gays, they don't get to change the definition. >> ahead dr. ben carson reacts to the southern poverty law center calling him an extremist. the factor begins right now. >> hi, i'm bill o'reilly reporting from los angeles. thanks for watching us. why the brian williams story is important for america. that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. educated viewers you know founding fathers gave the press special privileges. founders were wise to do that. i just wish the press was half as responsible as the men who forged the nation poll shows only 40% of americans
8:02 pm
now trust the mass immediatea, down from 54% in 2003. the reason they hold the press in contempt is two fold. it's perfectly fine for common commontators like me to give an opinion, but when hard news people deceive viewers to advance a political agenda, that is when the nation gets hurt. enter brian williams. 9 million people watch him report events of the day. now, we know brian williams exaggerated certain stories so nbc had to suspend him for six months he apparently misreported other situations as well. nbc news won a pea body award

we have. brian williams says he was rescued from gangs but he was not rescued from gangs so combining that with the iraq deal, williams had to go. one of their foreign correspondents said this about the american sniper chris kyle. >> what people described as his racist tendencies towards iraqis and muslims going on killing sprees in iraq on assignment. >> wait a minute. killing sprees? chris kyle going on killing sprees? >> involved on assignments. >> right. >> in terms of what he was doing. >> right. >> a lot of the description from this book and terminology that is used people described as racist. >> now, a group of military people demanding he apologize, as he should
8:05 pm
he's a hard news reporter. mr. kyle was look, those mistakes are eroding confidence. it's important that the national reada stop the corruption. and begin telling the truth without an agenda look at the "new york times," that paper has tremendous resources but has become a left wing enterprise. the paper can't even put out a bestseller list without injecting ideology. stuff has got to stop. now, on a personal note, some of you criticized me for not condemning brian williams. here is what i said on jimmy kimmel monday night. >> anyone enjoying destruction

of the man, you have to look at your self people seem to be happy his career is going down the drain. that just disturbs me. he embellished a story. if it's just one time he'll get by. but if it's a pattern of this it's going to be hard to come back and be the main anchor on nbc. >> now, we know there is a pattern and it's my belief mr. williams after the new orleans deal will not return as main anchor on nbc. i'd liked laura engram's take. >> i know brian williams a little bit. i used to work at msnbc. he was very nice and professional to me and very kind to me personally. it doesn't matter whether i watch, whether i want him to be fired excuse me. it matters what the folks in kentucky think. >> that is right on. it's all about what you guys think. if you can't trust a news anchor

you're not going watch that person. nbc news made $200 million on the nightly news with mr. williams. that is $50 comblinl more than cbs. they had to take him off because if they didn't it could insult you, the viewer. reporting comes with a big responsibility. founding fathers made the point clearly, saying we'll give you freedom. we'll protect you from government intrusion. but in return, you, the press must be honest. president john adams got so fed up with the press he tried to shut it down but the balance of power stopped mr. adams from doing that. here in the factor we're in our 19th season and made mistakes in the past but very few. we take great pains to present with you information that can be verified. all americans who love their country should think about what happened to brian williams

that you stressed all the way back to founding fathers a set up the press gets special privileges but with it comes responsibility. and we've fallen down in terms of the responsibilities. that is a larger issue is credibility. i thought brian williams should have been stripped of his title. how can you have someone leading a newsroom for the most-watched newscast on american television as you said with 9 million viewers per night. the guy is a self-acknowledged liar he lied about the events. for all high-sounding talk from president of nbc and chairman of nbc universal yesterday about credibility, the guy running
8:13 pm
this newscast still is a liar. that is a major problem, bill. look alt the soldiers and military families that suffer every day diminished lives because of the scars and wounds that people suffered on the battlefield. what they get out of that is something that is intangible but called honor serving honorably. he tried to appropriate some of that to himself with this lie. how could you expect service families to watch without having contempt? that goes back to what you're saying. >> right. that iraq thing implication there is far beyond the press and goes into honor. how do you see this? mr. camlet?

the question is press organizations have become somewhat ideological. and that really tees me off. your column anyone labelled a columnist. but don't give me, we have documented time and time again all right? don't be slanting that stuff. and that is why people are mad at brian williams they perceive him as a left winger. >> bill what you're talking about goes to having too much control of one person. they, what you're talking about is who selects the stories? how much air time do they get? all of that to some viewers is invisible kind of ideology. and you and i know -- >> here is the deal. when fox news comes on the air
