>> good afternoon. we're beginning today with a very disturbing new report in the fight against isis. reuters news service is reporting right now from iraq that islamic state fighters have taken over most of the city in the western part of the country. this is significant not only because isis has clearly made gains there, but specifically because this spot is near a key u.s. air base where u.s.0 marines are right now training iraqi troops. frankly we're having a hard time getting detail i from the pentagon. officials confirm there is heavy fighting in the area but that's it. the cities anwar province where isis has been battling for months and today, according to reuters, isis is winning in a spot that is fraught with peril for american troops. let's bring in retired army colonel, thomas lynch, former :special assistant to the joint

chief0s staff chairman, now a fellow at the national defense university. he is not here to speak on behalf of the university or the pentagon. this sounds very troublesome sir. this spot that reuters says isis has apparently overtaken, not far from a base where our soldiers are working. >> yes, i think it's a report that bears watching. i think it bears watching in context. the context is this is a fluid situation in iraq. over the balance of the last couple of weeks report is have seen suggest that isis in many different places. there are a number of airstrikes launched against iraqi forces with a debilitating effect on their vehicles, sources of oil revenue and other locations. having said that, they're still -- having been to that air base several times, while i was still in ewan ewan -- uniform, it's 10 to 15 miles away from

there's a long time. that's 20 days. well, 18. it's not clear if this agreement will hold at all since president putin has never kept many promises. everyone involved seems to agree this is worth trying because frankly, it's better than nothing. greg palkot is live in ukrainian capital of kiev. >> reporter: certainly worth trying but the mood near kiev as well is skeptical. the folks here have been here before. of all the leaders at the marathon talks in minsk. putin looked the most satisfied. he came away with the most from thoseuç talks. for example the line between the two sides, well, putin has already arguing about where that line should be as a fighting around the hot spots there rages. russian troops reportedly said to be inside ukraine for -- in big numbers. well, the wording in this agreement is so vague they might

day two of emotional "american sniper" trial. the defendant, eddie routh, is accused of murdering chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield. routh pleaded not guilty by reason of inseason. chris kyle wrote a memoir, "american sniper" which inspired an oscar nominated movie. chris tile is known as the deadliest sniper in u.s. history. he received not one bullet two silver stars and five bronze stars. he is no doubt an american hero. even after all those awards he wrote he struggled with come bat-related anxiety after returning home from war. so he helped start a nonprofit group that helps veterans struggling with post traumatic stress disorder. police say chris kyle and his friend were trying to help a

guy, ralph cope with his ptsd, when he killed them. today a texas ranger testified that chris kyle and his friend had loaded guns on them at the time. chris kyle's widow cried on the stand yesterday, talking about her husband. but it was the defense attorney who dropped the first bombshell. during opening statements he read a text message that he said chris kyle sent to his friend, chad littlefield, on their hour and a half drive to the lodge where there was a gun range. sitting side-by-side and ralph was in the back seat but they're texting each other so having a private conversation. kyle wrote, this dude is straight up nuts. and littlefield replied he is right behind me. watch my six. andr;vñ military parlance for watch my back. think 6:00 on the clock. that takes us to the question at the heart of this trial. whether eddie ray routh was legally insane at the time of the shooting and whether he should spend the rest of his life in prison or be committed to a hospital instead with the

thousands of people showed up at funeral services today for three students gunned down in north carolina. a father said the gunman shot them execution style and he calls it a mate crime. the students are allm6o#4d muslim. police say it center overred a fight over a parking space, an ongoing dispute. the funeral was in a mosque in raleigh, north carolina, and the

shooting was in chapel hill. investigators say craig hix shot and killed the students at a condo complex near the university of north carolina. a neighbor says she called 9-1-1 after she heard ten gunshots and then people screaming and then nothing. the suspect describes himself an facebook as a gun-toting athiest and says he hates religion two of the students were newlyweds. friends and family say the couple planned to travel to turkey to help give syrian0=ççó refugees free dental work. the third was the wife's little sister shep was 19 years old and a student at nc state. the woman's father told the charlotte observer newspaper the suspect picked on the young couple behalf and said one of his daughters called the suspects a hateful neighbor, saying he hates us for what we are. and how we look. police say they're still investigating. the suspect behind bars now could fails the death penalty.

jonathan is covering this one. >> reporter: this crime causing a lot of concern in community. literally thousands of people showed up for the prayer rally this afternoon in honor of the three young people who were gunned down on tuesday. friends say the victims had volunteered to help local homeless people with dental problems. that in addition to their international humanitarian work with refugees. craig hix requested a public defend are as he faces three counts of first degree murder. the suspect was upset over noise's3 at his con minimummum complex in addition to a dispute of the parking space. but civil rights advocates want authorities to investigate whether bigotry was an aggravating factor because all three victims were muslim. the "associated press" reports mr. hix's wife suggests religion had nothing to do with the shootings and neighbors say mr. hix was quick tempered and prone to heated confrontations.

>> joining us now is a fox news legal analyst arthur aidala. three fantastic young americans. does this qualify as a hate crime or could it? >> in new york, it would be more applicable in north carolina the hate crime statues only apply to lower level crimes. that in theud state of new york there's in death penalty and in north carolina there is. so there is no more severe punishment that's guy can get if he killed them over a parking shot or over their religion. so it's not applicable really, honestly in this case, from a purely legal purely punishment point of view, it doesn't matter. he is still facing the death penalty. >> in north carolina hate crime legislation applies only in this way. to elevate a misdemeanor to a felony. so, because he is already charged with a felony felony

every community, every american can reach out and do more with and for our veterans. this has to be a national mission. >> this new law calls for outside audits of suicide prevention programs at the department of veterans affairs and creates a program to help vets transition from active duty and a web site about mental health services. the legislation named for clay hunt, a marine who served in iraq and afghanistan. he killed himself in 2011. according to the veterans administration an estimated 22 veterans die from suicide every day. lea gabrielle joins us now. >> clay hunt was 28 when he died. he survived being shot in the wrist by a sniper but couldn't get help from the va in time to save him from suicide. his death represents a problem that too many veterans have faced. >> we have 22 veterans a day committing suicide here. that's an issue that needs to be in the forefront of every

citizen's mind. we sent them to war. >> for every 100,000 people, about 13 commit suicide. that number is more than double among veterans. we spoke with one veteran who survived a suicide attempt. he says he wasn't prepared for the things he saw when he was deployed. >> something that haunted me and really for me it shapes my deployment. and when i came home it resulted in nightmares. it left me kind of feeling like i couldn't escape, even though i was home back in the states and i knew i was safe couldn't shake that feeling of depression and anxiety. >> he says it was almost a year and a half after his deployment before he started getting treatment, and the stigma attached to ptsd is part of the reason. he hopes that stigma dies as the bill becomes law. >> the stigma is the most important thing.

also argue these are our best and brightest, our future business leaders future teachers future members of congress and presidents and we owe it to them to get it right. >> congressman, in speaking with many membered of the military and veterans they'll tell me it's a very difficult thing to balance. for one, you're being told you must be tough you must be tough every way every day and then when you come back you also have to let us know when you're not feeling good. you have to let us know when things are running from you in your head. and does the -- do commanders have a responsibility here and are they being instructed? >> i thick the military on the dod side is doing a good job. you would not send a warrior back into battle with a fractured arm and the same thing with a mental health issue. i said the sad part about with clay hunt was he was incredibly

self aware. he was in any office advocating for better care on mental health. he understood what was happening to him. he tried to seek out the help but it was disjointed to the point where he couldn't get it. i thick there are those that are getting there. but from my observations and having -- as a senior nco, think the climate is changing, the culture is changing in terms of addressing this, of understanding if you want to geese the warriors back into service and once thigh leave we have to understand this is valley there's things we can do to happen -- steer them away from the decision. >> we can all be good friends and good listeners for them. thank you for this important legislation. >> thank you. >> yemen is on the brink on an all-out civil war. and headed towards complete

today we join journalis in news rooms across america in remembering one of our own and my n my opinion the best news writer of our times. long-time cbs news and "60 minutes" correspondent, bob simon, died in a car crash. it happened here in new york on the west side highway. police say bob simon was in the back seat of a town car when it hit another car, stopped at a traffic light. the town car then slammed into the metal barriers that spray the lanes. seat belts are not required in the back seat. bob simon was not wearing one.

the town car driver was hurt but survived. the driver of the other car is investigating. >> bob simon has been well known to viewers saturday the late 1960s. his career in war reporting began in vietnam. he was one of the last -- on one of the last helicopters out of saigon when the u.s. withdrew in 1975. bob simon covered dozens of wars and conflicts and nearly died many times doing so. for the better part of five decades he gave vieweres an up close look as history unfolded. >> lebanese officers in the hills needed the cease fire. they were running out of ammunition and energy. that has been corrected now. ever want to know what a revolution looks like feast your eyes on manila. >> eight months ago the happiest place in the world but tahir square where people overthrew a dictator in 18 days. the people are back again.
