to get snow ice, freezing rain or all three. a live report on what that means right after this break. and then one of the possible republican candidates for president today made news with a bare knuckle attack on his rival. the man throwing the punches is here live. plus breaking news from the cdc on a measles outbreak that is now spreading. started at disney.

breaking tonight, dangerous winter weather racing across the country putting the east coast in its crosshairs. right now the storm over the mid-atlantic and on the move. ak weather reporter has the very latest. justin. >> yeah, megyn that's right. low pressure will be crashing the party over much of the mid-atlantic and into the northeast. but it will be a quick mover. 12 to 24 hours of wind and snow and then i think we will recover later on this weekend. but it's in the short-term that we are concerned about some heavier snow along the mason-dixon line.
6:25 pm
d.c., baltimore had a little mixing early on. rain and a little bit of snow as the storm system pulls away. on the order of a coating to an inch or so. the heavier snow targeting interstate 81 into poconos where we could be topping even eight inches of snow. give it a couple hours and the snow will be coming down at a very heavy clip. peak in intensity later on saturday evening and saturday night. north of boston into central maine. and this is where i'm concerned about blizzard conditions which will blow and drift the snow around and the potential like i said of 6 to 12 inches. a big storm, megyn. >> certainly sounds like it. justin, thank you. also breaking tonight the centers for disease control considering a multistate measles outbreak and warning doctors to be aware. we understand the majority of the sick had not been vaccinated
6:26 pm
against measles. leading critics to question whether the anti-vaccine movement is partially to blame. trace gallagher reports from our west coast newsroom. trace. >> megyn measles is certainly making a comeback in the u.s. and health officials say the primary reason is people can now choose to be exempt from rules that say their kids must get shots to enroll in school. in that disney-related outbreak there are now 51 confirmed cases in seven states. we're talking california oregon, arizona utah washington, colorado nebraska and one in mexico. the vast majority of those who got sick had not gotten their mmr vaccine those who choose to not have their children vaccinated believe there's a link between the vaccine and autism. the centers for disease control says that research that allegedly found the link has widely been discredited yet doctors say the scare has had a profound impact around the country. listen. >> unfortunately, now it's
6:27 pm
estimated that about one in ten people in some parts of this country do not have adequate immunity to measles. >> now, those who support a parent's right to decide what's best for their children say it's unfair to blame unvaccinated people for the disney outbreak because some unvaccinated people also got sick. doctors say the first vaccination is only 95% effective and kids over 4 should get a second vaccine. authorities believe someone from a country that does not require vaccines brought the disease to disney and it spread from there. people who have not been vaccinated and went to disney or california adventure should look for symptoms. disney is apparently the perfect place to spread the virus because it attracts all ages from all countries or as "los angeles times" says, it's a small world after all. >> oh, boy. this is disneyland out in disney world where we just were, my family and myself, not affected

saying today senator rubio has told us to proceed as if he is running for president. former senator rick santorum who has run for president has -- for lack of experience. 2012 iowa primary winner and possible 2016 candidate senator, good to see you tonight. so you attacked senator rubio for his lack of experience also said the same about ted cruz and rand paul which also led to mike huckabee coming out and saying you had pulled the pin on grenades tossed in the gop -- your response. >> i was just remarking at a time when we have very very serious national security issues that it's important to have someone with experience in those areas. just pointed out the facts that there's not too many people out there who are contemplating running for president who have that kind of experience. and i think we've seen from this president that having experience
6:33 pm
in national security, having a track record that people can look to and having some grounding in those issues is really important for an office that's probably the number one priority of the president, certainly the area that he has the most purview when it comes to running our government. >> what about somebody saying it needs to be a governor not a senator. >> i don't know too many governors with national security experience. i was eight years on the armed services committee, passed major pieces of legislation dealing with syria and iran when i was in the united states senate. i think having that kind of track record, i think having dealt with these issues for long-term, knowing and understanding how the military operates, knowing and working on foreign issues for a long time particularly since 9/11 is i think a very important credential that people need to look at. >> i mention governor huckabee, if you run this time you and he may duke it out for more evangelical voters and maybe even sarah palin will join that
6:34 pm
field because she came out today and said, yes, she's considering it. >> yeah. oh, look, having been out here in iowa, i'm in iowa today and traveled the country. i encourage everybody to run for president. i think it's one of the coolest things in the world to do. it re-energized me. it made me believe even more in the greatness of our country. i think getting out here and meeting voters and seeing how much people care about this country and want to make changes to improve the quality of lives. >> i know, i know. but with respect to talking points -- >> it's good stuff. no it is. >> how is it good for you instead of governor huckabee? >> i just made one point earlier in the interview and there are others. the fact is we've had a very, very strong record of going out there and working for folks who have been left behind. i made that argument in 2012 talking about how we had to have blue collar voters on our team from all across ethnic and racial lines, that we have to be the party not just of pro-growth
6:35 pm
but pro-worker. we need to be a pro-worker party because those are the folks suffering in america today. and we need to help them and target our policies to make sure they have a chance at the american dream. >> remember you won the iowa caucuses last time around. first said mitt romney had won, that stunted your momentum, but you won. if you won this time who knows what will happen. senator santorum, thank you sir. joining us now to analyze how the gop field is shaping up marc thiessen head speech writer to george w. bush, now american enterprise institute fellow and kirsten powers columnist at "usa today." marc, okay, if some in the gop field think they need a governor and not a senator, what about senator santorum's point that not many governors have foreign policy experience? >> well first of all i like rick santorum a lot and i have a lot of respect for him. this is nothing against rick
6:36 pm
santorum, but ronald reagan didn't serve on the armed services committee. he was governor before he became president of the united states. and the job of the commander in chief is to be a decider. you want somebody who's a decider with that experience. on top of that i think we need to realize something the obama era, this may come as a surprof your viewers, the obama era has been a golden age of conservative governance in america. not in washington but in the states. we now have in the last -- since barack obama took office there are more republican governors and more republican state legislators than any time since the 1920s. we went from eight states where we had a republican governor or republican legislator when barack obama ran in 2008 to 24 today. >> wow. >> so what that means is you've got all these republican governors out there while barack obama's discrediting big government liberalism in washington, republican governors are implementing conservative reforms, getting them passed, making a difference in people's lives. the smart thing to do for the party would be to take one of those outsiders, one of those proven reformer and make their
6:37 pm
standard. >> kirsten, what do you make last time around there were many they beat up on each other for so long that mitt romney emerged damaged. already the grenades are getting lobbed as governor huckabee points out. >> well i think that depends on whoever emerges out of it sort of depends on how they dealt with it. because barack obama got pretty beaten up as well by having to duke it out with hillary clinton. but it actually ended up helping him. it made him a better general election candidate. i think the problem here is that you're going to have so many people -- if all these people actually run, that you could end up will depend on who the standard bearer ends up winning and -- >> what do you think of sarah palin? do you think she means what she's saying she might actually run? >> i have no idea. i don't predict anymore. >> all right. >> learned my lessons on that. but i think it would be great for the field to have a woman in it. >> look at the picture. look at this.
6:38 pm
>> i do hope there will be -- >> not one woman. >> yeah. >> really? really gop? not one? marc, let me ask you this we've had 70 of the gop candidates on the show this week. we polled a couple potential candidates. we pulled a couple highlights. you tell me your thoughts on who emerged the victor. -- hello. >> i'm sorry. >> i'm waiting for my control room to run the montage. please, hello. >> the way you stop the school bully is you put your fist in his face and you put his butt on the ground. >> in spite of this president, the people of america have gone out and worked through policies that he's put into place that have actually killed jobs, kept things from happening. >> any time you have freedom loving people anywhere around the world who are under attack by radical islamic terrorists, it's a threat to all of us.
6:39 pm
>> with big government under the obama administration, the rich and powerful, those who walk the corridors of power in the obama administration have gotten fat and happy. >> i've heard about a lot of free stuff but i didn't hear about how he's going to pay for it. you got to wonder about the guy's sincerity. >> marc. >> i think almost any one of them -- almost any one of them, would be betder than hillary clinton. >> all right. stick to the gop. everybody knows you feel that way. >> but i think my case is in looking at those candidates i think a governor -- there's two governors -- three governors in that mix. a governor would be better for a very important reason is that we're going -- assuming we run against hillary clinton which is going to be a democratic nominee, the way to beat hillary clinton is to paint her as a creature of washington. she came to washington in 1992 and never left. been there 25 years, first lady, senator, secretary of state. you want to pick somebody an outsider, a reformer who's going to come in -- washington has never been less popular than it is today. you want to pick an outsider to
6:40 pm
take her on as a candidate of washington. and i think of those people who are there the governors are the best people to do it. >> kirsten watching special report earlier tonight, charles krauthammer put his biggest bet on marco rubio. and steve hayes put a significant bet on marco rubio saying he's young, fresh faced and exciting. if they put him up against hillary clinton who is older and been around washington for longer it would be a beneficial contrast for the gop. >> that's something i've heard from a lot of republicans and also from democrats who work with senator rubio that he is extremely impressive. and i think could be underestimated because with his views and because of the fact that, you know, people are -- >> what do you make of governor walker? >> again he's something who i think is very popular among republicans. you know i don't know at this point that he's necessarily popping out of the field, but it's so early. i think we would have to sort of see how -- i think in the people
6:41 pm
you just showed that my opinion rand paul is the one that's probably the most interesting. >> oh. >> because i think as much as he is to marc's point about the outsider, as much as he is in washington he still sort of plays that outsider role. and i think that that's something that's appealing to a lot of people. >> starting to happen. it's interesting to watch. great to see both of you. have a great weekend. >> thanks, megyn. heartbreak for afghanistan and iraq war veteran after the american flag he donated to a school is torched. but wait until you see what he did in response. and, up next phil houston, former cia interrogator a polygraph examiner and author of the book "spy the lie" is here on whether he thought tom brady was telling the truth when the quarterback said this. >> can you answer right now, is tom brady a cheater? >> i don't believe so. i mean, i feel like i've always played within the rules. i would never do anything to break the rules.
