vehicles. people there being advised to stay home until the danger is finally over. sometime, tuesday. >> you can't underestimate this storm. it's not a typical storm. it's going to pack a punch. we have to expect heavy accumulation in a short period of time. there is a crucial point. this is going to come in in a sudden spurt of activity. >> something else to expect power outages are a major concern at this hour. some parts of the northeast are bracing for hurricane-force winds. massachusetts governor fears it could take days to repair downed power lines leaving thousands shivering in near-0 wind chills amtrak has been detrailed with no service between new york and boston on tuesday i'm kelly wright. more on the blizzard of 2015 as

we join the kelly file under in progress. car tonight, you leave your car there and you do not leave your house. >> can you guess where he was from? we have team fox coverage tonight. rick in uniondale in long island, new york. but janice dean reporting from the fox weather center. >> the storm is just getting its act together. the low is off the coast. and you can see these bans starting to move in to eastern massachusetts. and new england is where we're going to see the jackpot of the storm. also long island. look at how dynamic the storm is. we're getting reports of thunder and lightning, thundersnow, a very rare meteorological event across eastern parts of new england. winds are already gusting 30, 40 miles per hour along the coast. and we're starting to get our blizzard conditions. 29 million people under a blizzard warning right now. all of the big cities up and down the coastline. one to three feet for all of these big cities is what we're

forecasting with wind gusts in excess of 40 to 75 miles per hour. hurricane force wind gust warnings are in effect for cape cod, the islands. looking at the forecast radar, 9:00 a.m. tuesday, still here for parts of jersey, long island, eastern coastal areas of new england. still here by tuesday afternoon into the dinner time hour. and we're still dealing with it on wednesday. so the snow is on the ground and we're still going to be dealing with blizzard conditions well into wednesday. and power outages, we could have thousands of people without power. and with the temperatures going below zero with windchills megyn, that could be extraordinarily dangerous. here's one of our snowfall total maps. again, one to three inches bullseye across portions of eastern new england with boston perhaps getting one of their highest snowfall totals ever on record. >> what's so different about this storm? the fact it's going to sit there over us for so long? >> it's a slow moving storm. and the fact is we're dealing

with blizzard conditions. there's a criteria that you deal with when it comes to a blizzard. you have to have winds in excess of 35 miles per hour for a period of at least three hours, blowing snow and visibility reduced to less than a quarter of a mile. people cannot be out on the roads, they'll not be in the air. they need to be hunkered down in some cases for days. >> and downed power lines are always such a huge cause of fatalities when you see a storm like this janice. thank you, we'll be back to you. for this 250-mile stretch of the northeast the blizzard warning means heavy, blowing snow and possible white house conditions with a number of states they are already issuing complete bans on travel. more than 7,000 flights have already been canceled for today and tomorrow leaving some passengers stranded. earlier huge crowds filling commuter train stations. look at this picture a dozens of extra trains were brought in for the new york area to get people home before the worst of this storm hits. rick leaventhal reports from

uniondale, new york. >> megyn, i've never been to the north pole, but i imagine this is what it feels like and looks like. the wind is really kicking up now. the snow isn't that heavy. it isn't that thick. but it's feignful. and it's coming in sideways. it's been snowing all day. i'm going to step out of the way and show you what it looks like here on the surface of this parking lot outside the nassau coliseum. it's a pretty dramatic shot. it would be beautiful if it wasn't so dangerous. the roads are in very very bad shape and continuously getting worse. that's why the governor of new york has ordered all traffic off of all the major roadways in 13 counties including new york city and two counties here on long island. all traffic all except emergency vehicles and snowplows so they can do their job. same in new york city. they've also shut down the subway as you mentioned. they've closed the river crossings over the hudson, george washington bridge lincoln and holland closed at 11:00.

there's a ban basically on commuter travel as well. commuter trains are shutting down tonight. and the roads are expected to be awful throughout tonight into tomorrow. also as you mentioned in the intro, some 7,000 flight cancellations. most airports in the region will be shut down for good tomorrow. >> absolutely. thank you. we will continue to bring the latest updates and road closures and cancellations and storm totals throughout this evening. we'll be back to weather in a minute. but also breaking tonlt the threat of terrorism is casting a long shadow over a presidential trip overseas. as the white house finds itself having to react on a new al qaeda threat. in the middle of what was supposed to be a visit to improve relations with india. chief white house correspondent ed henry is overseas with the president. >> reporter: good evening, megyn. this trip has been overshadowed a bit by terror threats from the roughly 1,000 snipers the indian government brought in to help protect the leaders here to the sudden resurgence all around the world of al qaeda. in fact, tonight there's so much chaos in yemen that the u.s.

embassy has declared it's closing some operations there as the president at a news conference here in india downplayed the fact that the u.s.-backed government fell. he says u.s. drone strikes continue even though it's not clear who's in charge in yemen to coordinate those strikes. meanwhile, the president's chief of staff said the administration is at war with al qaeda despite the fact the president had been claiming the terror group was on the run. and at last year's state of the union said wars were coming to an end. >> we say we're in a war against al qaeda. we just never said we've been in a war against terrorism, which is a tactic. it's an unusual thing to say we're in war against a tactic. we are however at war against al qaeda. >> america must move off a permanent war frame. >> reporter: today here in india top white house aides said the president last year was referring to the bush administration's war footing of having about 180,000 u.s. ground troops in iraq and afghanistan. though if the u.s. is now at war with al qaeda it's unclear why

the president did not mention al qaeda at all at this year's state of the union. megyn. >> ed henry. back in washington another controversy, this one concerning the doj's decision to release a dangerous al qaeda operative from a u.s. jail. the terrorist was arrested after 9/11 here to kill americans. and he was just released for good conduct in prison. and the question tonight, was there a behind-the-scenes deal here which this administration claims it does not do when it comes to terrorists. trace gallagher reports live in our west coast newsroom. trace. >> megyn the al qaeda operative admitted he struck a deal with 9/11 architect ka lid sheik mohamed. when he arrived back in qatar he received a hero's welcome. the state department and justice department say his release was

routine. gop congressman hunter on the armed services committee believes there's evidence of quid pro quo and attorney general irrelevant helped orchestrate a swap in exchange for americans matthew and grace wang held in qatar for the unexplained death of their daughter. the wangs were released last month. omari last week. he's sent a letter to president obama asking who specifically approved the release. the state department has not denied that a deal was floated by qatar only that the u.s. didn't bite. the spokesman for several u.n. ambassadors and now a fox news contributor, says the danger here is the u.s. is now perceived as willing to negotiate. listen. >> the accusation is that the qatar and others are seeing this slippery slope, and they're asking for prisoner swaps. they say the united states and specifically the state department as willing to talk

nerve pain. breaking tonight, a travel nightmare. more than 7,000 flights already canceled, another 2,000 delayed. seven states declaring emergencies with governors warning drivers to stay off the roads. the worst of the storm expected to hit just hours from now. the winds are already picking up in new york. we'll have a live report from the street in moments. developing tonight speaker john boehner is defending his decision to invite prime minister benjamin netanyahu to speak to congress. israeli media reported friday that this administration is furious it was not consulted on the invitation. the story in the newspaper quoted one senior white house official as saying mr. netanyahu "spat in our face publicly and that's no way to behave" adding that "there will be a price."

at the same time "the washington post" quotes a source close to john kerry saying the secretary is also angry at mr. netanyahu arguing secretary kerry had gone to bat for israel at the u.n. lately and playing politics with that relationship could blunt secretary kerry's enthusiasm for being israel's prime mare defender. earlier i spoke with state department spokesperson jen psaki. jen, thank you so much for being here. >> hi, megyn. great to be here. >> that quote from "the washington post," did they get it right? is that how secretary kerry feels? >> well, secretary kerry spoke to this a bit last week. there's no question that he goes over and above the call of duty as it relates to our relationship with israel. he's made dozens of calls if not more on their behalf in the past couple of weeks. and certainly i think he felt as we all did the way this process went down bordered on the bizarre. >> i had charles krauthammer on the program friday and he called that response petulent speaking

for how israel iran truly poses an existential threat and of course benjamin netanyahu is going to want to make the case to anybody he can in america but in particular to people's representatives. can you understand that point of view? >> you're right, megyn. and the fact is prime minister netanyahu has come and spoken to congress many, many times. we welcome that. but this was -- the process was a little odd. >> let's talk about this. reports today about this al qaeda terrorist who was released from federal prison in the united states, almari is his name he was sent over here by kalid kalid kalid sheik mohamed, he was captured. the obama administration decided to treat him as a criminal as opposed to as a terrorist. at gitmo he went through the federal courts here. and was sentenced to prison. he just got released early for

time served and good behavior. which is a story unto itself. but the reports today were that there may have been a prisoner swap proposed by qatar which he has ties to saying, you know what, we'll let go of these americans, the wangs, this couple that had been convicted over there for the death of their daughter. people here said it was a show trial. they said we'll let them go if you send almari back to us. and this guy's a bad terrorist. everybody said why would we ever be negotiating for the release of a terrorist in a prisoner swap. can you confirm that that offer was made by qatar? >> well, there was no proposal on the table. and that's not something we would consider. and i think it's also important for people to know the wangs which we felt very strongly as you mention as many people did that this was a case where they should not have been held they were released and the judge said because there was a lack of forensic evidence. and they were released weeks

ago. >> the very -- timing for good behavior. >> you're right. that's true. but this was not a case where there was a prisoner swap considered discussed as a part at any of these deals. >> i'm trying to understand your language. when you say there was no proposal on the table, are you ruling out that this was ever suggested by qatar or any of its representatives to the united states or any of its representatives? >> well just to be as diplomatic as i can here, meg ib, and i appreciate you giving me the opportunity i'm not in a position to confirm anything that's mentioned at any point in time. >> let's move onto another topic. i want to ask you about yemen which basically is a hot mess now. we played a sound bite of you on friday and we confessed charles krauthammer we mentioned earlier, he laugh at what you said and here's why. the folks used to be a u.s.-backed government, we were at least satisfied with them, but these are the guys in

control now. death to america. death to israel. victory to islam. so the american people may not be feeling too great about the new people in charge of yemen. you were asked about these folks last week. here's what you said. >> they do on occasion chant death to america and that kind of thing. it's not as if they haven't expressed anti-american sentiment in the past. >> obviously not. as i mention we continue to assess our security needs every day regardless of what's been said. but it is important to note that just this week they stated that was not their intentions. >> so i mean, you know the follow-up. you're taking them at their word that they no longer mean the chants? >> well megyn, first of all i know you could never play all the back and forth we have on yemen in the briefing but we've been discussing this probably hours last week in the briefing. >> i don't want to get deep into any politics. i want to ask you whether you are actually saying we should just trust this group they now say

never mind all that chanting about death to america. >> well, i think our actions make clear that we don't just trust. i think it was important to note that that was something that was stated publicly. >> death to america. >> -- there's been a great deal of unacceptable violence rhetoric, everything you've said. there's no question about that. but we're in a situation that is very tense, it's fluid. we have to see what's going to happen on the ground in yemen. we don't know yet what's going to happen there. >> let's hope that was just bluster. let me ask you one thing before you go. your boss john kerry took some flak for going over to france after we didn't show up at the big march and bringing james taylor and have him sing you got a friend and he hugged president hollande and all the reports were this is an embarrassment, united states clearly doesn't understand french culture, a, they don't hug, b, to sing the

thank you for having me here tonight. i do want to clarify one thing. my organization is an arab organization. we're not a muslim organization. we're secular. in fact myself i am an arab christian. >> you call yourself an arab civil rights organization. >> yes we do. >> okay. >> i just want to clarify that. >> sure. >> the exact numbers i don't have on hand, but we have9kb)h @r(t&háhp &hc% noticed a tripling of the ones we usually get. there's been a significant uptick in a lot of these sort of hate-type mail. some of that happens to be, you know continuing threats of violence. other happen to be your usual hate rhetoric that we usually get from -- >> but when you say it's tripled, just give us a feel. do you normally get three a month and you you have nine or -- >> oh no it's much more than that. we usually probably get i would say about 15 to 20 a month. and we're probably getting three, four times that right now. also, this is what we ourselves have noticed.

we've asked other people who have noticed these on the internet to please forward them to us. >> okay, but what specifically does the movie do in your view to negatively portray muslims and arabs? >> let me clarify one thing. i personally myself have not seen the movie. >> how can you write that in your letter then? >> no, no because what we're getting is death threats from these people. and these threats are very specific. what they say, just saw the movie "american sniper" now i want to kill some rag heads. >> but that doesn't mean the movie has done anything wrong for which the actor or director need to come out and speak. >> when people are specifically specifying that they're seeing the movie and because they saw the movie they want to kill somebody that's problematic. >> but you know there are lunatics out there -- >> excuse me? >> there are lunatics out there. >> you're absolutely right. >> see sean hannity's tie and want to commit violence. not every lunatic and their

rhetoric can be controlled. >> you're absolutely right. you're absolutely right. and we hope that 99.9% we hope all of these are just a bunch of people with keyboard courage sitting behind a keyboard typing away. but it only takes one person. one person to go into an arab church or a mosque to start shooting. that's what we want to prevent. all we are saying and all we are asking mr. cooper and mr. eastwood is for them to come out and say this is wrong. >> when does that happen? i mean what has also happened recently and i realize some of qç specifically cite "american sniper," but we've also seen radical islamists go murder a dozen people over the "charlie hebdo" caracatures in france. has nothing to do with "american sniper". >> we did see a violent uptick in france following that

incident. we're saying we don't want that to happen in this country. we're trying to be more proactive. all we're asking them to say is look, that's not what we're about, that's not what this country's about. this is wrong. you shouldn't be threatening violence against somebody just because they happen to be a certain ethnicity or race. mind you we just got a statement from the studio, warner brothers condemned these statements. >> they condemn any people or violent threats against anybody. but bradley cooper -- do you agree that bradley cooper and clint eastwood have done nothing wrong? >> i'm not -- we're not trying to say that they've done anything wrong. >> do you agree that the film "american sniper" has done nothing wrong? >> well, we don't know that. >> right. so you're not addlleging that it has. >> no. what we're saying is we're getting e-mails making that connection. and we're asking the two the actor and director to say, hey, this is wrong. >> going to be an uphill battle.

this is a fox news weather alert i'm kelly wright in new york. that giant winter storm threatening the northeast continues a slow trek toward new england at this hour. tens of millions of people along the philadelphia to boston corridor could be impacted before this blizzard drifts out to sea. boston may be caught in its grip until tuesday afternoon but hurricane force winds are a major concern along coastal communities where flooding is a threat. at this hour, five states are under a state of emergency emergency. city and state leaders from

delaware to maine are leaving nothing to chance . >> i called up 500 national guard troops last night. they're prestaging across our common wealth to assist with fallen tree limbs, stranded drivers, shelter services and in cases door knocking. i'm hoping they won't be dealing with a lot of stranded drivers because everybody is going to be off the roads. >> here is mg else. if folks on the west coast think they're not affected better think again. the blizzard led to the cancellation of 8000 flights that disruption will be felt at airports from coast to coast on tuesday. and airline officials fear it could be days before their plane schedules are back to normal. we'll be following with all of the updates throughout the night. we now return to "the kelly file". for this big blizzard megyn. >> todd thank you, sir.

and you have an establishment battling and you have conservative conservatives battlingbebeining second choice wouldn't be a bad place to be. >> the knock on him is he's boring but then read reports of how he did in iowa this weekend and it was not so boring. >> well those should be his voters, right? he's from wisconsin, nearby. he is a lunch pale kind of conservative. he's a guy talking about blue collar get down to work roll up your shirt sleeves kind of stuff. that should appeal to iowa and republicans across the country trying to get away from the 47% kind of stuff. walker definitely impressed. and he showed he had the ability to appeal to broad spectrum con zefbtives. >> how about the trump sentiment, it can't be romney. romney tried and failed. did he speak for a lot of the party's core conservatives there? >> i will not try to reckon out for whom donald trump speaks, but i will say this -- >> just because you don't like

donald trump, but a lot of people do. his sentiment is felt by a lot of core conservatives. >> the core conservatives are being reminded what they did not like about mitt romney originally. and what they didn't like is he was a moderate. he worked very hardíg to demonstrate to republicans that he was one of theirs and would stick with them. and he stuck there for a long time. as he comes back though they're being reminded what they didn't like about him the first time. >> but he's still polling number one, 59% of the people polled say they would like to see him as a choice. >> okay with them if he runs. however, mitt romney is being remembered as the guy who they'd rather have as president than barack obama. now romney has to not be better than barack obama, he has to be better than 15 or 20 -- >> stirewalt had a great line in his morning piece 59% people may want sea bass on the menu,
