down from 54% in 2003. the reason many americans hold the press in contempt is two fold, first ideology, it's perfectly fine for commentators like me to give my opinion about events. that's what i'm paid to do. the factor is clearly an opinion program. just like the editorial page of a newspaper. but when hard news people deceive their viewers and readers to advance a political agenda, that's when the nation gets hurt: and to brian williams the anchorman for the nbc nightly news. every day about 9 million people watch them report the events of the day. mr. williams was successful, beating out abc and cbs news. exaggerate stories. nbc had to suspend him for six months. it wasn't just the iraq helicopter deal. mr. williams apparently misreported other situations as well. for example, nbc won a peabody award for its coverage of hurricane katrina in new orleans. mr. williams was a big part of that. subsequently he said he was

>> what i liked is you stressed the set up within government that the press gets special privileges but with it comes responsibility. and we have really fallen down in terms of those responsibilities. i think that's the larger issue with the brian williams story is credibility and what the press owes to the public. i thought brian williams should have been stripped of his managing editor title how you can have somebody leading the newsroom and the newsroom for the most watched newscast on american television as you said with 9 million viewers a night, most watched nightly newscast and the guy is a self-acknowledged liar. he lied about these events. so for all the high sounding talk from the president of nbc and the chairman of nbc universal yesterday about credibility and trust with their audience, the guy who is running this newscast still as managing editor is a

liar. that is a major problem and it's not just that he lied, bill, it's what he lied abouted in the iraq case in 2003. look at all the soldiers, all the military families that suffer every day, diminished lives because of the scars and the wounds that people suffered honorably on the battlefield. what they get out of that is something that is a little intangible but it's called honor, serving honorably. i think brian williams tried to aappropriate some of that to himself with this lie. and that, to me, how could you ask how could you expect service families watch him without contempt. that's goes back to what you said public having contempt tore the press. >> the iraq thing, the implication there is far beyond the press it does go into honor as you pointed out. how do you see this mr. cam lot.

i want to pick up something what david said about the managing editor title which is something i have a problem with. whenever you vest that much power in one person, both the anchor acting as managing editor, i think that's problematic. and it makes it harder for people who work around you to challenge them on some of their reporting. especially for people who are at several layers down. and, you know, i'm a big believer in editorial process. i think that more eyes on a story the better it is. the fact of the matter is this is a human enterprise and mistakes can be made. >> i don't think that brian williams will come back on any form on the nbc nightly news. might give him a news magazine. might do an entertainment program. might do meet the press. don't be surprised if you see him on meet the press. that show is in trouble ratings wise. i don't think you are going to have to deal with that anymore. now the larger question david, is that press

i think that's where mr. steward wants to go into the hollywood arena. but did you see the schmooze-o-rama on the press? >> oh, no, everybody is on the press? oh, my god. >> what will they do without jon stewart? when you look at the makeup of the audience, it's very young. which is not surprising, about 40% of his viewership is under the age of 30. 43% consider themselves to be liberal when asked that question. and that's a large number who declare themselves to be liberal as opposed to independent and conservative. so obviously he will be missed. and there's a whole generation of college kids who grew up feeling he was the arbiter of good taste and news. >> he is the standard on television for the liberal point of view. and he's funny. they don't have funny liberals. colbert and stewart -- >> yeah. >> i shouldn't demean the other guys. comedy central has some talent over there. but that's it.

there's not a lot of yucks going on at msnbc unless you're a duck. what people don't know about stewart's demographics is according to "the factor" research, 72% of his audience do not understand english. they don't know what he's saying. they like his suits. >> which comes in handy sometimes, right? >> yeah. we wish stewart well. i'll track him down in a few weeks no matter where he is. we're coming for you. but the left they're losing a big thing. >> absolutely. >> if your kids misbehave in georgia. >> uh-huh. >> if you're around snellville, okay you can take your kids to russell frederick's barbershop. go. >> it was the haircut we came up here to help the parents out as far as reaching the kids that were being disruptive at home or school. >> reporter: it's been dubbed the george jefferson, benjamin

americans have forgot about the 4,000 kids killed in iraq is simply not true. former intel analyst in iraq and afghanistan, i want to respond to your interview with kirsten powers. you jumped on her for having no strategy to defeat isis. but i hear warmongers like john mccain pushing for ground troops. they should lead the military measures and the u.s. should remain in the background. i disagree, steve. the world needs leadership. i mean the middle eastern countries are not going to do this unless prodded. so there's only one capable country of prodding them, and that's america. nobody wants to occupy syria or iraq. but quick military strikes combined with air and ground power are needed to wipe out the 40,000 isis savages. and only the usa can lead the way. lancaster, massachusetts. o'reilly, thank you and gary sinise so much for all you do for our veterans.

bill, you told gary sinise he's going to heaven for his good works, but demonstrates a lack of understanding on how to get to heaven. i'm happy with the statement, stan. i think it was a nice statement. jan, gainesville virginia. bill, i agree with your comments about vindictiveness and detest people mocking brian williams. however, i cannot help but note that the obama administration does this on a regular basis. well, even if that's true, jan, the old adage on "the factor" is you don't justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior. that's what they do in the fifth grade. can't say this is bad, but i'm going to do it because other people do worse things. it's insane. karen, charlottesville virginia. o'reilly we are overjoyed that a liar is finally being held accountable. we don't consider ourselves vindictive. if you are overjoyed that brian
