react to that. fox and friends begins right now. ♪ ♪ good sunday morning. we start with a fox news alert. breaking overnight police have killed the man believed to be behind two terror attacks in denmark. in a shootout outside of a train station in copenhagen. coming hours after the same man allegedly shot two officers and killed a jewish man near the city's main synagogue. he also carried out an attack at the free speech event. it left one dead and three police officers wounded. the chilling reporting from inside the event has been released. [ gunshots ] >> we are also getting a new look at suspected gunman's home.

the danish prime minister is calling the attack, quote an act of terror. and it's what early similar to last month's terror attack at the "charlie hebdo" office in paris. authorities do not believe that anyone else was involved in the coppen hagan attacks but they're keeping the city on high alert. we find fox reporter tom carson is live in koeben hagan with the latest. what can you tell us? >>. >> right now they're searching an apartment in a part of copenhagen near where he was shot. they're trying to find out if this is -- apparently he was taxi driver. they caught the taxi on the surveillance camera and he drove police to the apartment where they later found him when he came back about 4:50 in the morning. >> do we know anything about the man? do we know his name? >> reporter: no name. we only know what we knew

yesterday or last night. he's about 30 years arab dissent speaking danish. they haven't released anything yet. he's still, as far as i know, last i checked he's still lying where he was shot. we know the name of the person who was killed outside the free speech center he's a documentary film maker who has been working in the movie industry for many years. he's 55 years old. not 40 like report the i didyesterday. >> what do we know about the attack of the free speech conference. >> inside there were agents from pp.e.t. which is similar to the american fbi. they were there to protect them. luckily, they got into a shootout with the suspect. if they hasn't been there he probably would have made it in with the high-grade automatic

rifle. we can imagine what would have happen then. later on he murdered a security guard at the synagogue. there was a bar mitts have a going on inside. >> we're hearing reports that the man that was killed stepped outside for a cigarette and was shot while standing on the sidewalk. is that your understanding? >> yeah. the videos are show him lying outside. it's likely he went outside for a cigarette and got shot by the suspect. he shot at a close rang like point-blank. he was only a meter from him. i think that happened after the shootout with the police but i'm not entirely sure. >> it's bullets spraying the windows. you can only managehandle the horror inside. as far as the investigation goes, what are you hearing from law enforcement, you know, as they search for accomplices and try to see you know what the scene was like ahead of the

shooting. are they going business to business looking at surveillance video. what are they doing? >> they're using a lot of surveillance video. that's how they found the man. the taxi driver. they're not giving too much details how they're doing things. they'll tell us when they found something. right now everything is locked down around the crime scene. and obviously, they're combing through everything. they'll have more press conferences. i live very near a police station which is for investigative police officers, which is usually completely dead on the weekend. there's a lot of activity today. so everybody is pulling into work to try to find out -- >> we appreciate the update from copenhagen, denmark. we hope to talk to you later in the show. >> interestingly enough, apparently he was -- the reason the guards were there because he was on the assassination list by isis. he's been under attack for

years. in fact an american woman from illinois was doing ten years in american prison for being part of a plot to kill him a few years ago. he became famous in sweden by penning a carton of mohamed attached to a dog's body. every since there was a bounty on his head. >> that was 2006. there have been so many attempts like this. also, in 2010, two brothers tried to burn down his home in southern sweden and imprisoned for attempted arson. >> one of the organizers is joining us on the phone of the free speech event. she was there at the time of the free speech event even the founder of a committee. nice to have you here this morning on the phone with us. set the scene for us. what was it like inside that event yesterday as it unfolded? >> well, you know, it was quite -- it was a small event

and the french bassambassador had just given a talk and i was about to introduce the panel. and the leader of the feminist group, she was speaking about freedom of speech and suddenly we heard a lot of noise. i was just thinking what is this noise? then the security guards said everybody down. >> describe -- i'm sorry describe what the gunman looked like. i understand you said he was wearing a mask. about 25 to 30 years old. >> we don't know. we don't -- we simply don't know. he tried to shoot his way in but he didn't succeed. but, you know, according to the video recording, you know he was not very -- he was sort of covering his face. and wearing sort of a heavy jacket and trousers.

we couldn't see him. he tried to shoot his way in. >> do you think these killings will make it more or less likely that free speech conferences are held in the future in skand knave ya? >> i think that the of course this always -- of course, always, awakes a lot of fear. i think there's also a growing awareness in denmark, et. cetera -- we of course, we have to think of the location. we have to think about security. >> and the danish prime minister has called this an act of terror. why is that significant? >> it is, of course, significant. sometimes you hear a terrorist attack being labelled just as criminal act or something like that. you have to be very specific i

think, especially as a politician. this is a terror attack. there's no way to describe it. >> describe the feelings of the people inside denmark this morning. obviously, you can't speak for the country at large. but just the small tight-knit community in this area. obviously, police had a large portion of it on lockdown yesterday as they were thinking there might be accomplices. describe the mood there this morning. >> i think things here are pretty calm in the area. of course, you can see from the picture s pictures the places people can't go and the police are still investigating. but, you know, it's also just daily life in denmark. at the same time, of course, the danish people are shocked. we haven't had an attack like this before for many, many years. and nothing like this, i think ever, really. >> you said that free speech is a core western value.

do you believe it's under attack? >> i do believe it's under attack. by saying it's a core western value, i would love to see free speech being a value for all people and all societies. but, you know, it is our core value and it is under attack. i think it has been sort of ever since -- in 1989 in connection with the sanen -- we can't stop the saying what they steal -- it's very important. >> did lars is he certain he was the intended target? >> he's pretty certain. i would say so am i. i mean, we always have the set

up that we had yesterday, you know, with policeman and security guards. it's not possible to hold a meeting with lars without that kind of security. it hasn't been for several years. i think there's no doubt about it that he was the target. >> what is the security like for him now? is he fearful there will be another attack and attempt at his life in the near future? >> no i think that he's not a fearful person. he's quite a cool guy. he's sort of used to this. he's been living with armed protection around the clock for more than four years. he's not really fearful. that's not his style. >> what about you? i mean, you're on television now internationally, publicly identifying yourself with this event. does that make you feel a

the shooting echoes the attacks on charlie hebdo last month in france. is it a science that the-- sign that the message of jihad is winning at least in europe? without knowing the details. we don't know the name of the apparent gunman in the attack. does it look like a coordinated attack? >> well, many in the media have been focussing on the microanalysis, the name of the person, the details of how that happened. that's an operation. it's a macro right now. meaning what is the nature of the attack? in my view comparing it with what happened in paris at charlie"charlie hebdo"." to go after the elite in europe especially the ones talking about free speech and criticizing the jihadist movement. that's how you can understand.

more on our fox news alert sunday morning. isis believes to have executed the 21 coptic christians kidnapped in libya around new year's. >> if true this would be the 13th deadly attack against egyptian christians in the past year bringing the death toll to 50. joining us from jerusalem is arkansas governor mike huckabee. >> it's a horrible tragedy. it's not something that is completely maybe unexpected.

the coptic christians have been under attack. they were under horrible attack during the time that the muslim brotherhood took over egypt during the period of time when the united states picked the wrong partner. things settled a little bit more there. but i think we need to understand the threat of terrorism is not limited to just one or two places in the middle east. it's all over the world. and these coptic christians are especially targeted because they've had an unusual faithful adherence to their faith. thank god for people like the president in egypt who stood with them. actually went to one of their charges which was unprecedented and incredibly bold move. but egypt is now saying their people need to come home. it's the only way they can be protected. >> i wonder the u.s. government and the state department are keenly aware of the persecution of certain groups around the world. what is the obama administration weighed in on behalf of christians in the face of

persecution? >> what they said about christians is christians a thousand years ago did things during the crew saidusadecrusades. they seem to be unaware that the christians are being beheaded. hundreds of christian children had their heads cut off because they refused to denounce christ. this is the kind of treatment that christians are getting at the hands of islamic jihadists. and just this morning in jerusalem, i was asked a question by a reporter do i worry about islam phobia? and i'm thinking are you kidding me? it's not phobia to recognize there are fanatical people that will cut the heads off of innocent journalist and children. that's not phobia. that's reality. i think that some members of the world press and many of the white house don't seem to be able to have a dose of reality. >> governor, the awful images are saturating our tv screens

recently. whether it was james foley beheaded, whether it was the pilot burned. we saw others in cages and then all the coptic christians about to be beheaded here. it's so awful and vile to look at the images. we don't want to become numb to it, but are we going to keep seeing it? >> i think we're going to keep seeing it. the only way we can deal with it is attack it head on and get rid of the animals. as horrible as it was for the nazis to do the just murderous assault against jews in world war ii, the one thing they did their best to keep it secret. they never wanted people to see it. they lied about it. they never told everybody what they were doing there. the difference with these jihadists they're not only willing to tell us, they record these heinous acts. they put it on the internet. they want us to see it. they're proud of what they're

doing. they're on unashamed in the slaughtering of innocent people. this is a level of bar barrism. a level of savagery we have never seen before. >> you saw what happened in copenhagen copenhagen denmark. we're covering this pretty deeply. we think it's important. it reminded me something that susan rice said the other day about the threat of islam and the media coverage of it. listen to this. >> while the dangers we face may be more numerous and varied, they are not of the extension issue nature we confronted during world war ii and the cold war. we cannot afford to be buffetted by alarmism and a nearly instantaneous news cycle.

right. logistically it's been harder here because we're so far away. even though there's airplanes and stuff. we have such good intelligence and technology tracking the people. here is one thing that is very very interesting i don't think is brought up enough. they can get one person in here legally and highly trained. they can train 10, 50, 100 people if they wanted and carry out the attacks. that's my worry the caves that these consistently are happening in. this is a starbucks on every, you know, block here. we're starting to see that not only are they attacking the freedom of speech rallies and these type of places. they're hitting home where people go and drop their guard every single day. first, it was a worry it would be a mall. a stadium arena. now we're seeing caves where people go every day. >> we have 7,000 security guards at the super bowl but there's no security guards when you go to a starbucks or grocery store. this is part of their plan.

they talked about moments ago, they have a manual for carrying out these kinds of attacks. we're studying it. we know this is what they want. >> the training manual which i read years ago is like a criminal handbook. it talks about everything you can think of. prostitution, money laundering, but it also talking about killing. it talks about specific ways to kill. think about this, for 14 years they've had operatives -- warriors over in the war zones in iraq and afghanistan that have learned our techniques, tactics, and the ways we go about fighting. know they now our security and intel. they've had a generation of people growing up to learn how the west fights terrorism. i mean if you think about that that's chilling. before that it was, you know, they were learning on their own. literally we've been there running terrorism operations and they've been learning and learning. we have to realize that, you

know, places like the united states where we feel very safe. you have to be aware. the lady you were speaking earlier. she knew that guy was targeting. she said when the bullets started flying she said she didn't know the sounds. how could not go into the meeting not knowing the potential for bullets to fly was there? >> one thing i want to get your perspective on is terrorists. they don't want to inflict the violence and carnage. they want to change the way we live our lives. whether it be the airport screenings or making schools feel like they need to have metal detectors and the sense of security we have on our own can be diminished when acts like this happen. >> right. >> so what do we do to make sure that we're safe but aren't living in fear. >> great question. it's a simple answer. you have to accept the fact that the chance of this happening is there. and you have to prepare yourself for it.

it's going to happen 100% in the united states. you can't wake up every day in fear. you can't wake up every day under the oblivious or the people in the cafe. you center to realize, you know, the freedoms we have. you have to fight for them to get them and keep them. you have to be ready for -- to defend yourself against the people like this who are going to come and try to attack you for having those freedoms. that's a very important thing we have to realize. you know, i'm looking at the picture here it's like streets out here. it's calm in the united states but that can change in a second and your life can change in a second. and for a ris is an amazing guy. people need to start listening to the things he says about how they're targeting them. and stop listening to people -- why which i know you're a fan of russell brand. they go after people who, you know, talk about securing the country or ways to take -- he

of the deep south. memphis at 21 degrees. in atlanta at 25. 16 in raleigh. you see what i'm talking about. the cold air. it's been windy. we have a lot of damage across the carolinas overnight from the strong winds. the winds will just increase throughout the morning across much of the mid atlantic and the northeast. very heavy snow still falling across eastern massachusetts. watch what happens behind the storm. see the pink color coming in. these are air temperatures. by tomorrow morning as you get up and try to head to work. it's minus 4 in hartford, it's 3 in new york, 1 in boston minus 11 in buffalo. that's without the wind. it's going to feel about 20 degrees colder than that. here is the current temperatures across the area. minus 7 in detroit. minus six in buffalo. you factor in the wind. you get the picture. we have a lot of cold air this week. we have another storm we'll watch across the south.

strikes alone. we acceptable won't be able to do it in the three years jot lined in the request for forces. >> give us the idea of of the geography around the air base. you've been there. you say it's the middle of nowhere. are there any natural barriers protecting us. rivers mountains, hills? no. it is out in the middle of nowhere, which is an advantage when you're defending it and have clear weather to employ air strikes or apache helicopters. what isis is doing is taking advantage of the bad weather to move in. they are smart. they understand that our reaction forces are coming from the air. if they can use the bad weather to get in there and approach the place, they'll do that. it is isolated. it is sprawling. and it's tough to defend. >> i understand that you serve some three separate tours over four years, and during some of that time you were responsible for equipping and training the iraqi forces. what confidence do you have.

how much confidence do you have in their capabilities of defending themselves and defending the u.s. marines who are there? >> well, in ann bar it's the seventh division. it used to be a pretty good unit. my concern is iraqi forces in the last six or nine months have showed -- demonstrated they possess neither the heart nor the will to stand and fight against isis. that's going to take a huge effort to reverse that. on the other hand, the kurds have shown they have the heart but we haven't given them enough heavy weapons. and the syrian resistance, i'm not sure if they possess either one. >> and the report out this morning, is that affiliates in areas beyond iraq and syria. so this terrorist group is it growing or on the run? final word? >> i think it's -- in iraq it's a tactical stalemate. they are still capable in iraq of mounting major operations

the first attack took place late yesterday afternoon in a cafe cultural center where an event on freedom of speech was going on. a gunman tried to force his way in. the security guards stopped him. they knew that this place could be a target. a cartoonish who depict the mohamed was a speaker. the cartoonist lars vilks was unarmed. three police officers wounded and one person killed. and a gunman went to a synagogue and killed a jewish man outside providing security to a bar mitzvah. it was a cctv footage that lead police to the suspect. apparently they had him on a watch list but made no public comment. they tracked the suspect to a

>> he was 25 to 30 years old. police know exactly who he is. they're not sharing that information. i think they're worried if he had a network perhaps if they say we know who it was they might risk their own investigation. he spoke danish but has arab backgrounds and was living in a part of copenhagen with big muslim minority. >> lead us through a time line of what exactly happened. he opened fire on a free speech and then synagogue. >> he opened fire at the free speech and it was fended off by security services luckily because had he gotten in he would have killed a lot more people. then he disappeared in a car and vanished for many more hours until he then attacked a mosque at 1:00 a.m. and was defended by police and he was shot at 4:50 this morning.

campaign. we have air stiekrikes and it doesn't even equal to pin pricks. >> what's the end goals here? do we want it to be administered by one government out of baghdad or break into two separate countries? what are we trying to achieve? >> boy that is the $64 question. what i would like it to achieve is if you have a government that is friendly to the kurds and sunnis and brings them together. a unity government. whether we're going to be able to get it defacto right now iraq belongs to iran. it became a proxy once we moved our forces out our influence is waning. i would like to bring it back into that world that we knew the original iraq that we took down. there is a very valid question that you asked, can we do that? that remains to be seen. i don't know if we can do that.

get around. they have agreed on salary and long-term vacation and things like that but the benefits surrounding health care is still a sticking point. >> will the federal government get involved? >> yes the president is sending john perez to the ports and he's going to try to negotiate and get the two sides together. at the end of the day it's a major impact to the economy. 70% of the imports from china are coming from the 29 ports. that's where the activity from 70% are coming from. the president has every reason to get involved and try to bring these two sides together. >> what will this mean for domestic products made here in america. >> made here in america has had it's own issues because of the strong dollar okay? exports have been so important to the growth of this economy and unfortunately when you look at how strong the u.s. economy has been. so much money has come into this country from foreigners because this is where the stability is and as a result that's pushing the dollar higher. that's making our exports that

the president as anbar looks like it's about to fall? >> it's full-timetime for him to get in the fight. this president has not recognized how far the consequences are going to be. i spent eight years in this fight and i certainly don't want to see my son. i have a 9-month-old son, i don't want him to have to grow up and be in this, as well. anbar is the home to the second largest dam in iraq you know, the first is the mosul dam. this produces most of the hydroelectricity power for iraq so isis getting control of this province and their hands on something as significant as that is pretty scary. >> of imminent concern are the 320 marines at the air base there. how much confidence do you have in the iraqi soldiers how well are they trained and equipped? >> if i'm going to be honest i never trained with the iraqi soldiers, but i can tell you, are they trained enough?

would i feel confident if it was my son standing there as one of the 300 with an iraqi contingent in front of them? the answer is no. there were a lot of tribes in that region, so anbar is a very sunni tribal area in the country that's led by shiites. and they really do operate in a ment and a lot of those tribes made the difference for us in iraq in 2006 2007 right, when we actually had the great awakening and they really consider that we abandon them when we left and left them to basically be subdued under shiite rule. so it got us to play in this isis narrative, right that we're helping the shias and the sunnis so that's a real measure of concern. it could have been a great ally for us some of those tribes, if we engaged them earlier, and they would be an asset. >> we put the shia in control in the first place. >> we did. >> we spent hundreds of billions of dollars training the iraqi

army some of the smartest people i've ever met were involved in the effort and when isis showed up, they appeared to evaporate evaporate, what happened? >> we weren't there. to be honest, you're not going to change a generation in a few years and give them the back bone that is probably necessary. i can tell you from my own experience, at least in afghanistan, as long as we were there at least in support and they knew they had air cover air support's a massive thing in this fight. knowing when you get engaged, a, close air support is going to be able to help you out and you're going to have medevac capabilities, and those guys simply do not have that guarantee anymore, and i think that probably is pretty demoralizing. >> we'll get you out on this president saying no more boots on the ground do you think that's viable? >> well it's a great question. is it viable to the mission, you know, what's the mission? what's the end state, what's the strategy? i personally believe yes we're going to necessitate boots on
