largest mall signals a new phase in the fight, one that makes it easier for extremists to strike without getting caught. that's the word from the head of the department of home land security talking about the al qaeda linked video that threatens the massive mall of america. these are images from the video. it comes there al shabaab, a terror group tight with al qaeda and based in somalia. the video calls for al shabaab supporters to target shopping malls in the united states and canada and britain. it specifically singles out the mall of america outside minneapolis. some 100,000 people shop there on average every day. the feds say there is no credible net to the mall of america, not at all, and folks should not stop shopping there. still the mall of america reports it is increasing security. and here in new york city, police say they're stepping up patrols in popular shopping areas as well as orthodox
12:02 pm
communities. still it seems nobody is taking chances giving al shabaab's track record of launching deadly attacks. you may remember the group was behind the assault on a shopping mall in kenya that left 70 or so people dead. and the day before this latest video, at least 25 people died when al shabaab 59 tackattacked a hotel. analysts point out the mall of america is in an area with the largest somali population. police say dozens of somalis have since joined up with terrorists overseas. doug, what else are officials saying about how serious this well, lack of a threat is? >> reporter: well, lack of a threat or real threat depends on who you talk to and what you hear from the various administration officials as of today. secretary of homeland security jeh johnson was on all five sunday talk shows yesterday doing the hat trick. and he was pretty much unequivocal about the threat
12:03 pm
that we face. he said and i'm quoting, i would say that if anyone is planning to go to the mall of america today, that was yesterday of course they have got to be particularly careful he said. but then in a later joint statement, the mall of america itself along with local authorities and federal officials issued a statement in which they said that there was no direct threat that they were facing here. jen psaki the state department spokesperson today had a press conference where she addressed the threat achtd downnd down played what jeh johnson said. >> to us it's proppropaganda. it was to instill fever. >> and just within the hour you can jeh johnson had a press conference in which he's talking about dhs funding. and he said he had nothing to add to what he said yesterday. >> i mentioned somalis who joined up with the terrorists
12:04 pm
oversea, do community organizers say why this is happening? >> we spoke to community organizer here today, he's with a group called american friends of somalia. he utterly rejects the notion that whatever jihadist movement we're seeing in this country from disaffected somali youth or muslim youth is caused by poverty, hardship or lack of jobs. listen up for what he says is the root cause. >> some of this gets eventually turn out to be doing something crazy came from a wealthy family. thrs they were going to good school, they had good grades. >> so he's on the ground living in the largest somali community in the united states and what he says is happening is an utter -- in utter contrast to what we're

it's disheartening and disquieting and certainly discomforting to think that the person in charge of everything on the heels of something like this would questionould go on the sunday morning shows and tell us to be careful at the mall. do you have any idea what it is you're talk about? >> the only exception to that, i think you're right, but the only exception to that obviously is when this specific information about an impending attack which does not appear for be in this case, you're right. >> and here is the another thing. since the days after 9/11, i'm not every talking weeks talking days after 9/11, security consultants have come to us and said our biggest fear is this. what if they do something as simple as send a couple of guys with a couple of guns to a couple of malls, they could shut down our economy. we're weirded out that they haven't already done it and now we're concerned about it. >> you're right again. this is not an unreasonable
