>> tens of millions of americans in a blizzard. hurricane force winds, thousands of flights canceled and new worries this morning about power outages and flooding. good morning and welcome to "fox & friends first". i am ainsley earhardt. >> i am heather childers. we want to get right to the extreme weather alert for you. >> we have live team coverage in boston one of the hardest hit cities. david? >> indeed a very hard hit city. i am in boston. i am now standing in the middle of boylston street. take a look behind me to get a sense of what's happening here or what is not happening here. very few people out on the

street. visibility very very poor. the travel ban is in effect. the only vehicles allowed on the street other than heavy equipment are emergency vehicles, those affiliated with medical services and the media. here you see one of the many plows that has made its way down the street. we have noticed more than a dozen plows in the last hour. as you take a look very quickly you can see that the blacktop is still not visible. they are plowing every few minutes, the snow continues to fall 3-4 inches an hour. what remains to be seen is this storm going to be a record breaker? is it could be close. back to you. >> you and the crew be careful out there david lee, thank you. >> public transit suspended but initial predictions of up to 3 feet in snow in new york city is now being downgraded. brian is live for us in mid town manhattan with a look at how the

streets are at this hour. >> the flurries are coming down p. the initially it was thought to be one of the top five storms in new york history. the record was in 2006. right now it won't be that. predictions have dom counsel to 10 to 20 inches. a travel ban put in place for 11:00 for the first time in the city's history the entire subway system shut down due to a blizzard. no cabs allowed, nothing. >> i have been in hurricanes. i am from chicago. new york don't have nothing on me. i am used to snow up to here. >> millions are expected to stay in shelters.

cars on the street who are not official vehicles could be looking at a ticket. parts of suffolk county are hit the hardest. the worst of the storm is yet to come. >> 14.7 inches reported in new york. that's on long island. that area reported that at about 3:00 a.m. this morning the snow has continued to come down out there. we are talking about several inches an hour currently across long island eastern conditionnecticut and eastern parts of massachusetts. we have blizzard conditions white out occurring across parts of long island connecticut and massachusetts also in rhode island a very tough go early this morning out there. you are looking at a powerful storm system that will be producing heated snow across those areas. brian mentioned new york city

missing the brunt of the storm system. the storm took the trek further off to the east. that's what prevented those snow totals of several feet for the city. we are looking at significant snow possible and strong gusty winds over the entire region gusty winds 50 miles an hour. cold temperatures across the region. teens in new york and below zero in boston. as far as the forecast goes we will see the snow coming down across the region through out the day today and into tomorrow for new england. >> regardless, dangerous conditions. thank you, maria. the storm is causing a travel nightmare. tens of thousands of air mineline passengers stranded 8000 flights are canceled across the country. we are live at newark liguardia airport. anna it is really deserted. >> absolutely despite a few people who are using their willows and suitcases -- using

their duffle bags and suitcases for pillows and their jackets for blankets like you see behind me. there's about 7,700 flights delayed and canceled in and out of the northeast. it's the same story at laguardia as it is at two other airports in new york city and jfk and newark. hundreds of delays and cancellations put into place there. i want to look at this big board that is lit up for the arrivals and departures. some say they have never seen it like this before. take a listen. >> i have been thinking their flight is going to be on time. they are all canceled right now. i have never been here when it was completely canceled. departures arrivals everything. >> that particular employee's shift doesn't even start for another couple of hours but he had to come in last night at 10:30 before the ban went into place at 11:00 p.m. he had to make sure he was off

pond where the couple's vehicle was found earlier. they have notified relatives of bud and june runion. they responded to a craig's list advertisement about a vintage car. >> their bodies were not submerged in water only the automobile was in the water. >> the run ons were first reported missing by their three daughters friday. when they didn't show up to see their grandchildren obviously they were concerned about what happened. they were going to look at a 1966 ford mustang they were interested in buying. their daughters say their dad was always extra careful when meeting someone for the first time. >> he was very wise. >> the man claiming to own the

car they were interested in has turned himself into police. 20-year-old ronny j. towns was arrested on charges of giving false statement and criminal intent to commit theft by deception. towns was the last person to speak with the couple. additional charges against towns are pending following the outcome of an autopsy on the two bodies that were found. >> heartbreaking news. thank you. kelly. >> the state department denying reports and admitted terrorists were part of a proposed prisoner swap with qatar. the controversial release of an al qaeda agent comes weeks after two americans were set free by the qatari. the state department says that's not because of any agreements. >> there was no proposal on the table. that's not something we would consider. this is not a case where there was a prisoner swap considered

or discussed as part of the deal. >> richard pernell argues the prisoner swap idea was definitely floated no matter what the state department says. >> they saved an 8 month old baby girl from a cruise ship. that little girl was having seizures and having trouble breathing. they lowered down the basket they air lifted the baby the mother and a nurse. they were taken to the houston area hospital and the child is in unknown condition right now. >> an incredible video of a dramatic rescue. the pilot on the way to maui when the plane runs out of fuel 5,000 feet over the ocean. he deploys a parachute here he is opening the door ready to jump out. 90 seconds later the plane plummets into the water and flips over. he escapes from a life raft while he was waiting for a ride near a nearby cruise ship. you can see the crew pulling him

>> wicked winter weather slamming parts of the shore. strong winds churning up the waves in atlantic city. snow is expected to fall steadily until noon. we have the latest on conditions. the snow is once again falling there. >> that's right. good morning, heather. it is. i was saying the consistency of this snow has been changing as the morning goes on. earlier it was more of a rain, sleet, wintery mix. it is sort of a whiter fluffier snow. as you can see it is sticking to the ground. we are live along the heart of atlantic city. i have the outlets behind me and caesar hotel behind me. other than that it is pretty quiet in town. we are seeing the plow trucks rolling through this area trying

to keep the area safe as the storm continues on. we know at least a few more inches of snow expected to hit town. we have been hearing luckily we have been spared. while atlantic city schools are closed for the day the mayor of new york city was clear he did not want to shut the casinos down last night. thankfully that's not going to happen. atlantic city has had a rough several months economically. the conventions that have been scheduled and are taking place in town will still goes on. that's good news this morning, ainsley. >> that is good news. thank you, jennifer. >> something went wrong. two social peed yawmedia sites apologizing after a massive outage. adam shapiro is here with that. >> the giant media site facebook suffered an outage worldwide last night it knocked out the desk top and mobile versions.

it also hit instagram. it took an hour but thousands of people went to twitter to complain. facebook which also owns instagram has not said yet exactly what caused the outage. >> 1980 song "somebody's watching me." if you have a verizon phone it is true. the worst fears of cyber security folks that verizon allows what they call super cookies on your device so advertisers can track cell phone users. churn has agreed to stop tracking verizon customers. big blue is feeling blue as ibm has pending layoffs. the employees are rumored to be on the chopping block. that number is ridiculous. cuts are on the way as the company schrifts from hardware deck to cloud producing security and big data. investors are looking toward

760 clouds and full cleanup mode to combat the juneau blizzard. how can you weather around the winter storm with your smart phone. >> look at that. that's pretty cool video right there. >> sniper guy is here with helpful apps and one that can even shovel snow for you. how is that possible? >> good morning to you. we are talking about an app launched about a year ago and is now getting traction because this is called plows and mows. during the winter they plow snow on demand. you log on to the app download it and it is sort of like that service called you beer which -- uber which in many cities you can get a car service on demand like a taxi or black car. this you press the button they come to your house and eventually do your driveway whatever else you have asked for and they take a picture and send it to you when it is done you pay for the credit card on the app. you never even have to be there. we have seen, we have gone

around and looked at a lot of these snowplow tractor apps. boston has a robust one. this one right here from pittsburgh is really a great winner. this will show you exactly where all of the plows are at any given time, so the blue dots will show you that there are multiple plows in that one particular location. when you zoom in you can see if they are on your street or near your street. the city of boston has a great request form where you can log on and find out if you haven't done my street, please go and do it right now. >> this area 11, this area 12 is that what that means? >> yes. >> also people individually can let you know where the street conditions or weather conditions are in your area. >> so weather mob is another app that is getting traction. you can become a weather caster. you go in your own neighborhood and start posting what your weather is like.

cities. >> we have a roadblocked in one of the cities in the region. they are nowing the streets. every few minutes one of these plows comes down the street and nevertheless we still cannot see the blacktop on the roads. the snow continuing on a furious pace. a pace of about 3-4 inches an hour we are told. one thing worth noting. let me show you the snow. let me bend down here and give you an idea of what we are dealing with here. it is 15 degrees in boston. this is a pretty dry snow, as a consequence of that this is a good thing it is not clinging as much to things like power lines. that could diminish the problem with power going out. nevertheless there are still more than 6,000 people in the state of massachusetts that do not have electricity. no word on how long it will take for those repairs to become effective. back to you. david lee be careful.

thank you. a live look in times square. the crossroads of the world pretty empty there. new york city is ottn lock down. travel suspended but predictions are falling short. brian yenis has more. >> what do the streets look like now. >> we were expecting a top five type of storm. it is just about maybe 10 inches to 20 inches of snow expected. right now it is a ghost town. if you have people shoveling the snow you have the blacktop unlike in boston. you have plows coming in and out of here. it is just flurries nothing that resembles a blizzard. there is a transportation ban. that's the first time public transportation at subways has stopped due to a blizzard. no cabs no broad kay shows. this city is on complete lock down. if you are on the road caught in a car that is not an emergency

vehicle you can get a violation or ticket close to $300. we are really expecting this to continue to go on. it is flurries out here. we will keep an eye on it if conditions worsen. >> it is not just the snow we have to worry about. many cities under the coast under flood watches and warnings. the worst flooding expected in cape cod. maria, how much could they see? >> we are looking at several feet of additional water. that's on top of normal tied levels. there are some areas that are looking at high tied in the next couple of hours. we have to watch closely for the potential for coastal flooding out there. coastal flood warnings have been issued widespread along coastal areas new england down into parts of new jersey have been issued for several areas out there. looking at the future radar you see the storm system continues to impact areas across new

estimates of obamacare for the next t according to the report the government will spend nearly $2 trillion over a decade and take in about $644 billion in taxes penalties and fees related to obamacare. bottom line the $1.35 trillion net cost will provide health insurance for up to 27 million americans. that means the price tag comes in at 50,000 dollars per person at best. still leaves between 29 and 31 million nonelderly americans without medical insurance. the numbers used assume obamacare exchange enrollment will double between now and 2025. back in 2009 president barack obama said his health plan with cost 900 billion that would work out to 30,000 dollars per person in other words significantly less than the cbo report will says the actual costs will be. shocking to say the least.
