jon: see you back here in one hour. jenna: "outnumbered" starts now. >> this is a fox news alert. big political news today. mitt romney announcing he will not run for the 2016 republican nomination. this is "outnumbered," i'm andrea tan terrace. here is today, harris faulkner, melissa francis, actress stacey dash and today's #oneluckyguy, actor, producer author and, of course hercules -- [laughter] hollywood's kevin sorbo. he's "outnumbered." >> good to be back, thanks. >> and a big news day. >> it is. >> lots of politics. >> usually. >> and we can't wait to get your thoughts. and since you're hercules you don't care what anyone in

[laughter] >> you care a little bit. >> oh, just a little bit. >> not really. >> stacey's like, i could care less. i love it girl. all right. romney had a hefty lead in the latest polls and he admits he could win in his third run at the white house, but he says it's time to give other leaders in the party to become the next nominee. carl cameron is live in washington. carl? >> hi, andrea. it took only three weeks for mitt romney to, in his words, seriously consider a third presidential run and then say he's not going to do it. he did say the fundraising calls indicated he could have earned the money. the latest poll showed him ahead against the field double digits, but last weekend he began to see and hear about a lack of enthusiasm from the grassroots conservative base particularly. romney has said to the base, to republicans that he would really like to lead them and just they

already signing up with other campaigns or just not coming back. his 2008 and 2012 iowa guruday kochel -- dave kochel signed up with jeb bush's pac the other day, and it wasn't what pushed romney out, although a lot of people are going to make a one to one correlation. a lot of insiders say he realized with a conservative base there was more animosity than enthusiasm. >> carl, i think that was very honest of romney to admit that there was a lack of enthusiasm. that was pretty candid of him to say, look people just aren't that excited about me. but i'm not really buying that jeb bush isn't really a factor or that the fact that jeb bush is raising so much money and that these key romney aides are defecting to jeb bush. i'm not really buying that wasn't a big reason that he decided not to run. >> yeah. there's been a couple of small instances like this one with mr. kochel going to the bush pac that have been highlighted by the media but there's a real

scramble underway in the early voting states for staffers. there's so many republican candidates, and a finite number of real seasoned pros who can do this sort of stuff. so jeb bush was getting a lot of old mitt romney donors and supporters and volunteers and staffers, people sending him resumés. the romney campaign such as it was, or might have been recognized all that. i watched mitt romney's speech to the republican national committee when they were meeting out in san diego. they were cordial and polite and even some encouragement, but the whispers in the hallways were almost unanimous, people thought it was a little bit crazy. there was an indiana big summit of -- iowa big summit last weekend in des moines, and some of his potential rivals pretty much dissed him, although they didn't call him out by name from the podium, and throughout the entire weekend conservatives in iowa weren't showing any interest for him. and so this all got back to mitt romney. some of his top advisers really wanted him to go for it, and ann is and his family did too but he has always prided himself and

rest of them without him but had he gotten in payoff his record and because -- because of his records and because republicans have always been suspicious of him as a former massachusetts governor who changed his position on social positions, it wasn't going to be pretty. they figured that out. he didn't win the nomination in '08. in 2012 he did but the field then is nothing like it is in '16. it's much more combative, a much more full campaign of candidates with bigger resumés, more experience louder voices and mitt romney wasn't powering over the 2016 campaign field the way he was perceived to in 2012. in. >> carl it's fascinating you couldn't even fit all of the names of the republican male, white candidates on that one full screen that you showed. even though we don't have mitt romney in the race there's still plenty of 2016 talk that -- >> it makes the old brady bunch tv show too small. you have got to have 25 people on screen.
