controversy swirling around former new york mayor rudy giuliani, and the comments he made about president obama's love of the country. now, the comments were op-ed, saying my intended focus was really the effect that his words and actions have on the morale of the country and how that effect may damage the country. joining us is our chief white house correspondent ed henry. they're not liking this very much, are they? >> no, sean what they tried to do at first was ridicule rudy giuliani and the campaign that didn't work they said they feel more sorry for him. now what you see with rudy giuliani, he is focusing more on the personal rather than the

substantive regarding the politics. i saw the same thing play out today when the governors were here the republican and democratic governors were here bobby jindal was one of them. had when he was asked about the controversy he said the mayor should have used different words. and saying at one point, bobby jindal said the president has disqualified himself as commander-in-chief by a, not calling out islamic terror and b taking ground troops off the table to fight the threat. so what you see there are some republicans like bobby jindal saying rather than making this personal about the president they want to make it about policy. >> you know, what is interesting to me and maybe i can get your perspective on it, it seems to open up old wounds on president obama's associations such as reverend wright, saying he was family for 20 years to me.

or father flager which i don't think is something they want. and it dovetails into the fact he can't say radical islam. and this potentially for iran could be the worst deal for our closest ally in that region. netanyahu. >> sure, i mean, sean the goal post on that iranian deal as you know it continues to move. at first they were not going to have centrifuges, or some, and then none, and it looks as though the president may be so eager to get the deal that they may give in more in the end. i think you're right on one hand, the white house doesn't want to talk about any of those old issues but on the other hand, when i talk to the president senior advisers they refer to this as a clown card. they say if the president wants to go down this road that they have seen conservatives go down before, they believe it could back fire on the republican

presidential candidates. >> in light of him not saying radical iran or in light of a bad deal i think it gains more insight. and rudy giuliani, strong criticism of the commander-in-chief is nothing new. here is what he said about president obama and his policies earlier this month. >> it doesn't take a genius to figure out the cause for which he was murdering he told us, allah akbar, but the president of the united states doesn't see the connection. just the other day he called the slaughter of the people in france a random act, mr. president, come back on earth. >> it has been responsible for more deaths than any other terror group.

id to get into the democratic national convention, mr. fowler? >> hi sean, thank you for having me. >> you know to get into the dnc you need a picture id? >> that is not true i didn't need a picture id -- i had a delegate -- >> the naacp convention, richard, you were probably there. i needed an id to get in. >> i was in las vegas, but didn't need an id. >> but for houston you did. >> in las vegas, i didn't need an id. >> you are the only one that i know apparently you're so loved, you just walk in and play the celebrity card i guess and walk right through the gate. i needed an id to get it. and on top of that it is very difficult to get it. but the point here is how do you equate the voting rights act, with showing an id to get

to vote so we can keep honesty and integrity in our elections, how do you like that? i like john legend as a musician but he doesn't know anything about politics. >> well, i think he is saying a great deal here, one, the voting right act is tied up right now, this is the first time in american history we don't have bipartisan support in passing the voting rights act. you have to ask yourself why they refuse to pass the act and protect, where one man gets one vote. millions of americans are disenfranchised -- whether there is voter suppression laws -- >> cite the laws. >> voting should be easy sean voting should be easy. >> and people who should not vote should not be allowed to vote -- >> should be easy to vote. >> he brought up ferguson that is why we put our hands up, he

said, in his rap. and i'm listening, and i'm thinking okay, and john legend is talking about people in jail in america and occasionally we make mistakes. but i have a message about ferguson, don't rob stores, intimidate clerks, don't fight cops for their guns and don't charge the police officers as the witnesses testified to. >> as you know, sean dr. king a good friend of yourself and mine went to ferguson and met with a variety of folks in the community. and what we came out there was our message to young folk in general, and young people in general, it is hands up don't shoot, but hands up don't loot. >> our country is going through the civil rights revolution -- >> your father was on the front lines of that absolutely. >> i think the important message, these entertainers want to do the right thing but

are no specific threats, i see the secretary of homeland security starting to talk about these things because there is a bit of a fear factor, the senate is sitting on the matter. consistent, the threats have been consistent, forever, a little fear factor puts pressure on congress and the senate to pass that bill. >> newt made a great comment the other day, they have been at war since 197, ken, tanzania, the u.s. trade center bombing. >> i'm glad they're saying things like this, let people keep aware there is a real threat at all times. of course if we get real complacent, we'll have a problem. we should not pull back on that. we should send the money where we need to send it with tsa.
