big news in the 2016 race for the white house 2012 republican nominee mitt romney saying a new face in the gop will probably have a better chance at defeating the democrats. he announced he will not be running for the presidency. we're in washington with the very latest. not really expected today karl. >> from the time romney said he was going to take a serious look at running for a third time for the presidency, it took him three weeks to decide he wasn't going to do it and he told supporters to the in a conference call. >> it's critical that america elect a conservative leader to become our next president. you know that i have wanted to be that president, but i do not want to make it more difficult for someone else to emerge who may have a better chance at becoming that president. >> romney indicated fund raising wouldn't have been a problem but a lot of former dorners going with other candidates gave him sort of a different message. he got lots of encouraging phone calls to his new house in salt lake city, but dit didn't carry

over. remaining contenders began swiping at romney issued statements of farewell. jeb bush posted on facebook and twitter, "mitt is a patriot and i join many in hoping his days of serving our nation and our party are not over." romney met with bush last week in utah. he meets with chris christie tonight for dinner. he told supporters it's time for somebody new. listen to this. >> i believe that one of our next generation of republican leaders, one who may not be as well known as i am today one who is not yet taken their message across the country, one who is just getting started, may well emerge as being better able to defeat the democrat nominee. >> to a lot of folks that amounted to a shot at former florida governor jeb bush who was governor more than a decade ago. the iowa caucuses are scheduled tentatively for one year and nine days from now. romney will not be in it but

there are somewhere in the neighborhood of two dozen potential candidates who are thinking about it and working toward it. romney could end up in iowa or new hampshire next year at caucus and primary time. but if he does, it will be to endorse somebody else, sean. >> carl, it's interesting those remarks interpreted that may not be as well known as i am the next generation to be a shot against jeb. i didn't hear it that way. it doesn't really need to be. it could be a potential endorsement of marco rubio. it could be a nod to scott walker who romney called this afternoon. but the reason there is a lot of speculation that there's some animosity toward jeb bush and some extent towards chris christie is during this three-week period where romney was discussing it romney aides pointed out time and time again that jeb bush was slow to endorse mitt romney in the 2012 race and that chris christie was vetted by the romney campaign as a possible vice presidential nominee and passed over and suggested maybe christie has a lot of baggage. there are new faces.

rand paul could qualify as a new face but can't imagine romney would be affectionate toward his brand of libertarian policy. romney is saying it's somebody else's time. what he really means is it's not about him it's about making sure a republican is nominate who had can beat hillary clinton and the democrats. >> campaign carl, i know one person who will be in iowa and that's you. >> over and over and over. >> over and over. we'll get more into that later in the program. romney's remarks were first published by conservative radio talk show host hue hewitt. so you broke this story earlier today before that call took place. did you interpret -- how do you interpret those remarks that he talked about a new generation, people maybe not as well known as i am better qualified to defeat a democratic candidate. was that a shot at jeb or just a genre mark? >> well, sean i heard the same thing that carl heard from people that i called all day talking to romney people. some are pretty bruised by the last three weeks. the governor i think actually had no choice but to go through

this process. i was out on the campaign trail with him in november and october with doug doocy. and i saw a parade of people coming up to him urging him to run again. i think for the benefit of all his supporters at least go through the process. but that three-week process had a lot of sharp elbows in it as you know. there are some hurt feelings and bruised feelings. i don't know if governor romney has them. he's a pretty big man and a patriot as jeb bush said. but i do think a lot of his supporters are going to look long and hard at what he meant by a new generation of leadership. >> certainly there had to be this appeal, hugh, and dh is that it had to be tempting foreign policy, how right he was about vladimir putin and radical islamist there had to be a feeling he's been vindicated and maybe there might have been buyers remorse here. >> there's buyers remorse everywhere. but like you sean, i've been talking to the presidential

candidates on the radio show and they're saying the same things mitt romney was saying throughout the 2012 campaign. they're basically validating it. i think what happened today is he said a lot of people can make the same argument tonight. i don't want to give away the generational card. hillary's getting older by the day, the message of the democratic party is getting older, it's becoming more obvious that the failures under this president are profound and significantly dangerous. and mitt romney as i said before he's a patriot. he wants to make sure that that critique does not get filtered through any other lens. >> i have no doubt he'll have a big impact on the election. as you surveyed the landscape, you've got former governor perry and maybe jindal and walker and kasich former senator rick santorum rubio, cruz rand paul. as you look at this field right now former governor bush, do you see anybody as a front runner

and anybody as a dark horse that you think is going to take off? >> well, like you i've been hearing scott walker all week long after the iowa freedom forum. and i think he had a tremendous night. then at the coke foundation in my neck of the woods marco rubio had a terrific weekend. so i think you've got really walker and rubio emerging right now at the front of the pack. but ted cruz has that formidable rhetorical ability. he's got a huge fund raising list. bobby jindal is everywhere and always interesting. governor perry is rested, funny, relaxed. you see a lot of interesting people. i still believe in bare naked leprechaun. anything can happen. it's good for our business and good for republicans to be listening to their great candidates. i'll say one thing i read today said mitt romney was very impressed with rob portman and john kasich. one fella who has to be sitting

back tonight and saying, you know, this helps me a lot is john kasich of ohio. because it really does open up a lane that wasn't there before for a governor like kasich in the sort of center-right. >> thank you so much. joining me now with reaction is special report anchor bret baier. pretty interesting announcement today. you follow the ins and outs of baseball here. what do your sources say? >> listen, this does open a lot of lanes for a lot of people, namely as you've been talking about chris christie. obviously jeb bush. but also john kasich. i think hugh hit it there on the head. he's considering whether to get in or not. and, you know this may tip him towards getting in. i was interviewing governor scott walker from wisconsin today for this series of potential contender pieces we do on special report. it's going to air next week. in the middle of the interview he had to pause to take a phone call from mitt romney.

and i left there and they talked for about ten minutes and -- >> they should have conferenced you in. >> i should have been in the call, right. >> exactly. >> but listen, he's a guy who could really capitalize on all of this. and he's specifically pointing to that line from mitt romney in that press release about pointing to new faces in the party. >> i think there is a very strong bench here. it's very interesting because the democrats seem to have already -- this is a coronation, at least up to now, elizabeth warren won't get in, i don't think joe biden will take on hillary. so she seems to be walking right into the nomination, as of now. you've got all these governors, ex-governors, senators, former senators, you've got a really big field here. so it's going to be interesting to see who begins to emerge. and is there going to be a battle you think between establishment and tea party as the primary moves forward? >> yeah, i think so. governor walker, clearly governor kasich too, but maybe

governor walker more can cross those lines better than most of the candidates. senator rubio obviously a candidate as well. but there will be a battle that develops well before we get to the iowa caucuses. the first debate's in august. we're going to see a lot of maneuvering and jockeying before then. >> what about jeb and christie? what end of the spectrum are they on? >> clearly they're on the more moderate establishment side. i think this really throws a lifeline to chris christie because a lot of people were saying if mitt romney was in the race there really didn't seem to be a lot of oxygen there. so, you know, mitt romney meeting with chris christie for dinner. clearly there's some hope i think on the christie camp that some of those donors would free up for him. >> bret baier special report every weeknight 6:00 p.m. thank you so much. >> thanks, sean. new reports about a convicted sex offender's connections to former president bill clinton. reaction to the allegations from

opened with the word -- mr. hannity. >> i did. it was a "new york post." >> bill clinton criticize hillary clinton. but as you say there's no evidence -- >> you keep saying that. he was on the jet. he went to the island. he was there multiple trips. >> isn't clear he was on the island. isn't clear that anything involving bill clinton happened that was untoward -- a 17-year-old girl whose credibility has been questioned. >> really? you're going to attack the woman. >> i'm not attacking her. >> that's attacking the woman. >> i think it's raising questions about her judgment. >> hillary has delayed the announcement from april to june. doesn't have much competition. you can say it. but in the back of their minds with his past sexual history paula jones and jennifer flowers and juanita, kathleen willie and all these other women.

if a story were like this to break and a woman comes out, how devastating is it to hillary's campaign? >> a, it hasn't come out. b, the reason it's delayed -- >> it wouldn't be farfetched doug considering his history? >> there have been plenty of stories and hillary's the front runner for president and will arguably stay the front runner for the foreseeable future. >> hanging out with a convicted pedophile. >> this is different. it's not going to go away i think because it involves a member of the royal family. so the media's going to stay on this one, sean. but this isn't like you '90s clinton scandal where he was a likable scoundrel. it's a private matter, what difference does it make? >> we don't have any evidence of anything. >> after monica lewinsky. >> what -- is going to say what difference does it make? >> the issue is to the american people none of the so-called scandals -- >> not when she tries to run on a platform to champion women.
