pro-iranian government and that is very significant. this is another capital, the fourth capital. beirut lebanon, damascus, syria and baghdad-iraq that iran has influence over. that is very significant. secondly, it's an operational loss for us because when we close down the embassy in a contested area, it's much more than a diplomatic post. s the also an operational post swrechlt an all source intelligence center in there with all of our agencies represented to include the headquarters of our classified forces that operates inside the country. fought representatives from that headquarters, excuse me. so we've lost that. our screen has gone blank in yemen now. what's in yemen? in yemen is a directed al qaeda affiliated unit axap that al qaeda central gave orders to to conduct out of region attacks in europe and in the united states. and we have lost and diminished

6:02 am
perimeter and at the same time train the iraqi security forces was simply not credible. others have pointed out that the objective here not likely that isis thought they could take over a base of this size but their objective was to have a high-profile incident to get them more publicity which they have effectively done. number two to penetrate the perimeter and if they were able to kill a half dozen or a dozen individuals with a suicide bombing, that would be a great victory for them as well. or number three, a home run to use the cliche would be capturing a member of the american military and then having them as a high-profile hostage because as you well know, the number of western hostages held by isis in iraq and syria is really diminished. but they did achieve at least
6:03 am
one of their objectives to have sort of a global event which once again put them back at the center of attention. >> earlier on the show a general was concerned about the deep perimeter which he says we protect against and we have iraqi forces which protect the deeper perimeter. he's not confident that that deeper perimeter is protected at all and being able to train iraqi soldiers who lay down arms and take off uniforms this is a big concern. >> well, that's correct. and given the size of the base and as this former intelligence officer pointed out to us it has no natural defenses. so it's a very flat, open area. and very difficult to defend on that point. and general keene i'm sure was getting into the fact that while the iraqi military has have been more effective than it was a year ago when it essentially collapsed in the face of isis morale remains a key piece that the u.s. is trying to rebuild. >> we know as you've been

6:06 am
he said with every metric what you see is that the threat from isis is greater today than it was a year ago. so, there is the contrast between the intelligence professional who was knee deep in this information and the pentagon spokes man. >> yes. just to expand on that, so isis obviously evil, but also tactically very shrewd. what do we think their end game is? what's their long-term strategy? what do they want? >> well, they've been -- one of the things about these groups i've found over the years is especially with al qaeda and we see this also with isil is they actually tell you what they intend to do. there's no mystery here. so, when bin laden said i'm coming after america that is exactly what he did. isil wants to establish this islamic state or caliphate, and we see them making every effort to do so. of course, there's a difference between taking territory and holding territory.
6:07 am
i'm not sure that they really have that capability in a broad sense in iraq. but the ideology has spread. and we heard testimony in the last couple of weeks from members of the intelligence community on the hill that there's now a significant presence in algeria, libya, and also the sinai. so, the ideology is spreading. it's part of their broader goal, and we should think long and hard about what baghadi reportedly said when he was released from u.s. custody, the sort of infamous line now, i'll see you in new york. so, they may not have the capability now but we have to certainly consider that that is part of their -- that's part of their game plan over the long term. and as general flynn testified friday, isis is not an existential threat to the united states at this point. in other words, it's not a direct threat to us here at home. but that does not mean that we should not act in a very
