times square, snow coming down pretty hard. but guess what? this is just the beginning. by this time tomorrow on "the real story," that could be three feet out there. don't miss the "the real story" tomorrow. i'll be here. i'm gretchen. now over to shep. >> breaking news, "shepard smith reporting" live from the fox news deck. >> so it's snowing. ijg': mentioned that. repeatedly. you've heard i all day long. it's going to continue to snow but this storm is worse than your garden variety nor'easter not only for the amount of snow coming but for the wind and surf in parts of the 250-mile stretch of target area weather service is predicting up to hurricane force win gusts and that means power outages and wind chills below zero with hundreds of thousands of people without electricity. that could kill. the blizzard barreling up the east coast could be the worst that some cities have ever seen. according to the national

weather service, more than 50 million people are in the path. it's already dropped several inches of snow from delware to new york, but the main storm hasn't even arrived yet. when it does in the next few hours, forecasters say some places could see snow falling at a rate of an inch every 15 minutes. and that's going to go on for hours. we have been tracking the radar on the big wall here. going to hit from new jersey all the way up to maine really, and with all those big cities in between. the low pressure trough is going to move offshore. see the moisture out over the atlantic. when the low moves over here, all of this gets pushed back to land and that's when the bottom falls out of the clouds in new york city the mayor ordered streets closed to everybody except emergency workers starting 11:00 tonight. new york and new jersey declared states16 of emergency. schools in philly sent kids home. they're going to be closed in new york tomorrow and here they're warping the entire

transportation system may be shut done. buses, subways-commuter rails, buses, highways, freeways, all potentially out of commission. airlines have cancelled more than 2500 flights for today alone and called off thousands more tomorrow. forecasters say this storm could set all sorts of new snowfall records, but forecasters do say it's the wind i mentioned that really makes this blizzard so dangerous. like a hurricane really but with snow and with wind chills below zero. the national weather service tweeted out an -- what it means for this to

we have the city shutting down and the cold air in place. we have seen a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and all of this warm air from the south. this cold air is going to remain in place for at least a week. blizzard warnings in the red here. one to three feet of snow. but the problem here is the

blizzard conditions, 50 to 80 miles-per-hour gusts for a period of six to ten hours for these major cities. >> and by this time tomorrow afternoon, the worst is over. right? >> well, i think tomorrow is really going to be people are going to be hunkered down. i don't think anything will happen tomorrow. by tuesday night wednesday, things a little more improved. but these are the forecast wind gusts. this is 5:00 a.m. tuesday. wind gusts, '50 to 70 miles-per-hour, all along the coast. the snow is on the ground. blowing snow continues tuesday afternoon, into tuesday evening. we're still looking at the low across new england. that's eventually going to move up towards eastern canada. forgive me. this is 7:00 a.m. wednesday. so the storm is still with us. the snow is on the ground, and the blowing conditionsb continue. >> all right janice dean. next update from the national weather service coming top of the hour. new york's governor has said

officials are planning to keep all traffic except for obviously emergency vehicles off every road on long island starting at 11:00 tonight. they're expected to announce more information about nat in just about an hour. long island they're getting a worst case scenario in long island because of the storm surge and because of the heavy winds. long island sticks out just out to the east. the storm will just come rolling right across it. so from the hamptons and closer to the city, and queens, that whole area there is going to be dealing with very high winds, extremely high surf. some of the predicts are up to 30-foot waves. but 10 to 15 for certain. that takes out powerlines. that puts people in freezing conditions, way freezing conditions with no electricity potentially, and long island is a tough place to get into and out of when the weather is perfect. when the long island expressway is covered in snow, as the long islander might say, few forget

at this rate. the governor is encouraging everyone to go home and stay home. listen. >> 4:00, 5:00 6:00 tonight, you want to be home and you want to stay home. when we are talking about closing the subway, long island railroad, closing roads, we have been talking about it for two or three days. this is not an evening or a night to be out and about. >> reporter: and again shepard the governor said he may close all roads tonight through tomorrow. >> a couple million people live out there. hundreds of thousands of them take public transportation into the city every day. that's got to be a bear. >> reporter: and now they're trying to get those people out early. they have added 26 trains to the long island railroad and also to the metro north which services westchester which connecticut and beyond. later tonight they're going to shut all those trains down. by 11:00 they'll stop rubbing the trains. new jersey transit will suspend all services a of 8:00 tonight

and won't resume until thursday. so, once you get out of town, you are going to have a hard time getting back into town. >> while you were just speaking crossed out of melville new york, the governor just made it official, storm related travel ban starts at 11:00 tonight. all over long island. get there and stay there. >> and you can see why. the snow is falling so fast and will start falling faster. it's going to make travel extremely difficult and dangerous, whiteout conditions and won't be safe to be on the road. >> think of the whiteout conditions. they're supposed to begin four hours from now? and continue for at least 12 hours. 12 hours of whiteout conditions. everybody has a story here. getting people -- if you are not home in this region from philadelphia into new york and up to boston and beyond, of you're not already home from some places you're not getting there, today was my day off a day off way. down in miami spectacular and sunny and gorgeous and i was on

the beach yesterday but hi flight was canceled. so we flew in this morning at la#r guardia and -- roll that video -- this is come to go in on the plane from miami this morning. it was like 78 down there and then you land and they already had the plows out. next video. they had plows -- even at the top of the screen, that was 9:30 this morning, and la guardia already looked like that and then everything from now on at la guardia is cancelled. this is the d terminal and that's all they had slated. every single thing is cancelled. i expected when i got into la guardia for it to be packed full of people but it wasn't. these are people coming in. not much else going out and that is how it's going to be across the region. all the changes are affecting travelers everywhere-not just here in the east. this has been a ripple effect across the country and getting pretty much anywhere is going to be tough. mark has a look at the misery

ing. more than 2500 flights in the u.s. have been cancelled photo alone and more than 1300 flights are delayed. as for other travel amtrak has modified their schedule between new york and boston and they're going to continue to evaluate as conditions change. at la guardia travelers have been taking things in stride. one gentleman flew here from mexico for a two-hour meeting and he was supposed to leave

tomorrow. >> my flight was cancelled out of jfk. i was able to look for a place from here to dallas and then dallas to mexico city. so just -- i hope i don't get stuck but we'll see. >> reporter: now, he is scheduled to leave at 3:15 today but flights being cancelled here at la guardia. one notable flight did make it out today, and that was the flight that took the new england patriots out of boston logan, headed for arizona for the super bowl shep. >> what are they doing up the coast, new england and beyond, to get ready? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned, this is a huge deal. the governors of new york, connecticut, massachusetts, and new jersey, have already declared states of emergency. massachusetts, connecticut, and now new york, have also been ordering travel bans starting at early as 9:00 this evening in some places. now ohio was hit last night and this morning, sending cars

sliding off roads, some getting stuck and this is what one suburb of philadelphia looked like this morning when a local news crew took a drive. philadelphia expecting a foot of snow but other states in the northeast could get up to three feet. connecticut's governor warning people to be prepared. >> if you're without power, you are going to be without power for a period of time. all likely -- in all likelihood several days. >> reporter: now, in utilities companies have already been reaching out to customers warning about outages. in connecticut alone 100,000 expected. >> incredible. thank you. so three feet potentially in and around boston. got the update from the national weather service for new york system blizzard conditions for 12 hours, snow accumulation, 20 to 30 inches ample people think this low is going to move a little farther off the coast and we're not get: 30-inch us but if the national weather service says it, that's what they say.

just in, a great white way is dark tonight. the word came 30 seconds ago that broadway will turn all the lights off and close down all the shows a block from here in mid-town manhattan, and if they're closed today, you have to know tomorrow is worse. our producer has been getting tweets from all around the area. lots of stuff. >> we had the new york police department tweeting at 11:00 p.m. tonight streets will only be available to emergency vehicles, hash tag safe nyc. the department of education tweeted all public schools will be closed tomorrow for january 27th. new york governor andrew cuomo

river plant and we're seeing a lot of activity within this power company, which supplies power to manhattan and all throughout the region. these power companies are gearing up for the long days ahead. we know they're going to be problems here at con edison. there's no exception there. we were able to take our cameras inside what they call the command and control center today. con edison's power lines run underground near manhattan and keeps the power protected but they tell is they see problems red wings 48 hours after the snow dumps as the road salt melts off. all the runoff goes underground where the lines are. conned spokesperson says lessons have been learn from the last two major storms, hurricane irene and sandy. that has prompted con ed to perform what they call storm hardening measures. they have built walls around the substationsstationsstations and installed submersible equipment and resources from other out of

fox report now and more headlines from the fox news deck. crews tried using a rope and balloons to lift the airasia's fuselage from the sea but the rope snapped. they found 70 bodies and many more could be inside the fuselage. bad weather may have triggered the crash that killed all 162 people onboard. >> somebody claimed responsibility for the drone that crashed on the white house grounds according to the secret service. the white house went on lockdown, the president and first lady are in india and the first family is not in any danger. >> a judge told parents you cannot name your daughter nutella, the court said know because it's a trade name of a spread and can only lead to teasing. a judge reportedly picked a new

ok... it's snowing. 50 million people in the path. more than just know and that's the problem. forecasters say the storm could bring hurricane force winds for hours on end. that would bring flooding enormous waves and power outages across the enormous region up and down the coast. governors and local leaders in several states told people, get off the road go home and stay home. our meteorologist janice dean is in the extreme weather center. i'm worried about with this storm the coastal winds from all the way up there in the boston region and in maine and along long island where they are going to have power oatages and old people at home and two feet of snow, the rescue trucks can't get there. we could get lucky, but this could be awful. >> it could, and i think now is the time you have your preparation plan hopefully in place and you're questioning to come together with -- you're

going to come together with your neighbors and community to help folks without power, maybe for the next several days or week. we can hope the storm isn't as bad as we have been forecasting but at this rate, somebody is going to get a jackpot of three feet. we think it's new england. but long island certainly new york connecticut cape cod could get hurricane force winds for an extended length of time. so a lot of problems during a long duration of time here. i just want show you the current temperatures. the last several weeks we have had winter storms but it's been too warm for the snow to stick. no problems here. temperatures are going to remain cold and the wind chills. so overnight when we'll have power outages up and done the coast, the wind chills in some cases below zero, into the single digits. wore at 12 right now in new york. 12 in philadelphia. cold air is in place all snow event. satellite radar imagery showing

you the snow is playing right now in philadelphia, up towards new jersey also, long island new york city, towards boston and the storm hasn't even gotten off the coast yet. that is when we're really going to see the thing crank up and the blizzard cams into effect. these are wind gusts already. wind gusts in excess of 25 miles-per-hour, close to 30 in mon talk, 33, nantucket. we have several hours to go where we're dealing with blizzard conditions. this is the european model forecast imagery and this shows an all-snow event for philadelphia, new york, 3:00 a.m., boston portland, all of these areas millions of people affected. this is tuesday, around 12:00. still an all-snow event. philly, new york, long island, connecticut, up towards rhode island as well as massachusetts, up towards maine. this is going to be an entire

snow event and a blizzard at that for the next 12 to 24 hours with wind gusts in excess of 40 to 60, even 80 miles-per-hour. >> 80 in new england. >> let's talk about the snowfall -- >> that's what want to talk about. predictions are all over the place. this time yesterday looked like we would 2010 close to three neat in new york. now looks like somewhat south of two feet? >> i think 12 to 18 inches for the new york city area is probably what we're going to get but we're seeing a lot of snow already and some forecasters are saying an inch here two inches. we are seeing tons of snow? new york city. snow is one of the hardest things for meteorologists to predict but this is the european forecast model. in the blue, that's six to twelve. lighter shades. darker shades are 12 to 18 inches for new york and long island, and then providence and boston talking about 18 to 24. i think they could get upward

offed three feet here. now, this is the forecast -- this is consistent with the euro. the areas here, 12 to 18, and then 18 to 24 here for eastern long island, up towards connecticut and massachusetts, and again, that bull's-eye for new england. now, gfs model, what happens here? three to six. maybe six to twelve eight inches. so, we really have to pinpoint how much snow. i think right now, new york city, 12 to 18. up towards boston, two feet or more. but the problem here is the wind. the sustained winds, 30, 40 miles-per-hour, for a period of ten to 12 hours. that is going to be the dangerous part of the storm. >> janice, good to see you. i want to show you this map. it's snowing outside. but is what is hitting us now. that is what is coming.

the low pressure trough is going to come off the water ask that's going to push this moisture at us. so as it pushes towards us it just drops in bucketloads up the coast, and the variable here is how far does this low come off the coast? if the low cams farther off the coast the worst of the snow is along the shoreline but if the low stays closer to the big cities and the northeast, the amount of snow will be much more inland. so, that is today's problem. the problem for days ahead is this. we don't go above freezing for as long as the fox ten-day forecast takes us. this is monday. "snowpocalypse" tomorrow. doesn't go above freezing until friday. on friday another snowstorm, right now predicting two to four inches. friday night it's nine. saturday night it's 12. sunday night it's 15. monday night it's four and there's another snow. tuesday we go down to three. wednesday, done to 12.

breaking news now. a judge -- a jury just convicted a former cia officer of leaking classified information to a report at the "new york times" newspaper. revealing details on a u.s. operation to cripple iran's suspected nuclear program. we have a picture of the former cia officer. prosecutors say he leaked the information to get back at the agency for his perceived mistreatment. the former officer had claimed he didn't leak anything.
