tv Media Buzz FOX News January 25, 2015 2:00pm-3:01pm PST
2:00 pm
on azzbeathis >> on the buzz beater, the press tackles the patriots and coach belichick and the quarterback over alleges the team cheated its way into the super bowl by underdelfating the football. is this overblown? >> is tom brady a cheater? >> i don't think so. >> i did not believe what tom had to say. the bulls were deflighted. someone had to do it. >> are the media treating this like a full pledged scandal. >> president obama takes on the pundits for spreading cynicism and pushes back over his state of the union. >> the past six years pundits
2:01 pm
have pointed out more than once that my presidency hasn't delivered. >> president calling for compromise and blasting presidents and vowing to block bipartisan ideas, some of them. >> like a ballplayer shooting from beyond the three point lean he gave it his best for history. >> critic say a disconnect between a liberal speech and the call for bipartisanship. >> this burning question: why does the president sit down with this youtube sensation? and a day buy as america's only black host at might and goes after al sharpton and bill cosby. >> everyone is piling on cosby including me but consider for a second if he didn't do it. okay, we are done. >> can he say things that the white guys can't? this is "media buzz."
2:02 pm
>> the president loves the pundits which is hardly the usual for the "state of the union" address after spending much of the speech on a wish list of tax-and-spending programs, he called for both parties to cooperate with a not so veiled shot at phony stores he sees permeating the coverage of washington. >> better politics is a word we debate without demonizing each other, where we talk issues and values and principles and facts rather than gotcha moments or trivial gaffes or fate controversies that have nothing to do with people's daily lives. >> some praised the speech many thought it was diversed from reality. >> it is highly partisan basically saying, here, i am santa claus and will give you these wonderful presents and we know seige is going to take they will away.
2:03 pm
>> when he says you are not for my approach, he is saying you are in a sense evil and he decries polarization. he made absolutely no acknowledgment that all of the proposals he was suggesting have absolutely industry chance of passing. >> joining us to examine the coverage is a contributor at the hill and former campaign manager joe trippi nor howard dean. lauren, the press treated this as a speech from make believe. eight was from make believe man less than a snowball's chance in hell that anything he was talking about will be passed by a republican-led congress. >> why there were --. >> people love to talk, is this the best chief he gave? what will elizabeth warren think? it is not the merits of the proposal. >> the headlines were upbeat "new york times" defiantly pushing the agenda, broad
2:04 pm
vision, and "politico" "leading from the front, again." some likes it. >> lauren could be right in the sense that it may have been the best speech he ever gave but he has been practicing it for seven years because it is the same speech he has been giving time and time again. >> that is not what i said. >> i say that. >> it is recycles from 100 other speech he has given. he spent the climax dedicated to quoting himself from ten careers. >> okay, let's go to trippi. >> recycled. a lot of liberal pundits love the content and the white house i am told doesn't view free community college or minimum wage hike oz sick leave as provoke different proposals but you know this is not going to
2:05 pm
pass. >> that is the point to lay out an agenda. he was on the offensive which is what i took from the speech, good or bad, he was clearly on the offensive and -- some republicans would say it was offensive -- but the point is it puts republicans on and even the way the media covered it puts republicans on their back foot in terms if they wrote down everything he wants to do it is --. >> they not even couple up for a vote. >> the g.o.p. controls both houses. >> what about president obama taking on as we saw the pundits talking about trivial controversies in the media culture. >> this is an attack dog president. when he doesn't like what people are saying he will turn on the media and by name. he has done that to fox news several times saying fox news says this or that as if he
2:06 pm
doesn't think of anything but fox news. >> at msnbc chris matthews responded to the passage saying, he made a mistake about cable television and a lot of people who have hoped and shared his hope for ending racial division and malala yousafzai. >> the networks support president obama, is that breaking news? >> so, let me turn now to half of the speech with politicians coming out and giving their take on it so joe biden came out on a couple of shows and he was asked, are you running in 2016 and he is looking at it. at the conservative cattle call in iowa, sarah palin toll the "washington post" reporter she is seriously considering a run in 2016. >> yes. >> my question, how seriously should the media take that? >> as seriously as -- look, if she decided to run, she would get considerable share of votes in places like iowa and not so
2:07 pm
much in new hampshire, probably do okay in south carolina if she had a good team and well organized and taking it seriously. sarah palin creates some of her own problems to be sure but she also is constantly underestimated from people. she has a huge following and a lot of quarters of the right and if she is serious you can take it seriously. >> two words: donald trump. >> he was in iowa. >> this is a woman would wants to make sure she is out there and in the public spotlight, not so much whether she will actually --. >> donald trump has a long record of pretending he will run for president and people take him seriously including people at this network that drive me crazy. donald trump is a bain of humanity i think. having said that but sarah palin hasn't done this over and over. >> but she has done -- not taken action to make it look like she
2:08 pm
is serious about this and the press did not cover that. >> let's talk about her unfavourability rating in a president conducted last year around the governor and the senate elect in alaska, she, the poll also considered whether if she ran what her chances would be of winning against huckabee, against rand paul against others and no way in heck is she going to win. >> i will --. >> i am not the only person to be excited about this. the media would love to see her in the race. >> i will take sarah palin seriously not as a political figure but as a presidential presidential candidate when she gives up the fox news contributing contract which ben carson and mike huckabee did when they were serious. briefly, reporters have to ask, joe biden, are you running and he has to say that because he wants to not be a lame duck.
2:09 pm
>> they have to ask, but, two, i think he still wants to run for president. why think he will but i think he wants to try to keep that door open. >> what vice president won't? >> something that is hard to understand, there is one person in the world who takes joe biden really, really seriously and maybe only one person and that is joe biden. >> the situation were different if hillary clinton were not up by 85 percents. >> there was news on ferguson a huge story last wherever and "new york times" reporting that the justice department is the lead story, justice department lawyers will recommend "no civil rights charges," be brought in the killing of michael brown and the cox was spotty. why is that? >> the coverage of the actual "new york times" story -- reuters picked it up. my problem is, law enforcement officials said there were anonymous sources that were used as the only basis for fact.
2:10 pm
>> you are saying you have a problem with how solid the report was or does that make it more difficult for other news organizations that did not have the sources telling them that to treat it as a continue deal? >> cbs has their own sources and reported more than "new york times" did. there was another organization that was able to say there were 200 pieces of evidence examined. >> cbs evening news was the lead story, and abc world news gave it a couple of sentences but do you think some in the press are playing this down or is it more that the story is fluid? >> probably they are disappointed and at the same time --. >> you are saying the press is rooting for civil rights charges against officer wilson? >> it is beyond ridiculous to say the press wasn't overwhelmingly on one side of the narrative going back to the early days. >> even after additional information came out about
2:11 pm
michael brown? >> the facts are -- the general enthusiasm on one side of the story is obvious. this is probably been leak bit justice department to lessen the blow of the disappointment of the sharpton and msnbc crowd because it is embarrassing the way holder went in guns blazing in the early days and they have to let the air out of the bubble. >> this want a huge surprise joe, very huge people expected federal civil right because you have to prove the officer intended to violate his sifts. >> jonam is right about the small leak that has been going out from the very beginning including that the level of what you need to do to charge this isn't there and the justice department leaking it now and also, i think that is why some of the media coverage has been so limited. you do not have -- until there
2:12 pm
10 definitive ruling and it actually happens, we will see if that happens. >> my problem is, again with the anonymous sources angle of this everyone in washington you are not anyone until you have been a military source law enforcement official, anone spousally. it doesn't mean it is untrue but why do it before the report is actually final? whybly the game? that is my point. >> that could be a reason the coverage is spotty. you have a good point, if this holds up and it is announced it will seem like we already had it. >> we want to hear from you and do not for get on twitter be as well. we always read some of your messages. >> ahead the constant coverage of the patriots tampering allegations. the president sits down with the youtube personalities like this woman.
2:13 pm

2:16 pm
president obama sat down with three youtube personalities the other day, people who are often talking about farts or wallowing in a bath of milk and cereal. here is some of what happened. >> my mama says don't come empty handed. so i have green lipstick, one for dwouryour first wife -- >> my first? do you know something i don't? >> oh, for the first lady and the first children. >> so obamacare -- >> obamacare has worked.
2:17 pm
>> if you have any super power what would it be? >> what super power would you like to have? i'm fine with president obama going on ellen, "the view," colbert, but it seemed like a low rent district. >> absolutely. although i've heard equally dumb questions from barbara walters about what kind of tree you want to be and that kind of stuff. it is not like youtube are the only ones who ask stupid questions. >> there were good questions that i did that expect would be good questions. very serious questions despite the antics that happened. i think -- i would like at some point to see what it would be like if we were to go back to pre-civil war era where anybody could just walk into the white house and talk to the president and ask a question. that's kind of what this was like. >> well, i think this woman glozell green, even made fun of
2:18 pm
the bathtub scene, but she'll have her own netflix show soon but one thing that bothered me is the way that they were all gushing over him and the woman bethany mota, she said that's awesome. >> but that's his m.o. right now. let's go around the mainstream media so i don't have to talk about what i don't want to talk about. let's create our own videos and push then out to the press. >> but it wasn't in lieu of mainstream media. >> did the president give another weekinterview that i missed? >> no but he was in there -- he gave his speech the entire country on the mainstream -- >> and then hung out with glozell green. >> and all the pundits weighed in on what they thought. and then he hung out with millennials which by the the way they don't watch the state of the union. >> i get that. and it got certainly 2 million
2:19 pm
views by now. but this was the lowest rated state of the union in 15 years. but what does this get him in terms of advancing his agenda? >> it gets him a wider audience you cannot do -- if you try to do the state of the union where you only talk to the three old television networks, you'd be losing fox msnbc, cnn, everybody else. >> so you're all for this. >> absolutely. >> i happen to think that since he got trounced in the midterms, i think anything goes for this guy right now. it doesn't matter if he's interviewed by someone with green lipstick. so what. as he told us, already won two campaigns. >> so you're saying he just is having fun. glozell green did that like some of the media criticism, so there is a tweet she posted have to love fox news. if you can see that. two screens there one of her in the bathtub, one talking to the president of the united states. so this woman knows how to fight back. >> good for her for fighting back.
2:20 pm
but she also really blew it when she called him his first wife. >> but it's all about moments. >> all about going viral and all that nonsense. and, look, again, you said why didn't he do 60 mints or he didn't do "60 minutes". i can't remember the 60 mints has done a tough interview with barack obama. he only likes to talk to people who think he's awesome. and even "60 minutes" doesn't cut it anymore. >> well, i hope will goes viral since we're talking thanks for stopping by. lady, late knee's only black comic takes on al sharpton. but up next no go zones in europe and more than one network is involved. fast if you're suffering from constipation

2:24 pm
she might sue fox news for its reporting on the so-called no-go zones. this would be a frivolous lawsuit since you can't real libel a city. the network apologized for regrettable errors. the comments about a nonexistent no-go zone this birmingham were made by a guest who has apologized, but there were other mistakes, as well. while cnn has had a fine time reporting on what happened at fox, turns out the network used the same terminology and who were once. >> anderson, the europeans and french in particular have problems that are the result of also 751 no-go zones in fraps
2:25 pm
where you have islamic communities that have formed councils that are managing these areas. >> we've seen it in sweden, in england, here in france. there are kind of no-go zones where people don't even really go into. and it does cut both ways. >> the media except for the "washington post" mostly gave cnn a pass. but this week anderson cooper to his credit stepped up and admitted he'd been wrong. >> i think if you're going to point fingers at other people's mistakes, should you also acknowledge your own mistakes and we didn't do that on the program. in the wake of the paris attacks, several guests mentioned no-go zones in france. i didn't challenge them and twice referred to them, as well. i should have been more skeptical. >> that was a good step. but it's worth noting there is a history here. french newspaper has referred to one area as a veritable no-go zone where nonmuslims are being forced to move out.
2:26 pm
and one where you can no longer order a pizza or get a why to come to the horseuse. "newsweek" reported there were 150 no-go zones. and in 2002, a columnist wrote some suburbs have become no-go zones at night. none of this to say that fox or cnn should have corrected their report, but a reminder that when it's all 00 easy to oversimply guy, the subject is complicated. coming up, the press inflates the patriots football tampering in to a huge scandal. is the sports press getting even with coach bill belichick. and later, a black correspondent makes his solo debut and takes aim at bill comessby and reverend al.
2:30 pm
hour or so we have been showing this coming together. here is the latest. a storm of epic proportions taking aim at the northeast. just in the past hour we learned the blizzard watches for tomorrow are now warnings and they begin earlier in the day than first reported. now by 1:00 o'clock p.m. eastern 50 million people from pennsylvania to maine are in the past of what new york city's mayor called "historic." >> my message to all new yorkers is to republic for something worse than we have seen before. prepare toen safe. >> in fact as this moves in from the midwest, the entire region is bracing. power outages are expected. 65 miles per hour wind, some places could see 20-30" of snow and close to 3'. watch for complete coverage on the fox report at 7:00 p.m. eastern. >> the resolution cannot stand
2:31 pm
new england coach belichick and "new york times" said he should get the boot. if the team underinflated the footballs before clobbering indianapolis. he denies any knowledge but was not expansive with reporters. >> in your investigation, did you find whether anyone --. >> i told you everything i know. >> coach, what do you say --. >> i don't have any of -- any explanation much i have told you everything i know. >> please make it stop. >> tom brady was smoother. >> things will be fine this is not sis, no one is dying. we will get through this. >> joining us from atlanta
2:32 pm
sports columnist for "new york magazine," and in philadelphia, sports anchor at fox affiliate wt." x. will, no one died as brady said. the media are treating this as the biggest scandal since watergate. why? >> you are seeing isis second on newscast after this. a lot of this, it is the patriots and people dislike the patriots and have been after them. it is like an o.j. situation they feel like they got off the first time but better obey the law from then on because everyone is waiting for temperature to make up. they are -- if it happened, the smallest competitive edge is people dislike bowl -- belichick and the patriots. every super bowl need as story. last year was it richard sherman and the year before the harbaughs. that is the story this year.
2:33 pm
>> i thought i would have to quips you it was about the country hating the patriots and tom brady is the biggest quarterback in the league. is this -- if it involved the seattle quarterback, would not of the media care? >> it is not just about russell wilson and the media would believe him because it is the patriots this have cheated. it is not a first time offense. if seattle was first time it would be different. i like tom brady. liked tom brady. but he is pinocchio. he is lying. >> how do you know he is lying? how do you know? you conducted your own investigation? >> he said "i don't think i was cheating," and then "l i never
2:34 pm
cheated." >> please, spare me. he is not honest with us. i have not played the position of quarterback at the professional level. as a kid i did, obviously however, you know when you touch a football, i don't no if you two play golf when i pick up a different club or hit a difference golfball i know the different and i am not a pro. he knows the feel of the football after laying 20 years. i do not believe brady for a second and belichick lied before and he is lying before. >> if you do not follow closely in 2007 belichick had to pay a fine because they were using video tape to steal the defensive signals from the opposing team. you both admitted to a shocking degree of anti patriots bias in the mainstream media. i still have to ask even if the resolution and the country outside of massachusetts doesn't
2:35 pm
lick the patriots, the breaking news banners that say, waiting tom brady news conference and the confrontational atmosphere at the news yens it seems over-the-top. >> people went to watch them doing it. belichick has the press conference and is famous for the press conferences, the nonanswers and paying no attention to the question so he is fun to see now that he has been so antagonistic more than brady, he has been so antagonistic to the media for some time that people love to see him get in trouble and want to see him taken down. i don't think there is any question. howard brings up a good point this is something that is not just the media. people in football do not like belichick and a lot of it, i find it charming that everyone cannot believe someone would do something unfair in sports.
2:36 pm
the idea he is the only person that has ever done anything like this is amusing. people do not like belichick. they enjoy seeing him under the lights. >> slipping in a question, tom brady is may and when he says my balls are perfect, with twitter feeds exploding. >> that is clear i want to touch on belichick. early in the week he did not have any ideas abut the footballs and later in the week he does not call news conferences voluntarily and suddenly he calls and know about science and ball pressure and he brought up a point this are two points to make that are important. one was about tire pressure. people in the cold rejoins know the tire pressure goes down but it was 51 degrees at the game. it doesn't go down. we miss the we point it is not just about indianapolis game.
2:37 pm
this has been going on for a while. >> running out of time. i have to go this is not lance armstrong winning all of the titles through dope. this is not mcguire and bonds using steroids or ray rice decking his fiance but a minor infraction at best. >> you would think but the way the nfl work they react more to public opinion than to honor or ethics code. the question is, how angry are people? are they ray rice angry or concussion angry? right now the more people are angry you could see something done but people find it more amusing and the ball jokes funny but the average man, it is a fun diversion until the game next week. >> a juicy story and it mate it on last night open "saturday night live." tom brady on snl. >> did you have anything to do
2:38 pm
with deflating the footballs? me? absolutely not! honestly. i wasn't even aware that fabs could be inflighted or deflate deflateed. >> thanks for helping us deflate this story. >> my huckabee unloads on beyonce and wonder why anchors keep asking him about it. you're here to buy a car. what would help is simply being able to recognize a fair price. that's never really been possible. but along comes a radically new way to buy a car called truecar. now it is. truecar has pricing data on every make and model so all you have to do is search for the car you want there it is. now you're an expert in less than a minute. this is how car buying was always meant to be.
2:42 pm
larry wilmore made his comedy central this week on what is being called the nightly show. but as the only black host in late night it was interest to go watch as he promptly took on one of his own. >> wiere we a >> larry wilmore took on one of his own. >> i wish there was an expert that could take on one of us. >> there is an emergency meeting in hollywood to discuss possible action around the academy awards. >> sharpton? again? i mean, no one else can represent them? al, slow down, do you not have to respond to every emergency. you are not black batman. >> a racial fire chief. >> a fight later, he went off
2:43 pm
good morning who was an african-american icon. >> the better question is, why are people people listening for the people because it happened so long ago? is it pots some of them went to his hotel room and there are no polar its? because she so famous? or just because they are women? because i would say enough has come forward, the occurrent tally stands...the current tally stands at 35 women. really, folk service how many more do we need? >> joining us from palm springs california is fox news contributor and here in washington dc, syndicated radio talk show host. richard, starting with reverend al, larry whacks sharpton. does this have an extra sting coming from an african-american? >> not at all. it is flattering to be depicted and betrayed it mean you are doing something right.
2:44 pm
for wilmore the goal of the slow is to get ratings and to show he has a dominance in late night television and going after your own is a great way to do it. this was funny and i am sure the reverend laughed. >> he has to get laughs but wilmore made a serious point about sharpton jumping into every racial controversy most recently the oscar nomination. >> look, one of the things that the "washington post" did this week is the "washington post" said in this question-and-answer with larry, that larry was going to go after really people who were politically incorrect the biggestfullies is the show "politically incorrect," and i think he is going after low-hanging fruit. this is not something that is too risky. however, it has been risky positive "saturday night live," and for jon stewart but there is a variety piece the other side,
2:45 pm
a variety piece where they talk about risks that larry is taking by putting people in the hotseat and being politically incorrect. what it will send the message to hollywood publicists they should not sit in the seat and it is too risky and not safe what is called the "no-go zone," and there is a risk. >> he has for balance the we guests to get ratings and being seen as topical and taking risks. here is wilmore taking on another black comic bill cosby an icon and see believes the 35 women who say he is a sexual predator, not that others have not said it before but is emphatic. >> there are those out there changing their opinion about bill cosby but i want to make a point that there is a departure from reality. bill cosby could be a creep but what he has done for american culture is the opposite it has
2:46 pm
been remarkable what they have portrayed. >> might be a creepst 35 swim a last women. >> but it is a departure from reality saying what he has done frescoes by show and for the african-american and america the after camp american families. >> why is why it is so sad and it has been tarnished. going after him as low hanging fruit. it is a big story. >> it is extremely low-hanging fruit the fact that he is going after al sharpton and president obama when he said, can't we criticize a black president? he is saying the things that a lot of people have been saying for six years. the idea that larry wilmore is getting publicity criticize the low hanging truth is more of a commentary on "saturday night live," which has been unable to make fun of president obama very offend and jon stewart. those are the places where
2:47 pm
people are safe to go and send hollywood publicists and their clients. >> i beg to differ all the late night comics have poked fun at the president. all of the heavies have poked fun at him and george w. bush. but that is their.be to bring levity to the hard day of news and larry wilmore does it artfully in how we talk abuttal sharpton and bill cosby. it is about being seen. i agree that is the job of late night. let's be honest, "saturday night live," and jon stewart are safe places for liberals to go we foe their politics. what larry did this week, he showed that politically incorrect humor is going to be what he goes after. it is not going to be a safe place for anyone and it remains to be seen if the media and the
2:48 pm
money embrace that. >> that is healthy. >> low happening fruit. thank you, gentleman for joining us. >> mike huckabee is running for president a job more important than hosting a fox show so why is everyone asking about beyonce? en it comes to good nutrition...i'm no expert. that would be my daughter -- hi dad. she's a dietitian. and back when i wasn't eating right, she got me drinking boost. it's got a great taste and it helps give me the nutrition i was missing. helping me stay more like me. [ female announcer ] stay strong, stay active with boost.
2:51 pm
mike huckabee is aggressively looking at a presidential bid. that's why he gave up his fox news show and the most important issue facing the country is beyonce. that's because he's pushing his book, god, guns grits and gravy and the media can't resist his siren song against the superstar. >> what do you got against beyonce? >> nothing.
2:52 pm
>> no, come on now. >> she is half a page in a 24-page -- >> you are pushing beyonce. >> no. >> i can't even -- >> here's the point. you could not repeat the lyrics. >> you view that as a sort of a permissiveness that you think is not great for our children. is that correct? >> well, it was one page out of a 240 -- >> i understand but it's representative -- >> you know when a parent says honey if you make really good grades some day when you're 12 or 13 we'll get you your own stripper pole. come on, john, we don't do that. >> i think that's diminishing beyonce. >> this is what i said and it was a simple illustration, half a page in a 270 page book and i'm thinking my gosh it's all i've heard about this. >> here's the deal. i'm not buying huckabee's oh, it's just a half page. the ex-governor knew when he put that in the book when he ripped beyonce for raunchy lyrics, when he said her husband jay-z was
2:53 pm
exploiting her as a sex object he knew it would be catnip for the press. and it worked brilliantly. so enjoy the musical debate, governor. you earned it. now you may have heard something about ted cruz shaping his own response to the state of the union and putting it on youtube. when folks checked it out they found out, well the texas senator had run into a little glitch. >> median incomes have stagnated. for over a decade. >> tonight, america saw a powerful demonstration that it is time to move on beyond president barack obama. >> you know something? every television actor in the business has done that. in fact i once did that and the whole tape complete with the oops, that was awful let's start over aired on tv. now cruz clearly needs a better video editor on his staff. those of us who make a living in front of the cameras cut the guy some slack. your top tweet bryant gumbel
