snow on the ground here. atlantic city schools have been closed. we know that several trucks are out there on the roads. the city was absolutely prepared, but we did see that the national weather service told us that the storm took a different direction. the heavy stuff that is headed to new england is 90 miles off shore. back to you. >> thank you jennifer. heading out for your morning commute, if you can. well listen up the government is spying on millions of drivers. big brother using high tech cameras to monitor movements through license plates and then taking pictures that are clear enough to identify the passengers. the justice department says this database is to stop drug trafficking near the mexico border, but it could be expanded throughout the entire country in the future. the government defends the program saying access to this data is limited and it's wiped out every 90 days. a former cia officer is found guilty on nine counts of

ease espyionage espionage. jeffrey sterling leaked information to journalist james risen. "the new york times" reporter used details in a book but never revealed his source. prosecutors say that sterling leaked the information because he was mad about being fired from the agency but all of the evidence presented at trial, circumstantial at best. sterling will be sentenced in april and faces years in prison. it is now 19 minutes after the top of the hour. still ahead, we continue our live coverage following the extreme weather. millions of you are waking up to your yards covered. we're on the ground with the latest. would not consider myself to be an angry person. you certainly have a right to make stupid blanket statements but how is that helpful, sir. chris kyle's story deserved to be told and with all due respect, what the hell are you talking about? he said it shows the effect war can have on our soldiers. speaking of war. brand new details about the terror attacks in benghazi that left four americans dead. according to new documents, just hours after the attack state department officials called it a, quote violent demonstration despite the fact they knew that it was a coordinated military style assault. the documents also show officials watched video of the entire attack in real time. the documents say embassy officials around the world were in danger because they were not alerted about the terror attack. four americans including a u.s. ambassador were killed during that assault. for the fifth time in three days the fbi is investigating

there's a website called expert flyer.com. it's a fee-based website to get into it. it's the best five bucks i've ever spent. you log in and it shows you which airline flights are not only operating but how many seats are for sale on each one. let's say you and i are flying somewhere out of jfqk in new york. you can see which ones might be flying as soon as they're open. >> with every airline. you can fill in the holes. it's brilliant. then this right here is called flight board. flight board, this -- i wanted to show you the live version of it if i can. this is an app for an ipad. you can bring up any airport you want and what you're looking at is airport-to-airport, that right there is jfk. on here is the current real live

good morning. welcome to ""fox & friends" first." we want to get to the extreme weather alert for you. we have team coverage for you as well as anna coyman is at laguardia laguardia. david lee miller is in boston. >> what's notable now is that this is 4:30 in the morning local time. that is significant because that is high tide. at this hour there could be some very moderate flatting throughout the state of massachusetts. we are told there could also be some significant beach erosion and there could be mandatory evacuations. the national guard, 500 have been put on stand by. one of their top priorities could very well be working with these flooding areas. as for downtown boston you can see this main thoroughfare has

been plowed for the last several hours. just the last few moments we saw half a dozen plow trucks come by. some people trying to enjoy the storm, i've noticed this a moment ago heather. take a look at this. here you can see a couple of local residents out early. i have to ask you very quickly, you've got a snowboard here. what are you thinking? >> we just wanted to go out and enjoy the blizzard while we can. we're from california so we don't see too much of this so we figured we'd experience it while we could. >> good luck with that heather. it is 15 degrees here and the storm nowhere near over. they expect accumulations could reach as much as three feet of snow. back to you. >> yeah. those folks could be out there for a while. 15 degrees and 4:30 in the morning. those are some diehards. thank you, david lee. a rare sight in new york city, the streets are empty. people are told to stay off the streets but at this hour the

snowfall predictions in the big apple as you take a look at times square, they're being downgraded. brian is in downtown manhattan. what do the conditions look like? >> it's a lot less serious than in boston with david lee miller. right now we have a few flurries. you have sixth avenue behind me radio city music hall. really, there are no other cars that you see other than plows and emergency vehicles. that's because there is a travel ban throughout the entire city put into effect at 11:00 p.m. for the first time in the city's history the subway system, shut down until further notice due to a blizzard. that's never been done due to a blizzard. they're obviously taking the precautions. right now what we've been seeing is nothing but plows and people shoveling and snow flurries coming down. we are not seeing those blizzard-like conditions. long island is doing worse than we are. they only have 80 people without power as of right now.

heather. >> brian yoenis live for us on fifth avenue. we haven't seen the worse of this storm. the major concern now, all of the wind which could reach over 50 miles per hour. maria is tracking it all for us. maria, when exactly when the storm pick up again? >> held rowlo, everyone. we expect the snow will continue throughout the day. we have lower snowfall forecasts for the city itself. a couple of miles eastward you're looking at very significant, heavy snow coming down across long island. blizzard conditions. more than a foot across long island. that's the story across connecticut, heavy snow coming down across southeastern parts of new england. that's going to continue throughout the day today and also into early wednesday for some of you out across parts of new england. boston could be looking at several feet of snow and that goes as well for portions of eastern massachusetts. taking a look at the current

radar, you can see the heavy snow stretching from long island areas west of the boston area. wind gusts could be hurricane force along coastal areas especially along the cape. widespread looking at gusts up to 50 miles an hour across the region. very windy. cold wind chill temperatures. teens, single digits for some of you and below zero. this storm system should continue as we head into wednesday. let's head back inside. >> incredibly dangerous. thank you, maria. the storm causing a travel nightmare. 7500 flights canceled across the country, and that is going to have a big effect on travelers for the entire week. anna is live at new york's laguardia airport. passengers spending the night there? >> reporter: yeah we saw probably a couple dozen passengers that had to do that very thing couldn't get to a hotel, didn't have friends to call. what a tough situation for them to be in. yeah, we are here at laguardia man, normally there are new

yorkers hustling and bustling through here. right now it's so quiet you could practically hear a pin drop. 7700 flights have been canceled in and out of the northeast. it's the same story at jfk and newark. hundreds of cancellations. take a look at this big board and departures, canceled, canceled, canceled. i spoke to an employee at the airport. his shift doesn't start for a couple of hours but he had to drive in at 10:30 last night to make sure he got off the roadways by that 11:00 p.m. ban. he expects the travel headaches to continue for days. listen. >> hectic. that's already really hectic day because you have business travelers that come and go on thursday or friday. it will be longer shifts, i'm guessing. >> so again heather, 7700 flights canceled in and out of the northeast but those ripple effects will be felt all across the country. back to you. >> all right.

were found nearby. police are awaiting the results of an autopsy before actually identifying them. >> it's not the outcome we had hoped for but obviously it's the one we have to deal with. >> the runyons were first reported missing by their three daughters friday when they did not show up to baby-sit their grandchildren. family members say the couple was planning on driving to the small town of mcray in southeastern virginia to look at a 1966 ford mustang they were interested in buying. the vintage car was posted in an ad on craig's list. their daughter said their dad always took extra precaution when meet being someone for the first time. >> he had certain security measures and protocols he would follow. >> we're not sure what happened here. 28-year-old ronnie jay towns is the man who posted that ad. his family convinced him to turn

and back to our extreme weather alert. the northeast waking up to a brutal blast of winter. have to clear the camera lens there. this is the scene in boston right now. now to philadelphia. not your average winter storm. this snow particularly dangerous. maria molina joins us to explain exactly why. >> reporter: hi. good morning, heather. we've been talking about the storm impacts with the storm moving up the east coast in terms of how much snow, how much wind but the snow itself is also particularly dangerous.

we have very cold temperatures out across the temperatures. temperatures here in new york city in the low 20s. so when the snow come down it is a very light fluffy type. what that means for drivers is that you're going to be looking at extra slick conditions out there if you do try to hit the roads. of course in new york city no one will be doing that. we do have a travel ban in effect and surrounding areas across new england likely will be looking at road closures from the storm system because of just how dangerous conditions will be. and over the next several days even once the storm is over something else to watch will be the concern for black ice as some of this stuff refreezes on the roads that got cleared. be careful out there over the next several days. let's head back inside. >> thank you maria. the super bowl is looking a little like the u.s./mexico border. customs and border protection lending a hand for the super bowl for security. blackhawk helicopters and truck sized x-ray machines are brought in to the glendale, arizona stadium to detect contraband and explosives explosives.
