down in the most dramatic and horrible fashion by the man that you see on the left-hand side of of your screen. what a case has been. judge alex ferrar has been tracking this case. your thoughts on this verdict? >> not a surprise, i guess. i think, you know, most people in the legal community thought that this was a difficult case to win even in light of the fact that all insanity cases are difficult to win. this one just had a lot going for the prosecution. the defense had a strange behavior and probably was banking on the fact that the public doesn't really totally understand the difference between somebody being mentally ill, crazy in their eyes and being legally insane under the eyes of the law, and i think that the best way to put it is that there are a lot of criminals who are mentally ill. there are a lot of criminals, you know you think of a serial
10:12 pm
killer, you have to be mentally ill to be a serial killer or a pedophile. there's mental illness involved. they get prosecuted and convicted because they know what they are doing is wrong, so here you know the prosecution had a lot of ammunition to show he knew what he was doing was wrong. they had him fleeing the scene. they had him saying he wanted to apologize to the family. all this kind of behavior. they had comments from him that an insane person typically wouldn't make. een one of his doctors commented on that. as his story started unfolding it didn't always match-up. you know, when he started talking about in his confession to police, he thought they were going to take him down at the range when littlefield got behind him he got worried. later on we find out he said to the doctors he thought about shooting about both of them when he was in the car heading to the
10:13 pm
range. decided against it because he thought he might get injured in the crash. that's a lot of logical thinking for a person who is insane. the prosecution's job was to educate the jury that legal insanity. this guy is nuts is the vernacular that we use when we say that guy is crazy but legal insanity is more than that. they had more than enough ammunition to show that this guy knew what he was doing what was wrong. he. >> he took off with the truck. look at my truck. >> you have to realize, of course, the defense is going to mount whatever defense they can. >> i got to go. i'm up against a break. i'll stand by more reaction, news conferences coming up as well. stay with us. we'll be right back with more of the ver in the "american sniper trial."
