morning. martha: new york city leaders say this will be one of the worst blizzards people have ever seen. >> you are talking about 135-mile-an-hour gusts of winds. it's like being out in the polar during the storms. >> it's important to focus on safety the next few days. don't underestimate this storm. >> stocking up for the blizzard apocalypse that's going to happen. >> i don't believe you guys. there is nothing coming. it's going to bypass new york. martha: how it's look out there rick? >> reporter: snow started falling before dawn. it's not very heavy now. they are expecting 1-3 inches today. but night it could fall 1-3

inches were hour. you can see traffic moving on the long island expressway towards new york city with the blizzard warning sign above them. they are expecting treacherous conditions ahead with a blizzard warning stretching 250 miles from southern new jersey to northern maine. gusting to tropical storm force with widespread coastal flooding expected. officials warning of the hazardous travel out here. andrew cuomo says he may shut down the long island expressway and suspend service on the commuter train lines. >> my message to all new yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have seen before. prepare to be safe. take every precaution.

now is the time to get ready for this extreme weather. >> reporter: we are told road conditions will be treacherous. unnecessary travel is being discouraged. but a lot of folks trying to get to work this morning. martha: new york has snow plows and sanitation workers already on the street. >> reporter: they have 5,000 sanitation workers who will be manning those snow plows. they will be on 12-hour shifts. in new york they usually put the plows on the trash trucks themselves. they also have pothole crews on the road. they will a tow truck task force that has been activated. new york city has 6,000 miles of road. that's like trying to clear a path from los angeles and back.

martha: they have a lot of of experience with this and hopefully they will be successful. bill: so part airlines have canceled 2,000 flights. the storm is not even here and 2,000 are preemptively ground. 7 major airports in the path of this storm that include hubs, philadelphia and boston. fortunately most airlines are waiving the rebooking fees. martha: more than $29 million people are under blizzard warning. those advisories strepping across 7 states. in new york city alone we have 1,500 snow plows on standby. they are sanitation trucks they put plows on the front of. 6,000 miles of road so those

then he walks out the next day and says he needs tax increases. i think he finds a way not to come to a solution. bill: why is that? >> i'm not sure. i always thought it's better to have somebody who has been a governor to become president because they learned to work with both sides than the current open nation the white house. bill: there is no optimism in your voice. does that mean nothing gets done? >> remember how we got welfare reform, we had to send it there three times. even though the president offered veto threats 102 democrats defied the president and voted for these bills. if we see that in the senate, i think then he will listen to the american public. >> the president's policies made income inequality worse. all the regulations that are

of the night east coast time. and one of my colleagues asked him, we are just getting this report of an unmanned drone landing on the white house drone in the middle of the night and he knew nothing about it and he checked his blackberry and said secret service said they found this don't middle of the night. they don't believe anyone is in danger. the president and the first lady are here. this is raising a lot of concerns. even though there was no immediate threat, secret service is doing an investigation. if a drone landed on the lawn, that makes you wonder what kind of threats are out there. bill: a slew of hopefuls for 2016. who made an impact?

scott walker got a lot of buzz. he was walking around on the stable with his microphone. he must have sensed his delivery and how he did on this speech was important for him. >> you have an event and you may perform well but you don't have the coming because someone does something unexpectedly good or bad. scott walker ... i say this as the son of a wisconsinite. they have a reputation for being too nice and too plight. the question about scott walker was, is he going to be able to show passion. martha: too nice and too plight. -- and too polite. >> last time around we had tim pawlenty who wasn't able to

project emotion. people thought this reserved solid, very effective governor of wisconsin they those's a good guy with a great record, but is he going to be able to demonstrate passion? while we had a lot of good perform answers at the iowa freedom forum. ted cruz, rick perry the guy who won the headline was walker because of this delivery. if he keeps this up he will be a major player particularly in the iowa caucasus. he spent some early years in iowa and his dad was a pastor there. martha: iowa will be a huge test. two people that everybody also talked quite a bit about were the two men who were not there mitt romney and jeb bush. here is donald trump on the two of them.

candidate. but this is the kind of thing that romney and bush are going have to endure as essentially the frontrunners in this contest. martha: do you think they were smart to sit it out or do you think it would have been a wise decision to show up and say i'm as conservative as any candidate you could be looking for? >> two thinks. chris christy did show up. the rap on him was he was too moderate a candidate. but you don't need to show up at everyone of these things. the danger is pandering. if you look like you are showing up at this thing like governor mom romney did in 2012 where he said i was a severely conservative governor of massachusetts. in iowa you have strongly

conservative people in western iowa represented by steve king, but you also have the rest of the element of the republican party, suburban conservative. it's an eclectic party. you have a lot of candidates running so you better be true to yourself. that's what iowaians value more than anything else is authenticity. that's why christy won support by going. he said here is where i stand. he explained who was and where he was coming from. there is one other person who did herself some good and that's a long-shot. carlie fiorina of hewlett-packard. she has got some good coming and buzz coming out of it. we have 54 weeks lot to go

new york city. we'll track the storm system carefully. one of the concerns i have conditions will really deteriorate as we head into this evening. if anyone is on the roads, with traffic and rush hour, that will be a huge problem across the new york city area and surrounding areas across the tristate. the current radar, the storm system hasn't intensified just yet. it is producing areas of heavy snow across parts of pennsylvania and eastern my. snow is coming down across parts of new jersey and new york city area. look at the computer model, as tonight we'll see very heavy snow developing, blizzard conditions. snowfall rates as much as two to four inches per hour. it will be very tough for crews to keep up with that amount of snowfall. we're likely also going to be experiencing thundersnow. there will be thunder and lightning in the overnight hours. 6:00 a.m. tuesday still blizzard conditions. in new york city in new jersey, all the way through parts of new england. this will be a long lived event.

i think marianne is right. that is where the conversation already moved but unbelievable and true. where is your side, katy going to compromise on taxes and economic inequality? >> i think that republicans for the past couple years have done a lost compromising when it comes to president obama's agenda. after years of the president accusing republicans in the house of being a do-nothing congress we'll move forward with the next two years which do matter. put 2016 aside for a minute. the next two years do martie and white house's decisions do matter and president will not do anything. it will be a do nothing white house. bottom line with the middle class, the middle class has been significantly deflated under barack obama's policies. the economy is not where it should be after six years of those policies. for him to say he wants to give middle class a bunch of free stuff is not really free will not solve the problem. the middle class doesn't need the government to help them. they need the government to get out of the way so they can prosper. martha: we'll talk about how he wants to help the middle class

marianne, it comes back to issue of raising taxes. moving money from people who have more of it to people who have less of it. my question to you as chris wallace brought up what percentage is fair if everybody gives fair share for wealthy what percentage? they're paying 55% in most cases, what percentage above that do you think is fair? >> well, two things martha. first and foremost i think you can close a lost loopholes which would make the tax system much more fair. go back to the tax rates under ronald reagan. republicans love ronald reagan. they love his economics. they loved everything that happened when ronald reagan was president. let's go back to those tax rates. martha: but you didn't answer my question and neither did -- >> 128.5? martha: what percentage is fair? for upper income 2.5. martha: in many cases they pay 55% when you combine state and federal taxes. if you want to give more than half your paycheck and that's fair and those people ought to give more i think there is a lot

house and landed it on the lawn and why? kevin joins us from the white house. what do we know about all of this so far kevin? >> well so far what we do know it's a quad copter. that's commonly referred to as a drone and given the size of the device here found at the white house overnight, it's likely the kind that you can buy at any hobby shop. overnight it was a very active scene here at the white house. in fact, that's continued. in fact, all morning long we've seen secret service personnel combing the grounds, making sure there are no similar devices here in the area. while we have a moment let me show you what secret service spokesman is saying about what was found here overnight. at approximately 3:08 a.m., a secret service uniformed division officer post the on the southbound side saw and heard a quad copter device flying at a very low altitude and ultimately crashing on the southeast side of the complex. now, we do have obviously very good news t. doesn't appear to

this is a discerning audience in iowa. what are folks in iowa looking for, ed? >> they want someone that basically is a crew conservative. the 1200 people that showed up at this nine or 10 hour event the most die hard possible. who would sit there and listen to all day speeches on a saturday? i wouldn't but i give them very credit. they're volunteers. but what happens at the events is they drag you to the right. you have to be more and more conservative and you can't be a moderate and you can't be a centrist and it was not a george bush crowd or a jeb bush crowd but at the end of the day, jeb bush was out raising lots of money and that's equally as important. >> when i come back to you, i want to get your take on who did well but joe, first, last hour karl rove told martha you do not want to pander when you go to iowa. what is your experience? >> that is exactly right. look. what happens is the candidate comes through iowa it's like the circus is coming to town.

and so you get a lot of people to come and it really matters once they're there that you got something to say and i think ed is right about this event. you know, this was catering more to the real conservative wing of the party. last time you saw romney win santorum did very well with conservatives. the huckabee campaign that ed ran was like fantastic for iowa. it attracted people and huckabee had something to say and he didn't pander. he was real and he was authentic and that's key in that state. >> you know ed, when you think about the current list at the moment, who is a huckabee? >> huckabee has to be looked at as a favorite son. if he doesn't win iowa his candidacy is probably over. wisconsin did extremely well and while everybody else was talking about what they would do if

they're president, he said this is what i've done in a liberal state. i've backed unions away restored economic stability to the state and he came off as doing extremely well so my sense is he probably got into the mix of viable candidates just off of this one performance. >> he won three elections in four years in a blue state. you've got a record there. joe, react to this. chris christie governor from new jersey now. >> let me ask you this. if i was too blunt, too direct too loud and too new jersey for iowa, then why do you people keep inviting me back? >> he teed it up well, joe. >> i thought chris christie did himself a lot of good at this event. and i think it's because the expectations, when you exceed expectations in iowa that matters. i think jeb bush may be able to do this too, because i think people had expectation that he's -- it's george bush again but you know i think people will find out that's not true.

>> scientists keeping their eye on a massive asteroid that's expected to fly by today. phil keating is live in miami looking up. when is the best time to view said asteroid? >> the closest this ais roadwayed will be next to the planet is in about 13 minutes by now. however, the best time to view this will be after sunset about three hours after tonight. that's according to astronomers at nasa's near earth objects program. here is a look at the trajectory of this massive asteroid. it is named 2004 bl 86. it is huge. the size of a mountain about a third of a mile wide. it is on the same orbit plane as earth is going around the sun and right now it is just about three times the distance of the earth and the moon. so that's pretty close. in fact, the closest an asteroid of this size will fly by us for the next 12 years.
