>> wow. shepard smith thank you. back in washington the administration was tight lipped about kayla mueller today. and said they were focused on the rollout of the president's new national security strategy. after we spent weeks hearing about the global terror threat from people like jack keane and former d.i.a. chief flynn. susan rice today gave a speech that put the terror threat on the same footing as world health and climate change and said we should not give-in to "alarmism". >> while the dangers we may face may be more numerous and varied they are not of the existential nature we confronted in world war ii or during the cold war. we cannot afford to be buffeted by alarmism and nearly instantaneous news cycle. >> tell that to senator lindsey graham, a republican and some others who say that the threats we face are indeed as dire as those of the past.

>> you know, before world war ii people believed that they just gave hitler one more country or a german speaking portion of a country he would be fine. they never really understood that hitler wanted a master race. the radical islamists are motivated by a religious doctrine that has no place for you or i or moderate muslims or anyone else they disagree with. they want a master race. >> joining me now democratic congressman adam schiff ranking member of the house intelligence committee. good of you to be here tonight. he seemed to agree with general jack keane and others who have suggested this is the communism of our time this group isis. and that we need a global strategy to defeat it. after they say we need to identify it as what it is. in their view is a war against radical islam. what say you? >> well, i agree that we need a global strategy. and i certainly agree that this is the fundamental challenge of our time.
6:17 pm
i don't agree with senator graham though that this is equivalent of world war ii but we've been through far worse challenges in the past. and i don't think it adds really to our strategy to try to compare it with the existential threat that we had during world war ii. at the same time we are up against a barbaric enemy an adaptive enemy, a difficult enemy. and this is a fight that we have to make in concert with others. and i'm hoping that this horrible death of the jordanian pilot will galvanize the arab world in a way that will enhance its willingness to take on this fight both on the battlefield as well as the ideological fight. >> we heard the fbi director this week say he has cases open investigating an isis presence in every state in the union except for alaska. this is tonight we get news isis is reportedly planning on kidnapping more westerners. as somebody who sits on the intelligence committee in the position that you do, you get briefings that the rest of the congress doesn't get, what is your number one concern when it comes to isis? >> well, my number one concern
6:18 pm
is just with extraordinary loss of life that we're seeing now around the world not only in syria and iraq but we're having attacks, a combination of al chi ta da in isis and paris and we're not immune to this. we have to turn every attention to protecting the homeland. ultimately that means we have to attack isis at its source which is in iraq and syria. and it's going to be a long and difficult struggle. i think we are making some headway in iraq. we haven't made much headway in syria, but i think we're going to have to defeat isis in iraq first. and i think we have to be careful not to take full ownership of the civil war in syria. as some are urging us to do. which would require us to go in with at least 100 to 200,000 troops to depose bashar al assad and potentially occupy that country for a decade. it is going to require a wholesome effort by this country, but i don't think we want to repeat the model we used in afghanistan.
6:19 pm
>> do you believe isis in this claim that they have -- that this american hostage was killed by a jordanian air strike? >> i don't believe it for a minute. for the reasons that the jordanian government has said as well which is there's no way you could identify a jordanian plane, it is all too convenient for them to claim that this poor woman was the only person killed, that there were no other isis people around. just far too convenient as a propaganda move. so i certainly hope and pray that she is alive. if she is not, there's only one party responsible and that's isis. >> congressman adam schiff, thank you so much for being here tonight, sir. >> thanks, megyn. >> all the best. well, nbc news anchorman brian williams is under attack again tonight from veterans and media critics accusing him of embellishing a story about his time in iraq to make himself look like some sort of hero. that's their accusation. tonight we'll take a look step by step at what he actually said

he hurls the javelin for 862. he's got it! bruce jenner set a new world record decathlon. >> i spent a lot getting ready for that day. a complete breakfast with wheaties is good tasting and good for you. >> wow. that was bruce jenner a man once known as the world's greatest athlete. and he is now the focus of a huge number of reports suggesting that he is in fact as it's been rumored for a long time transitioning from a man
6:47 pm
into a woman. jenner you may recall has made headlines for years for his plastic surgery, to his life on keeping up with the kardashians. his divorce from his wife kris kardashian was now finalized and he's been spotted with longer hair, painted nails, diamond earrings. he's reported to have the adam apple shaved which is one of the first steps toward transition transitioning. and now we're told he'll share whatever news he has with diane sawyer in a new e news documentary he's making. howie kurtz is host of "media buzz" here on fnc. your reaction to that interview we just had with travis from stars and stripes where we just you know, there was -- i tried not to put any judgments in there. i tried to just have him lay the claim, the statement and what the guys are claiming. >> that was a great visual
6:48 pm
timeline, megyn, that proves without a doubt this was not a one-time memory lapse or fog by brian williams. he has versions of this tale of the chopper in iraq which either was hit by an rpg which he was on or following right behind the evidence collected by stars and stripes makes clear he was nowhere near the chopper that was downed and fortunately everybody there survived. this shows why late today nbc news president announced an internal investigation by nbc into the actions of its chief anchor and why she has not in that memo or publicly ordered support -- >> how about tom brokaw? what a weak statement he put out. >> well, brokaw who helped bring brian williams to nbc news with the hopes he'd become the successor, reported based on anonymous sources saying he wanted brian williams out, he clarified that but did not exactly put his weight behind
6:49 pm
his successor either. we're seeing here i think distancing on the part of nbc folks because they're not sure what's going to come out next. >> i got to get to bruce jenner but do you think he's going to be fired? >> i would not say so right now. i think that he's had a long and basically solid career. >> over ten years. >> if you say it's a one-time mistake, he probably hangs onto his job. but if more comes out, he's got a credibility crisis on his hands. >> let's talk about bruce jenner and why do you say this is turning into a media circus. >> it's a media circus with jenner as the ring master. this is fascinating story where the coverage could be uplifting and ground breaking. instead it feels tawdry and cheap. the reason is over the years the pictures the obvious changes in bruce jenner's appearance, he hasn't said a word. this isn't some ex-athlete living in a hollywood fortress. he's part of the kardashian clan, he's on three or four reality shows i've lost track.
6:50 pm
for him to be silent about this kind of creates this mystery that's been filled by a lot of gossip columns and these sightings and maybe he's holding it all for diane sawyer. >> how should he be handling it? he lives in this world with these kardashians where everything they do is fodder for reality tv series. do you think that undermines it? or do you think this is a platform that will take you know, millions of americans who have no idea what it means to be transgendered into that struggle and all they have to go to -- through when they do in fact transition. >> well, bruce jenner could handle it any way he wants obviously. but by sort of holding back and letting the suspense build it puts journalists in a very difficult box. do we even refer to jenner as he at this point? nobody wants to get too far out in front of this. we don't want to mischaracterize it. and we let people self-identify their gender as we should but it's a very mystifying situation right now. >> and diane sawyer is one thing, but reality tv on e, well, we'll see. howie, good to see you.
6:51 pm

6:55 pm
